12:03 AM
4:3 screen?

12:54 AM
^^^ Is that CPU enough?
(I'm a Java programmer.)

nope, its not enough
for java to run fast, you need an i9
because there isn't an i9. Get it, guys? ...guys?
@PaulVargas are you building it now?
If so, why didn't you go skylake?

this one needs to go up to 11... ;p
enough is relative
Depends on what you're doing.
nice chip tho
and I didn't realise intel fabbed in vietnam

yeah, it is a great i7
@JourneymanGeek intel has been fabbing in vietnam for many years afaik
I'd rather go skylake, but well, that chip should be enough for 3-4 years.

1:10 AM
@arda Because the i7-4790K is more cheaper than I7-6700K. :/

@arda I've not built a system since ivy. ;p
I might be planning some upgrades if I have a stable job, or at least a annual, not 2 month contract ;)

Dog
@Hennes Hey that's the same power supply as me! Kind of
I'm still waiting for Skylake-E which I'll be buying whether or not I have a job
If I'm still into computers by then

I built one last month for a friend, skylake i5-6500k, 16gb vengeance ddr4 rams. Also waiting for aftermarket rx480s to come to Turkey.

Pro tip: installing coolers is a PITA, and the non-modular Power Supplies are terrible for cable management.

@arda I wouldn't ever buy a non modular power supply any more I think

no one should

1:14 AM
for one thing not having molex connectors you don't need is lovely
granted I have one device that needs it at the moment, and its strange and DIY ;p

the case is bent due to the pressure by cables

Dog
My last non-modular power supply has a pile of 2- and 3-way splitters on it because it doesn't have enough molex connectors

the case had a weird spot for PSU which made moving cables to mobo really hard too

@Dog what exactly needs a ton of molex connectors?
I use em for my bias lighting since I modded a molex -> FDD connector for powering them
(oh, another thing I get to leave out)
I might totally redo it if I can be arsed to get some acrylic tube

Bob
@JourneymanGeek it's a good generic connector that has a million and one adapter options available

1:20 AM
@PaulVargas Depends on what you're doing with Java. If you're doing System.out.println("Hello, World!"); then you could do that on a Raspberry Pi or a netbook. If you're modeling realistic oceanic topography looking for patches of oil, you'll need several dozen racks full of high-end Xeon CPUs with terabytes of memory and SSDs.

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Fans, PCI cards, hard drives, more fans.

People have done everything from code up a software lightswitch to building spacecraft with Java. There's absolutely no way we can tell from "I'm a Java programmer" what your hardware requirements could possibly be.

Bob
@allquicatic So, "running NetBeans Eclipse" == "modeling realistic oceanic topography"? :P

@Bob "a ton of"
sure I use em, they're easy to mod...
@Dog molex fans... I guess you like white noise?

Dog
@JourneymanGeek PWM control ftw

1:22 AM
@Bob actually, I think the latter might be lightwer on the hardware...
@Dog ah, but wouldn't that be one molex to controller to ALL THE FANS?

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Three.
Because the fan splitters I have are 4-way with one molex

._.
12 fans? 0_0

Bob
@JourneymanGeek You're talking to the guy who had a dozen HDDs

Dog
11, well 12 if you include the one in the PSU

Q: Deleted all pc files, now he's does not start up

Windows userI have a windows home premium and he DOES NOT start up. I basically wanted to free up some more space on the computer.... I delete all the files...or at least all the ones I could. He won't start up, I can't go on safe mode or anything.. I'm stuck on repair mode. A nd I already did all t...

Not sure if troll

Dog
Wait no, 10.

@Bob I was assuming in an array

Dog
@Bob A dozen? Come on
I have 26 HDDs

Bob
you don't HAVE Windows Home Premium anymore. You deleted it. — Aganju 48 mins ago

Dog
Wait no, 24 HDDs, two SSDs, in the server. And one FDD (flash disk drive)
No wait, it is 11
Three pairs of 120mm fans (redundant pairs) at the front of the chassis to pull air through the HDDs. One CPU fan. Two 80mm fans at the back for exhaust. One fan in the PSU. One fan on the RAID cards.
Oh yeah, and need six molex connectors for the HDDs too
That's with one molex for each 4-drive backplane

1:27 AM
Any suggestions on a battery-powered or rechargeable reading lamp for night reading?

