1:00 PM
I think it just needs a reboot
Meanwhil, I'll just grab the installer iso

Windows 10 installation was a hell of a ride for me.

on the bright side
I have a linux box I am not touching ;p

Reinstall GWX and preparation update ... NOPE.
sfc and restorehealth magic ... NOPE.

Its trying to do something and failing

Enable automatic updates ... OH.
Force it /updatenow wise ... NOPE.
Next morning ... OH YEAH.
Windows update to 10 ... NOPE.
Failed initializing some directory ... NOPE.
>_<
Then I ended up turning it into an ISO and put that on USB.

1:11 PM
right now my PC is non responsive

Install it from there ... PROGRESS.
Then it points out incompatible software NOT in my software list. ... NOPE.

@TomWijsman That's how I am going to do it
@TomWijsman whaaat
How do I check before update ?

Manual file and registry removal to get that piece of software gone ... LIKE A BOSS.
Finally installs ... OHYEAH!
@HackToHell Yeah, I figured out that I had to stay away from Windows Update and go towards the ISO method.
@HackToHell Just run the setup, it won't actually change your actual Windows until somewhere after you get that incompatible software list.

Windows Update never works for me :(

oh wow, it's Windows 10 launch day, so suddenly RA chat is the place to be :)
the app thingy never told me it was ready to install Windows 10, so I figured whatever

1:13 PM
All it really does is create some $... folders in your C:\ (like with Windows Update) and also the temporary directories as we know them.
@allquixotic: Somehow the least comfortable way to install Windows 10 feels like the most foolproof way to do it. :D

@TomWijsman least comfortable? as in, burn it to a DVD and do a clean install?
@Bob @TomWijsman At this point, considering how terrible the upgrade experience has been for most people, I'm probably just going to wait until the weekend (at the earliest) to see if MSFT has any patches/fixes in the first couple days for upgrade issues.

@allquixotic 1) Find some Microsoft Windows 10 downloader link somewhere in the comments of a Reddit thread. 2) Download it. 3) Freeze the process after it has the ESD file. 4) Turn that ESD file into an ISO file with some convertor you find on GitHub. 5) Burn that ISO on USB. 6) Run the setup from USB (in your booted Windows). 7) Remove files and registry entries for software not in your software list. 8) It finally manages to install.

@TomWijsman Sounds about right :D

Because Windows Update and the Downloader itself fail miserably it only really works for me if you just launch it in its DVD / USB format.

there's a direct link to the ISO

1:19 PM
@TomWijsman how's windows 10? is it better than windows 8.1?

Now you can figure out how much fun I'll have the coming days being a PC technician.
@jane The first ironic thing I found somewhere in the new control panel is a way to downgrade back to 8.1 within a month only.
It first looked a bit like fifty windows of grey, until I found out there's a Windows 10 blue theme that looks way better.
No Cortona for Belgium; so, meh...
Other than that it looks good for me so I won't be bothered by it.
I still have to get a little bit used to the changes in Windows Explorer.
And I'm not sure if I'll get myself converted to the Edge browser, probably will experiment with that later.

That's funny, I was thinking of upgrading as well, but to hear that there's a downgrade button, I think it's better to stay in windows 8.1 for a while. lols.

It's nice that they provide it.

If you choose poorly, you’re in for a heap of trouble.

If I somehow get bored in two weeks, it comes in handy.

1:22 PM
and windows 8.1 is still kinda shitty, I still prefer windows 7 but I'm too lazy to reinstall everything.. lols

"Gabriel Aul, confirmed via Twitter that those who prefer to perform a fresh install of Windows 10 instead of working with an upgraded version can do so at any point, , , , once they have received a license via the free upgrade initiative." And why cant they just get that via some Microsoft upgrade Licence site ?

Huy
Did anyone find a fix to the "something happened" error using the media creation tool yet?

Huy
Can you tell me? :P

1:26 PM
trying the nuke the temp folder and try again method
oh
Fix? no

Huy
Been trying to install Win10 for the previous 7 hours.

you can download the ISO I guess?
Link's pinned

Huy
I tried that several times too, without any success. :(

@JourneymanGeek The error he gets is from the tool in that link.

