@BenN I'm outputting a custom psobject to a CSV with Powershell, do you know how to set the order of the columns once it's output?
Ahh, nevermind. Figured it out!

Oh, neat. How'd you do it?
I was tinkering with PSCustomObjects but not getting the effect you wanted

I had my object defined as $output = new-object psobject -property = @{...}
I ended up switching it to $output = [ordered]@{...}
and then used New-Object psobject -property $output | Export-Csv ...

Ah, very good

I had a request to "review the access on the shared folder drive"
Now I need to figure out how to intelligently work around long file names. :(

Ow. Does Windows 10's new ability to handle those work with PowerShell? I haven't checked that

12:32 AM
Not sure, we're still on Windows 7 here. :(

If the longness is mostly due to long individual path components (like My exceedingly important documents for January 2017) instead of super deeply nested folders, you could do some P/Invoke to find the short name of files and use those

I think most of the long paths are just deeeeeeeeply nested.

Oof, not sure what to do about that other than horrible symlink shenanigans

Robocopy can handle the long paths.... but I'm not 100% sure on how to integrate it.
I think you can use it to generate a list of folders, then get the ACLs from the list individually. Although that sounds extremely slow.

WMI might be able to do it, but that would also be incredibly slow
At least it would be more managed than trying to parse robocopy

12:54 AM
So, uh, I just found that there isn't a statistically significant difference in vote positivity patterns on questions from new Informed users and new un-Informed users
I was about to crow on meta about how people would do so much better if they read the tour, but then I got hit with statistics!

lol
@BenN That's interesting

This is only on SU questions this week from users with <=100 rep since I was addressing that one meta question about voting on new users' questions
It's probably worth investigating in a broader area too

lol. I was thinking about the same question when you were talking about it

Man, I even used a one-sided test, so it assumed that the difference would be good, but p > 0.23!

I donno tho, tour's part of it
One thing I find is its useful to get a 'broader' idea of a community
but that's a very hard thing to quantify

12:58 AM
Maybe I should look at closure instead
But then people could accuse me of p-hacking if I check too many things :p

that would be a thing.
@BenN or just have seperate set of statistics and analyse them
I do think there would be a lot of closure/deletions of first posts
hm. tt-rss moved their forums to discourse.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that seems to be the thing to do these days :P
on one hand, it's smooth
on the other, I kinda miss all the vb/phpbb/etc stuff :P

What stuff specifically? ;p

Bob
though it's been many years since I've been a proper forum participant... I blame SE for that :P
@JourneymanGeek just the general themes, some of the more fun plugins...

I love the UI and concept. I dislike aspects of the mechanics of it (docker ;p)
and yeah, you can probably work out how to run it sans docker but...

Bob
1:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek docker would probably also break deployment within lxd on debian :(

@Bob yeah
(I know, you could maybe reverse engineer installing it or something..)
oooh

Bob
"Why do you only officially support Docker?

Hosting Rails applications is complicated."
meanwhile, gitlab doesit just fine...
granted, they have their own monitoring system, but it doesn't introduce kernel dependencies like docker does

1:29 AM
So I figured out Mail Merge today. That was fun.

Bob
lol
welcome to 2004? :P

My job has never required me to use Word very often.

@Bob I think its more "we don't want to talk the average person through installing it"

Bob
@JourneymanGeek but... gitlab is literally packagemanager install package
discourse is just making excuses
their real reason is "we're too lazy to package it properly"

@Bob there's probably no reason someone couldn't repackage discourse that way ;p
probably

Bob
1:33 AM
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
@allquixotic ... you know that network issue after kexec?
... ... ...
scaleway kernel: eth0, yup
ubuntu kernel: eth0? nah. let's call it ens2!
so, basically, you were right :P

Bob
funny how they call it "Predictable Network Interface Names"
predictable my floof
2
> It was a lot easier to remember and type eth0 than, and I swear this is the actual name it gave, enP2p32s15f0.
lol

@Bob wat
That's not real, right??

1:51 AM
that's mostly standard now ._.

2:09 AM
hm. I'm having a fun little problem
One of my screens gets kinda "unfocused" randomly.

Apply some Percussive Maintenance.

