7:00 AM
Looks like a Star-Trek rip-off. What's so special about it?

Bob
After all this kackery...
Plus side: I kinda understand systemd now
Minus side: I want to defenestrate Ubunutu

If I ever go partially bald, I won't hide the bald spot. I want to make my hair look like Londo Mollari!

@Nick It's the best space soap every made!

@DavidPostill I prefer Earth soap. Dettol and Lifebouy know how to clean my pits.

7:04 AM
@Bob That's a new word for me. At first I thought it was cutting off one's member, now I know the actual meaning thanks to google define.
@Bob I spend a decent amount of time thinking about init systems. I've never actually thought about systemd services though. Initscripts are for pros like you, not n00bs like me. What do you have to tell me about systemd? why is it useful for you?

@Nick it's a really good example of classic 90s space opera.

@JourneymanGeek Ah, the 90s. I'm so glad, being born in '97 still made me a 90s kid. I can still claim to have enjoyed all the good stuff. But not Babylon 5. That and Firefly are shows I've heard people talk a lot about but never actually remembered to check out. I will now, thanks.

Bob
@Nick If you need to start something on boot...

@Nick modern init systems make a lot of things easy
For example I run ttrss, which relies on a scrupt running to keep updated
I could stick it in a cronjob but if things failed it wouldn't restart
a init script manages that, and if the script fails for some reason, restarts it

@JourneymanGeek Uh, could I like access your rss feed via that?

7:15 AM
[Unit]
Description=ttrss_update
After=network.target
After=postgresql@9.5-main.service

[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/bin/php /var/www/lupinenet/ttrss/update_daemon2.php
User=www-data
Type=simple
Restart=Always
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=default.target
So, I need to run /var/www/lupinenet/ttrss/update_daemon2.php - after networking starts (since rss feeds are pointless without networking) and after my postgres server does..
so essentially you can create a series of rules to start things in order

@Bob On Windows, you have some easy GUI-based thing called StartUp Manager and Task Scheduler which can be used to run processes whenever you want. For example, a shell script that checks for and downloads the latest xkcd comic every morning.

and this isn't particularly complex compared to a classic init script

@JourneymanGeek Oh, that's pretty neat.

(I was using supervisord previously for the same reasons)
@Nick cron does roughly what task scheduler does
and for some things you can always just set up cron on reboot

morning guys

7:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek I've never actully run a cron job. Always prefer boot to Win10 because I grew up on Microsoft OS's starting from XP and '95/98

lol
@Nick I had windows 95 on floppies

However, I hear Ubuntu 17.04 beta can be customised to look a bit like Windows. So, I'm waiting for the beta to be canon. or whatever you call the official LTS release.
@JourneymanGeek Never knew OS's booted off floppies till now. Boy, am I young.

lol
I installed it off floppies.
I think it was 25 of em

@JourneymanGeek Ah, that makes much more sense. Thank you.

but you could totally boot dos off floppies

7:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think I have Windows 3.1 on floppies somewhere

@MichaelFrank I never even knew there was a 3.1

....
lol
My second pc came with that

Yea, our first PC had this thing called QuikMenu on it.

@JourneymanGeek DOS. Wait, is that still possible? What's the biggest modern DOS version I can run off a floppy. There a many flavors nowadays.

7:26 AM
Windows 1.01 :)

@DavidPostill Wow

@Nick lol. freedos should still work
might even do UEFI

@Nick Released 31 years ago ;p

@DavidPostill Back then, my mom would have been the same age my brother is today. My brother is half my age on my next birthday. Solve for the ages of my brother, mother and me.

@Nick You can still download it

7:29 AM
@DavidPostill we didn't have a PC at that point I think. I might have also been in diapers
@DavidPostill tsk tsk. abandonware's one of those very grey areas ;p

user226528
:\

@DavidPostill OMG They have quikmenu!
"link"

(I wouldn't quite link that)
;p
But as a mod, meh, you gotta make those decisions ;p

@JourneymanGeek What link? ;)

7:32 AM
;)
(Welcome to modding. Where its a pain in the donkey, cause the first person you need to moderate is you ;p)

@JourneymanGeek Self-moderation. That is the key to all.

@Nick also, as far as chat goes, our tools when it comes to other mods is basically gentle yelling ;p

@DavidPostill As JMG said, it's abondonware. i have no interest but maybe I'll demo it to the foss kids I know. Is it foss yet?

Sometimes private
@Nick probably not
@Nick I mean, if you know its there, you know its there

Bob
@JourneymanGeek halp :P

7:34 AM
I really enjoy the discussions in this room. Even though I don't use superuser.com at all, this room is one corner of the internet that I particularly enjoy visiting.

but I certainly would remind folks of the legal greyness of those things, especially considering SE chat is public

Bob
I managed to create some kind of dependency cycle O_O

@Nick we've done an awesome job at chat culture ;p

Bob

Bob

After=system.slice sysinit.target systemd-journald.socket basic.target

requires and before?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol, yea

that seems illogical

@Bob (O-0) (0_O) Whaat am I looking at?