There's no tool

1:27 PM
@JourneymanGeek I'd advise not wasting time on that.

there's an ISO

Huy
The size of the downloaded update seemed to become larger by ~2GB after every attempt.

Trying again, this time on a much faster Internet connection at my college campus.

@JourneymanGeek microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 --> "Download Tool Now (32/64-bit version)" buttons
The link forwards me to the above page; if you get something different, it's probably region based.

Look closely at the link

Huy
1:28 PM
Yes, I can also only download the two versions of the tool, following that link.

With the ISO at the end?

Huy
Yes.

The ISO is probably for a specific region in the USA; if we visit it, we get a tool to download our copy for our region / language / version / whatever...

hello

0_0
IT GAVE ME AN ISO IN LINUX

1:29 PM
@Huy At what point do you get that error?

@TomWijsman: happens as soon as you run it

It doesn't even download anything?

How's that even possible. :-/

Damn it MS. This is like waving cheese in front of a wauzer on antibiotics.

1:31 PM
@Huy: @JourneymanGeek: You might be able to use the ESD file you get from Windows Update to create an ISO.

Huy
@TomWijsman: If I use the media creation tool I have two options: 1) upgrade PC, 2) use an external device (USB/DVD). When I choose 1, I get that error immediately. When I choose 2 and my USB device, it downloads to 100%, then does two more steps and then in the middle of it stops and the error comes up.

I have the english language ISO downloaded

Oh ok, Huy only then.

@TomWijsman: I have an iso

Hey I guess not enough people would have asked this today so... Can I use my windows 8.1 key to install windows 10 in a VM from the direct ISO?

1:32 PM
Is it perfectly ordinary to run SODIMM PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600) at DDR3-1333 (PC3-10666) speeds? Can pretty much any decent stick of RAM clock down from 1600 to 1333?

@AwalGarg Shouldn't take long to just try it. But you might be able to install 8.1 in the VM first, then run an upgrade to 10 straight away.

(running a Sandy Bridge i5 and thinking of upgrading to 2 x 8 GiB sticks, but CPU only supports 1333 MHz DDR3)

@TomWijsman I live in India and bandwidth sucks here, so downloading the iso will take a few internet years. I can either upgrade, or download an iso.

@Huy wow that is a seriously stupid way to have a media creation tool work (ny microsoft).

Huy
1:35 PM
I actually find the whole upgrade process really annoying.

@Huy Uhm, no, you can use some ISO mounting software as an alternative.
@Huy Imagine me spending 1 hour yesterday evening, then another 2 hours this morning.

Huy
@TomWijsman: I'd need an ISO first, which I can't get on the starred link.

which language version?

Huy
German.

@Huy The tool gives you an ESD file somewhere in a C:\$WINDOWS.WS folder. You can turn that ESD file into an ISO file with some tool you can find online.

Huy
1:36 PM
@TomWijsman: Actually, when I'd start the tool, the Windows.BT and .WS folders would decrease in size immediately.
(the media creation tool by Microsoft)
How do I know whether the Windows.BT/.WS folders are ready already? What size should they have?

(Converting the file is not a legit Microsoft way to do it, but the only way I managed to eventually do the upgrade to obtain a legit Windows. >_<)
@Huy Because it downloads it again when you run it again.
.BT is used for Windows Update and for the actual installation. .WS is used for anything the Tool does.
@Huy After you have the ESD file it will unpack it into a Windows folder (which will look somewhat like the contents of a Windows installation medium)
I basically froze the process at that point such that I could convert ESD to ISO instead of unpacking it.
Because somehow the unpacked version that the tool runs itself afterwards is broken.

Now its frozen on 'preparing for installation'
Swell

And through an ISO it works. Strange, but the reality for me.
@JourneymanGeek Sounds good...

damnitttttttttttt someone has hash browns from McDonalds in here and it's making me hungry... I'm trying to diet here and I smell golden brown fried potato.. -_- it calls to me

Installation took a while for me.

1:40 PM
lol

Huy
I have an Install.esd roughly 2.65GB large. Should that already be the complete file?

> It looks like you're trying to diet here and you smell golden brown fried potato.

Would you like help?

Yes, please!No, thanks.

