@DragonLord Or just give up.

@DragonLord that might be a great reason to download the whole ISO one time, put it in a safe place, and perform the in place upgrade install from it?

Downloading 29%.

loop

If the upgrade fails this time, I'll download the ISO, burn to disc, and perform an in-place upgrade from there.

Huy
@TomWijsman: It's activated now. I guess Microsoft's server had a lot of traffic so it took a while.

4:09 PM
on the other hand if you ever did solution it, it would make a good single referrable answer, right before MS fixes this crap and obsoletes the answer from ever being needed again

TIL
other than your system having 1GB less usable memory (that's how much the protected VM takes) and an extra process running—and initially it's going to be pretty unusual. Not only does it require the Enterprise version of Windows, it also requires the use of hardware CPU virtualization (VT-x on Intel processors, AMD-V on AMD ones) and I/O virtualization (VT-d on Intel processors, AMD-Vi on AMD ones) along with TPM hardware and UEFI Secure Boot.

4:22 PM
Okay, I've burnt my ISO. I still got about 5-6 hours today. should I risk it, or wait for tomorrow?
Screw this, be awesome or die trying
not so awesome anymore... "The system reserved patition cannot be edited

well one should always sleep first, although staying up for an extra 24 hours , and solving it in 5 minutes after you wake up again is always fun.

@HackToHell what protected VM?

Apparently, something went wrong during my SSD migration and my system reserved partition is not located on my SSD

Mornign all

oh great, I need to unplug my HDD and then run the Windows 7 disk again
so my Windows 7 repair disk can install the system reserved partition on the SSD

4:37 PM
Preparing for installation.

@NateKerkhofs there is something i barely remember about this a MSR on a GPT does not show in DM ?

I checked my disk management already
looks similar to this guy's
only my SSD also has 100 MB partition

there is some special, ahh heck it shows up when you do a diskpart info, that was it, but not in disk managment.

there, a reserve partition that does not show in disk management when it is a GPT disk. >Diskpart , then >select Disk # , then >List partition.
Not saying i know what , or why, I just found it odd.
there is no display reason , why this partition does not show up in the grafics or in the list view.

4:54 PM
@allquixotic read up in that link

@Psycogeek Thing is, after I ran the Windows Repair Tool on the disk, it did find an issue and fixed it
I don't know if it's the same issue, but still

@HackToHell I did a find for "GiB", "GB", "Gigabyte", "VM", "virtual", "protected", "VT-X", "UEFI", nothing

apparently, it's not the partition location, but the partition size
Windows 10 apparently needs a system reserved partition of more than 100 MB

Windows Update failed to install Windows 10. I'll try it manually with the downloaded files. If not, I'll use the downloaded ISO.
(The ISO is almost ready.)

5:11 PM
my iso as well is almost ready
my home pc seemed to go without a hitch
but I didn't see it complete before I came back to work.

How can I shrink a partition to the left?
This is what my partition table looks like right now
from what I've read, there are 2 things wrong with this: my system reserved space is on the wrong disk, and it's too small
I want to make it bigger by 400 MB. how?

@NateKerkhofs to do that when there is data crammed against that partition "wall" you would probably use something like a partition manager , which will shift stuff away from the wall , then change the partition table. always recommend that a backup is made first, and only partly suppporting software can break stuff. Easus partition master, parigon partition manager, that kind of thing.

I'm going to use partition wizard
The only thing that's on my F drive is a game that I've already finished, so I don't mind if something might break on that
and it's a steam game, so verify game cache works

partition wizard does not support this

5:24 PM
some of the software that would do some thing for free, wont do the really extensive moving, and sometimes wont work for GPT untill you Pay :-(
There still has to be one free something out there, even if it works off a linux boot disk or something.

I noticed that. I'm now trying Paragon
I can only do "express resize", it appears, and that cannot continue because my partitions aren't the same type
Now trying Easeus partition manager
"do you want this random bit of crapware"? no I fucking do not!
3

s/partition manager/malware manager/

maaaaaaaaaan
31 and I still dream of being a 'l33t hax0r' haha

"how to resize partitions with EPM: select this option from the dropdown" THAT OPTION ISN'T THERE!