Bob
7:36 AM
the idea is, system boots, runs this service, which then runs kexec immediately afterwards
@JourneymanGeek the way kexec works is you load the new kernel and then invoke a special shutdown afterwards
which I can do manually, no prob
...trying to figure out the services, on the other hand...

> A little more moderation would be good. Of course, my life hasn't exactly been one of moderation -- Donald Trump

@DavidPostill Mr Trump would not make it long as a SU mod ;)

You've said so much today, lol looks like a drowning man.
lol ... \o/ ... \ol ... help ... lo/ ... \o/ ... lol

user226528
Well, it is always possible to change course for the better.

7:40 AM
> Moderation is the center wherein all philosophies, both human and divine, meet. -- Benjamin Disraeli

@JourneymanGeek You should take over his office. You might actually do a better job.

@Nick I don't really want that job ;p
or anything political in non online communites
I mean, a SU mod is essentially a semi political role

@JourneymanGeek what is this? You ask for a good job, I offer you a job and you say you don't want it? Why do you disrespect me so, on the eve of my daughter's marriage?

@Nick ;p

user226528
I swear I heard this in a movie once.

7:43 AM
@Nick I'm a firm believer that any politician needs to have a background in the real world, and a limited period in power.

@FleetCommand It was Zootopia. A small rat-creature leading the mafia, he says it.

The day I feel I can't/don't act in the best interest of my constituents (You rascals) I can't really be a mod ;p
@Nick ... Godfather.

morning

@DavidPostill That man was twice Prime Minister of the UK. He should have taken his own advice, honestly.

user226528
@Nick I didn't say I didn't know the movie's name.

7:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek No...Zootopia.

"The Godfather Scene"

@Nick @DavidPostill shame he spelt "centre" as if he used Microsoft Word

How could you forget Mr. Big, the godfather XD

user226528
Hmm. So you guys all have seen Zootopia, but none of you have played StarCraft II, in which Tychus Findlay says "I swear I've seen this in a movie once".

@FleetCommand apparently not

7:47 AM
@Burgi There's actually a subtly difference. It's centre of the circle, and city center. A place you go to is a center. Food center, hair center, ice-cream center, et cetera.

@Nick not in the UK

@FleetCommand Nope XD Is Starcraft II free to play?
@Burgi What's it like in the UK? Is it the opposite?

user226528
@Nick Yes.

@Nick the first game is

@Burgi lol

7:48 AM
@Nick its spelt "centre", not "center"

80
A: What's the difference between "center" and "centre"?

snailplaneOriginally, everyone spelled it centre, but because of Noah Webster's spelling reforms, people in the US started spelling it center, particularly in the last century. Although the revised spelling center has been adopted internationally to varying extents, centre is still more popular in most re...

also while we are at it, there is no such word as "spelled", it's "spelt"

user226528
@Nick Although, I must warn you, like all the free to play games, the free experience is very limited.

This place has quickly become more language-centered than the eng.SE room

A: What's the difference between "center" and "centre"?

NitroNickI'm Australian, so the following refers to British/Australian/New Zealand spelling and also for most Commonwealth (ex-British Empire) countries too. The spelling of these two words is different depending on it's meaning. If it is referring to the middle of something, such as the middle of a circl...

Bob
7:50 AM
my search history from today

@Burgi Notice. language-centered.

Bob
requires before conflict
NSA must be very confused :P

@nick Are you Australian?

@DavidPostill indian

@Bob you could have two units calling the same thing, one before and one after
@DavidPostill nick is from the old country ;p

Bob
7:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek uhhhhhhh

its so hot in this office

@Bob That's nothing. I explicitly search "I am a terrorist who wants to kill everyone" everyday. I'm a perv who wants to be spied on.
Sometimes I do google searches like I'm sending direct messages to NSA agents.
"I know you're listening. I will find you and I will put a dirty bomb in the airplane that crashes into the next Pork Cloud Mexico"

user226528
-_-

0=0
o-o

7:55 AM
@Nick if Homeland Security shuts down chat, I am finding you and leaving a nice warm present on your pillow.

user226528
lol

user226528
Stress on "warm"

haha, I'm sure they won't. they prolly caught on that I'm just joking. If they haven't I'm probably going to wake up one day in a government-funded torture chamber.
@FleetCommand Please let it be a little kitty cat.

@Nick or you already are, and your mind broke ala brazil.

This entire chat is a delusion my mind is playing to keep me sane.

7:56 AM
@Nick erm. Not exactly. By which I mean not at all.

