12:14 AM
@JourneymanGeek wich Dedibox did you have?
I'm trying to get my hands on a XC 2016 right now :P
it's out of stock though

@Bob 8 core avaton, 8gb ram

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh, sounds like an older one

I'd consider upgrading once I have a job again and paying for 2 temporarily makes sense ;p
yup

Have to decide the name of my share drive. Might change the name of my Drobo, then that would free that name for the share, but that raises the question what to name the Drobo! Choices choices

Hi.

lo

7:26 AM
3 points. superuser.com/users/380318/ben-n?tab=profile I'm just going to go out on a limb and jump the gun to be the first to say congrats.

ah, yay

7:57 AM
20,002 now :D
@BenN Congratulations on 20k!

2 hours later…
9:32 AM
Hmm. Everything on the SE network seems exceptionally quiet today :)

@JourneymanGeek I think I know why - it is International Nose Picking Day! ;p

In the UK everybody is off fighting dragons.
Saint George's Day is the feast day of Saint George as celebrated by various Christian Churches and by the several nations, kingdoms, countries, and cities of which Saint George is the patron saint. Saint George's Day is celebrated on 23 April, the traditionally accepted date of the saint's death in Diocletianic Persecution of AD 303. For those Eastern Orthodox Churches which use the Julian calendar, this date currently falls on the day of 6 May of the Gregorian calendar. == Date == In the General Calendar of the Roman Rite, the feast of Saint George is on 23 April. In the Tridentine Calendar it...

so he's the patron saint of picking dragon noses... with swords?

9:46 AM
lol
A few years ago everybody would fly the English flag on St Georges day - but it seems to be largley ignored these days.

well never flew it myself

but it seems these days it's largely occupied by jokers such as bnp

@djsmiley2k and english football supporters hooligans

I have a small singapore flag patch which I am half certain is against the rules on display of the flag except between july to september and is probably in an illegal position on my backpack ;p

9:54 AM
@DavidPostill nod
and people who like wasting petrol by putting 4 or more flags outta their car windows xD

> no person shall use or apply the Flag or any image thereof as or as part of any costume or attire except in such circumstances as may be approved by the Minister, being circumstances wherein there is no disrespect for the Flag.

@JourneymanGeek Why can't you display it outside of those times?

@DavidPostill essentially we arn't allowed to be patriotic whenever we bloody well like
see part 9

@JourneymanGeek Yeah. 9.5 just seems a strange restriction.

(Our day of independance thing (we call it national day) is on august 9th, so its the period around that)

10:01 AM
That sort of makes sense then.

so no flag bikinnis?

hm. Hell no.

> The red and white trunks feature elements of Singapore's national flag, five stars and a crescent moon jutting up from the groin, leaving a somewhat unfortunate impression
> Singapore's government has rebuked the team which is competing at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, for failing to treat the national flag with respect.

10:14 AM
How can I find out how many mods there are for a specific stack?

@Bob Thanks

@GypsySpellweaver https://superuser.com/users?tab=moderators edit as necessary

0.
'[

U&L Stack, but I did the translation easily enough. Only 4 mods and 3 are in USA. All are asleep now.

Bob
10:20 AM
hm
boredom sets in
@JourneymanGeek since I can't get an XC server, I'm considering hacking a scaleway VM into loading my kernel via kexec :P

I didn't figure there would be very many. It is a relatively small stack. Just didn't expect they'd be mostly in the same time frame.

@Bob Can't you play games with @JourneymanGeek or something? ;p

Bob
@DavidPostill but I am! well, I kinda consider scaring him with tales of OS hackery to be fun :P

user226528
10:52 AM
Does anyone of you superdudes happen to know chemistry?

Bob
what is a chemistry

@FleetCommand I'm very rusty but I did qualify as a Chem Eng 40 years ago ...

user226528
@DavidPostill I am reading an article on Al alloys and it says "Both of the so-called alpha phases form in a script-like morphology." Any idea what script-like means?

 The Periodic Table

Haikus are awesome / Chemistry's even better / So pull up a chair

user226528
@DavidPostill Do I have posting privilege there?