@Huy Yes, that sounds about right.

looks like it started

Huy
@TomWijsman: Getting an ISO using that ESD, will I still be able to only upgrade and not fresh install?

1:41 PM
@allquixotic, please bring the chatbot back online.

@Huy Yes.

Huy
@TomWijsman: Can you tell me which tool you used?

@Huy Doing it the sophisticated way I did my Windows 10 desktop and user folder and games and stuff look and work the same they did on Windows 8.1.

Huy
@TomWijsman: What do you mean by that?

1:43 PM
Just drag the .ESD file on top of the .BAT file and follow along (pick option 1).
@Huy I mean that I didn't lose anything in the process.
It's not a clean install, it's an effective upgrade where you get to keep everything you had on Windows 8.1.

@allquixotic heh.stay strong!

@DragonLord I don't really have the time to look into what's wrong with it right now. I can start it, but it won't show up in the room. I think they changed the authentication stuff and it broke my Selenium code.
I can look into running it with Zirak's node script though (ugh)

yay!
The reddit thing worked
@allquixotic: if you need the english iso let me know

@JourneymanGeek Saw some page on reddit where all the different ISO files were linked to, not sure whether I could find that back. But yes, there are straight link.

gonna need to merge Zirak's codebase into mine

1:47 PM
Main Windows 10 image downloaded.

@Huy: In the event that you use Journeyman's link, please verify whether you have the normal or the pro version of your current OS.

The college WiFi is 25 Mbps while my connection at home is <1 Mbps :(

@TomWijsman: that link gives me an Installer in windows and an ISO in linux

@JourneymanGeek :P at work I'm probably gonna uninstall and delete all personal stuff from the main Windows OS and run everything in a Windows 10 VM

Huy
@TomWijsman: Do I need to extract the ISO to a USB or just to my PC ?

1:48 PM
already have VMware installed, just didn't really have enough RAM to do it comfortably

Oh, by the way, talking about downloads, I must've downloaded Windows 10 at least 10 times with my attempts to get things to work. 8-)

once I get 16 GiB I'll be able to do it comfortably

@TomWijsman You are a monster. You've downloaded something 10 times that other people are still waiting for the first time of.
Damn northern Europeans and their ridiculous internet connections

@Huy I used Windows DVD/USB Download Tool to put it on USB. Any ISO to USB tool suffices, really.

1:49 PM
@allquixotic: ._.

Alternative you could mount the ISO using some kind of virtual drive tool.

Huy
That's what I thought. Let's see if this works.

took me about 5 minutes to download

@allquixotic The problem is how internet works in the US. The FCC is trying to fix it but it's an uphill fight against ISPs.

@JourneymanGeek It was on my system before I noticed it started to download. :S

1:50 PM
Infrastructure is owned by and can be exclusively used by one ISP.

@allquixotic Yeah, in Steam it peaks around 19 MB/s. :D It's a server connection though. :S

as many people that are downloading and re-downloading the thing, why isnt Microsoft servers crippled by now?

Huy
@TomWijsman: I got an ISO using your ESD decrypter... It's called Windows10_Pro_InsiderPreview__de_10240.iso. WTF?

@Psycogeek The CDNs are already overworked.

@Huy Don't mind the InsiderPreview. 10240 is the final build. It's just a thing that's in the tool.

Huy
1:51 PM
Are you sure?
Lots like this: "is 10240 the final build". No. It's a near-final build that's on new PCs, but we've done lots of fixes since then.

The Windows 10 download includes both the main system image and several key updates to fix bugs.

Download seems to be done on my end. Hang on...
System seems to be preparing for installation.

@Huy It's just a file name given by the converter. The ESD it comes from is RTM.

ok I'm going to do a Zirak->allquixotic merge for SO-ChatBot
then try to deploy it with his node script
that SHOULD fix the issues

1:54 PM
!!no

..........
it's not up yet. :P

lol

Dism Servicing Host Process and Modern Setup Host are busy preparing the completed download for installation.

Huy
Ok, let's see if this works. Got it on my USB device.

@Huy: If you want to confirm, ask someone here for the header of his systeminfo output.

1:57 PM
Rebooting the Dragon.