@Nick This is the torture. :D

haha. I'm actually not joking about trying to contact spies.
Check out my last tweet
Pork, Cloud, Mexico. Team Dirty Bomb. I repeat : Pork, Cloud, Mexico. #AllahhuAkber Dear spies reading this, please DM me proof you exist.

@Nick you need to say it in arabic. Or better yet arcane akkadian.

@jokerdino Having no webcam helps :/

8:00 AM
You would be surprised.

@JourneymanGeek Ah, I lived in the middle east for my whole childhood. Yet, I could never pick up much Arabic. Indian-immigrants were everywhere. I know Arabic numbers and few phrases thanks to the currency notes and coins but besides greetings and goodbyes, I don't know Arabic.
@jokerdino I mean, if a video stream were going from my system, wouldn't I know about it?

@Nick no?

@GypsySpellweaver Or a crappy one. I took a pic on it once wearing a nude-colored shirt. I looked like a nude Ghost In Shell agent.
@JourneymanGeek how? What if 0.00kbps were uploaded and downloaded when I do nothing online. How would they hide that info?

@Nick they're exfiltrating the information through your microwave, duh.
Or was that exfoliating...

That's getting a bit hair raising

user226528
8:03 AM
@jokerdino They'd be busy making **** with all the camera feed they get. Never underestimate the evil.

@Nick If you've been hacked nothing in your computer can be believed

@Nick you should try travelling to america

@JourneymanGeek Ha, idiots. My microwave is connected to my TV set (it acts a lifter) and my PhoneWave app (a messenger which lets me send text messages to the past thereby causing a distortion in reality with unintended butterfly effect based consequences)

@Burgi I wonder if they'll let me in. I have an uncle and some cousins who are citizens.

8:06 AM
@Burgi Try being the operative word. United Airlines will drag you off the plane and/or assault you with a pushchair :)

> Open Question: Will someone pay for my website? I'll re-imburse you (+interest) using AdSense.

lol. You could talk someone into helping you host it, maybe

@DavidPostill Ha, more idiots. I know how to drag myself off a plane, thank you very much. I've been practising for if-ever the need arises.

@DavidPostill My, that's entirely unfair. Its american airlines that beats people with pushchairs. We need to give credit where credit is due.

@JourneymanGeek Who in the right mind would host my website? Heck, who in their right mind would even willingly talk to me?

8:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek Oops. My mistake :)

@JourneymanGeek Hehe. Check out Indian Airline, where customers beat employees up :)

@Nick now now. The man wanted an upgrade to business class.
How could someone deny the most honourable and august Rajya Sabha MP a business class seat in a single class plane?

@JourneymanGeek He clearly didn't offer a big enough bribe.

@Nick 000webhost.com DO NOT TRUST THESE GUYS WITH YOUR PASSWORDS ;p

8:10 AM
PUH-LEASE!!!! what ever you guys can do, the UK does better...

@JourneymanGeek When I was a kid, I travelled from Cochin back to Muscat all alone. Because I was alone, Oman Air gave me a free upgrade to Business class. So many goodies. Food, DVD player, personal attention, personal radio where the RJ talked to me when I called. that was my first time flying first class. I was like 8-9, maybe.

lol, sweet

@JourneymanGeek that won't do. I only have one password...and it's "p455w0rd". Notice how adding numerals gives it security.

Your password is ********?
2

I got offered an upgrade flying from Bali to the UK by the check in agent (Malaysian Airlines). It involved paying some cash - UKP 20 IIRC -- to another airline employee in the cafe outside the terminal. I enjoyed business class :)

8:12 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, for those sites that accept it. Other sites have such complicated rules with symbols and alphanumerics and sequences and using common words.

lol
Speaking of india and politics...
Apparently its interesting times in my "home" state, indiawise ;p

@Burgi Well what do you expect - it was Manchester :)

lots of fun political drama.

Speaking of passwords, scientists have proven passphrases are more secure and memorable. "mybilboisbiggerthanyourbilbo" is the safest password I've ever used.

actually, one possible murder, yet another political schism and.... indiatoday.intoday.in/story/…

8:15 AM
@DavidPostill we have to show the colonies how its done...