10:58 AM
@FleetCommand No idea

@FleetCommand probably, you have >20 rep

user226528
I guess I'll just open an account in CSE and ask that as a question

@FleetCommand I think it refers to the micro structure looking like chinese letters.

user226528
@DavidPostill Thx. :)

11:04 AM
lol
@FleetCommand that's a very specific sort of chemistry

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Believe me, in a Chemistry chat room, any computer question seems like a "very specific sort of computing".

It's more material science or metallurgy than chemistry

@FleetCommand Well, vaguely, byut metallurgists are a seperate branch of it

Does get covered in Chem Eng though. I have heard of the phrase script-like :)

user226528
11:07 AM
Hmmm... So, you are saying that if Chemistry was to be compared to software development, metallurgy would be compared to system administration?

@JourneymanGeek Don't make fun of my degree ;p

@DavidPostill I entirely remember very little of what I studied as an EE major.

I've even got a published paper :)

user226528
I studied linguistics. I published a paper too.

Combines Chem Eng and Computer Modelling :)
I no longer have a copy of it ... :/
:36892939 lol

user226528
11:16 AM
Is that why I hate C++? I have never consciously associated C++ developers with C++ itself but maybe subconsciously something happened. Still, I love C#, so... I don't know.

11:46 AM

user226528
Yours?

lol In a manner of speaking.

user226528
T'is the roomie?

yup
Over at my brother's place. Decided he really liked that rubber mat

user226528
He's so tiny.

11:53 AM
He ;p
he's a mini/white schnauzer crossed with some sorta terrier
@allquixotic ^ lazy sit ;p
And yeah, he's not a big dog

12:15 PM
@JourneymanGeek aww

@Bob @BenN superuser.com/questions/1201567/… there's a 250 reputation bounty for this now

@JourneymanGeek ME! ME ME ME!

@Rahul2001 go earn it.

@JourneymanGeek There's a makefile. What more do you need?

@DavidPostill I don't think ./configure, make, make install works in windows.
and I have no clue how one pulls in dependancies
and...
lol. Hardly anyone compiles for windows
and both of them expressed interest in writing an answer so...

12:27 PM
1. Install mingw.
2. Run ` ./configure`, `make`, `make install`

heh. hardly ever that simple.
there's always a lot of faffing around grabbing dependancies.

@JourneymanGeek I would do it for cywin, but I can't be bothered.

lol
That's what the bounty is for.

Writing instructions for a beginner to build it from scratch is just too tedious.

Yeah but "There the link!" is such a unsatisfying answer :(
and it sounds like just the sort of thing I should spend Aibobot's reputation on

12:49 PM
errr
I can answer that...
tho it's a dupe of one i saw yesterday
they don't need to build it...

there's a exe

That's my answer

ok sigh
answeiring
wait who's is AiBot?
oh, you're giving the bounty if someone provides instructions? ewww

Yes ? ;p

12:51 PM
Eh, answer half-written. This is going to be looooong

Excellent!

@Rahul2001 have fun :D

Its a active HNQ too

The thing about compiling from source, it's never as simple as just 'Compile from source'
if it was, windows would do it automatically.

erm. If it was easy, I wouldn't be throwing it a bounty?

12:53 PM
hehe
yah i get that
How does aibot have so much rep?

erm
HNQ

A: My cat sat on my laptop, now the right side of my keyboard types the wrong characters

AibobotThat's the standard tenkeyless Num Lock key layout found on many PCs. Turn off Num Lock - on my Lenovo, it's Fn + F10, but the combination may vary by manufacturer.

Ah wow, nice

lol. The original answer was a onliner...
which blew up so I added a screenshot so it was less crap...
which didn't help

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...your sock has a higher scored post than your highest
THAT'S NOT HOW THIS WORKS

lol

1:00 PM
@Bob lol. I dun goofed there
@Bob I still find that mystifying

A: How do I install a Windows program (written in C) downloaded from GitHub?

Rahul2001Github is primarily used by programmers to collaborate on projects. The 'Download ZIP' option downloads a copy of the source code to your computer. This usually1 doesn't contain a copy of the compiled usable executables/binaries (ie; exe files) Releases, is a Github feature for shipping software...