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
OS Version: 10.0.10240 N/A Build 10240

@JourneymanGeek @DragonLord @TomWijsman Do any of you think it would be a good idea to write and maintain a GitHub Gist and pin it on the starwall with a sort of "FAQ" about the day-zero Windows 10 upgrade process?
I don't have the knowledge yet since I haven't upgraded personally, but there's a lot of info in the chat scattered in here so far

@allquixotic Maybe, depends on how soon they'll fix the upgrade issues.

maybe we can also include links to third-party sites that have useful info

Full screen games ALT+TAB to Windows and back is lightning fast now.

2:00 PM
@TomWijsman new WDDM layer helped, I guess?
I hope the hell that works on AMD and not just Nvidia
that will make crossfire awesome again

NVIDIA here, so no idea about AMD.

(provided the games I play actually work with crossfire)

I just checked again, it simply exists after 2 seconds or so with the message "Something happened." (in Dutch). It says this twice actually. — Jeroen Bollen 3 mins ago

Several drivers were installed. Can't install Windows 10 just yet. Not sure what's going on.

Isn't it always true at any given instant, within any span of time, until the ultimate heat-death of the universe, that "something happened"?

2:02 PM
global something happened even

also after the heat death? Since we will still have virtual particals popping in and out of existence.

@Hennes hadrons?

No, more basic iirc
Somebody copied a press release ?

@TomWijsman if it doesn't help with AMD, I may have to get that 980 Ti after all >_>

Gotta love the light blue lines below the icons on the start bar, looks much more modern like this.

2:04 PM
NOW I WANNA UPGRADE D:

Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. This computer is currently scheduled to install these updates on ‎Wednesday, ‎July ‎29, ‎2015 at 10:12 AM:
- Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro
Event logs. Just gotta wait a few minutes.
I'm going home now.
Download is complete and Windows 10 is ready to be installed.

lol
@allquixotic maybe
and yes

maybe what? I need a reply!

it literally says something happened
having a collected set of information is nice

Matt Sherman on July 29, 2015
I was asked this question twice in the past week, by colleagues who work with our clients. It’s a great question…

holy god, VS2015 installs tons of dependencies

@DragonLord uhh yea but didnt you say that before too ?

@allquixotic Yeah, a screen full off software in the software list. :S
@DragonLord You should get the ISO or ESD mate, don't trust Windows Update.
@allquixotic Yes, what!

.
-ahh shit
video card drives are FUBAR

2:21 PM
Networking seems down too

That is undoubtedly the improved error clarification that is in windows 10, if you could hear "Cortana" it would explain exactally what is wrong , and how to correct it :-)

rebooted and networking is back up

Just say "Windows" WTF happend , into the microphone :-)

Huy
@TomWijsman: Worked. Thanks!
@TomWijsman: Can't seem to activate Windows though, did it automatically activate for you or anything I need to do?
Says the license wasn't found or is not valid, I used a dreamspark version of Win8.

@Huy It reads "Windows is activated."
Make sure all the automatic services are started. Then refresh the system page of the control panel.
If you don't suceed in that, you might need to look up some slmgr.vbs tricks to get the activation going manually.
@Huy: But hmm, not sure if Dreamspark versions of Windows 8 are valid for an upgrade.

Huy
2:33 PM
@TomWijsman: They should be.

@Huy Do you know whether it falls under OEM, Retail, VLK, ...?

they are
Mine's dreamspark, worked fine

> Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80240020: Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

@DragonLord: I had that

17 mins ago, by Tom Wijsman
@DragonLord You should get the ISO or ESD mate, don't trust Windows Update.

@DragonLord You might be able to find the ESD in the \Windows.BT folder
(Note that Journeyman's advice redownloads it, if your connection allows it.)

Guess what? That worked.
Empty the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder. Don't delete the Download folder proper, just the contents.

@DragonLord: Thats PRECISELY what my reddit link said

PSA: If your system downloads Windows 10 but fails to install it with error 0x80240020, empty the contents of (but do not the delete) the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, then run` wuauclt.exe /updatenow` in an elevated command prompt.

@DragonLord Or just give up.

