1:00 PM
@Rahul2001 Is this on TV or some other advertising media?

@DavidPostill TV
And other mediums too

I never turned on a TV while in the US.
I did buy extra books though when I ran out of the ones which I brought with me

Books are awesome!
2

The only reason I watch TV is because my mobile tethering data allowance is so crap ...

The only drugs you usually see advertisements for on Indian TV for are those which help with indigestion :P

1:07 PM
I hate adverts. TV, print, internet or any other place. They are intrusive, full of unjustified claims or just poorly made. TV ads are the worst. Minute text at the bottom along the lines of "95% of customers from a sample of 100" agree with us. As if 100 people is a representative sample of anything.

how 2 exit bash...? eg, I open bash to run a script, how do I tell bash to kill itself after? is EOF a command xD

Ugh. Verify my 4x1TB RAID 5 array almost took 2 hours. (at 91% now)

If I want to buy something I will go and look for it myself.

exit

1:08 PM
logoff
I think both will work

exit just tested on bash on my FreeBSD host.
$ logoff
logoff: not found
$

thank you so much Hennes xD
try logout

Uh. I tend to control-D by default. Much less typing :)
And I have set ignoreEof to 0

Right now in the UK we have 3 different websites advertising they can all guarantee the lowest price for a hotel room. At least two of them must be lying.
It's all fancy graphics and spin :/

1:10 PM
I pray to god it works.

@DavidPostill I view advertisements as a way to make me aware of a business. I will ignore everything about an ad except for the fact that the company advertising exists. Then if I have any interest at all in the product they're selling, I'll go do my own independent research.

hotel? trivago!

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Yep. That's the main culprit.

there have been several times when I have been unaware that a company exists, then I'll hear an ad, then I'll need something at some point and will research the company, find out their product is pretty good, and have a good consumer experience
if they didn't advertise I'd have more difficulty knowing where to go for whatever I needed, though granted, with Google-fu, it can't be that hard
but it's mostly for local businesses that it's hard to find them without an ad. so I kind of like the radio ads on the local sports radio station

1:12 PM
for major multinationals, google is usually sufficient

@allquicatic That's great. But does it have to be in your face while you are watching a TV drama?

No, but that uis why we do not use live TV stream anymore.

how are you Rahul?

I haven't been in the US for a while, but last time I was the US ads were even worse than UK.

1:13 PM
Just timeshift and skip across all the ads.

I dont like us ads either, I see them sometimes when watching the american channel

@Hennes That's exactly what I did in NL. Current circumstances mean I can't do that.

just record the channel and watch half an hour later than live

I used two VCRs. One to watch. One to record.

@DavidPostill I actually don't mind ads on television or radio, since most of the time when I'm watching those, there's no sort of limit to how often or how long I can watch, and I'm usually wasting time in that scenario anyway, so might as well waste it letting my brain go soggy

1:15 PM
@Hennes I had a DVR which could record 2 channels. And you could still watch TV ...

I really, really hate ads on the Internet, though, mainly because all of my day-to-day Internet connections at work and home are dog slow, and I don't need them further slowed down (and eating up my limited-unlimited data at home) by ads

I only had two regulars. One whioch played NTSC tapes.

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I'm fine... What about you?

Which mean some borrowed anime tapes worked.

Afternoon, all!
Oh wait
Shit, it's only morning

1:16 PM
@Rahul2001 Vox is awesome; there's something about the cleanliness of their presentation that makes it appealing, and it's explanatory without being clickbait

oh allquicatic, I use a anti tracking browser addon and msvps hosts file and I never see ads, you should try it out

@allquicatic Yeah, I love it too

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I use uBlock, which is far superior to a hosts file

Anyway, that's enough ranting. When circumstances change I will be free of ads ... :)

@allquicatic @Dog is not slow!
2

1:17 PM
oh my superiority xD

@varfirstName you're right, he's a pretty quick learner actually

LOL
Dog has arrived

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere what extension do you use? Ghostery?

Dog
@allquicatic Woof

(I used to use Ghostery, until I realized that uBlock makes it redundant, since, everything that Ghostery blocks, uBlock blocks)

1:18 PM
Somebody is lurking. As soon as their name is mentioned they appear ...