More details required?

Bob
@Rahul2001 I feel you shouldn't completely ignore the MSVC side of things... but otherwise looks good.
Wait, you've also ignored the build system (make) entirely. Which makes it an okay theoretical primer but ... doesn't really answer the question as asked :\

@Bob Oh, I drafted it out, forgot to post, one sec...

Bob
Also... can we please stop recommending Dev C++? -_-
that thing is ancient
even the 'updated' one is a bit shoddy
:\

Eh, it's cool for beginners

Bob
(but yea that's a more personal gripe)
@Rahul2001 No. It's not cool for beginners.
It gets beginners into terrible habits.

1:25 PM
@Bob hm, okay. Alternatives?

@Bob @Rahul2001 Agreed. There is makefile for mingw in the distribution.

Bob
It's cool for people who learned in 2002 and also haven't bothered keeping up to date since.
It's cool for people who love XP and refuse to let it go.

VS is too complex

Bob
Alternatives? Code::Blocks is decent and well maintained. VSCode with the C++ extension works pretty well.

@Bob I suspect using MSVC will require substantial changes to the provided makefile ;)

Bob
1:27 PM
@DavidPostill Yes, but I feel the answer should cover those cases as well - it should at least go into how to identify the build system (between the common cygwin, mingw (different!!!) and msvc/msbuild)

@Rahul2001 its a day or two before I can accept, and I really do want to give the bounty to the best possible answer. It does look decent.

Bob
The answer as posted will be have maybe 50% chance of success to the casual reader with the approx skill level of the asker.
This is why I felt too lazy to answer it -_-

@Bob Me too :)

Bob
These are the standards I'd expect of a good answer to the teetering-on-overly-broad question.

Hm, I'll keep adding stuff. I'm learning a lot in the process anyway :)

Bob
1:29 PM
@Rahul2001 Dev C++ breaks just about every modern convention in existence.

@Bob Alternatives?

Bob
I'm honestly surprised it even supports makefiles.
3 mins ago, by Bob
Alternatives? Code::Blocks is decent and well maintained. VSCode with the C++ extension works pretty well.

@Bob Cool, ok

@Bob The trouble is the program ask how to install the program not how to build it. IMHO answers that tell you you how to build it are overcomplicating a simple question, which already has the correct answer, provided by @JourneymanGeek

@DavidPostill on the other hand, the question as written supposes there's no exe.

1:31 PM
How to build it should be a different and maybe canonical question - that probably belongs on SO anyway.

Bob
@DavidPostill @JourneymanGeek's answer would be deserving of a too localised on the question.
Unless the question is edited to be "how do I install <program name>"

@Bob I didn't expect it to HNQ

Oooh, the one-legged crow came back!

which is why I want a better answer there ;p

@JourneymanGeek Only because he didn't look properly. He downloaded the source code when he should have clicked on the release tab. Installing has nothing to do with building from scratch (although it may be the last step in the build process).

Bob
1:34 PM
@JourneymanGeek The question of how to build is of interest to a non-dev user...

The real question is in the body of the question "Is there something simple that I'm missing?"

Bob
The SU/SO distinction is more by the target audience rather than the specific action, I think.

@Bob I'm a non dev user. I compile a load of stuff ;p
Granted, I am in a bloody odd place in that respect.
@DavidPostill that much was obvious.

MSVC is something that I don't have a lot of experience with...

@Rahul2001 I'm certain there's a half a dozen different approaches here

1:40 PM
sigh

Its ok!

It's like saying "I have a box of chips, resistors and transistors and a circuit diagram - how do I make a video card" Building a Video card would be off-topic, no?

Hm, added SO links about makefiles with mingw.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek And I feel an answer would need to at least touch on most of them. See: lazy

Bob
1:43 PM
@DavidPostill Poor analogy; one is fully achievable at home, while the other is not.
It's closer to "I have a box of computer parts, how do I put them together?"

Anyway I think you are all polishing a turd of a question and making it into something it isn't - just because it's HNQ

@DavidPostill plausibly.

