@TomWijsman least comfortable? as in, burn it to a DVD and do a clean install?
@Bob @TomWijsman At this point, considering how terrible the upgrade experience has been for most people, I'm probably just going to wait until the weekend (at the earliest) to see if MSFT has any patches/fixes in the first couple days for upgrade issues.
@allquixotic 1) Find some Microsoft Windows 10 downloader link somewhere in the comments of a Reddit thread. 2) Download it. 3) Freeze the process after it has the ESD file. 4) Turn that ESD file into an ISO file with some convertor you find on GitHub. 5) Burn that ISO on USB. 6) Run the setup from USB (in your booted Windows). 7) Remove files and registry entries for software not in your software list. 8) It finally manages to install.
That's funny, I was thinking of upgrading as well, but to hear that there's a downgrade button, I think it's better to stay in windows 8.1 for a while. lols.
"Gabriel Aul, confirmed via Twitter that those who prefer to perform a fresh install of Windows 10 instead of working with an upgraded version can do so at any point, , , , once they have received a license via the free upgrade initiative." And why cant they just get that via some Microsoft upgrade Licence site ?
The ISO is probably for a specific region in the USA; if we visit it, we get a tool to download our copy for our region / language / version / whatever...
@TomWijsman: If I use the media creation tool I have two options: 1) upgrade PC, 2) use an external device (USB/DVD). When I choose 1, I get that error immediately. When I choose 2 and my USB device, it downloads to 100%, then does two more steps and then in the middle of it stops and the error comes up.
Is it perfectly ordinary to run SODIMM PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600) at DDR3-1333 (PC3-10666) speeds? Can pretty much any decent stick of RAM clock down from 1600 to 1333?
@Huy The tool gives you an ESD file somewhere in a C:\$WINDOWS.WS folder. You can turn that ESD file into an ISO file with some tool you can find online.
damnitttttttttttt someone has hash browns from McDonalds in here and it's making me hungry... I'm trying to diet here and I smell golden brown fried potato.. -_- it calls to me
@DragonLord I don't really have the time to look into what's wrong with it right now. I can start it, but it won't show up in the room. I think they changed the authentication stuff and it broke my Selenium code.
I can look into running it with Zirak's node script though (ugh)
@JourneymanGeek Saw some page on reddit where all the different ISO files were linked to, not sure whether I could find that back. But yes, there are straight link.
@JourneymanGeek @DragonLord @TomWijsman Do any of you think it would be a good idea to write and maintain a GitHub Gist and pin it on the starwall with a sort of "FAQ" about the day-zero Windows 10 upgrade process?
I don't have the knowledge yet since I haven't upgraded personally, but there's a lot of info in the chat scattered in here so far
I just checked again, it simply exists after 2 seconds or so with the message "Something happened." (in Dutch). It says this twice actually. — Jeroen Bollen3 mins ago
Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. This computer is currently scheduled to install these updates on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at 10:12 AM:
- Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro
Event logs. Just gotta wait a few minutes.
I'm going home now.
Download is complete and Windows 10 is ready to be installed.
That is undoubtedly the improved error clarification that is in windows 10, if you could hear "Cortana" it would explain exactally what is wrong , and how to correct it :-)
PSA: If your system downloads Windows 10 but fails to install it with error 0x80240020, empty the contents of (but do not the delete) the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, then run` wuauclt.exe /updatenow` in an elevated command prompt.
@TomWijsman: Is there a way to get the start menu to open on my secondary screen when focus is currently on my secondary screen? It seems to open always on my primary screen, despite focus.
I've installed Windows 10. Then I tried to install the driver for my nvidia card (gtx 750) but it failed. At first restart the resolution became really high (1920x1080) so it seemed like the driver was installed successfully. Then suddenly black screen. I've restarted the computer and it went bac...
Sure it is a longstanding problem, but some people on the web are suggesting that the win10 updates will conflict with the manufactures driver and set it back to the windows update one.
Plus some noise about a failure due to dueling drivers
@NateKerkhofs what i am getting so far is it is better to snag the ISO , and do an "in Place Upgrade" this will still do the upgrade thing providing a key.
Generally "in place upgrade" methods are also a type of lapped install, or repair install kind of thing where you do not lose your user data and layout. although anyone messing with it who has not already secured thier user data and other software licencing , and a clone of thier working system, is basically nuts anyways
I've tried the 'reserve' method, after a reboot my icon is gone. I've tried the MediaCreationTool and it just says "something happened" I am now trying to get my icon back and getting the error above.

Microsoft just released the final Windows 8 versions for MSDN members, before its consumer release in october.
Anyway, I am a MSDN member. Today I went to see my downloads page and I found a list of the new versions to be downloaded.