Dog
Good job there's no graphics card, or I might be needing molex to PCIe adapters too

@Dog Blah. Not sure if I'd ever need 24 disks in a storage server. I anticipate needing 8 at most.

Dog
Ooh I need to watch more air crash investigation

> You can enrol in but as there is shortage of resources it is taking much more time than expected and hence for any carination or core increase related request for N- Series Vms are requested to contact the N-series team. It’s unfortunate that we still do not any date when it will accessed to us to give the information about the N-Series Vms to the customers.

@Dog Yes, yes you do.

@Bob Yeeeees

Bob
o.O

My Plantronics Marque 2 M165 can connect to both my phone and laptop with full headset and audio functionality but it does not come with a dongle of any sort. Phones and PCs can and do use the same Bluetooth profiles for communications and audio. Just salesperson nonsense, purposely trying to mislead consumers to drive sales. — bwDraco 2 mins ago

2:01 AM
^^^ Are those SSDs (M.2) reliable?

Bob
How long is a piece of string?

2:31 AM
@PaulVargas relative to what? with what workload? if those are pics from your actual machine, it might be easier to give us the make and model instead

2:42 AM
@PaulVargas Generally very reliable but do be careful with heavy sustained loads. PCIe SSDs can get very hot and experience thermal throttling. Temperatures in excess of around 70–80 °C can lead to degraded performance.
The Plextor M6e isn't the fastest PCIe SSD out there (especially at 128 GB) but it certainly beats a SATA SSD any day. Besides, Plextor SSDs are generally known to be very reliable.
(I read the model number out: PX-G128M6e.)

Bob
@allquicatic The safe assumption is that no drive is reliable, in absolute terms.
A drive is only as reliable as the number of backups you have of the data on it.
There's no point trying to predict the lifespan, 'cause you're gonna get burned when you happen to get the outlier that dies after a week.

@Bob * the amount of backups of that you have spread out globally

Bob
At most, look at reliability statistics and specs to figure out how often you might have to replace a failed drive (or how much you might need to spend on replacements).
Not how long your data will survive on that drive.

3:25 AM
@PaulVargas All drives die
Death is inevitable.

I'm a big fan of backing up daily (to multiple places)
@bwDraco the question mentions that specific model and the answer references its specifications - there's nothing wrong with having your company name in your profile

Well, I just have to learn to not be so hard on this.

The answer is incorrect of course

I still need to learn not to be so harsh.
Anyway, sorry for the incorrect flag.
If in doubt, I guess I should consult a moderator in chat or use a custom mod attention flag (not a spam flag).
I still tend to be overzealous.

@bwDraco I think that you should still use regular flags BUT listen to what people have to say if you are wrong

I need to show good judgment and not overreact in edge cases.
Alright then. It's getting late here. Good night.

Bob
3:49 AM
@arda spam flags specifically have automatic consequences, so imo they really should only be used in blatantly obvious cases
hm, they changed the description

4:04 AM
in Ask a Super User Moderator, Nov 29 '14 at 22:32, by DragonLord
Treat every review and every problematic post you encounter as if your responses and actions had the impact of a full ♦moderator.
Still on the star wall in that room.

@Bob yeah, but it requires 5 flags.

Leveraging some of the changes and improvements made over the last few weeks, I'll be doing multi-perspective checks on most moderation actions, including close votes, flags, and delete votes.

@bwDraco Do, don't say.
cc @JourneymanGeek

These checks will be made:
- from the perspective of the post author,
- from the perspective of another user not directly involved,
- from the perspective of a moderator, and
- as if I was a moderator (e.g. actions are binding).
These will help ensure that overly harsh actions are not taken and unexpected effects are avoided, and so that users are given the benefit of the doubt as appropriate.

when you say that you'll do these, you raise expectations. This lowers appreciation in case you succeed and raises disappointment in case you fail.

4:13 AM
Good night.

night

I had a relatively rough day today which might explain this issue.

I totally understand :) As I said, I had the same happen to me
try not talking about it too much, and skip if you aren't sure
after having a rough day, try not to make too much decisions

1 hour later…
5:28 AM
@bwDraco There's nothing wrong with using your company name in your profile - in this case its a subject that the OP assumed he was expert in, referred to the question, and didn't actually link back to his product
and typically when I have rough days, I let the other mods know and go steal some socks game or watch TV or something ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Incidentally, running around blowing up tanks is rather cathartic :P

@Bob that's probably the best part of late game SR3
how else do you think I got so good at doing letting the enemy retreat towards me, while firing backwards off a tank? ;p
(also my pretty decent awareness once I've gotten used to a game... I'm getting more comfortable with payday 2 gun-physics)

Q: What are the alternatives to the FHS?

