12:00 AM
Much better.

@DragonLord Was gonna say that looks super lossy... but then I remembered I'm working on a VDI that isn't using 32-bit colour depth.

it looks good here.

Exported from PNG in the GIMP. JPEG quality 93 with 4:4:4 chroma (and not the lower-quality 4:2:2 more typically used) and floating-point DCT.

I suppose I should ask/answer the question. "Can I activate Windows 10 with a Windows 7/Windows 8.1 license" because I believe the key being picked up isn't the key I original used with the VM :$

GAH.
BSG just went on sale on a local gaming online retailer.
I'm going to have to rewatch the series.

12:13 AM
Everyone wants to know how to do a clean install, I told one user to skip the product key input prompts, and they indicated it couldn't be done.
So now I am interested if it can be done :$

how do you remove "education" off the education licence desktop, Get an education :-)
(Then move to pro)

yep...
The upgrade process generates a new license key :-)
I cloned this Windows 8.1 VM and upgraded the clone to Windows 10. I ended up with a key that is different from the original.

@Ramhound Bizarre behavior.

Not really...It exactly what I predicted 6 months ago :$

If I were to guess, the Windows 10 installation should make the Windows 8.1 instance non-genuine.

12:26 AM
nope....running both VMs
both are activated.

In all practical court possibilities , why can't I just use cracked win10 install it any way i want, because microsoft would have to show "damages" , and there is no loss of funds when it was given away free. And i have a couple of win7 licences.

Windows 10 isn't free though
An upgrade to Windows 10 is free for eligible users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Microsoft can easily show damages.

Its 'free' in the same way OS X upgrades are 'free'

Indeed

More precisely, you don't own your OS, and you basically get a licence for windows 10, for owning licencing windows 7.

12:30 AM
The free upgrade offer is indeed "free" in that Microsoft will recover the cost of Windows 10 development in other ways and once that offer is no longer offered it will cost money to upgrade.

And the real goal here is to drive early adoption

i am eligible for the free, so WTF method i am using it, without providing that method to others who may not be eligible, they would have a hard time collecting the nothing i cost them.

Technically, You never owned Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, EULA has for the most part remained unchanged.

For those who still have access, #Windows10 is now available on Dreamspark (formerly MSDNAA). Looks like you can get up to 8 product keys!

They also wouldn't go after you unless you had deep enough pockets.
Holly COW!
8 product keys?
Those bastards wouldn't even give me more than one Windows 8 key and then took it down

12:32 AM
@Ramhound or as an example to others for being a smart ass.

I'm guessing they'll change that eventually... for all the previous Windows editions you could only get 1 key and 1 version even though they offered like 10 different versions.

aww
I miss being a student ;p

Well I don't disagree. But historically unless you were a business and somebody reported your use of unlicensed Microsoft products Microsoft wouldn't even be aware of your use of unlicensed software.
They even had ( have?) a reward program for doing that

@JourneymanGeek Shhhh don't tell anybody, but I actually just graduated. I still have access for... probably only a couple weeks. Good timing.

12:34 AM
@Ramhound BSA gives a % of any settlement to anybody who tips them off

@nhinkle: I was a dual major, my school used to enable access for only the terms I was in school

@Ramhound ahh the disgrunteled employee get back at your boss perk :-)

Most of my current DIY systems have licences I got in school tho

Anyways...I found the fact it generated a new license key interesting

Thing I'm wondering is...

12:35 AM
now i just have to figure out wth happen to my vm file and why its 0 bytes...i already updated this vm once...<sigh>

if I imaged a windows 7 box, restored it to identical hardware, and upgraded...
blah
hmm

would it generated a different key each time?
doubtful

interesting test though.

I mean, if it failed, worst case scenario is I'd just wipe the system

12:36 AM
i want to know if the generated key can install Windows 10 :-)
because that is what everyone seems to be asking

and I do have two identical systems.... one of which runs XP and I'm due to upgrade the hard drive on my laptop to a SSD

"how do i do a clean install then activate windows"

@Ramhound: I am planning on testing that

They generated key theory?
or installing it with the license key that is generated?

