Bob
4:00 PM
just for kicks ima try a 6.x flash

@djsmiley2k That's not unusual
@Bob Ermm... what did you do :-|

Shit where's a screen protector when I need one

Bob
welp
6.x "FAIL! (DeviceInfo)"

Mine: Was not expecting to work, worked basically flawlessly
Bob: Was expecting to work, pretty much went as wrong as possible

Bob
4:03 PM
Time for a new CSC!

noooo

Bob
?
my data's gone anyway :P
hm. PIT flash doesn't touch microsd right

a) when has a new csc fixed anything, and b) why would you think that?

Bob
@Annaduh it fixed my failed flash way back when

that's gotta be a fake phone :/
i can't find anything for an aerial like that
that's not even when the external aerial point is, if someone did have it and connected one

Bob
4:05 PM
hm. I can still get into download mode but all flashes fail

@djsmiley2k Me neither
@Bob I'm getting some serious dejavu feeling here

Only thing I can imagine it's some kind of fm aerial

Moah, I can't see deleted stuff anymore :(

Although that might also be because I went cold turkey off my meds, that seems to be a common theme
@djsmiley2k Except this is the model they took FM out of
:-/

Bob
I can still get into TWRP

4:06 PM
@Bob Then your Nougat flash didn't flash

Bob
just formatted /data from TWRP

Nooooooooooooooooooo

Bob
@Annaduh no, I did a post-Nougat TWRP install

Oooooooooooooooooooh

4:07 PM
Oh

linked at correct seconds...

Well this is the Korean model, whelp

but that's a note 2...
does that come with TV? :D

I didn't ask for a Korean model, dangit
All the firmware I downloaded was for the international model
Feck

Well that was unfun.
Take it back
'wat is this'

4:09 PM
On the plus side, it has 32GB internal memory?
> LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 20(800) - I9506
LTE band 5(850), 9(1800) - Korean Model

Bob
hm. ima try older Odin

Oh ffs, just when I was looking forward to having two working phones again for the 3rd time something fucks up

Bob
lol.
@Annaduh We're back!

@Bob Congrats

Bob
I had to wipe /system from TWRP

4:18 PM
CSC fixed it?

Bob
That was really fucky... who knew a borked /system could prevent an Odin flash
@Annaduh Nope. COuldn't even flash CSC by itself.

o_0

Bob
Ok, fresh full flash coming now

Bob
I should make an android.se post about this

4:19 PM
The fuck is this shit

Bob
@Annaduh Engineering model? :P

Have to use a korean sim to update? :-|
@Bob That's the home screen

Have you. ever noticed that there is no question about how handshake WPA Enterprise? All I found was WPA 2 PSK

Bob
@defalt ...funnily enough that sounds like something @Annaduh would know:P
@Annaduh Post-update boot... fingers crossed!

I do but I'm hiding so shhh

Bob
4:22 PM
Samsung logo just did its animation
Annnnnd... it's breathing. No idea if that means "wait" or "broken"
If it means wait, I'm gonna be so pised -_-
But better than broken...

@Annaduh I want to know, it's not there on internet..Do you really know?

@defalt It's all over the internet... works the same as any WPA
Only the backend is different
So LTE band support is slightly better than documented (1,3,5,7 instead of just 3 and 5) but still missing 8 and 20 and I need 20.

Bob
> Once it has finished it will boot into a screen saying "Erasing" this is fine, it will shutdown and reboot and linger on a pulsing samsung logo, this is fine.

@Annaduh It is similar but not alike

Bob
> this is fine
f. m. l.
@Annaduh I suppose this is your revenge :P

4:26 PM
@Bob FML too

Just an FYI to the community: My availability is going to be very limited over the next ten days as I have lots of sports photography to do. The weather has not been kind lately so a whole bunch of games got rescheduled for the coming weeks.

I told you to go to sleep
This is insomnia's revenge!

Bob
lol
@Annaduh did yours do the same?

@Bob FML? or This is fine?

My schedule is going to be jam-packed next week.

Bob
4:27 PM
@Annaduh pulsing logo

Oh the breathing Samsung logo? I don't get that cause mine's encrypted, I just get the unlocking logo

@Annaduh Do you have any link where I can read about it?

Bob
@Annaduh oh.

Involvement of RADIUS server makes its handshake process different

4:28 PM
> The handshake is the same if its a PSK or 802.1X.However the orignal keying material used to start the authentication process is derived differently. The PSK uses the actual phase phrase for seeding material in the 4 way key handshake.While the radius server uses a random AAA key generated during the EAP process. This keying material is used for the seeding martial in the 4 way handshake.

Bob

That doesn't explain what happens in the handshake process of enterprise

@Bob git gud.

@Bob: Nope, still no fast change with screen on
@defalt That just describes exactly what happens
> However the orignal keying material used to start the authentication process is derived differently. The PSK uses the actual phase phrase for seeding material in the 4 way key handshake. While the radius server uses a random AAA key generated during the EAP process.

Bob
fack. I just needed to wait 3 mins the first time, probably

4:32 PM
> 5 Things are needed for the handshake -

PSK or Master Key

Snonce

S mac address

Anonce

A mac address

The Ap sends the first handshake. Inside this frame is its Anonce and mac address both derived from the PSK or Master Key. The client at this point has the UNICAST keying material, because it knows its own Snonce and S mac address. The client then sends its Snonce and S mac address derived from the PSK / Master key to the AP. The Ap now has enough to derive the key for UNICAST.