You might have a harthaal tomorrow http://www.thenewsminute.com/article/tamil-nadu-bandh-tuesday-autos-buses-list-all-services-will-be-hit-60873

But I'm sure they'll cancel that. Maybe.

eh. as far as local TN politics goes, both sides are rotten to the core ;p

@DavidPostill I would like to fly business more often. My tuition teacher flew first class on a flight where I flew economy. Funny thing is she must have used the money I gave her for her classes. Funnier thing is I flunked the subjects she taught me :D

lol
I flew business class on indian airlines years ago...
you had better seats and a tattered 'tablecloth'
;p
other than that I mostly seem to fly cargo economy class ;p

8:19 AM
@Burgi Hmm NSFW images in that link :)

yeah i didn't realise until i scrolled down

@JourneymanGeek I stole their blankets last time I flew.

the whole article seems to be her instagram feed

@Burgi I've written some crappilly formatted articles but even I know, that's just too many images. Atleast use a gallery.
@JourneymanGeek If I start an airline, I'd actually allow people in cargo. Half the rate of economy.
@MichaelFrank Here's a dose of nostalgia for you : classicreload.com/neosoft-quikmenu-iii.html

Bob
:D it works
@JourneymanGeek I've just successfully hacked around the scaleway limitation :D
the one where you can only use their kernels

8:33 AM
Hey, I've tweeted that too. Guy's can I ask a favor, something only a late teen would ever ask you...
A flash from the past. "QuikMenu III" is an icon-based graphical menu and desktop application for DOS. Check it out: https://classicreload.com/neosoft-quikmenu-iii.html

Bob
(I assume they're fine with it, considering they've said booting straight from disk is planned, and considering they've allowed other users to post forum guides on bypassing the iPXE process... the only difference is mine is automated)

@NickKartha < --- Follow, RT and Like my tweets. I follow-back and RT all mentions :D
@Bob Sounds like you've done something grand. Good job.

8:46 AM
@Nick lol. I do the opposite
I only tweet when people insist I do so they can retweet me
Hot as lava, black as death. As metal as coffee should be.

@JourneymanGeek Tweet right now. I will RT you!
K, You've been RT'd.

Bob
8:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek I only tweet when I want to vent at Microsoft Support :P

Microsoft uses Twitter, that's the only service they haven't tried to clone.
Hey, guys, have you heard about Mastadon? I just got to know about recently.

Yup. Twitter clone

9:16 AM
Morning all o/
My Sunday fun was getting Arch up and running
Which mostly involved shouting at nvidia for correctly detecting the cards, correctly detecting the attached displays, and yet still displaying nothing
I hope everyone else's weekends were as fun and productive :P

(as a side note, doing the above two days before a big presentation is scheduled is not a good idea)

Bob
@bertieb s/Arch/Ubuntu/ and s/Nvidia/systemd/ and that was my day today :P
graphics on linux, bleh

9:32 AM
Hi!

@Bob Oh joy :-/
I thought Ubuntu was one of these Just Works distros... Suppose anything like that is always variable

Today marks the completion of two months of me and my girlfriend being together :)

@Rahul2001 Grats, what special thing are you doing to celebrate?

@bertieb She has a guitar exam tomorrow, so not much. We'll plan something for after that.

Bob
@bertieb It works until you touch it wrong :P

9:38 AM
@Bob TWSS, are we still talking about Ubuntu etc etc
:P
@Rahul2001 As long as you get a chance to do something nice at some point :)

Bob
@bertieb Oh wait that was supposed to be a reply to @Rahul2001 ;P

:D

@bertieb Honestly, kinda tough to do. India, etc etc...

@Rahul2001 I'm sure you'll both come up with something :)

@bertieb hopefully :)

10:15 AM

Bob
lol

hey @Rahul2001

'lo

10:36 AM
question
I have an issue with my pc
3 days ago
I had 70Go of free space on my HD
and now
suddenly, the free space has dried up to 0
what can I do to check what happened

@AndyK You can use windirstat.net to see a visual representation of what your biggest folders are.

11:15 AM
WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME THERE WAS A NEW BAYWATCH?????

11:31 AM
@Rahul2001 always makes me grin

@Burgi lmao

@Burgi cause I didn't really care :p

do you not realise how that show shaped my school years?
when you grow up in the cold, wet, grey north of england watching a tv show filled with fit, toned and tanned people in it was super glamorous
in my mind everyone in southern california is gorgeous and lives on the beach

12:03 PM
@MichaelFrank didn't have enough space even to download
I went for the conquer and divide method

@AndyK how do your elections work? I mean how does the 2nd round thing work?

I don't think anyone can improve on my answer :)

Did that really hnq?

12:18 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yes.
User script showing HNQ:

look for the folders that were too big in the %appdata% folder
and voilà
@Burgi

yes...?

sorry, busy
2 rounds
to win 1st, you need 50%
if you don't second round
the one who has the best score wins the second round

12:37 PM
i guess the loosers from 1st round are dropped
or do you actually vote twice?

2nd round = only 2 canidates
the ones with the biggest scores
@Burgi as I said, the murder of that police officer did not change the outcome of the election
if there was something more massive, it would have affected the outcome

12:54 PM
given brexit IS happening which one of the two is more likely to give the UK an easier time?

Le Pen. She is advocating for a frexit

isn't she also mad?

if Macron is elected, that guy is probably as pro business as is Schäuble
populist would be the correct word for Le Pen
