3:00 PM
Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 vs 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735 SoC
I heard not so nice things about MediaTek. "Chinese crap that heats up more than others" and other things about it's nano process, its inefficiency in something...
I would go with Qualcomm but the screensize is 5.2" which is more than 5" that I wanted. I am pretty good at 4.7" and would not need bigger one as it becomes less mobile and does not go smooth in jeans pocket.

You need bigger manlier pockets
If you cannot have a hammer or a small cat in it, pocket is not manly enough.

a small cat is dangerous to carry in a pocket

this is true
i carry my cats, as if they were machine guns

with the safety catch on?

Q: I have a 2005 emachines 3123 and a 2009 dell DCCY

toby jonesMy eMachines has not been on line for over 10 years it has always worked just fine and I like it just as it is. I bought a hp desk jet printer that all the labeling said it was for my system and 2 sales people told me it would be fine at worst it would not work and i bring it back. I put the down...

cats have no safety

stuff them with fish and they go into safety mode

lol nah
just want more
welp, the m6 has been shut down 3 times today so far
o_O

Post it before the whole place ends up on lockdown
4 days of voting togo
it'd be nice to see a total of votes placed so far.

3:10 PM
@djsmiley2k even we don't see that

Should questions be about problems?

You can see who voted by looking at Constituent awardings, but not who they voted for

Always ?

Not necessarily IMO

3:12 PM
@djsmiley2k sufficient but not necessary

Q: How do Bing's web search and Yahoo's one track my clicks?

WayneXMayersXGoogle has a service called Google Analytics which permits users owning websites to see what keywords have been typed on Google Search to go in that specific website. Howsoever, both Bing Search and Yahoo's one are not much documented. Do they track my clicks? If yes, how can I prevent them from...

feels bad
I'm trying to decide if it's even editable into a usable question.
'How can I stop Yahoo and Bing tracking me' is one, but surely the answer is the same for all internet tracking?

Actually, that feels like something people would care about.
maybe!

But I feel like I'm half changing the authors intent (discuss how yahoo and bing track differently from google...? )

its off-topic
should be webapps

or security
I always think webapps is about developing them, not using them

3:15 PM
its about using them
@JourneymanGeek i've had that

@Burgi Is it about not being used by them?

what i meant is webapps is about the usage of the aforementioned

nod.
So does it sitll apply
I feel like security is a better bet.

webapps is about using them
but this feels client side, so on topic for us

the van rental place near my new flat is shut on saturdays!
and they are charging me an additional £100 to drop it off at their other site, 3 miles away

3:28 PM
..........
someone just claimed that because the network is slow, it's going to take over 24 hours for a printer to map to a system.
-_-;

@djsmiley2k covering themselves for a group policy update?

nah
friday afternoon

3:43 PM
@Burgi that sucks

i'm going to ask if they can waive the charge

shut on a saturday? wut
'I'll drive up and post the keys through the postbox'

i love driving a van
it makes you feel like a real bloke
driving about getting stuff done

lol

@Burgi Is a white one? ;p
"White van man" is a stereotype used in the United Kingdom for a smaller-sized commercial van driver, perceived as selfish, inconsiderate, mostly petit bourgeois and aggressive. According to this stereotype, the "white van man" is an independent tradesperson, such as a plumber or locksmith, self-employed, or running a small enterprise, for whom driving a commercial vehicle is not the main line of business, as it is for a professional freight-driver. == Usage == The first recorded use in the British press was in an article titled "Number is up for White Van Man – scourge of the road." published...

3:54 PM
white and green
wow.... furniture is expensive
£350 for a box with a door on it!

go to ikea!

i'm looking at argos
i don't have ikea money
beer o'clock

4:16 PM
@Burgi ?? Your link says £103.49
Ikea Wardrobe ASKVOLL £69 ikea.com/gb/en/products/wardrobes
It's even got more space. (wider and taller) than the Argos one.
lol

Ikea stuff is 90% nice
Argos is hit and miss personally
and i've never had an issue getting spare parts at ikea either
even when it's been weird ones they've ordered them in for me

It was more that @Burgi said he couldn't afford IKEA and it's 1/4 the price ...
@djsmiley2k I used to raid the spares bin at IKEA. Got lots of useful bits ;p
It was like 1 euro for a bag full of stuff

4:37 PM
Nice
they don't do that at mine, as far as I know
there's a whole spares department, with walls of little draws with different bits in it

hmm...