Whether I can do a fresh install with that licence key

12:38 AM
I would very much like to know if that works @JourneymanGeek

The generated key theory would erm... against my EULA most likely and I'd never do such a thing. I'd be a bad dog. ;p

@Ramhound which is totally legal and allowed, and should be answered at SU 1 Time, and then referred back to. instead of the muck that were getting now.

do two tests if you don't mind. The first do a clean install and skip the product key input step, then see if it automatically, activates. Then do a second test and input the product key that was generated.

Hehehe... create VM with Windows 7 or 8. Take snapshot. Upgrade. Generate key. Save key. Rollback to snapshot. Repeat. Keys forever!

yeah. I need a SSD first tho

12:39 AM
@Psycogeek - What was your response to exactly?

In theory, this is what I'd try

@nhinkle - I plan to do that with this 8.1 VM i am updating AGAIn because the one VM i updated....the clone file parent is screwed up.
I think i cloned the same vm to many times
:$

image the disk on my old r61, which runs a retail windows 7. Upgrade to windows 10, image then try doing a fresh install on the r61, with an SSD
then restore the old image back into the original disk, test booting on my dad's system. Rinse and renew. Check the keys ;p

@Ramhound exactally what it points to when you hover on it. "how to do a legit clean install of win 10 and where to get the key and how to activate?" 1 size fits all single Q&A.

Would actually be completely legit, other than the fact that windows 7 is a retail install

12:44 AM
I actually already know but the author who wrote the article didn't even look to see if a new product key is activated. Hell he couldn't even figure out how to create a local user in Windows 10, good technical writer, just not as detailed orientated as i am ;-)

Is the general consensus that installing from the built-in upgrader maybe isn't the best route to take?

Your thoughts: Do the Windows 10 Task View and desktop compositing effects feel a bit like Compiz on Linux?

@nhinkle: I've never had it work reliably
reddit.com/r/windows/comments/3eyrre/… worked for me both systems I needed to upgrade so far
also, stuff may break. I had to do a workaround to get my backups working again

Sucks to be somebody with a slow internet connection lol.

@nhinkle - No; It is the best method

12:47 AM
@nhinkle you mean the built in Anticipation reminder and carrot on a stick with timer button :-) that never really had to actually work.

Well after just using the media tool to install it :-)

Psych

@Psycogeek @Ramhound it does seem to have downloaded... something. But I'll probably do a clean install anyhow.
It'll probably be a week before I can do that though, gotta make arrangements to move the data around.

@nhinkle: I have error 802blah

do't have a vm up ;-)

12:49 AM
also, iso download link only gives you ISOs on linux ;p

@JourneymanGeek o_O what?

@nhinkle: on windows it gives me the useless upgrade tool

Can you just spoof the UA or does it check lower than that somehow?

I donno
didn't try

Does anybody have a sense for what happens to version? If I have Windows 8.1 Pro installed, would I automatically get 10 Pro?

12:51 AM
That's what they've said.

uh huh

This Saturday we’ll be testing our new DR datacenter in Denver, Colorado. We will begin around 10AM EST (14:00 UTC). We expect the test itself to be approximately 15-30 minutes in duration once it begins and the total window for this op to be around 4 hours. We’ll begin prepping at the start which means actual user impact will begin some time after that. This test will consist of our enti

Brain fart..

12:54 AM
NT? Dude, it's 2015, we have Windows 10 now!

If anyone needs the english ISO, I'll try to upload it to my dedi this evening
I don't want the link up publicly, even if I have 'unlimited' data but ... yeah ;p

@nhinkle from reading there was actually a microsoft update , that put a GPO policy in that allowed an admin to control the upgrade from operation. because of problems caused by it.

man, having a fast connection is nice.

@JourneymanGeek If only we can afford it...

12:59 AM
@DragonLord: mine's practically a mere 20/20

( I get that on my home connection, HA! )

11 hours ago, by DragonLord
The college WiFi is 25 Mbps while my connection at home is <1 Mbps :(

nearly...