I've said my piece so now I will shut up :)

Bob
@DavidPostill It's one of those where the answer makes the question.
But... that answer hasn't really appeared yet.

@DavidPostill also I'd like to point out, the reputation that I've put up is also from a question that's not that great, with an answer that didn't quite deserve a kilorep...

Bob
1:48 PM
@Rahul2001's one is close, but a bit too narrow.

@Bob Bleh. What more should I add?
Except msvc

Bob
sigh.
maybe I should stop being lazy. but ... lazy.

Bob
yesterday, by Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea uh... I started writing one, then gave up... realised I'd probably need to get into explaining why figuring out dependencies and frameworks would be difficult
And msvc is really really important when people ask about compiling programs on Windows...

I think I'll just go all @FleetCommand on him and ask the guy to buy a book on coding :P

Bob
1:54 PM
tbh, it feels like the kind of question we should have a canonical/answer for, but I'm more surprised it doesn't come up daily :\

@Bob hardly anyone not a dev compiles on windows
On linux, grabbing dependancies and frameworks is trivial thanks to package management

@JourneymanGeek Me? (But I guess I kinda count as a dev?)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek OTOH, on Windows running a precompiled program is trivial thanks to SxS :P
Good luck running a dynamically-linked app targeting a different libc on Linux o.O

@Rahul2001 I'm completely happy to git clone, run ./configure and make till I've worked out all the deps, make, make install...
or checkinstall.

Bob
Ugh. Two sections into an answer and I feel like I'm writing a bloody play
set the scene...
list of characters...
*goes back to being lazy*

2:05 PM
yey
someones getting logged into a temp profile over and over again
i check AD - their profile path is wrong... wtf?
ok fine, fixed that
STILL happening aurgh
and now the windows profile service has fallen over o_O?

send help plz :/
So now I've removed ALL the profiles!
rebooted, windows showing preparing desktop..
and now this copy of windows is not genuine? wtf

@JourneymanGeek Whoa, my answer got accepted!
Thanks, this is a great answer, and I've changed it to be marked as the definitive one. (I'd earlier edited my question to make it clearer that this was what I was looking for, but for some reason BoundaryImposition edited it out.) — Josh Friedlander 1 min ago

can i somehow generate a new sid for a user via AD?

2:11 PM
@Rahul2001 I am going to wait for a few days to award the bounty, but unless there's a better answer...

so when they next login, it's like 'ooo new profile' rather than trying to link to one that doesn't exist, or whatever is happenign

@JourneymanGeek Sure

Bob
I have a glossary O_O

Bob
2:33 PM
ugh, I suspect that was a huge waste of time, but...
1
A: How do I install a Windows program (written in C) downloaded from GitHub?

BobThis answer will be addressing the general question of building a source-only Windows application (in C). If you're lucky like the OP, you might be able to find precompiled binaries. The first thing to be aware of here is that there's no single way to build an app from source. They're approximat...

Un-lazy'd long enough to write that :P

;p
> The third, and hardest, part is dealing with extra framework and library dependencies.

Bob
...ok, those upvotes aren't right. they're much faster than anyone could possibly read the damn thing -_-

That's one place where linux is a lot easier ;p

I read it :P

@JourneymanGeek This got 77 upvotes? WTF?

Bob
2:36 PM
@Rahul2001 The ways of the HNQ are a mystery to us all.

@Rahul2001 do keep up. That's why I wanted to put a bounty on it.

@Rahul2001 lots of people don't know what releases are.
if it just said 'downloads' there'd never be a question

@JourneymanGeek Still. 77 is a lot.

but my thing in life, is being angry about developers not thinking like users.

2:37 PM
@Rahul2001 I've had 8 consecutive repcaps due to HNQ
today's likely the first day this week I don't think I'll repcap

and now son, you know how mods are made ;)

@djsmiley2k more like 100K users.
;p

haha

I vaguely know exactly what's the minimum my audience wants sometimes.

yeah that too

Bob
2:39 PM
@JourneymanGeek Actually, thanks for pointing that out... the "third" bit was before I realised the list of terms was rather useless in a practical sense :P
and then added the wall'o'steps. ugh.

my answer is link only, but it'd truely be too long to give the entire setup... :/ superuser.com/questions/1202486/…

eh, you give a broad overview of what is needed
not sure that should have been migrated tho

2:58 PM
It's a pretty bad migration question.
actually

3:22 PM
@Burgi I presume you know Sonos has a Http API?

