10:00 AM
because its the right thing to do

user226528
Bumping a five-years-old question to the top would be the right thing to do? I was chastised for doing that.

Bob
@Burgi Technically, if you recreate them, you are the original source of the (new) images.

@FleetCommand I'm already a mod (I signed the mod agreement). Waiting for my swag :)

user226528
@DavidPostill \o./

@DavidPostill You already got the bling.
Everything you've ever done has a pretty diamond next to it now. :D

Bob
10:03 AM
There miiiiiiiiiiiight be an argument that the new ones are a derivative, but with a common source like this... it'd be like arguing that MS owns the copyright of the images. Which they won't bother with.

@Bob you give up the copyright when you post on SE, its creative commons iirc

Bob
@Burgi Nope.
You license it under CC-wiki.

user226528

Bob
You do not "give up" or "transfer" copyright ownership.

@Bob If I made new ones it would be from doing my own install, and downgrade.

10:04 AM
semantics

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver Ya, but the law around 'derivative works' is rather murky, at least unless it gets into an actual court case.

user226528
@GypsySpellweaver Forget what I said. You can upload them Imgur per this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Non-free_Microsoft_screenshot

Bob
@Burgi Very important semantics.

user226528
It is a little embarrassing though. I created that template.

user226528
7 years ago.

10:06 AM
@FleetCommand on wiki?

user226528
@Burgi: On a very specific wiki called Wikipedia.

Bob
@FleetCommand Hard to say, actually.

when i said "wiki" i meant wikipedia

user226528
@Bob What is hard to say?

Bob
The screenshot can be considered a derivative of the OS. So you'd actually need permission from both MS and the screenshot author.

user226528
10:07 AM
@Bob It'd be derivative if you changed it yourself.

user226528
As long as it is just a screenshot, it is not a derivative.

regardless they will be on imgur by the day is out.... ;)

@Bob Have permission from MS, per the Wikipedia post.

Bob
@FleetCommand Could it not be argued that the specific positioning of windows etc. and the settings changed is somewhat transformative?
@GypsySpellweaver yea, I already said I don't think there's a problem with you taking your own screenshots - but uploading the existing ones direct might be a bit of an issue

user226528
@Bob It could, only and only if it passes the threshold of originality.

Bob
10:09 AM
@FleetCommand Which is nice and subjective :P

user226528
@Bob And ... the change of position must be an integral part of the screenshot.

Bob
> Google’s use of thumbnails is highly transformative. In Kelly we concluded that Arriba’s use of thumbnails was transformative because “Arriba’s use of the images served a different function than Kelly’s use — improving access to information on the Internet versus artistic expression."
^ Ninth Circuit Court opinion

user226528
Basically, between Microsoft license, fair-use, ToO and de minimis, we are safe.

Bob
Which sounds similar-ish

user226528
Amazing how I am remembering all this from 7 years ago. Good thing they didn't strip my FileMover privilege yet.

10:11 AM
Ok, it's fixed. I can replace the screenshots with ones of my own creation if the pair of you work reach a decisive opinion. It won't be fast, cause I'll have to spin up a VM to install 7 Ult on, then down grade to Pro, but can if necessary.

Bob
@FleetCommand If we're going by 'serving a different function' - the original (the windows in Windows lets you ... configure the OS, the screenshots document the process)... then they're transformative, no?

i've lost interest now the convo has moved into the semantics of copyright law

Bob
<== not a lawyer, just interested :P
@GypsySpellweaver eh, probably isn't/won't be a problem

@Burgi I like ping-pong :D

user226528
@Bob No! "Function" has a clear meaning. It's commercial and non-commercial here.

Bob
10:13 AM
@FleetCommand Hm?

Just for GP I credited the source above and below. It is a long piece. All linked and pretty, so to speak.

How do you clean trackball?
In a mouse there's ball for scrolling.

@Boris_yo Q-tip®

@GypsySpellweaver It leaves lint that gets stuck inside...

Bob
Going back to the thumbnail example...

> Just as a “parody has an obvious claim to transformative value” because “it can provide social benefit, by shedding light on an earlier work, and, in the process, creating a new one,” a search engine provides social benefit by incorporating an original work into a new work, namely, an electronic reference tool.