50 dollars would get me gigabit down

perhaps nt literally 7MB/sec but still

12:59 AM
@Ramhound: this is to a server elsewhere tho
and over sftp, which isn't exactly an efficient protocol

Ahh

I get about 60 Mbps down, but only 5 up. Pay $40/month. The next cheapest option is $30/month for... 5 Mbps down / 1 up. o_O

off to work now tho, and I need to move and make sure the file is accessible

Your thoughts: Do the Windows 10 Task View and desktop compositing effects feel a bit like Compiz on Linux?
@JourneymanGeek: your thoughts on the Xiaomi Pistons?
The bass is a bit strong for my taste, but the mids and highs are surprisingly clear.
(Just got my Piston IIIs today.)

Apparently I could get 250 Mbps down for $70/mo for the first 24 months. Comcast is running scared that google fiber will move in!

1:06 AM
@nhinkle The cheapest option here is $15 a month for 3/1.

1:23 AM
@nhinkle comcast dropped personal web pages recentally. while really difficult i was using it for some minor hosting and pic posting.

@Psycogeek A basic hosting service can be had for very little money.

@DragonLord I keep thinking I should pick up some of these cheap-but-good IEMs. But then I remember I have Triple.Fi 10 Pros and they never quite stack up. :P

FYI: Unlike in previous versions of Windows, Windows 10 does not have a dedicated help system. If you hit Windows+F1, you get sent to a Bing page directing you to use Cortana to get help in Windows 10.

Todays comcast prices California, for net only, it varies a lot if you get combo packs TV and landline phone

More information on getting help in Windows 10: windows.microsoft.com/en-US/Windows-10/…

1:36 AM
@DragonLord Honestly, the only time I see a Windows Help menu is when I accidentally hit F1.
Infact, I think the last time I purposefully opened it was to troll someone way back when holding it down for a few seconds would open an ungodly amount of Help screens.

I left help installed this time, I was positive that I would use it (win7) the 2 times i needed something , it did not go to that level. have not touched it since. I do not even know why it is still on the disk.

Hey, Windows 10 can fetch updates from other systems on a LAN

@DragonLord That's cool. Pity you can't force it to only get updates from local machines... But I imagine there's a GPO for that.

and a firewall :-)
Hey DragonLord how does the firewall interface look ? is it all dumbed down :-) , i mean user friendly now

I don't use Windows Firewall. I have a commercial security suite.

1:48 AM
@Psycogeek of course you'll still have the "advanced view"

One of the things about MS, is how things can be ssstreeeeetcched out endlessly, on 20 tabs, stuff that could be on 10 or even a single page of buttons (which would have that low res problem and could be a disaster).

Anonymous
just as I guess the Microsoft Management Console still has the same UI

@DragonLord I'm sad to see they're still insisting on shouting the settings title at you. :/

Anonymous
"making sure you're ready to install" for 20+ minutes... not cool

Sometimes there are teeney tiny boxes for requesters and buttons, that do not allow for expanding (network adapter properties?)
Like i would think that any of the most major annoyances , that have been around for 20 years would be simply addressed . When your already dreaming, just go to bed :-)
You know which non-expanding requester things i am talking about, now imagine them on a 4K screen . little postage stamps, that get more and more buttons and data in them every day.
Details tab, in the device manager, how they only allow ONE item to show at a time, when there is a whole page of data there? Fixed?
IE internet options Advanced, where there is lots of stuff packed in, but scrolling is required to read the text ? non-expanding Fixed?
In IE options security, when putting sites on the block lists , and having to scroll to even read them tiny local for huge data Fixed?
In windows 7 they broght in the "ribbon" interface in explorer windows, but I always have to have the menu shown also, because items are missing. then i cant turn off the ribbon Fixed?
This one i am not allowed to ask, because I was supposed to learn RegEx to search for files :-) When you type in the name of your favorite file stored on the computer (not in the path) using simple wildcards, will it search the actual files (not index because it isnt indexed yet) as easily as the (hated) dog did in XP.