4:17 PM
and it's gone so quiet
sigh
i've taken 2 phone calls all day.
I made 2 calls, to the same guy, and didn't even fix his issue :(

@djsmiley2k Did he try turning it off and back on?

5:10 PM
haha yes we did @Mokubai
windows won't load his profile
i thought the problem was his name was incorrectly spelt in AD.... (in the profile field) but appently not :/
At which point I raised my hands and went 'oh wtf?'
Also fun, tills in america being removed from their domain server
which is great fun when we don't have a local admin account (fortunately I found a working admin account!)

6:01 PM
r u all sleeping off sunday dinner?

@djsmiley2k On just one machine, or all of them?
Oh hey, I'm 20K! Good morning everyone!
Thanks @Rahul2001 @fixer1234 @DavidPostill!

6:20 PM
@BenN he only has one to test on
tho he was newly given this one that doens't work, previously the one before did iwork...

Perhaps it's just the local profile that got messed up. Does the usual Registry renaming thing help?

it doesn't show up in the registry at all :/
i went so far to delete ALL the profiles from the registry, still didn't help

Hm. In AD, does the user have a logon script set?

6:40 PM
@BenN, we need you doing 20K work. You were spitting distance away for weeks, and watching the snail pace of progress was painful. So it's about damn time! :-)

:D
I've recently been busy putting on a play, but it finished last night, so I have much more free time now

@BenN not that I recall
the error in the error log is 'access is denied'
:/

Any specific object that access is denied to?

Normally I can fix these kida things, but this one confused me.
their profile? XD

Heh, I meant if the event specified a path

6:43 PM
[ Name] Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service
[ Guid] {89B1E9F0-5AFF-44A6-9B44-0A07A7CE5845}
Nope
gives me a UserID as well

Is the ACL on the AD user object correct?
Compare it with that of a working user

uyp looked ok to me

And you're sure there isn't an existing profile for the user on the machine?

yup, nuked all the profiles
it never worked since he first got it last thursday

6:59 PM
Is the profile folder still in \Users?

nope, it never gets created
just TEMP
TEMP.1, etc
deleted all that too
It doesn't even log him into the same temp profile, if he logs out (Should it?)

Interesting. Could you post the full data of the event(s)? Redact anything company-specific of course
I thought the temp profile was supposed to be nuked after logout, but I'm not sure

Should UID be redacted
?

SID? It includes your domain SID, which some might not want public. You can redact that, since it wouldn't be useful to me anyway

7:04 PM
OK, it thinks the person has a roaming profile
Double-check the profile path in the AD account object
Also verify that no logon script is set if there shouldn't be one

they might have a roaming profile...
tho normally they'll be using the same laptop
originally hte profile path in the AD account was wrong
it was missing the last letter of the username, which was weird.... but i fixed that (and confirmed the profile folder existed)

Does the profile folder have appropriate security settings?
IIRC Windows only automatically finagles that iff you create the folder afresh with the AD tool

on the server?

7:19 PM
Yep

yeah, as far as I can tell, it matches the other ones
No logon script, just a profile path

If there are files in it, do they have reasonable-looking security settings?

ok that's weird
the folders look, odd
every other folder in that dir looks like the bottom one
other than this guys

It must have a special desktop.ini

wait
maybe he DOESN'T have a roaming profile after all..
and someone's accidently put his home folder in the profile path, wtf?
/me senses someone was on crack

7:23 PM
That could be it

yah
ty for being my rubber duckie
I didn't question the path being there, as other than it being one letter wrong, ... why would someone of put it there if it wasn't meant to be? XD

:D Glad you figured it out

Welp the user isn't at the office now, left message to have them test again
I'll prob end up calling them myself tomorrow afternoon

7:44 PM
Still, you confirmed I was thinking along the right lines at least :D