Björn LindqvistPlease don't crucify me for asking this question. :) I'm a long time Linux user for over 15 years but one thing I hate with a passion is the mandated directory structure. I don't like that /usr/bin is the dumping ground for binaries or libs in /usr/lib, /usr/lib32, /usr/libx32, /lib, /lib32 etc...

That sounds suspiciously like Windows :P

5:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek Duly noted; will make appropriate changes.
I'll be applying more wisdom in every decision going forward.

@Bob I am tempted to talk about the horror that is /apps/

I'm just torn here. I want to practice moderation and decision-making skills now, but I don't want to draw too much attention to myself...
Would it be okay if I posted several items from the review queues every day for discussion (perhaps in a new room dedicated for this purpose)?

@bwDraco that's demanding attention tho.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hm?
Come to think of it, macOS also does something similar.

@Bob ugh. What's those $foo variables called?
environment variables, right.

5:53 AM
So how do I practice moderation and smart decision making without drawing excessive attention?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek no idea what that has to do with /apps/ :S

I'd really like to fast-track progress, but I also want to minimize disruption.

@Bob /apps/ is what we used to use in my last workplace

Windows is yelling at me for not updating spyware protection :P

Bob
@JourneymanGeek o.O

5:54 AM
sigh

along with a horribly complicated startup script that would set dozens and dozens of environmental variables and symlinked specific versions of apps per projects with dependancies.

I'm strongly considering using the review queues, making decisions in cases I'd normally skip, but that involves considerable risk (due to the potential for making the wrong decision) and requires a lot of patience.
But practice makes perfect...
What a dilemma. I just feel like I'm stuck.
!!/extraheaddesk

@bwDraco Its worth considering. As a regular user mistakes are not the end of the world
Heck as a mod, I have the option of unlaterally undoing my messups. I have power but not necessarily concequence.

How would I ask for feedback on my decisions without drawing excessive attention or causing disruption?

5:59 AM
@bwDraco rely on the same mechanisms we do.

Perhaps use the other room?

See what happens with your flags and reviews.
In my case my review mechanism as a mod is meta.

Ah, well. I'll probably link to particularly hard reviews once in a while but will try to avoid overdoing it.

I'd much rather people linked to interesting questions
@Bob we basically had to maintain 3-4 different releases of commercial software + plugins + dependancies and every single project had its own environmental variables
and we had serious NIH
oh, and in some cases someone would ask something about a critical bit of software written by someone who had left the company years ago

I'll also be doing more and larger edits to improve content quality rather than chicken out and skip or hit Looks OK due to laziness.

6:05 AM
@bwDraco there is utterly nothing wrong with skipping

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I just link to funny ones :P

The whole point is to practice decision-making in edge cases. It's a key mod responsibility and something I've had a long history of trouble with.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek sounds familiar!

I'm also trying to practice patience.
Anyhoo, back to bed.

Q: how to run multiple commands at once on multiple server by running and exiting automaticaly?

ramendrai have a problem in running commands in sequence on terminal, see below scenario--- ssh ubuntu@123.234.234.321 (get root access) ssh 243.43.2.1 (to connect a system) sudo killall python (killing python on ssh 243.43.2.1) exit (exiting 243.43.2.1) ssh 567.563.65.3 (to connect a another system) su...

Bob
6:08 AM
"practice patience" & "fast-track changes" do not mesh

._. I'm convinced he's copy and pasting including the stuff in brackets.
lol. I find critical listening is nice for building patience ;)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek at least there's no rm -rf ~ there

also, I'm not completely sure that double barreled ssh command would work

Bob
only one way to find out!

I don't have three linux boxen ;p
Well I kinda do but I don't seem to remember where the key for my dedi is

6:13 AM
I'll start going through the queues with an emphasis on quality, rather than quantity (won't be trying to do the full 20 reviews a day in a hurry like I used to). My objectives have changed and the review process will reflect the new objectives.
Good night.