Reservation not working? 80240020 your unlucky number? Get an ISO https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

Oh, by the way, talking about downloads, I must've downloaded Windows 10 at least 10 times with my attempts to get things to work. 8-)
Hmm, can't adjust icons on my task bar.

2:43 PM
Downloading again. It'll be a long wait.

Can't right click to unpin them, how does this work?

Looks like it'll work this time.

@DragonLord Looked like it worked 10 times... nope. :D

Huy
@TomWijsman: I can but it lags a bit.

now you all broke steam too

Huy
2:48 PM
@TomWijsman: Is there a way to get the start menu to open on my secondary screen when focus is currently on my secondary screen? It seems to open always on my primary screen, despite focus.

guess someone has thier system up and running downloading thier 250gig of games again.

@Huy Dunno, working on one screen now. Try right clicking the task bar and then properties.

heh
Same issue on my laptop
GG MS

Guessing if there would be a setting it would be in a similar location as Windows 8(.1).
Gonna reboot to see if that fixes the right click issue.
Probably a first boot has some first boot issues if you know what I mean... ^_^

Q: Can't install nvidia driver on windows 10

Peter LenkefiI've installed Windows 10. Then I tried to install the driver for my nvidia card (gtx 750) but it failed. At first restart the resolution became really high (1920x1080) so it seemed like the driver was installed successfully. Then suddenly black screen. I've restarted the computer and it went bac...

Sure it is a longstanding problem, but some people on the web are suggesting that the win10 updates will conflict with the manufactures driver and set it back to the windows update one.
Plus some noise about a failure due to dueling drivers

3:18 PM
I'm trying to run the Windows 10 update tool. I select "update this computer now" and then I get "something happened"

@NateKerkhofs please read up in chat

@NateKerkhofs what i am getting so far is it is better to snag the ISO , and do an "in Place Upgrade" this will still do the upgrade thing providing a key.
Generally "in place upgrade" methods are also a type of lapped install, or repair install kind of thing where you do not lose your user data and layout. although anyone messing with it who has not already secured thier user data and other software licencing , and a clone of thier working system, is basically nuts anyways

I can apparently choose 2 versions of Windows Home: Windows 10 Home N and Windows 10 Home without N

This time around, I'm at my local coffeehouse
Seems to be working now, but it'll still take a while
The WiFi is a bit slower here at 15 Mbps
I can't spend too much time on the streets due to a heat wave lasting several days

how do I actually get around this
@DragonLord yea I don't come on chat.se much, didn't realize all of my so rep carried over

Just download an ISO throug the MediaCreationTool, burn it to a DVD, and use that

@DragonLord tried that
I have the $WINDOWS~BT folder or w/e
but no network traffic to indicate I'm getting a download
@NateKerkhofs I don't have a w10 key.. I was trying to see if "upgrade this PC" would not ask for one
I am migrating from w7

You don't need a W10 key

really?
okay I'll try that then

the ISO detects that you got a legal W7 installed and does an inplace upgrade

3:50 PM
someone in the js room said I did need one

it links a new key to your motherboard during the upgrade, provided you got a legal W7 installation

Q: What are the "N" versions of Windows 8?

Gustavo GondimMicrosoft just released the final Windows 8 versions for MSDN members, before its consumer release in october. Anyway, I am a MSDN member. Today I went to see my downloads page and I found a list of the new versions to be downloaded. Windows 8 Windows 8 N Windows 8 Pro Windows 8 Pro N Windows ...

pro N is a special version for Windows 7 N versions

nvm, I assume it is the same

it's not, actually

3:52 PM
okay, then I'm going to help vamp :P I (for some strange reason) have windows 7 home premium on my work pc (yea yea)
so windows 10 home or windows 10 home N?

use Windows 10 Home (not N)

kk, ty

N is if your version is already N

Woo! network traffic !
lol

which means you got a special version without any Windows Media player or similar stuff

3:54 PM
very slow, but it is downloading
thankyou very much, I'll likely be back when it is finished and I run into problems :D
I owe you 5 JavaScripts

Failed with 0x80240FFF. Not sure what's going on.

Ran the linked troubleshooter. Will try to install Windows 10 again.
Troubleshooter says "service registration is missing or corrupt"
...which it fixed.
Trying again.
This is stupid. It needs to download the whole thing again.
