Bob
3:00 AM
all that crap hanging off mine and it still works fine :P

I do have these Monoprice extensions
but those are connected to the externally powered HUBs

Bob
now I'm even more confused
there is no Maximus VII Extreme AFAICT
are you sure you didn't buy some dodgy knockoff?
also, all motherboards will have some USB ports on the back I/O panel

It was VI not VII :-)
i am positive it's not knockoff and it does have a back panel (6 USB 3 ports) and in think 4 USB 2
bought it from Newegg
the day it came out
I can guarantee you it's the USB 3 controller I have
I believe it's the Intel one described in that article

Bob
@Ramhound oh, you said 7 :P
@Ramhound are you using those?

Yeah found the manual 1 min after I said 7
Are the extenders I am using not at that length obviously like 15 feet, enough to Hub on desk to floor

Bob
3:09 AM
ew. active repeater cables are ... ew.

Well I figured, lol good to know :-)
What do you recommend to extend those extremely short Hub cables :-)
so stuff is accessible:-)

Bob
eh... a fairly typical 1-2m cable? :P
I think 3m is where issues start occurring
of course, it's hard to get a good ext cable because technically they're all against spec
at least for my current hub I actually went and got a proper length A-to-B cable

Whats better for gameing

Right, that's a duh!
moment, could have done that, lol

@Neil PS4

3:12 AM
Switch
One
NeoGeo!
Lynx!
Pick one :-)
Switch ripped off the Lynx so much :-)
it was 3D graphics, in the 90s, and had carts.
16MB of video memory but stil :-)

Lynx wasn't a touchscreen though.

<doesn't seriously think Nintendo ripped off Atari Lynx>

whats better for Gaming

Computer1
CPU:Intel® Core™ i3-530
RAM:DDR3 8GB RAM 1066mhz
GPU:GTX980

Computer2
CPU:Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9400
RAM DDR2 8GB 800mhz
GPU:GTX980

Computer 1.

@MichaelFrank is that becasue it has DDR3 RAM

3:16 AM
And the processor is better.

@MichaelFrank Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9400 out benchmarks the Intel® Core™ i3-530

No; PC with DDR2 is worth purchasing in 2017

Bob
@Ramhound also that's a USB 2.0 cable? yea that's gonna murder your speeds

yeah I got USB 3 cables also
i think it's the length i got. Didn't bother to measure what I need and got longer :-)

Bob
@Neil ...they're both terrible (except the GPU). I hope you aren't paying money for them?

3:18 AM
Anything but Free is to much for the CPU

@Ramhound Press the Up arrow to edit your last post...

@Bob nope free recycled parts.

Tired!
mobile fail

Bob
@Neil that's much better :P

3:19 AM
@Bob trying to find out what would be better than my setup all all ready got
@Bob what is pritty mush CPU:Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9400
RAM DDR2 4GB 800mhz
GPU:GTX980

alright; I need sleep;

Bob
@Neil I'd say architecturally the Westmere (i3) is ahead, but it's before the Sandy Bridge (ix-2xxx) big break...
@Ramhound 'night

at least i can upgrade it to an i7 when i got the money

Bob
@Neil you're gonna need a mobo upgrade either way. don't be fooled by the branding, the sockets are incompatible between a Westmere "i3" and a modern (Kaby Lake) i7.

3:23 AM
Going with the LAN NAS, will solve the desktop pro hdd problem after that :-) the LAN would allow me to connect to my router and it would be just a device on the networks would have to plug the USB 3 into my pc

Bob
Honestly, at this point, if you're paying money you'd get more bang for your buck with a low-end Kaby or Ryzen (AMD) CPU than buying a 7 year old one
but since it's free...
@MichaelFrank Those scores are utterly useless

newer architectures mean windows 10, not a deal breaker for me, but it is for some

@Bob Which is my point, really.

Bob
They try to distill "features" down into a single numerical score
@MichaelFrank The passmark/cpubenchmark one is more useful, actually
the cpuboss rubbish is just ... utter rubbish
Benchmarks are quantifiable
"features" are not

Except when they have a bug in their benchmark software lol

3:26 AM
Okay, fair point.

how dose the core i3 get 7.1 when it dose not mush better than the core2 quad 9400

Ryzen apparently was getting horrible multi-threaded performance but AMD investigated it and determine the benchmark was at fault :-$

@Neil essentially, modern processors are focused on things other than pure performance
they are much more efficient, have better support for ram and newer PCIe standards and so on
wait, you got that GPU free?

@JourneymanGeek no brought the GPU every thing else is free. im all ready useing the GPU

Bob
3:28 AM
@Ramhound hm? I don't remember that at all

@Neil did you already?