1 hour later…
7:31 AM
heh, I'm watching an early episode of b5... and 2 of the 3 actors on the screen are dead...
(granted the show has a ton of people who acted in it who've passed on)

Bob
8:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek daiso restocked FPs \o/
No ink though...

\o/
alas
oh yeah
@Bob next time we get into a fight with cops, see if they've dropped something called a quick shot pistol
It fires faster than the standard pistol but I don't think it does enough damage

Bob
@JourneymanGeek funnily enough this time I actually dropped in to look for glasses wipes... which were out of stock

Bob
Daiso pls

that's daiso ;p

8:31 AM
What's b5?
o0

babylon 5 ?

yup
Its my second favourite thing in the universe... ;p

8:51 AM
ooh space epic

lol
yeah
I believe my love for the show is referenced a lot here
Including "No boom today? Boom Tommorrow"
and "I don't watch TV..."

9:20 AM
I want to integrate a hardware with my iOS app which can read smart Cards ( 2D barcode and Magnetic Stripe) finally i have come crossed with 2 product InFinea ( ipcmobile.com/products/ios-peripherals/infinea-tab-4 ) manufactured by Infinite peripherals and IdWedgeBT ( tokenworks.com/products/idwedgebt ) manufactured by TokenWorks As both are fulfilling my requirement.
I am really confused which one is better and which one will provide me better service in order to integrate it with my app

@Anupam Oh, hello to you too.
What makes you think the folk here might have an answer?

@jou

Yes, you did manage to ping me.

@JourneymanGeek hello Thanks for replying me

We do sometimes advice people on hardware, but the site's primary for PC and other computer related things, and on chat software and hardware chat's heavily around consumer, not coder side things.

9:25 AM
I was searching where can I ask such question then I got an an Answer on SE and a guy suggested me to ask here thats y i did

ugh. Who?

this link made me ask this quest here meta.superuser.com/questions/6166/…

Now, there's a site specifically for hardware recommendations but rather than a A vs B question, a good question would talk about your needs "I need it to work with ios, and these apis" budget, geographical availability...
"computer hardware"
You're talking about a super specific requirement

Bob
Yea, I can't think of anyone here who'd have any idea about both smartcards and iOS :\
@Anupam The best thing to do here might be to read the feature lists, read the API docs, and pick whichever one you feel is better.

and holy shit those are pricy 0_0

Bob
9:30 AM
This is really an area quite far removed from typical consumer usage, and there doesn't seem to be many reviews/posts for these things.
@JourneymanGeek Welcome to business hardware!

(I started off grumpy, now I'm curious)

Bob
Oh, they just pretend to be a keyboard. bleh

> The problem we have had with all the readers is that the data from the mag reader to the iOS device is too fast for iOS to process and that is why I don't get a consistent read off the stripe.
@Bob I wonder how it would compare to something like a square

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Smartcard reader, not payment processor.

Ok I got your points Thanks @Bob and @JourneymanGeek just one more question could you please provide me link where can I ask hardware related question Thanks again.

Bob
9:34 AM
Or does Square do those too?

@Bob its still a magstripe no?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh? I thought it was for the chipped ones -_-

hardwarerecs.stackexchange.com is probably the right site. That said, you might want to take a look at what sort of information they want.
@Bob I think its purely magstripe and 'dumb'
which is why they can send them out cheap

Bob
@Anupam I think your problem here is you're asking about a very niche area... don't be too disappointed if you get no answers.
@JourneymanGeek Looks like the IDWedge thingo does chipped and maybe contactless cards too.

@Bob don't iphones do nfc?

Bob
9:37 AM
Though you could always just use the built-in NFC read- oh wait iPhone doesn't have those.
@JourneymanGeek NOPE

Bob
Technically it has the hardware.
But only Apple (Pay) can use it.
Unless you want to jailbreak anyway
at which point you might as well just get some Android devices

@Bob which would do everything but magstripes with the right devices...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hm?
Nah. Contactless is different from chip.
Though most smartcards are probably contactless.

camera for barcodes, nfc for contactless

Bob
9:39 AM
btw @JourneymanGeek youtube.com/watch?v=rgo-dYAgzSs :P
@JourneymanGeek Not barcodes. Chip.