Switching off the screen causes odd crashing of my system (it turns crash blue - top of the remaining screen turns solid, bottom half flickers)
screenshots look fine.
rebooting the pc fixes it
Not even sure where to start. Almost feels like its a mix of cleartype and driver issues

Bob
@JourneymanGeek crossover? :P

Bob
> Great repository names are short and memorable. Need inspiration? How about fuzzy-giggle.
...sure, lemme just start my fuzzy-giggle project

@Bob yes
dosen't feel like a monitor issue tho
since the PC crashes.
(expect a question on this soon, once I get moar data. It seems mostly random and on first start)
@GypsySpellweaver heh. WRT the MSE post - I use a new window + middle mouse button for new tabs when dealing with rabbit holes

Bob
2:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek I use my nose ;)

@JourneymanGeek I use shift + click for new tabs and ctrl + w to close tabs. I just seem to almost always forget the first-half on embedded images, yet remember the second half. :( Ends up closing the tab when I should have done "back" instead.
FireFox came to my rescue though. Now I can do History ➱ Recently closed tabs. Saves my bacon on the regular.

Bob
3:14 AM
@GypsySpellweaver Ctrl + Shift + T to reopen last closed tab.
Ctrl + Shift + N to reopen last closed window.
IIRC it saves 10 tabs and 3 windows by default.
ugh
@JourneymanGeek Ubuntu + systemd + networking = wtf is going on

lol
@Bob this sort of thing is why rebuilding my server scares me ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Mind rubber-ducking for a bit? :P
So I've got a fairly clean copy of 16.04 here.
I need my (sole) network interface to be named eth0.
It defaults to enp2.
I want to avoid disabling the 'predictable naming' thing altogether, if only so I can see if this works -_-
So far, I've tried creating a systemd link file that should set the name correctly.
But it turns out that systemd-networkd isn't running and I have no idea why. And networking is being all funny.
I guess what i need to figure out now is how to disable networking properly and enable just networkd
Also, networking is a terrible name to google

3:30 AM
lol

Bob
flub

my fedora box is set up with nmcli
I have no clue what the webserver does
hm
its on eth 0

Bob
like, what?
what happened to my .link file?!

;p
I'm on 16.04 ...
using eth0

Bob
o.O

3:36 AM
ah

@Bob that one I just might be able to remember, until I need it :/ Then I'm sure to forget it.
Good to know anyway. Thanks

@Bob looks like its disabled on the VM cause I upgraded.
and you should/could disable it on/with udev rules

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea uh... this is broken
like... it works ... but doesn't work
at the same time

lol
shrodinger's rules?

@JourneymanGeek Meow

Q: Interface will not rename under systemd

OldskoolI'm trying to rename a network interface on an Ubuntu 16.04 VPS, but am unable to do so. Systemd names my primary network interface enp0s3. I want to rename this interface to eth0. According to the systemd.link documentation I created a file called /etc/systemd/network/10-eth0.link with the foll...

that feeling when someone shares your pain but there's no good answer
ugh
I blame ubuntu

Q: Can I bring cut orchids from Singapore to Australia?

jpatokalChangi Airport has several shops that sell boxed cut orchids. Can I import these to Australia? Or will they be confiscated by Customs?

@JourneymanGeek If you ever come for another visit, you can bring flowers :P

@BenN My script works great now.... Except I'm running into an issue with local security groups ending up as SIDs instead of the SERVER\Group name. :S

@Bob orchids don't taste very good... I am told. Other than vanilla anyway.

Bob
4:24 AM
so uhm
I think I broke a scaleway node (???)

4:42 AM
@Bob you broke all their servers? ;p

Bob
5:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek possibly?
or just really bad timing

Bob
5:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek Arch docs are so good. And makes Debian docs look mediocre and Ubuntu docs look like they were written by ... I can't think of a description rude enough.

5:55 AM
lol
@Bob arch needs good docs to get anything done

@Bob Ubantu*

@JourneymanGeek Why is that? Is it because to get anything done you have to do it yourself?

@GypsySpellweaver precisely
their documentation is excellent tho

@JourneymanGeek At least you can't blame the tools when the systems goes fubar. Done did it yourself.:)

hmm
I donno. This seems just a little suspecious.

6:03 AM
looks specious

worth a delete at least

worth it

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh, I can't get anything done in Ubuntu
Because I can't figure out which doggamn network manager/d/thing it's using.
...I'm leaving that typo

lol
just run everything in alpine? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ha! That's the plan :P
anyway I did get a working boot
root@scw-feb646:~/Scaleway-Custom-Kernel# uname -r
4.4.0-72-generic
\o/
This feels like the kind of thing I should document and blog about :P

6:16 AM
but lazy? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lazy.

laaaaazy

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Funnily enough I've already kinda documented it via github project
but to have a blog post ... I need a blog :P

lol
Ghost seems nice.

Bob
to have a blog ... I need a name

6:18 AM
Been a while guys how are you.