I think I'll grab the win10 iso anyway, so my wifes win7 is saying she can upgrade but I have no clue of her win7 key? ;/

5:33 PM
it was probably in the malware :-)

I'm thinking swap to a SSD...

I'm going to try GParted now
I'll have to make another life disk for that

@djsmiley2k belarc
??
I haven't use belarc in a long time, but last I did it didn't have any crapware along with it

@rlemon someone else mentioned that for another PC I have to take care of
need to investigate

belarc just gives you a nice audit on your pc, including all keys
install, audit, remove.

5:43 PM
oh, hi @rlemon

nice, nice
I should do that
got an exportable format?

some of the grafic picture type of parition managers you cant grafically do what is not possible.
|----|-----<| shrink
move that over first giving unallocated space
|---|->|---->| | then move that
|-->|-----| then move that

posted on July 29, 2015

This, evidently, is how to blur an image in Swift.

@psycogeek Here's the issue: the Windows 7 default partition manager will only unallocate room to the right, but the partition I want to boost is to the LEFT of the partition I want to shrink
I've tried 3 different partition managers so far, all of them unable to resize in the free version

yea windows will only ever move what is fully free to move, without having to move any data.

5:48 PM
I'm currently using GParted Live to try and get it to work

@tereško ohai
@djsmiley2k it saves it as a .htm file iirc

Gparted also can't resize the HDD...

Preparing to install Windows 10 from mounted ISO.

@DragonLord good luck

In other news, my Xiaomi Piston III earbuds just arrived.
Windows 10 Pro x64.

5:53 PM
I'm this close to just reinstaling Windows 7 tomorrow from a fresh start
Failed to check '/dev/sdb3' mount state: no such file or directory

@rlemon that'll work, nice.

I am still waiting for the reports to come in

@NateKerkhofs well if you had better assistance . . . like someone who would even install windows 10 you might be further along.

then I will decide whether it's worth it to upgrade now
I dont want all my games to break

@psycogeek I've stopped pretending like I can even install Windows 10 tonight.
My windows install is just broken, it seems
my system reserved partition is too small to install windows 10, and on the wrong disk, even
I'm just going to do a fresh install tomorrow

5:58 PM
I'm wondering what kinda key my wife has on her laptop
As it's a HP laptop (iirc)
So I suspected it'd be a gimped OEM key, but concidering it wants to do the win10 upgrade I'm left wondering

why won't my DVD drive open?

the disk 'splode!

delayed opening, it seemed like

@NateKerkhofs you sure you have one to begin with ?

@tereško It sure as hell isn't my cupholder

6:01 PM
it's just that last time I used a dvd was about 2 years ago .. reinstalling the OS on an old computer before giving it to charity

I specifically went to my computer store 2 years ago to get a decent recovery disk for my desktop
because it's an OEM install, and apparently you can't use a non-OEM disk to install those

First reboot

Why does my F-drive have 11 GB used even though it's empty in explorer?

Is it me, or are the Pistons a bit boomy with the bass?

6:08 PM
@DragonLord isnt that the point? pistons combustion

The mids and highs are certainly pretty good

Are you taking pictures of that sucessfull install ?

Yes
Not yet able to upload them, though. I'm using my DSLR.

dont get all distrated with your new toys, microsoft will encryt your whole computer and lock you out when your not looiking.

Installing features and drivers.

6:10 PM
But do tell how the oobe sound works with em :-)

The bass is strong on the Pistons, yet they don't seem to really hurt the mids and highs.
The highs are not as pronounced as my Sennheiser MX365's (the strong bass covers them up a bit) but they're surprisingly smooth.

highs arent supposed to be smooth they should be "crisp" make the dog perk up.
just admit it, they rolled off some highs to pump up the bass,

Aside from the boomy base (pretty typical for earbuds these days), sound rendition is very consistent across the spectrum, mids aren't sacrificed the way they are in the MX365's.

So how does that Microsoft Start sound, sound like?

Volume controls work as they should on the Nexus 9.
Third reboot.

6:19 PM
so this is Mic on the wire style?

On the wire to the right ear.
The cable is braided, like my Roccat mice, but is soft rubber past the Y split.

oooo, like macramé :-)

Sound should get a bit better with use as the drivers burn in.

Oh yea where did you hear that?

Head-Fi review.

6:24 PM
Lies, and sex, dont forget sex.