@Bob lol. Amy Pond! I had a friend who allegedly sounded like her

Bob

@Bob ah, that would explain it costing as much as a fancy video card

they cost a few dollars but whatever

@Bob he's not doing those tho
he explicitly said magstripe

Bob
9:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yea, I'm just saying that reader does chip while the other doesn't

I'm pretty sure there's some loony with a magstripe card reader he bodged out of an old walkman and a paperclip
@Bob ahh

@JourneymanGeek squareup.com/reader

@arda I'm convinced that's a few dollars worth of hardware ;p

it is
in fact square sends it for free
(afterall you pay %2.75 of every sale you make with it)

I love you internet.
(In an entirely aromantic and asexual way)

Bob
9:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek Oh, so not Kinzie then? :P

@Bob I will never look at teacups the same way, ever again.
Also, I'd like to point out, she only says she does. Only Matt knows for certain out of the whole crew ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'll regret asking, but... teacups?

@Bob teacup!

Bob
You disgust me.
:P

@Bob I do disgust myself too.
you see, I only slept like 5 hours in the last 3 days

Bob
9:52 AM
Hm. I just found a fire extinguisher.

Speaking of which. @Bob I might end at 11ish if we play today... I had trouble waking up this morning, and I start work late this week ;p

Bob
Ah. k

I slept through an alarm

Bob
I'm just hunting for someting I bought on a whim two years ago.

and well, you know what my notification sounds are like...

Bob
9:55 AM
Found a stash of ethernet cables (20 cat6 of varying lengths)
and a fire extinguisher

nice?
lol
We have one in the kitchen

Bob
well, I managed to not awaken any demons
so I'll count that as a win

Never used it tho. Even the one time we actually DID set something on fire

Bob
@JourneymanGeek my parents don't believe in fire extinguishers apparently
so I keep my own

@Bob oh, it was apparently a requirement for our old office

9:57 AM
@Bob cat6? wasn't ethernet cables cat5? Am I missing something?

I don't know what happened to the other two we bought
@arda there's cat 6

other than sleep
@JourneymanGeek ah

cat 5e is the minimum for gigabit, cat 6/6a is better and can be use for up to 10GBASE-T

Bob
also the cat6 was cheaper at the time
$2.20 for 3m

nice

Bob
10:02 AM
Of course, before the purchase I needed lots. After, I didn't need any. So, pile in the closet.
There's another order somewhere but cbf digging up the invoice.

of course ;p
like me and mini/micro USB cables ;p
and I do have more USB C cables than I expected

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I have a drawer full of micro ones too
The only reason I don't have a million USB-C ones is cause the last order was shipped out a month late (and still missing the charger itself...)

I left a huge box of random cables in NL. I haven't missed any of them (yet).

Bob
hopefully it arrives within the next week, then I need to chase up the charger...

10:34 AM
@DavidPostill Usually, whenever I throw away some ancient cable, I need it soon after. The less likely it is that I will need it ever again before I throw it away, the more likely I am to need it right after

@OliverSalzburg Lol. That's probably true. In my case I haven't actually thrown them away yet. They are kind of in storage. Just very inaccessible. I suppose if I actually threw them away I would need them :)

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Heh. Need before you buy, don't need after, need after you toss them out.
@JourneymanGeek 1hr?

10:56 AM
@Bob Sounds about right :D

11:07 AM
apparently macos is a linux distro now.

"No, Don't use the great big concrete hook. Use the bolt. Its too.... damnit"
"Strapping that pipe to the wall is dumb. AND HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO CONNECT IT TO THE EXISTING BOLT STICKING OUT THE WALL?"
goes make a bracket for it
with nothing more than a dremel and random daiso bits I might add
I think I got the pipe on the wall until it collapses again killing everyone in the area....
@Bob right. Good to go whenever

12:49 PM
Hello!

Hello!

Hello!

@arda not even that; neither Mac OS X nor Linux "use" UNIX in any way. Solaris does, but the others don't. They implement standards (de facto or formal standards) that make them behave somewhat similarly in userspace to a certain degree, but that's where the comparison ends.

@allquicatic Oh, and they have similar names...

12:52 PM
to "use" UNIX, you have to share some source code with UNIX. The most popular currently-maintained OS that shares source code with UNIX is Solaris. Though I think HP-UX also does and it's technically "extant".... barely

We don't advertise prescription drugs here in India...

@Rahul2001 I bet you have plenty of other unwanted ads to make up for it though :)

@DavidPostill You'd be surprised, but we don't get a lot of stupid adds
There is a fair amount of repetition though
I'm going to be an Established User on SU!