> We conclude that the significantly transformative nature of Google’s search engine, particularly in light of its public benefit, outweighs Google’s superseding and commercial uses of the thumbnails in this case.
Which all sounds very similar :P

10:17 AM
Things/little balls that hold trackball...

Bob
Documenting the process => reference... public benefit is there too.

I wonder if window cleaning solution will damage trackball...

user226528
@Bob You can't. The thumbnail example only had the fair-use law to support it. Microsoft screenshot have a Microsoft licensing grant.

Bob
Might even be stronger than the thumbnail case. Or maybe not, idk. But it does hover around there.

I have cologne.

Bob
10:18 AM
@FleetCommand Wait, what are we talking about again?

Use VCR head cleaner on the Q-tip® and keep close eye on the lint.

@GypsySpellweaver I am non-US... I can't easily buy VCR head cleaner.

Bob
I'm saying the screenshot might be considered a derivative of Windows. Which means you, as the screenshot-taker, would need permission from the original owner (Microsoft) to distribute it.

Because I doubt we have these things here...

Bob
The Microsoft licensing grant gives you that permission...

user226528
10:19 AM
@Bob I am talking about Microsoft screenshots in "Downgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate to Professional without reinstall?" I dont know about you. Actually, I was. I think I've said all I had to say and don't want to repeat myself.

I have LCD screen cleaning solution. Should I dip trackball in it?

@Boris_yo Probably not.
The material the wheels are made of could be damaged chemically by LCD and window cleaners. If nothing else, use the C/DVD cleaner solution.

Bob
@FleetCommand Eh, AFAICT when I said it might be a derivative you just said it isn't. I'm guessing you're saying that it's just a copy instead. Which would mean that permission from MS is enough, and you don't need permission from the screenshot-taker.

@GypsySpellweaver Any type of alcohol that would be safe?

If not VCR head cleaner, how about cassette tape, or 8-track tape cleaner, all the same stuff.

Bob
10:23 AM
Basically, it's the difference between being able to freely (under MS licence) use any screenshot of Windows, vs having to take your own.

I have glasses optical wipes soaked in alcohol of some type...

Bob
@FleetCommand It's ... not really that important. But I just wanted to figure out which one was technically/legally right :(

Alcohol, medical, not drinking, might be ok.

user226528
@Burgi Now, if in your terminology, Wikipedia is the only wiki, then what happens to Wikia and SE Community Wiki?

@GypsySpellweaver Should I make sure there is no ingredient that could damage the coating of trackball?
I am not aware of any ingredient that would do that though...

10:25 AM
The track ball isn't the problem, it should all be gone before you put the ball back in.
Or is it the ball itself you want to clean?

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver LCD/window cleaners are usually something like 70-90% isoprop... will be on the bottle somewhere
Huh. Quora's been around a while.

@GypsySpellweaver Yes. The ball itself. Before I clean it I think I should wipe my hands with alcohol wipe as well due to natural oil?

@GypsySpellweaver Yeah. Downside is people might think you were a mod for all those old event. Fortunately I don't think I've done anything to be ashamed of :)

Bob
@Annaduh ...name change again?

@Boris_yo Alcohol can damage, dry out, the plastics, and the oil in your hand are natural for the track ball itself.

Bob
10:32 AM
Just wash it in water -_-

For cleaning the ball itself, just use denim, old jeans.

Bob
Use a bit of mild (dishwashing) detergent if you must

@FleetCommand if its a SE community wiki i'd specify that

Bob
That's safe for just about everything.

@GypsySpellweaver The issue with oil is that trackball becomes too fast due to less friction.

10:33 AM
i never used wikia

@Boris_yo On mine I can pop the ball out (essential to clean fluff from the sensors underneath and to degrease the ball).

user226528

I just use one of those microfibre cloths to clean it.

Bob
@FleetCommand when'd wiki (hehe) get a mascot? o.O

s/mascot/champion/

10:36 AM
@DavidPostill How do you clean the ball?