There was some bug that was fixed. Details are fuzzy

Not really the best choice there unless you're going to upgrade everything else

Bob
The benchmarks always showed multi-thread perf as fine under certain conditions, but not-so-fine in many real-world applications

@Bob Wasn't that the thing Draco was going on about when he starting accusing Nvidia of playing dirty?

3:29 AM
point being Ryzen was doing better then it appeared

Bob
@MichaelFrank Nvidia has literally nothing to do with Ryzen

my computer a potato just trying to make a better potato

@Neil a 960/1060 would have been a better fit
and handled anything up to 1440/60hz

@Bob Yea, I'm aware of that. I'm not the one that accused Nvidia of meddling with the benchmark software.

@Neil a little old but totally worth a read hothardware.com/reviews/…

Bob
3:31 AM
@MichaelFrank I think you're confusing Ryzen with Vega/Polaris

@Bob Hmm... maybe?

In this case it was just a bug, not purposeful

@Bob Oh, maybe I'm thinking of Intel >.>

Brain fried, night, puppy day!

3:32 AM
@Bob i been running witcher3 on high with 4GB of ddr2 RAM page swaping to an SSD with a core2 quad 9400 with a gtx 980 a gpu can make a old peace of shit run someing

Bob
@Neil you're probably replying to the wrong person, but... bottlenecks, man
a GTX 960 probably would've achieved similar performance

@Neil essentially there's no need for a 980 for most workloads

Bob
Simply because they're all massive leaps over 2008-era GPUs
oh well
anyway. the CPU. eh. hard choice.

I have a 980ti, and a few here have 1080s, but we run 4k or ultrawide or high refresh rate displays

Bob
practically, they're tied in single-thread performance
the core2quad gets better multithread perf

3:35 AM
@Bob having more cores ? ;p

Bob
the big leaps on nehalem/westmere are mostly in chipset integration
DDR3, dropping the FSB, etc
those won't make much practical difference, I suppose...
@MichaelFrank ah, yes. that good ol' "let's take a couple rumors and make a clickbait article out of it"
Westmere was pre-USB 3.0 too
@Neil Flip a coin :P
Technically you might get sliiiiightly better perf on the core2quad. maybe.
it could flip the other way if your bottleneck is on single-thread and memory access speeds

ooh
My copy of maxims turned up

People have been busy. Down to under 240 items in the review queue

@JoeTaxpayer: no it doesn't make sense at all, because Solo was asked if the ship was fast. You can also make it in twelve parsecs if you're riding a space snail. — R. Martinho Fernandes Feb 2 '11 at 1:12

Q: Which ship can go faster, the Millennium Falcon or the USS Enterprise?

g.rocketAs far as I can tell, both universes have equally objective ideas of speed. Do we know how fast the two ships can go? Which is faster?

@JourneymanGeek Seems like I'm making the edit review queue grow, ever so slowly as well. Only a few each day, and not too fast with most of the fixes either. Though they seem to get reviewed fast enough anyway.

A: Deleted Outlook messages stay on screen

MattYou may be in luck because Outlook 2010's handling of IMAP is better than in previous versions but is still pretty stinky. The first step is to hold the deleted messages that have the line through them. Ckick on View and then Change View and you'll see Click the "Hide Mess..." button. Nex...

That's got it's own set of problems.

@GypsySpellweaver its mostly empty. As is the new user queue. Now its just the close queue

@JourneymanGeek Hasn't been edited, so can't say it's defaced. But somehow an image ain't what it's supposed to be

Yeah
I don't think imgur images change tho

The instructions "sounded" right though. And I've found lots of imgur images missing.

7:05 AM
That's odd tho
i.stack images shouldn't ever go away

@JourneymanGeek They seem to though

Q: Find text on an image

cregoxI want to be able to find text on the following awesome image and where the text is located in it. This is not the first time I stumbled upon such a challenge and probably many people have similar questions from time to time as well. I think this stands as a good instance of the general issue. T...

I'm finding more and more of those black boxes.

hm that might be a main meta post
But if its non essential, meh, remove it.
ugh
this is a mess up
So you need to convert the links, then reupload.
ugh

7:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek so the original link was "i.imgur... and had been altered to "i.stack.imgur..."? If that's correct, I may know a lot of missing screen shots that can be fixed.

yup
so the i.imgur should work, but you'll need to reupload them

no proplem, that's what I'm here for.
my notes will let me find them easily.
I thought it strange when I started running into a bunch of missing imgur images. Guess people started using it, then SE got things set up with them and the conversion dropped a bunch.

yup
I'm suprised they didn't notice
SE's devs and CMs are pretty much on the ball

@JourneymanGeek Over half a decade-old posts. easy to miss.

change happened half a decade ago ;p
I'm surprised the original images are still around

7:54 AM
@JourneymanGeek Some aren't i.imgur.com/leKW1.png is gone

I guess not
I'm surprised any of them are around ;p

Still, what we can get now, is less lost later

8:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek user nicorellius has lots of images that were on his server http://nicorellius.com/images/..., and are now gone. Wonder if he has an ancient site backup?

erf
there's no real way to know. edit, annotate and move on.
gotta hate it when people do that.
If you can find the stuff on way back machine...