2:14 AM
@Psycogeek hated dog?!
Who in their right mind could possibly hate that dog?!

the XP search dog (which could actually be changed)
@MichaelFrank Well bastards hated the dog , but who is telling MS what to do :-)
I use Ultra Search (meh) and Look Disk still because i only ever have 2 reasons to search and neither are used at once or are anything alike to me.
Search for where a file is, on 80% of the time Everyfreaking where . Only the file name nothing else

@allquixotic pagination kicks in if on a slow connnection

Search for specific text in Anything, which can include trying to find it in DLLs EXEs XMLs and config files . . . and docs :-)

It's in some page :D

with a cache holding the MFT file table stuff, and only searching for a file name With wild card, a program that does only that is multiple times faster than the windows search. I can even get through all my disks in the time it takes MS search to muddle through the wrong directory
which i have to admit , i never know how to set , and it takes me 3-4 clicks to set it to "all disks" which is not libraries.

2:53 AM
HA!
My "upgrade to windows 10" icon disappeared also :$
interesting

3:09 AM
There is a god...A Doctor Who god that is. Doctor Who Movie YEAH!
BOOOO....It just two episodes in 3D....

3:59 AM
The screen isn't turning off, any ideas?
Windows 10 on a Clevo P157SM. Ping me with any suggestions, gotta get to bed.

@DragonLord: I don't think the upgrade actually pulls over drivers
Reinstall zee drivers
It also dosen't pull over some things which have deeper hooks.

Download at 80% wheeee

windows 10?

yep

I think I'm going to go slow on the rest of the updates ;p
I don't have it that well documented, and I'll have a few recurring issues

Bob
4:19 AM
There we go, got the new powerboard, and the new HDD
Next step: make backup
actually, no
next step: clear out desk space so the HDD fits -_-

lol
powerboard?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Powerboard.
@JourneymanGeek What do you call them? o.O
Heh, I just found my Windows 8 headphones from a couple years ago (promo)
Dammit, should've gone to the stalls on Tuesday... they might've had more freebies

I quite literally have no idea what a powerboard is ;p
OH
We call it a multi socket or power strip

We call it multi pin :D

Windows 10 install is happening now on my lappy
I just burned an ISO to a BD-R I had laying around

4:31 AM

List Price: $159.99
Price: $20.96
what?
there are TONS of Japanese imports of really cheap blu-ray discs on amazon

4:54 AM
@allquixotic: The issue I'm having now is I need to fix up my backup software on each one, I don't trust drivers to be updated correctly... etc etc
and I don't want to rush this
also, overkill ;p

sob I don't have a pendrive
Can't reinstall grub after Windows 10 install

@allquixotic: chances are for AMD or nvidia, you'll need to reinstall the video driver from scratch. Not sure about intel. Someone on the other comms room mentioned issues with AMD.
@HackToHell boo.
I have.... 4-5
and one on my keychain which has USB OTG ;p

I had all of mine in a bag and then proceeded to loose it
Now I have my SD cards scattered throughout the house

Wait, my laptop has a DVD drive

5:00 AM
.....
If anyone here needs the windows english 10 iso, let me know
Its uploaded ;p

@JourneymanGeek can't you just download it using the media utility?
that's what I did

nope
something happened

Is the ISO download from the download utility proper ?
I used it cause it's downloading an esd and it's usually smalller

anyone know of a raspi media center that supports youtube/netflix?

5:27 AM
@HackToHell seems like it
It put a Windows.iso in my documents folder, and I burned it to a Bluray Recordable, and then told it to upgrade my laptop, and it just finished booting to desktop, everything is perfect

@allquixotic yay then

Bob
5TB HDD is much louder than the other ones o.O
Hmm
I still have > 10 GB of video files from that screencap/encode test for @OliverSalzburg o.O

5:46 AM
The Opertons in Azure are faster than my laptop's CPU o_0

Bob
@HackToHell Why is that surprising?