I have a blog. Done nothing blogworthy

Bob
Anyone want to suggest a blog name? :D

Hi @NetworkKingPin

@Bob Bobbing along

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, I was planning to use that. The technical side is all sorted.
I'm not even kidding when I said the name's the thing stopping me

6:19 AM
@Bob Foxy News? :)

I was debating switching ;p
lol. I had it easy. I have a "brand"

Bob
@DavidPostill Ha, too close to a certain news channel I suspect :P

@JourneymanGeek I want to make an awesome kick-ass blog like yours.

Bob
@GypsySpellweaver Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

And "bobbing" can have a few different definitions :)

6:20 AM
@Nick its easy. shutup and write ;p
I haven't had any really interesting projects recently

Bob
I'm actually debating just using my full name
I mean, not for the blog. But just generally on SE.

I haven't gone to class today. Today, I'm spending all my time finishing my assignments, projects and finally, just finally making all the gosh-darn websites I want to.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Always the hard part, eh?

@JourneymanGeek Thank you for the cool advice.

@Bob the stuff that just works is boring.
matrix for example ;p
its a 10 minute, well documented install.

6:22 AM
@Bob http://my.full.name

Bob
Hm. Anyone here know anything systemd? :P

I don't think there's a .bobslastname tld

@Bob Are you our old Bob? You seem like a punk kid. Using a new-ass fox pokemon on your profile. Mhh... fox. Are you Bob Jr?

Bob
lol

@JourneymanGeek you ever get that job you wanted? I became unemployed and bouncing around so I didnt get back on for a while since probably mid 2016.

6:24 AM
@NetworkKingPin not yet

Well keep at it!

@JourneymanGeek You'll get there. You have my prayers with you.
My prayers typically go like, "Please cure the world of all it's evils and insufficiency. May my friends and family be protected and bless them with health and prosperity. Please guide me, my mom, my dad and Journeyman Geek find the job they deserve. Please prove you exist by sending me a private message on facebook. Thank you, Lord Prajapathi, creator of our universe." Then, I move to the next aisle in the temple and copy paste the same prayer to Shiva and Ganapathi.

1share = 1 prayer.

I sincerely hope Hindu deities understand English. Otherwise, boy, have I been praying wrong all these years.

6:30 AM
They understand only Sanskrit.

lol
@jokerdino my parents are pretty sure they speak tamil ;p

lol

and I believe a certain extent in hope and preperation. And sheer bloody dumb luck.

yeah, it's not fun.
I am already nervous about getting a job :S

@jokerdino A dead language akin to Latin. But CBSE (popular nation-wide school curriculum in India) does provide a Sanskrit language option starting in the 5th grade uptil 10th grade.

6:32 AM
Sorry, it might be dead to humans but Sanskrit is the language of the gods.

@jokerdino Me too. I'm just in my second year of getting a bachelor's degree. I'm hunting for part-time work and internships. Absolutely no luck. Today, I've somehow clicked a lot of invite links on WhatsApp and gotten myself involved in some large scale MLM scam service.
@jokerdino As reported by humans. You think Jesus spoke Sanskrit?

Depends if he is god or not.
hmm, I am going to attract some flags definitely.

@JourneymanGeek Someone was also convinced Jesus, a Hindu God, also spoke Tamil. zeenews.india.com/news/india/…

@jokerdino you could suspend yourself.
@Nick ugh, those stories
they're embarassing.

6:36 AM
Someone already flagged me here lol
A couple days before.

@jokerdino Do you have the power to kick yourself out?

Yes

I'm cool with any requests for divine inspiration to any deity you believe in ;p

I mean, can you ban yourself from this room? I know anyone can just leave on their own. I'm talking about perma-banning yourself.

No

6:37 AM
@Nick mods can't really be suspended or chatbanned I think

@JourneymanGeek I believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

and if it happens, well, the CMs will likely be having a word with someone
@Nick I'm cool with athiests too. ;p
amusingly...

@JourneymanGeek Please come and visit John Oliver's Church : Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption.

this is what I try to live by ;p

6:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek very beautiful. So much so, I want to read this out and put it on my podcast... the one I've been saying I'll make for months now.

Do it? ;p
funny thing is I discovered that years after I discovered the show

I AM GOING TO DO IT ALL TODAY! TODAY IS THE DAY! I WILL NOT REST UNTIL ALL MY DREAMS FOR TODAY ARE SATIATED! Carpe Diem! Carpe Noctum! Carpe Vitae! Carpe Viventium!
@JourneymanGeek Which show?

@Nick Babylon 5 - the URL is a bit of a giveaway :)