@djsmiley2k Yeah, that's what they had. You could buy stuff from the drawers by the bag full ...
Maybe that's a NL thing.

4:54 PM
wow... just wow...
can I superping someone who's on the mod election list here just to berate them for improper recognition of spam

I guess the mod room would be even more apt?

@JourneymanGeek please educate music2myear in how NOT to comment on spam posts.
@M.A.R. i'm not a superuser mod ;)

I'm not a regular so I'm not in the position to say clearly

@ThomasWard I hope that wasn't me :/

@DavidPostill if it was I'd smack you in CHQ or here.

4:55 PM
@DavidPostill tsk tsk tsk
@DavidPostill If it were you he wouldn't have needed to superping

What's the mod election have to do with it?

@djsmiley2k Most prolly one of the candidates has failed to recognize spam properly

@M.A.R. Yep.

@ThomasWard So? That room would be even better, kinda specialized to bringing this stuff to people's attention. But this room should work either.
That room has been empty as hell

There's been some questioning going on in the comments of the questionnaire

4:59 PM
xD
this one?
whoops
nuke that, I meant to link his comment.

I sometimes comment on spam, only if it's not clear, so future viewers will flag it correctly.

Tis pretty clear.

In this case, yes.

@djsmiley2k You can delete your own message with the dropdown on the left

ah yes, I can, ty
I thought it was on the right and couldnt' see it for some reason :D

5:01 PM
@BenN link?

Which link?
Oh, the questionnaire
20
Q: 2017 Moderator Election Q&A - Questionnaire

Grace NoteIn connection with the moderator elections, we are holding a Q&A thread for the candidates. Questions collected from an earlier thread have been compiled into this one, which shall now serve as the space for the candidates to provide their answers. Not every question was compiled - I actually too...

there we go, ctrl + v not working.

. . . Are you sure he meant the questionnaire, not the dispute?

ffs beaten again.

I don't see the dispute

5:02 PM
@M.A.R. it got nuked if you mean the post.

@djsmiley2k It's technically called 'being ninja'd', as I'm told

There's a dispute?

After I said 'nuke' meaning my posting... xD
@BenN I don't think so
Just someone wondering why a mod nomination doesn't understand the spam flagging process...
I am wondering why the rule/saying/unwritten law about not commenting on spam though?

@BenN Oh, I thought you meant some good dramastuff by 'questioning'. You were just making a pun. Facepalm

Does it slow down the flagging as spam process or something?

5:04 PM
Guess who lost my vote.
Don't make puns, dammit

@M.A.R. Sorry to disappoint :)
@djsmiley2k I don't believe so

At least he didn't edit the spam ...

oh god haha
hmmm someone stolen all the pens off my dest :/

@djsmiley2k Sometimes commenting on spam and telling people that it's spam shows we're on to them, so they try to evade it by being smarter next time. That isn't what's meant here though
@BenN Meh, I'm just kidding

Yep :)

5:06 PM
@djsmiley2k Who was this penless person? IMO buying it is easier than stealing it from someone else's desk
Unless you've dropped them on the floor

nah, someone dumped about 10 pens on my desk in a pile
today i noticed there's none left
yesterday there was about 3 :/
@M.A.R. most spam is just bots... and if it gets deleted, surely thats a sign 'we are onto it'

@djsmiley2k But not all spam

Also if spam gets so good it can sell me a product without me even realising it, we can retire smokey
Any human who goes 'Oh that's odd, my post just disappeared, I best just keep posting' is clearly too stupid to be helped or taught anyway.

It's a shame we can't see (publicly) the flag record for candidates ... we can just see n help full flags, not how many rejected there were ...

Notice how they made sure the real spam isn't visible unless you scroll

5:14 PM
@M.A.R. Oh, that is very sneaky. 3 people approved and one rejected for the wrong reason. Only 1 spotted the spam. It's only obvious in markdown mode.

Matthias reviewed this Dec 10 '14 at 14:49: Approve
Howard Renollet reviewed this Dec 10 '14 at 14:42: Approve
Albin reviewed this Dec 10 '14 at 14:31: Approve
wtf

I might have missed that one. I will have to be more careful in future ... :)

i'd suggest that the code boxes should wrap in render mode while reviewing...

@djsmiley2k Further WTF is it stayed for more than one year on the site

@M.A.R. no one wants to review stuff already reviewed

5:17 PM
Well, there can be a thousand justifications if you want to make them up
But yeah, people hardly review, let alone review reviews

hehe
yup
well, I can't review more.
litterally :/
And answering and asking questions is kinda hard too

van hire company is waiving the £100 fee
home time

arugh 60 sec time out on posting an answer and I wanna go home

5:42 PM
@M.A.R. Would a meta-review queue help; à la metamoderation on /. ?