I've had very little luck with that :(. most are 'robots.txt' blocked at crawl time. Or the 'save' was so late as to get the 404 anyway. Probably from when they crawled here and tried to load it themselves.
Found a funny imgur name. Most are some random alphanumeric name, this was "CWest". Ok, random can happen, but that's still weird.
Dropbox, imagebin, imagechicken are all missing files and that's a lot of the old ones :(

Yeah. There was this guy who went through and fixed a ton of those. Guess he missed those

Nothing to fix, 90% of those are screenshots that I can't create, and the question can't live without. "looked like this.. now looks like that.. help!" WTF is "this" and "that"?

Close as unclear :p

8:22 AM
Some are good enough at the description, and/or I've seen it myself, so I can recreate the shots in one of my VMs and repost that instead

8:34 AM
morning

Hello

Jello

8:50 AM
@Rahul2001 How'd it go programming by hand?

yey no more first posts

I remember like 6months-1yr ago @DavidPostill or someone asking people to help work on them, as it was so high all the time
nice to see it came good :D

i think there has been a huge influx of people due to the election

@GypsySpellweaver It was okayyyy

8:52 AM
@djsmiley2k I've done a few on U&L, but the queue is usually empty when I go there.

I've done 450 :D

@Rahul2001 I remember doing it that way all the time.

ok right click has stopped working on my system :(

@GypsySpellweaver How does syntax even work like that?

8:53 AM
@Rahul2001 very, very carefully.
Write it out, punch the cards, run the deck, get the printout, guess what went wrong, repunch a few cards, try again. wash rinse repeat.

you got a printout of the fault though, right?

@Burgi Maybe, if you were lucky. If it's a logic error, or a formatting error, who knows.

not even a line hint?

is that a stack trace?

9:01 AM
assembly with data trace. forward, not backward like stack trace is.

i can't even see if there is a fault there

Address 0004 and 0005 need to be reversed. Line 3, far end "AB" abnormal

why are the values in 0032 and 003A underlined?

@Burgi Not sure. That's part of the guess work. Back then it was the reverse of 'code golf' we wrote a lot, the computer wrote cryptically , we had to guess what it meant. At least with assembly there was a 1:1 between written code and executed code.

10:05 AM
@djsmiley2k It takes about 11 1/2 hours to overwrite a 4TB drive at 100 MB/sec... — Andrew Henle 6 mins ago
26Mb/s writing /dev/zero to a device?
is it me, or is that really slow?

10:36 AM
Heh. Life is weird.

10:55 AM
Non-English posts are weird.

lol

11:24 AM
wat.
!!wat
So if you turn on windows basic theme, in win7
IE stops rendering coloured backgrounds among other things...
That white text on a grey background you had? It's now invisible!

@djsmiley2k I get that in Chrome on Linux all the time, in the browser itself rather than the content. The download list at the bottom and all the tooltips are worthless. Don't care enough to dig into a fix for it yet either.
@djsmiley2k Good to know from a web developer's stand point. Just another IE gotcha.

yeah, I was like wtf?!
I mean there's Seperate settings in IE, just for this anyway
Should I post it as a question and answer I wonder.
welp I can't see a dup.

@djsmiley2k Maybe post it as a question looking for an override so that IE Don't react that way under basic theme.

11:40 AM
Meh, posted as Q and A.
Obviously others might have other solutions too, which I'll upvote if approiate.
the user wasn't even aware the theme had changed.

@djsmiley2k Solution: stop using IE

@Rahul2001 \o/

I know corporate environments and all that but seriously.

lol
TSA and such

@Rahul2001 Near as I can tell Firefox is available everywhere that has a GUI.

11:48 AM
apart from iOS

And Windows 3.1

it was netscape in those days

@Burgi iOS can get it from the AppStore
@Burgi Or was it Mozaic?

@GypsySpellweaver its just a reskinned safari, it isn't true FF

And ChromeOS (can be done, but you need to install ChrUbuntu or Crouton)

user226528
11:52 AM
Hi, everyone!

user226528
:)

@DavidPostill and OS/2 ....
The haiku fork is a bit naff tho

11:56 AM

ah, its amusing to be proven wrong

@Burgi How can I tell the difference between a real firefox and a skinned safari? It's under the MPL, which shouldn't be able to link to safari's rendering engine, should it?

@JourneymanGeek ;p

@JourneymanGeek crispy

@GypsySpellweaver not sure, i know they can't use their own java libraries and it effectively just makes it a safari clone

11:59 AM
apple won't allow third party browser engines