I argue against. uBlock is not superior as it is a browser addon. a hosts file blocks at request level across all applications, not just the browser
oh okay cool

No, David; Dog was not lurking, he got a notification in his inbox

@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere that would be relevant if you were using applications that displayed advertisements other than your web browser; indeed... however I don't really know of any apps I use on a daily basis that display (unwanted) ads besides a web browser :)

Dog
@Hennes Just wait till you have to verify a 4x10TB RAID-5 array
(You'll be lucky if that completes in a day)
@varfirstName Actually i Just gout ot of bed

1:19 PM
Steam displays ads for games I might be interested in, but funnily enough, I eagerly consume those ads while often jumping with excitement

@Dog I need clarification, what is RAID-#?

Dog
RAID (originally redundant array of inexpensive disks, now commonly redundant array of independent disks) is a data storage virtualization technology that combines multiple physical disk drive components into a single logical unit for the purposes of data redundancy, performance improvement, or both. Data is distributed across the drives in one of several ways, referred to as RAID levels, depending on the required level of redundancy and performance. The different schemas, or data distribution layouts, are named by the word RAID followed by a number, for example RAID 0 or RAID 1. Each schema, or...

my favorite ads in the world: launch Steam -> pop-up showing me a list of games I might want to buy / check out

Dog
@allquicatic My favourite email ads: Emails from steam saying a game in my wishlist is 75% 0ff!

1:20 PM
or this on on SF
145
Q: What are the different widely used RAID levels and when should I consider them?

MDMarra This is a Canonical Question about RAID levels. What are: the RAID levels typically used (including the RAID-Z family)? deployments are they commonly found in? benefits and pitfalls of each?

@Dog oh hell yes

@Dog I use IFTTT for that :)
If only you could upvote upvotes in order to increase their significance

A 4x10TB RAID-5 array does not make sense in a lot of places.
Neither does 4x 1TB except when you do not care about URE after disk failure
In my case I never intend to restore. If a disk fails I'll dump the disk.

Dog
@Hennes A 4xanything RAID-5 does not make sense :-P

1:27 PM
Most servers use 6-12 bays

Dog
OK maybe a bit of an exaggeration
Ideal RAID-5 layouts would consist of 2^n + 1 disks

That means an odd number of disks
computers don't like odd numbers
WAIT

my dedi at OVH has 2 x 2 TB HDD and 2 x 480 GB SSD and I use ZFS for software RAID-1 with the SSDs used as a read and write cache... at home I do something similar, but since it's Windows I have to use a hardware RAID card... and 2 x 8 TB HDD + 2 x 1 TB SSD (850 Pro) with an Adaptec 81605ZQ

Dog
It means an even number of data disks

it's been a long time since I've tried RAID-5

1:29 PM
@Dog How does that work?
@Dog 2^n is even
+ 1 makes it odd
but 2^0 + 1 is even

Dog
In computer storage, the standard RAID levels comprise a basic set of RAID (redundant array of independent disks) configurations that employ the techniques of striping, mirroring, or parity to create large reliable data stores from multiple general-purpose computer hard disk drives (HDDs). The most common types are RAID 0 (striping), RAID 1 and its variants (mirroring), RAID 5 (distributed parity), and RAID 6 (dual parity). RAID levels and their associated data formats are standardized by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) in the Common RAID Disk Drive Format (DDF) standard. While...

Nailed it
or wait

@varfirstName minimum number of disks for RAID-5 is 3

do you mean 2^(n + 1)

Dog
@allquicatic Windows does software RAID-1 and RAID-5 now sorta

1:30 PM
(2^n) + 1 where n >= 1

pssshhh

@Dog not as well as ZFS, and not with SSDs of arbitrary size as a read/write cache

you're no fun

Dog
@allquicatic True. Not sure how storage spaces' tiering/caching works tbh

also I'd like to see some lower overhead protocol besides SATA (maybe PCIe NVME, maybe SAS) for reducing CPU overhead, before I jump to software RAID on a desktop where I need every last cycle for simulation games

Dog
1:31 PM
A hardware card is also more portable, if you ever need to run/install Linux on the same disks

if ReFS becomes a bootable FS in the future it might become a valid ZFS replacement for the way I use ZFS and can chuck the hardware RAID card
@Dog which I already do, dual booting with UEFI selecting which OS to boot into :P

Dog
@allquicatic TBH my solution for that these days is ADD MOAR COREZ

boot up and press F12 and select Ubuntu in the boot menu if I want it, otherwise defaults to Windows

@allquicatic how do you stop your BIOS from selecting a partition automatically?

@Dog too expensive and difficult in a desktop where I'm somewhat size-conscious (using Micro-ATX)... they don't have 6+ core EP platforms in Micro ATX, do they?! O_O

Dog
1:33 PM
Hey weren't you the one who said most games don't use more than 2-3 cores anyway?