With my MX365's, there's a small but noticeable improvement when comparing a well-used pair to a new pair.
It's very slight and may not be noticeable to everyone but there certainly is a difference.

The only thing that burns in , is your themostatic human auto re-balancing to the differed perception of sounds. and a bit of mold trimming that rounds off eventually.

I'll say that burn-in is real, but the difference is generally very slight and not noticeable to everyone.
You'd need to pay pretty close attention to the sound to notice it.

as the sounds projection plate (now i sound like them) vibrates endlessly in the pocket it is retained.
@DragonLord So if i had 2 pairs of headphones, one burned in and the other not, you will have to psychically determine which one is "burned-In then you get the million doller PSI prize.

Logged in for the first time, setting up Windows for first use.
Windows Hello works with my existing fingerprint reader.

6:32 PM
as in desktop ?
say hello to my little finger.
What are you typing on anyways? and which one did you update?

I'm going to install Windows 7 again tomorrow from scratch

...and I'm at the desktop. Everything is working as it should.

maybe that'll fix my issues with my system reserved partition

@NateKerkhofs a win7 system reserve is smaller than the new stuff. plus there is only a few things it matters that it is larger, like bitlocker or something.
@NateKerkhofs why it would fail to install because of just that?

@Psycogeek It's important enough that Windows 10 installer will not continue if it's not big enough
I'm getting an error message when installing Windows 10 that my system reserved partition cannot be updated
AND my system reserve is on the wrong drive (my HDD instead of my SSD)

6:39 PM
MY GOD, it's so beautiful

so I'm hoping to fix both of these issues by doing a fresh install

It'll take me a while to get used to the new Start menu.

@DragonLord ahh jeez make sure you get pictures of the tears in your eyes.
Now don't forget to boot while your all glossy eyed there
4 hours ago, by Tom Wijsman
Probably a first boot has some first boot issues if you know what I mean... ^_^

Looks like the graphics drivers are not operational.
Also, I can't adjust brightness.

that might be good, that the updater didnt already shove some GPU driver in there.

6:52 PM
Nope, gotta fetch the drivers from Windows Update.

so you can get a real one, with 3000 extra registry entries and gobs of useless software (and chrome dont forget chrome in the installer :-)

No, that's not coming through Windows Update.
Audio is working normally.

whats normal? does it have a lot of extra bass?

No, I'm talking about the audio on my laptop.

oh you updated the laptop.

6:57 PM
A consequence of the system using generic video drivers is that I'm getting lots of screen tearing when moving windows.
The desktop effects feel a bit like Compiz :-)

Not to worry it does that when you do have drivers
really , some people were reporting simple desktop was not without grafical glitching, but it will smooth out after the OS burns-in.
It doesnt matter, it is NEW, it is FREE and damn-it you got it installed.
Now put it in your car, and drive around picking up chicks
" Hey baaabbbey want to see my new windows"
"you can play my games anytime"
" I installed it myself, even put in a new wallpaper"
Then put it on YouTube
"It's a 10, and so are you"
" I keep My other operating system (an apple) at home, Wanna See?"

7:40 PM
Nvidia just released a Windows 10 ready driver
my Geforce Experience just warned me about it
I'm going to try and upgrade my laptop now
So I'm switching devices right now
Looks like my windows 8.1 laptop has less issues with upgrading

Previous Versions and Windows 7 Backup and Restore are both back.

First hitch on my laptop: "Windows requires at least 5.7 GB of free space". My SSD only has about 120 GB
Let's hope disk cleanup can find enough to fix
it only needs to free about 1.7 GB

Remember that SSDs can perform poorly with that little free disk space.
Write amplification goes up, write speeds go down.
You definitely want to clean up the drive.
4 GB of free disk space is not a good thing at all.

7:55 PM
I see

@DragonLord 128 GB capacity of an SSD is not a good thing at all, either. That's much too small for most people.

I know. It's a boot drive for my laptop

It's hard - very, very hard - for me to manage my files on my Surface Pro 1 to keep them within the disk space limit.

I've moved as much as possible to the 1 TB HDD that's supposed to hold your data

I constantly perform disk cleanups, CCleaner stuff, delete every download as soon as I'm done with it... and I'm still bumping up against disk space limits by not deleting files and folders I actually need

8:03 PM
250 GB isn't quite enough for me, either.