Bob
sigh. time to restore apps one at a time -_-

@Bob Err...
Just 3 minutes? :-o
Well yeah, that happens after every major update, basically the "Android is upgrading" or "Optimizing apps" bit is hidden now I suspect

Bob
@Annaduh well, that's the time the logo spent pulsing before it got to a progressbar. on a fully flashed (no data) phone
omg

I took so long reading how to root while it was rebooting I didn't even notice the 3 minutes, but yeah, it does say allow 5 minutes for first reboot -_-

Bob
there's an auto-reconnect option for wifi networks
:D :D :D
ffs, this shouldn't be new

Bob
T&Cs...
*taps agree to all*

It's also a lot faster than it used to be.

Bob
waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit a minute

In enterprise PMK is sent encrypted while In PSK PMK is never sent..That's why I'm trying to find the exact steps of its handshake

Bob
marketing information?!
*unticks*

4:34 PM
@Bob :-o
@Bob Oh yeah, that
My Sony had that since Android 4.4
:-O did not notice it there on my Samsung

Bob
@Annaduh I'm pretty sure my S4 had it

ffs this is amazing, this shouldn't be new
@Bob Mine didn't :-(
Friggin awesome it's finally turned up though

Bob
o.O
@Annaduh yea I kept having to delete my work network
cause I only wanted to be on it sometimes
and digging up the password every time was a pain
windows has had it since Vista FFS
(Vista also being the first time Windows had wifi support at all)
wait, no, xp did have wifi autoconfig
it was just half broken

>

Both transactions are encrypted with a KCK,KEK, TL, keys. Going off memory hereā€¦

The 3rd and 4th handshakes are for the broadcast key.
Do I really have to copy and paste every line from the link?
@Bob Ergh. I just turned off wifi as my workaround

Bob
@Annaduh I tended to keep wifi on :\
shit, I knew I forgot something

4:37 PM
But yeah, one of those things I've been feeling should have been there for years since I got the whole "Sony seems to put so much more effort into the little things" when I got my Z3C

Bob
should've enabled google backups before updating

@Bob Well if I didn't want it to connect to my work network while at work I'd just turn off wifi

@Annaduh let me read first and then i'll ask what is missing in it.

Same for most other networks tbh.

I have wifi on all the time
screw the idea that I need to micromanage my phone
if this is what it takes to have a longer battery life, I don't want the flippin phone

4:38 PM
It's unusual for me to want it to autoconnect to anything which isn't the main network I'd connect to in a certain place

Bob
@Annaduh I had that hotspot :P

@djsmiley2k Eh, I use mine often enough simply walking out of the house that it's trivial and normal for me to keep toggling it
Too lazy to wait for the 15-30 seconds or so it takes to time out and disconnect from my "home" wifi as I walked out of the building, was quicker just to swipe down and turn it off.
Otherwise data would be basically non working during the most important part of my walk from home to the bus stop, right when I needed it to find out when the bus would be coming
Oh and also having my wifi reach the bus stop (very weakly) wasn't too helpful either, cause sometimes it'd sporadically connect and time out while sitting at the bus stop

@Annaduh yeah but I've got a life.
i've got 2 kids, a house, a wife.
No time

@djsmiley2k So you never leave the house?

No, I'm constantly in and out of places

4:41 PM
Or just never use the phone while leaving the house?

it's petty much like that now yes, because the phone dies

Also we have public wifi in a lot of places which keeps coming on and off but being too weak to use as I walk around the building or the high street

I don't connect to the public wifi at places unless i'm sticking around

So really I just keep wifi off unless I specifically want to connect to it somewhere

see if I do that, my battery dies from trying to get data
can't win :(

4:42 PM
@djsmiley2k Me neither, but our public wifi is often a lot faster than the wifi supplied by my hostel/accomodation...
@djsmiley2k lol you need a better phone
My Z3C survives 6+ days with 4G data on 24/7

yes, yes I do
but no money, mo problem

Would this be on-topic for SuperUser? I'm inclined to migrate it, because SuperUser folks would be more knowledgeable about the practical side of this.

Q: does heat kill hard drives? hhd lifespan due to heat

Atmega 328These days it's hard to buy an external 3.5" hard drive with a fan inside or well heat dissipation design. I have 4 of such hard drives, and two have already failed in first few months. Here is the deal; They all run very hot in few minutes of copying some files. Some show 50 max and some 70 max...

It seems to be okay, but would need some editing to remove some opinion-based content from the question.

Well it's hdd...

> Why all manufacturers suddenly choose to not include a fan?
That's opinion-based and should be removed.

4:49 PM
To me it reads 'I'm buying cheap drives and they die, what gives?'

@NickAlexeev Yeah based on the title
No based on djsmiley's description

It's an otherwise meritorious question, but it needs to be edited.
As it stands, no.

So ontopic? Yes, suitable? No.
but we're not mods! :)
People ask far worse questions every day.

You know that person managed to write each numbered steps to explain WPA2 PSK but when it's come to explain about WPA2 Enterprise they just tell you that radius server uses AAA. That link was not helpful. Handshake is combination of steps with the participation of RADIUS server and steps of who sends what

Bob
@NickAlexeev I swear we have a duplicate

4:55 PM
facepalm
@defalt Because as stated before, it's identical except for the actual PMK derivation
This should be simple enough to sort out
d8NNggr.png

Is it just my vulgar mind or does anyone else think of the N word when they see that URL