Nah, don't think so

Well, I'll get me coat...

It's kinda an idealist idea. Idealism usually fails.
Lazy people find weird ways to circumvent the system

I suggested it more as a practical measure, as implemented by a (previously?) popular website with tons of user-generated content
But fair point :P
Having more eyes on any given Q/A should help though? Plus the 'worse' you were reviewed by metamoderation, the less often you got mod points. Not sure how well that would fit here, as everyone who has the right privs gets 20 reviews per day.
If review queues are low/empty, can the SE system throw more posts up for (re-)review?
(surely having very low / zero queue numbers means people actually are on-the-ball about reviewing?)

6:04 PM
Before I write my own (again); does anyone know of a web-based manager for launching game servers? Just something for my friends and I to use; I don't need all the 'game server hosting company' stuff that seem to populate the search results.

@bertieb The idea I loved which never was and never will be implemented is separating the system of moderation and reputation.

@M.A.R. I can see why they went the way they did, but separating the two would open up some options

The dragon is back in the spam hunt 🐲
Found spam on the blog at technied.com/merits-of-using-advanced-and-free-android-apps. It's linked to from the blog post referred in this answer; however, the blog post itself contains no direct spam links. Clearly, someone is actively trying to evade spam detection. — bwDraco 13 secs ago

7:01 PM
@bertieb on what platform? Steam or not Steam? it's entirely "game-specific" and depends on how the game was designed, what platforms it supports and how to install and configure it

Woohoo
Got a 128GB memory card replaced

@allquixotic Mmmm. Platform-agnostic, really. I already have the servers installed; just want a web interface so that my friends buddies co-conspirators can start/stop/restart them themselves without needing me to

Carphone Warehouse are the same old law breaking scammer douchebags they always were, dunno what I was expecting there... But argos happily replaced a card without a box or a receipt.

Seems a little bespoke though; probably to get it all integrated/turn-key would need to back down the route of an 'all-in-one' game server install/management platform

If you don't want to use the pre built stuff I suspect roll your own is the only other way to do it.
Or have someone else build it for you but I doubt that's any easier

7:05 PM
@TOWMN Which pre-built stuff? :P
I previously wrote some bash scripts to interface with some php which gave status and ability to stop/start; but it was fragile, cumbersome and inflexible to add new servers
(fragile because of watching pid files, across 'reboots' (well, VM turnover) etc)
Basically I know enough to half-ass it
But I figure it isn't really a wheel I should be reinventing
If indeed the wheel is already there

7:21 PM
What host?

Me? A machine running Debian in my loft...

Hmm. I thought you were running it in the cloud...

@bwDraco does the blog post answe the question tho?

7:47 PM
@djsmiley2k Funnily enough, it technically does.

so, how far do we want to go, before we find spam...
giving a source for the answer, and the source also has spam on it?

@djsmiley2k The linked blog post did not have spam. However, said blog post contained an internal link to another post that did in fact contain spam.

This isn't the first time I've seen this. When will these spammers learn to respect us...

yeah, so if an answer is good, but 2 links down there's spam...
i'm sure in 2 links, I could find spam on wikipedia...
see my point yet?
My point is only valid when the 'answer' in question has answered it as well, obviously

7:50 PM
That's a harder call. That's something a mod would have to decide on...
The blog as a whole consisted primarily of spammy and questionably legal content.

yeah

Maybe the blog is compromised?

this is a fun meta question
how/where do we decide to draw the line

@bertieb I've seen legitimate blogs with spam storefronts, but that's a different matter.

Root Access, you're not the paypal password field!
2
(nearly made a bit of a whoopsy)

7:54 PM
rofl

@bwDraco Fair enough! Tough call really- I suppose if an example link were nuked, an answer should stand on it's own merits without the link

@bertieb Correction: Root Access is GREATER than the PayPal password field (because it's root level access... get it? rimshot)

@ThomasWard :P
Fortunately I checked which window had focus before slamming enter

@bertieb diamonds can nuke your message and then nuke rev. history, so... if it's that bad a PII breach :P
(I've had to request such erasures in the past oops)

(haste and multi-tasking do not comfortable bedfellows make)
@ThomasWard Useful to know!
I think the paranoia would be enough for me to start a new life in another country change the password and recovery info