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver ...is there a difference?

this is your fish:
><>
this is the fish I am trying to fry:
><(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((>

3 mins ago, by DavidPostill
I just use one of those microfibre cloths to clean it.

user226528
@Burgi Then use a skillet that looks like this:
|____________________________________|----

@FleetCommand lol
@Bob mascot ➯ emblem/representative/etc. champion➯defender/spokesperson

Bob
10:40 AM
@FleetCommand that's still too small!
@GypsySpellweaver eh, both then? :P

@FleetCommand heh

Bob
@allquixotic You still use LastPass right?
There's a RCE vuln in LastPass right now, exploitable by any website...

@DavidPostill @GypsySpellweaver Can you use this not to clean but to ensure permanent smooth scrolling?

@Boris_yo NO

Lol look at number beside my username.
It's 1999!
Do you know what will happen once it turns 2000?
2K!

10:53 AM
@Boris_yo I see 2004 already

I mean Y2K

@Boris_yo I wouldn't.

@Boris_yo because..

@Boris_yo Now you can see vote break downs

Hmmm
@OliverSalzburg It's all your fault!

>

6. Wash the trackball with warm, soapy water to remove dirt, oil and germs. Allow the trackball to dry before reinserting it.

7. Blow into the trackball housing to dislodge dust and loose particles. For stubborn dust, use a can of compressed air.

8. Dampen another cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and clean the rollers inside of the trackball housing. Let the rollers dry.

10:58 AM
2004 here too

@Bob He doesn't use LastPass I think. Either Keepass or one of its variants.

@OliverSalzburg You make me look like crazy now. Don't even think about locking me in a nuthouse!
Because...

allq uses Enpass apparently.

@DavidPostill +1

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver it'd be an interesting experiment :P
@DavidPostill When compressed-airing make sure you don't turn the can upside down.
That blows liquid butane over the internals. That kills the internals.

11:07 AM
@Bob Yeah, I know :)

WOOHOO!!!!

@Bob Not much of an experiment. Ever seen what that stuff does when mixed with oil?

i have working phoneline

@Burgi Do you have a working phone?

thats how i know i have a working phoneline

11:09 AM
@Burgi \o/

@Burgi Can you ring me?

no i don't have a call package

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver Thankfully, no!

SAD!

I use MagicJack, anywhere I have Internet, I have phone.
@Bob It turns into a rock! Best way to kill a lock, add that powder, then someone trying to be helpful adds WD-40. Buy a new lock!

11:11 AM
@GypsySpellweaver This guy sometimes experienced intermittent delays when moving trackball and usually cleaning solved it but not for long. He decided to dip ball in some lubricant (not sure what it is exactly but looks like powder) and the result was soft and smooth operation no longer requiring frequent cleansing.
One of newest comments asked how is it and how long did effect last him to which he said "For long"

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver Well, the first mistake was adding WD-40 to a lock. *shudder*
I used graphite powder once. Apply a bit to a key, insert into cylinder a few times. Worked a charm.

@Bob That's exactly what it's made for.

Bob
At some point I need to figure out what a good lubricant for a sliding door rail would be...

@Bob Used that way it "coats" the metal, reducing friction.

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver I actually heard a fair bit of conflicting advice before. e.g. use white lithium
Though I think that was for the bulkier moving parts and not inside the cylinder itself.

11:16 AM
@Bob Replace the Teflon® tips if it has them. And keeping the track clear should help a lot.

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver Tips? o.O
It's an old balcony door. Pretty sure the wheels are busted :(
I'm currently just spraying some silicone lubricant every time to get it open, but that disappears after a couple days.

I've had some good advice too. Had a computer shop tell me to use axle grease instead of thermal paste on my CPU.

Here's description of dry lubricant:

"TECHNOLOGY

Russian Academy of Sciences was the first time in the world have developed a unique method of processing polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the most slippery material in existence.

Using this unique method of thermal gas processing PTFE dry lubricant was created Forum - a new material with properties having no analogues in the world. Extremely small particles of dry lubricant Forum can readily bind to any solid surface to form a durable coating. Neither Teflon or PTFE or any other type of PTFE does n

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver Now that one sounds like not such a great idea :P

I didn't think so either.

Bob
11:19 AM
@GypsySpellweaver Brief bit of research... apparently some people use it to be cheap or cause it's what they have available.

I could just picture the grease getting liquid and dripping onto everything else below the CPU.

Bob
But when a tube of proper paste costs like $5-$10... IMO it's not worth it :\

@Bob It does have a high thermal breakdown. But...