Q: Move windows between monitors in task view?

ChipperymanWhen I try to move a window between monitors in Windows 10 Task View, the window gets stuck on the border of the monitor. This is a video of what happens This is my monitor screen setup:

I need at least a 512 GB-class drive (actual capacity at least 480 GB).

That's one crasy layout, i dont think even microsoft would have figured anyone setting thier multi-monitor screens like that.
ohh now i am wondering how that would look on a Desk in the physical layout of the monitors ? One 42" monitor on the wall above?

@DragonLord We know your name now!

8:17 PM
It's already public.

Oh... Well, I never went looking :P

@DragonLord nice, more

So anyone know how to troubleshoot the Windows Recovery Media Creator Tool when it doesn't want to get past 43%?

Can't help here, didn't run into this issue
@Psycogeek Sorry, system's still running updates and is not 100% ready to use.

Okay, I've removed about 40 GB

8:19 PM
@CanadianLuke checkout his website blog thing

Desktop's not running at 60 fps.

so I now got about 37 GB free

Windows has to install those video drivers.

since some stuff I removed also saved stuff on my D-drive

@NateKerkhofs elbow room

8:20 PM
I'm also getting screen tearing when I move windows.

Ahhh OK

@DragonLord How long did it take you to install Windows 10?

About 30 minutes. SSD helps here.

how many times did he TRY :-)

@DragonLord oh god the my pc and recycle bin icons... awkward

8:28 PM
@DragonLord in the right hand corner in the notification tray, there is missing the desktop peek through button? we know there is no longer glass, but did they remove the "Show Desktop" feature there?

@Psycogeek Peek is still there.
Just look closely at the image.

on the left? i dont know thier cryptic icons

Once Windows has been updated on my laptop, I'm going to bed

Bottom right
The circle at the bottom left is Cortana
To the right of that is Task View.

I need to get up early tomorrow so I can install most of Windows Update before noon, because bandwidth is free between midnight and noon for me

8:31 PM
@DragonLord how f---ing creative of them :-) they had better with XPs "agents"

I think it's actually pretty well chosen, considering where Cortana comes from
@Psycogeek Or have you never played a Halo game?

@NateKerkhofs i had halo installed for some time, and played a bit?
I do not really pay that much attention to story lines and interuptions to my gameplay though .

@Psycogeek The titular Halo is basically a ringworld, and Cortana was the AI that assisted the protagonist of the series from within their suit. So yeah, a ring for Cortana is pretty fitting
And hey, at least it's not a RROD

ahh, and what is a RROD?

@NateKerkhofs Original-model Xbox 360 consoles were prone to hardware failures.

8:35 PM
Red Ring of Death. Basically the Xbox 360 version of a BSOD, but more definitive

Anonymous
thermal design is hard to get right

Three of the four segments of the front panel LED ring would flash red when this happened.

lol ohhh it is becomming clear now

The Xbox 360 video game console is subject to a number of technical problems and failures that can render it unusable. However, many of the issues can be identified by a series of glowing red lights flashing on the face of the console; the three flashing red lights (nicknamed the "Red Ring of Death" or the "RRoD") being the most infamous. There are also other issues that arise with the console, such as discs becoming scratched in the drive and "bricking" of consoles due to dashboard updates. Since its release on November 22, 2005, many articles have appeared in the media portraying the Xbox 360...

I still remember how they brought Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston to teach people how to use W98

And these days they bring a bunch of youtube Celebs to promote CoD
or was it Battlefield?
I googled it, it was CoD
I like how Windows gives you a decent progress bar this time around
My Windows 8 to 8.1 upgrade was full of vague update messages

are you all people using Surface tablets? My windows hasn't even downloaded yet cc/@NateKerkhofs @DragonLord

@PatoSáinz We're both using an ISO
check the side bar for more information about them

ah right thanks

8:52 PM
Basically, download a tool, download an ISO, burn an ISO and then be lucky to have a PC that allows you to upgrade without having to mess with partition tables
If I do a fresh install of Windows 7 without saving data, does it also remove and recreate the system reserved partition?

@MichaelFrank hahahaha

@PatoSáinz wait, is that BEFORE or AFTER you burned your ISO?