A query is faster in my laptop than in there, and I thought the bottleneck was the CPU

Bob
@allquixotic ok, found one situation where my i7-2600 is a bottleneck :P
(compressing ~1.8 TB with LZMA2)

6:01 AM
@Bob heh

@HackToHell: Direct ISO from MS

@Bob :O

Bob
@allquixotic Eh, I dialed it back to 'fastest' (vs 'normal') since it's probably 80-90% video. Also capped it at 4 cores so I can hopefully do other things effectively.
Seems like the bottleneck for the current section is actually NTFS metadata...
(It's going through a large number of small files at the moment)

I'll see if I can shove the international one too

@Bob NTFS metadata + any active scanners (Windows Defender...?) is pretty brutal, yeah
way slower than the next slowest Linux FS
even ntfs-3g on Linux is way faster than NTFS on Windows (but to be fair, it ignores permissions)
Anyway, in case someone here asks about the compatibility of the ThinkPad T530 with Windows 10, or wonders about the Nvidia NVS 5400M or the Intel HD 4000 graphics, both of those graphics chips have drivers from mid-July 2015 out of the box on Win10, so yeah, that's gonna be really recent and well-supported.
In short, it's ideally suited for a Win10 upgrade.

6:12 AM
Okay, time to freshly reinstall Windows 7 to prepare for Windows 10

Bob
I'm at least 3 days off from attempting anything to do with Win10 on the desktop
(that's the 7-zip ETA)
then after that I need to do a proper backup
then I can think about it
though, I'd prefer to get a proper SSD and just do a clean install on there...
Hm. 850 EVO prices are tempting.

@Bob if you don't have an SSD yet, I strongly recommend getting one

Bob
@NateKerkhofs All I can say is: meh
(I have something like 20 TB of storage now.)

Before I got mine, Windows booted in more than 5 minutes
now, it boots in 5 seconds

Bob
Got a 120 GB Intel SSD acting as cache and for a pagefile.
@NateKerkhofs Honestly? I couldn't care less about Windows startup time.
I reboot maybe once every month, if that.
It spends ~1min just getting through the RAID startup, BIOS startup, and other pre-boot stuff.
An SSD won't help at all for most of it.
Sticking the OS on a SSD would be a (very expensive) curiosity more than anything else.
I also recently expanded to 24 GB of RAM - that's enough that I pretty much never have to worry about access speed of OS components any more.
Anything important would be cached.
(I've also run out of 3.5" bays, but plenty of 5.25" bays I could stick a caddy in.)
@allquixotic I'd be shocked if Windows 10 didn't support all Intel on-die iGPUs perfectly out of the box.
There's only something like 10 types, total, which would be trivial to test.
Trivial relative to a major OS release anyway.

6:32 AM
ah crap, looks like I got the wrong windows installation DVD installed
instead of the OEM version, I got the non-OEM version
really weird, since last time, it worked
Looks like I'll have to call Microsoft to fix it
Does Microsoft still help people to activate their non-OEM Windows 7 with an OEM license key?

6:46 AM
oh, NOW I get it
this is a Windows 7 professional DVD...

7:17 AM
@Bob Worst time to do a proper backup is after you need it ;p

superuser.com/questions/946348/… I cant be positive, but I think this archaic (before the storm) set of answers is still a definitive , and accurate for the question of fresh drive unit, or "clean install" information?? I was going to link to new "clean install" questions. Verify ?
Example Q this link would be used for superuser.com/questions/947342/…
Summary "you can fresh install, but to date all information says you MUST upgrade FIRST" I assume to get the key. @ramhound too

Bob
Hmmmm can't load chat on the home connection...weird
oh it's back
that was odd

@Bob: gremlins.
;p
heh. Non techie friend of mine reported her windows 7 box upgraded itself without a hitch ._.
I wonder if its a windows 8.1 thing

7:39 AM
yaaaaay I have the ISO \m/
Upgrade time this evening

have fun
I'll do my laptop this weekend I think

Okay, back from Breakfast
Now I just need to burn this universal Windows 7 install DVD
and then I can install my Home Premium Windows 7
And then I can install Windows 10

@NateKerkhofs it will be interesting to know what is up with this reserve partition you are fully aware of.