7:57 PM
heh

8:14 PM
@bertieb I do this every time with my unlock password on my linux desktop now
incasei've already unlocked it and just the screensaver has kicked in.
@ThomasWard ti wouldn't erase it from anyone logging tho
so obv. still change everything

@djsmiley2k Not fun, amirite? :P

This is why using single passwords is a good idea
if you know you've just wiped 43594yheySAWE@!2 from the face of the planet, you don't care who logged it

I use password vaults and then generate the longest password the site will accept
Use cloud and standalone vaults. So I always have access
Can't decide if I want synology or Drobo NAS, synology supports syncing to cloud services but I can change the directory in every provider I use, but Drobo offers a good warranty plan where they send you the tools to recover your data
choixes choices...

8:29 PM
Got this while opening Roccat Swarm:
---------------------------
Tablet Version Mismatch
---------------------------
Please reinstall the tablet software.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
What tablet software?
Hmm. Might be some weird interaction with the Wacom drivers...
I haven't used my Bamboo in ages...

@djsmiley2k true, but the question then is "Why should I be concerned if it was nuked immediately :P
but you're not wrong.
goes back into the ethereal realms

Looks like my tablet software is working properly, though.
I plug in the wireless adapter, turn on the Bamboo, and it comes up as it should.

8:46 PM
I'm a little surprised that the battery has aged this well. I guess I won't have to spend another $40 on another Wireless Accessory Kit.

zzzzz reinstalling Windows 7 on a family members laptop. Copy the product key out... After I reinstall Windows and go to enter the product key, apparently it's invalid. :|

9:08 PM
COA?
And/or use phone activation = best method

@Ramhound It's got a Vista COA.
It's a piece of junk... but my Nana wants to give it to my cousin, so I'm just trying to get it limping along

Any idea where the 7 key came from perhaps it's in an email?

Nah, I have a feeling a 'computer shop' installed this copy of 7 on here.

Or we're you just sounding off :-)
Is it worth $99 to just upgrade it to 10?

Nope.
I'm putting Ubuntu on it and calling it a day. :P

9:13 PM
^^ ++

I have a feeling I wrote the key down wrong... so slightly kicking myself, but I'm just gonna choose to believe the shop that installed this was dodgy.

9:51 PM
lol

@MichaelFrank you probably should have installed a proper linux

@tereško The end user is a farmer, and they're not particularly computer saavy.

then just hope he has no internet connection
since ubuntu has habit of breaking Xorg with automatic updates

Honestly, I expect the machine to just stop working before then.

10:27 PM
omfg... have you seen the daily mails front page?
forgive me but why on earth would you need to google "how to use a car as a weapon"?

Step 1: Drive really fast into the thing you're trying to damage

also.... take a look at the by-line
it took 3 reporters to google it...

10:43 PM
@Burgi because daily mail xD

i just saw it on the kitchen table and it made me angry

...
It's on your kitchen table?

my parents read it

humanity jdied a liuttle

@BenN So now you're a terrorist's friend?
But... the information is replicated here
ROOT ACCESS IS THE TERRORISTS' FRIEND
:P
The serious question is what does the DM have to do by showing google in that light?
I'm not sure that Google = terr'st sells more papers

11:05 PM

@Ramhound, I believe that the author's comment was a reply intended for you. Normally I would jump right in and support what you said, but the OP and I already have a rather odd relationship in the aftermath of his HNQ question:
-1
Q: Why is windows 10 always asking for administrator permission to move files?

Kyle DelaneyI am the one and only administrator. Is there any way I can alter the settings to make sure it never asks for administrator permission again? I've found solutions applying to Windows 7 and Windows 8. I'd like a solution that applies specifically to Windows 10. EDIT: Perhaps this question's bad ...

Somewhy denyhosts added $new_server to $old_server's /etc/hosts.deny
I've removed the offending line, but still can't connect still; what do?
(I think $old_server knows its being decomissioned; and is just being ornery as a result)

11:46 PM
is denyhosts a daemon, i've never actually used it?

@Run5k already replied to that comment, then they replied, got fed up with the attitude they have, and deleted my comment

@Ramhound, totally understandable, good sir. Of course, your advice was exactly right, but he tends to have very strong opinions that the contributors probably can't sway, which I also learned within his HNQ post last week.
I was specifically told "This works! Thank you. I have a few choices for the correct answer here. I hope you don't mind me picking one with fewer votes." I am not that anxious for an accepted answer, but wording it in that manner was rather disappointing.