8:58 PM
@NateKerkhofs when I opened MediaCreationToolx64.exe and clicked "upgrade this windows" or something akin to that hahahaha

Anonymous
I guess I'll go reboot

@PatoSáinz wait
Many people have issues with the "upgrade this windows now" options
the solution that works is to create either a USB drive or an ISO and use that to install

Anonymous
ok

still, this doesn't excuse "Something Happened/Something Happened"

@PatoSáinz I got that error as well
After that, I got an error about my system reserved partition

9:02 PM
hahahaha

so then I spent 2 hours trying to find tools to increase the size of my system reserved partition and to move it from my HDD to my SSD
which I failed miserably at after trying the Windows Partition manager, Partition Wizard, Paragon Partition manager, another partition manager and a GParted Live disk
At least my laptop just required me to uninstall a game and VS 2013

@JourneymanGeek looks like no accepted answer for me for that Excel question I had yesterday... :(

My windows update is completed, it seems
apart from a black desktop and some slightly different icons, I don't see any difference
Apparently, I need to change my OS name to English if I want to use Cortana, because she can't speak Dutch
Okay, who is the smartass who decided it is a good idea to include an UNREMOVABLE copy of Candy Crush Saga with Windows 10?

9:24 PM
@NateKerkhofs anyone know all the people invited to the focus groups deciding all the changes and removals, could play gem-drop like games for the whole day
I kind of doubt that the focus groups were downloading tor bit torrents :-) watching porn, and playing far-cry 5

So I still don't have the option to upgrade to Win10 on my gaming desktop. :(

@MichaelFrank knowing how well it works , you are a very luckey man, and can still get the update the old fassioned way , Download it from a link.

9:40 PM
But I'm at work and I want to do it remotely for when I get hoooooome.

oh well by the time you get home, MS will have been humiliated enough on the news that it may just work the first time.

The Twitter app, updated for Windows 10, was kept on upgrade and works as it should.
At least on my machine.

@MichaelFrank in the mean time pull out your flash disk and use the company computer to start downloading the viru- - operating system now.

@DragonLord On my machine, I didn't even have a Twitter application before the update, it was installed during the update, but not the most recent version, it seems
Anyway, I'm off to bed
Need to get up at 8 AM tomorrow so I can get my desktop up and running properly
And since it's close to midnight here and I want to read some in bed,...

@Psycogeek We have zero access to USB devices here.

9:53 PM
@MichaelFrank what kind crasy workplace is that? a secure one :-)

@Psycogeek Correct. It's a bank. We don't like bank data going walkies.

oh a bank, just get on the web then. upload it to your cloud storage

Had some trouble activating Windows 10 a little earlier. Didn't ask for a product key, just failed without an error code. This time around, Windows activated cleanly using the existing SLP key.

I suppose now your going to tell me that your bank isnt connected to the web, like the 2nd largest bank in america is, while connecting to my bank account information, to fix a password problem..

Remember: If you have a valid Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 key, you have one year to use that key to activate Windows 10 for free.

10:00 PM
@Psycogeek Did I mention that we don't like bank data going walkies? That includes digitally. No access to cloud storage.

OEM systems with SLP keys should have no trouble activating, but you might need a bit of time for Windows activation servers to accept it for Windows 10.

I could potentially multi-part it in WinZip and send it home as like a bajillion emails though...

@MichaelFrank wow that place is no fun, no fun at all. how can the bankers claim "we dont know where your money went" if they are so bloody secure.

@Psycogeek I work in IT, do you really think I know where any of the money is?

@MichaelFrank gads :-O i hope so, because it isnt in gold and it isnt in the paper, i just assumed it was in the computer still.

10:11 PM
Windows Updates downloading 92% complete.

@Psycogeek ^
I found it!

whew @L@ , I thought I was going to have to go clamming again.

10:35 PM
Updates installed; backlight control finally works.
Rebooting.
...and we have a BSOD, a failure in the NVIDIA driver.
VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE.
Seems to be a one-off, probably an issue that cropped up after installing the driver. Rebooted and there are no visible problems.
NVIDIA Optimus is now working as well.
Uh-oh. The on-board keyboard has stopped working.

Damn, I can only download Win10 from the same IP I used to visit the download page =/

Okay, it now works.