Bob
Save, what, $5 and risk a $150+ CPU+mobo set? urk.
@GypsySpellweaver I'd accept that it would work as a substitute at least in the short term (heck, toothpaste works!), but I doubt it works better than proper paste long-term.
Eh, who knows. It's not the worst idea I've heard :P

4 RadioShacks, 2 BestBuys and scattered other stores in my town, no reason to be desperate for thermal paste
Maybe in Afghanistan I'd be more understanding.

Bob
11:24 AM
@GypsySpellweaver funnily enough all the nearby shops here were out when I built mine :S
luckily my cooler came with a tube

@Bob If the door wheels still turn, but need lube, the white lithium would work there.

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver I'll have to check. Unfortunately, I kinda lied when I said balcony... it's this funny window-pretending-to-be-a-door with a 'balcony' extending maybe 5cm and a slanted rail. So you basically need a ladder to access the outside.

@Bob I did have to take a 2½ hr bus trip to get the paste. Still, better than trusting the other option. Besides, I knew I needed maximum thermal transfer as well as not wanting it to drip.

Bob
We're actually planning to replace the door entirely. The logistics of that, though, are still being planned.

@Bob It should still be removable from inside. Maybe by lifting it straight up when opened all the way.

Bob
11:27 AM
The whole replacing a heavy glass door and large frame while on ladders bit...
@GypsySpellweaver Nah, the moving half is on the outside. The stationary half is on the inside.

Sounds like a task for ThumbTack®

Bob
Might be a way to remove the stationary half first, actually... probably a couple screws.
@GypsySpellweaver We've had a lot of issues with sliding doors in general... fragile things they are :(
Heavy glass on tiny plastic wheels isn't great for the wheels
And metal wheels just dent the rail after a few years
Now, repairing the rail... NOPE
@GypsySpellweaver now that I think about it, it'd actually be harder for me to get axle grease than thermal paste... probably

@Bob Walmart™ has it where I live.

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver Ha, the only truly giant sell-everything store here might be Costco and that's over an hour away. Most supermarkets here are pretty limited in non-grocery items :P
Kmart might have a bit actually, but their range is shrinking pretty quick
Waiiiiiit. When did Lidcombe get a Costco? O_O

@Bob ... Coconut oil is oddly good as a outdoor lube.

Bob
11:35 AM
Speaking of which, I've never actually been to one :(
@JourneymanGeek ... ... ... I've heard about it being used for other things :P
But yea most wet lubricants just pick up dust. Ugh.

@Bob That's one of the nice things about the white grease, somehow it keeps the particulates from collecting. Causes em to migrate to the free surface instead of the contact areas.

@Bob That's a Juliette Balcony AKA Balconet.
A balconet or balconette is an architectural term to describe a false balcony, or railing at the outer plane of a window-opening reaching to the floor, and having, when the window is open, the appearance of a balcony. They are common in France, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. They are often referred to as Juliet balconies after the scene from Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. A prominent example of a balconette is on the Palazzo Labia in Venice. == Balconette brassieres == The term has also been applied to a style of brassiere featuring low-cut cups and wide set straps that give the appearance of...

@DavidPostill Goes good with coconut oil, i guess...

> The term has also been applied to a style of brassiere featuring low-cut cups
hon hon hon

@satibel I was wondering if anyone would notice that ;)

Bob
11:41 AM
@DavidPostill huh, good to know. didn't realise it had a name

@DavidPostill What did ya' think the coconut oil was for? ;P

@Bob I watch lots of DIY and house building programs :)

FLAGGED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2

@Burgi 4chan stole the flag... again.

!!flagged

11:44 AM
@Burgi Clearly 4chan killed the bot as well

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver high self-adhesion? sounds like

:(

Bob
there's probably a word for that too

Used to use that on lead screws in semiconductor equipment. Thin coating would last nearly forever.

@Bob mayonnaise is one of the best... for around a day at normal temps.

Bob
11:56 AM
@satibel not surprising... more liquid makes it more conductive, at least until it dries out
the whole point of specialised thermal paste is to work when dry (or take a really long time to dry)
I'm suddenly tempted to try soldering a heatsink on
the hard part is getting a heatsink up to soldering temperatures...