@Psycogeek It was a really weird situation

@Psycogeek: That'll be interesting for small devices. My netbook actually stores system files, read-only in the recovery partition

7:45 AM
I have already reinstalled Windows 7 once, while wiping the partition that was labeled "system reserved (E:)" on my second drive
And now, I'm going to install Windows 7 a second time to get my CD key working properly
Because the installation media I currently have was a Pro edition, but my key is for home premium
so I had to use the eicfgremoveutility to fix that

@NateKerkhofs well that sounds all "standard" :-( like trying to defeat the edition classification.

@Psycogeek Well, I have to
I wanted to do a fresh Windows installation
so I have to make sure it works
Funny thing is, last time, I had the exact same issue
2 years ago
Back then, I took my bike to the store I bought it from to get a new ISO to install it with.
Okay, Windows is installing now for the second time

One guy in the comments today said (paraphrased) screw this stuff, i am just going to buy a real whole dvd of the OS $200 and be done with it, after all i will be using it for years, and do not mind paying.
surprisingly being a cheapskate that I am, I will be doing the same thing, once i can confirm a locked down good quality final fixed OS . totally jumping on it if in 6mo they releace a 10.1 or whatever words they would have for it.

for the key @Psycogeek?

8:00 AM
@djsmiley2k yes for the key, and for a glass mastered DVD of the OS i will be using (if that even exists).

Is the ISO's not working or something|?

@djsmiley2k: the ISO seems to work for most people. Quite a lot of folk have trouble with updating through windows update, myself included

so from win 7/8 to win 10 is problematic?

@djsmiley2k I only am following what i read , and reading as much of it as i can, I will not be making the move to win 10 actual until it is all perfected to my satisfaction.

@Psycogeek yeah, fair enough - I'm just trying to judge if I can give my wifes laptop the much needed hdd upgrade it needs (to ssd)

8:03 AM
@djsmiley2k: for me, the update failed. I had to blow away the software downloads folder, and download it again

Okay, now my Wireless receiver drivers

@djsmiley2k oh for the clean installing ? upgrade a laptop to a SSD , excellent idea, even better than for a desktop, because mobile devices and 5000-7000 rpm spinning platters being bumped was never the best idea :-)

indeed lol
But if I do it, i want to go directly to win10.
So does the win10 iso jsut accept a win7 key?

@djsmiley2k for the doing an upgrade at the same time , there would be Nothing ever with any sort of issue with that if one thing is true. You have a backup of the system and setup you could retract to if you had to.

phew, windows ghas been activated

8:09 AM
@Psycogeek yup i'll keep the old disk safe ;)
I'm just wondering how the key thing works...
/me will use belarc to get the win key from the laptop, but that's a win7 key.

@djsmiley2k heh, apparently the first install needs to be a upgrade

Now I need to spend 2 hours installing Windows Update

Do I need a seperate win10 key?
@JourneymanGeek urgh ok

After that you are supposed to be able to clean install somehow

or can I just install Windows 10 directly?
oh, right, I probably need the right KBs

8:10 AM
@NateKerkhofs I guess that answers your question too lol
1 min ago, by Journeyman Geek
@djsmiley2k heh, apparently the first install needs to be a upgrade

@djsmiley2k superuser.com/questions/946348/… no an upgrade must be performed first, but i was trying to get someone to confirm that as a more factual statement. And i do believe there will be some sort of way to do it, be it by MSessity or by hook or by crook.

well then, I'll extract the key, try and figure out to reinstall win7 without the instalation media
upgrade, wipe, install clean lol

@NateKerkhofs I would be reluctant to install updates, because of the messes i have seen created behind the scenes, but i believe there is at least 1 pre-requisite updates.

Well, since I can't install just a single update, I'll have to install all of them
204 updates to install, about 1 GB in total

I might mess around a bit when I have time
and more hardware ;p

8:40 AM
what.
It looks like you've reached your device limit for installing apps and games from the Store on your Windows 10 device. If you want to install apps and games from the Store on another Windows 10 device, remove a device from the device list.
I just got that through an email

8:53 AM
btw can I mount an ISO and simply run 10 setup off it?

@NateKerkhofs Oh yea , that happens to me at google play too. You bought to much software for your phone, please buy a new phone LOL.