@Bob try melting a silver heatsink on it.
though if you want, gallium is better, but not if you use aluminum

@Bob To bad you don't have access to eutectic bonding systems.
That would be perfect for joining CPU to cooler permanently.

@Bob overclock the cpu?
i guess it's gotta get hot enough, to allow the solder to bind properly?
/me imagines cpu's heating upt to 210c just to bind to their heatsinks
:O

@djsmiley2k That's the whole point of eutectics, lower temperatures. Used in the manufacture of CPUs all the time.

Q: How can I connect two TP-LINKS routers using WAN-WAN?

delinageI'm trying to set up an Internet emulation using 2 TP-LINK routers and 2 computers. The first computer-router is in LAN: 192.168.0.0 The second computer-router is in LAN: 192.168.1.0 The connection between the two routers is in WAN-WAN and it's: 10.0.0.1-10.0.0.2 I'm not very confortable usin...

what
!!wat

@djsmiley2k That tiny piece of silicon has to be soldered to the package its in.

yah
nice

TP-Link is on the low-end of things, so probably not, but some home routers can have routing tables in them, and without going outside the given parameters it could be made to work. Sorta..

the new moto G is looking good

12:24 PM
@GypsySpellweaver could 'easily' do it with a 3rd router :D

@djsmiley2k That would make more sense too. Simulate the Internet, is the project. Most connections have a router already. The 3rd router would be the "simulated" Internet.

is anyone going to get a nokia 3310?

@Burgi Don't know what that is, so probably not anytime soon. :|

how old are you @GypsySpellweaver?

12:32 PM
@Burgi Nope. Might actually go back to OnePlus next

A friend had good things to say about that 3. The only thing he couldn't tell me was how well it can "handle phone calls"

Right, so I finally got the post file thing to work. Ended up using curl.

@Burgi I guess that's supposed to be a nice phone. I'm sort of not into the phone thing. Simple, cheap, disposable phone here.

49€ is pretty disposable

12:35 PM
Last "fancy" phone was Blackberry in '05/'06 range.
Mine is abt 13€

we used to give our engineers basic feature phones like: carphonewarehouse.com/nokia/…
the incidents of theft and breakages vanished overnight when we swapped to them from iphones and blackberries

Is it this one?

@Burgi Here's a few hints: First local storage device PTP (Baudot code), first computer game: ADVENTURE (PLUGH anyone?) or Lunar Lander, not sure which. Original modem speed: 110bps.

Punter is a protocol for file transfer developed in the 1980s by Steve Punter. There are various types of Punter such as PET Transfer Protocol (PTP), C1 and C2. == PET Transfer Protocol == The PET Transfer Protocol (PTP), also known as Punter or Old Punter, was developed ca. 1980 by Steve Punter for use with his PETBBS and BBS64 bulletin board system (BBS) software. The "PET" in the name comes from the Commodore PET computer. Compared to other contemporary protocols, PTP is slower than YMODEM and ZMODEM but faster and more reliable than XMODEM. The earliest version of Punter supports only 7-bit...
is that the PTP you are talking about?

@Burgi Too new. Paper Tape Punch

12:47 PM
ah
still newer than slate or stone tablets... ;)

Slightly

what is the one technological advance during your lifetime that has surprised you the most?

Social media

really? why?

BBS, and email were ok. The instant-ness and connectedness is just too fast for me. I never got beyond two windows in Messenger.

12:53 PM
for me its probably satnav

Tech itself seems natural to me. Each step following the last in natural, logical progression. Seen it coming, so to say.

yeah
i'm in italy next week; i'll be able to get in a car, type in the destination and instantly know how to get there

The only thing new there is the size of the tool.

@GypsySpellweaver XYZZY

@Bob, you there?

12:56 PM
\o/
@DavidPostill You've played that?

@GypsySpellweaver availability suprises me

@DavidPostill All hail to Crowther!

it was in the realm of the military and universities then almost overnight everyone had one

@GypsySpellweaver Of course. I played on a machine where I couldn't save the game. Eventually I managed to solve it in the minimum number of moves.

@Burgi It's been available since the '80s, Ham radio's used geo-positioning nearly that long.
@DavidPostill Never knew it could be saved!

user226528
12:59 PM
XYZZY was the cheat code for Minesweeper, right?