@varfirstName default is to boot up into the Windows UEFI; if I press F12 I can pick Ubuntu

Dog
@allquicatic Kaby lake is rumoured to be bringing 4 cores into 15w laptop platforms, so who knows!

@Dog it's true, but I play games that aren't "most games" (like KSP)
@Dog actually... wait... I recall actually seeing online a Broadwell-EP Micro ATX board

@allquicatic I wouldn't be surprise if someone wrote an OS for selecting boot OSes

Dog
I thought KSP was still practically single-thread perf limited
@allquicatic Also Xeon-D but that has low per-core speeds

1:34 PM
you kinda suffer with the PCIe slots compared to full ATX, but you can stuff a 6 or 8-core desktop CPU in there
@Dog yeah, definitely no Xeon-D for my workload

and of course exit did not work @Hennes haha

@varfirstName the UEFI firmware works just fine >_>

Dog
I currently have a MicroATX board with a i5 4570 in there IIRC (swapped for my Skylake 6700K)
I haven't actually used it yet tbh

@allquicatic but then I have to press F12 to change OS

Dog
It's just... my skylake system was the size of a suitcase and weighed 25kg.

1:35 PM
25kg? What is that in lbs?

Dog
And when you're homeless and moving about a lot, a MicroATX case that weighs barely 8kg is far better, even if you lose performance

50.5?

1:36 PM
shit I'm stupid
3

Metric FTW!

55 lbs
shit, that's heavy

@Dog yeah, I have a Corsair MicroATX case of some sort that weighs 25 pounds fully loaded, designed to be lifted into a car with minimal effort -- it's about half as heavy as my old full ATX mid-tower

cause 0.2 is 1/5 and 25 / 5 = 5 so I assume 2 * 25 = 50 + 1/5th of 25 whicbh is 5

1:36 PM
11.3 kg

Yea, I catch you

> Corsair Carbide Series CC-9011070-WW Black Steel / Plastic MicroATX Mid Tower Air 240 High Airflow MicroATX and Mini-ITX PC Case

Dog
I think this one was EVGA or something. My flatmate's old PC.
I haven't actually weighed it, but it's light enough to easily lift with two fingers, so...

I was tempted to go Mini-ITX but you lose even more PCIe slots and half your RAM slots... no can do ;_;

Dog
Ah evga hadron
Wait that might be mini itx

1:38 PM
which one of you favorited my message?

Dog
Ah crap, it is

!!s/favorited/starred/

@varfirstName which one of you starred my message? (source)

@varfirstName spartacus

Dog
Meh, it's just a temporary system until I can buy a Skylake-E (or have a home, whichever comes later)

1:39 PM
Shit. Yall are mean t-t
but i love yall anyway o3o

@Dog Skylake-E in Micro ATX would be incredible. IMO

Dog
@allquicatic Eh, I'll probably move back to full-ATX at that point

nah, pony up for one or two 16 TB SSDs and you won't need spinning rust or many disks :P
come on, admit it, you want convergence
entire digital life in one box

Dog
I still have my old E-ATX/EEB/CEB case in storage

does asking how to config some software allowed on the current topics?

1:41 PM
@skeith on superuser.com, or in chat here?

Dog
@allquicatic Sure I want convergence... once I can have a fully reliable ZFS system on Windows maybe...

here

basically anything's on-topic in here (as long as it's not offensive) :P ask away
@Dog or ReFS (boot) :P

anyone familiar with squid proxy config?
the acl part

I mean, when you look at APFS from Apple, ReFS from Microsoft, and Btrfs from Oracle / FOSS community, everybody is basically copying ZFS.

1:43 PM
acl dictates I must specify a client
but I want to allow all
by default If i set no acl, it's denying all

COW, cryptographically secure integrity hashes on all blocks, instant snapshotting, online chkdsk / fsck, software RAID implemented in the FS...

I'm currently moving all my data from my file server into Amazon Drive

hard disks are OP okay. I opened one up and wrote data to it and read stuff from it while the cover was off with dust fluttering onto the disk, and it pulled through

Let them care about disks ;P

@skeith can you post the relevant part of your config, or all of it? if it's a lot, you can use pastebin or similar
it's been a while since I've dabbled with that... but can probably find relevant docs

1:44 PM
currently I am modifying default config

also, IIRC, squid's configuration has changed a ton depending on which version you're running

so it's all still pristine as the default
acl made me stuck

and some distros (Debian and Ubuntu, I'm looking at you) customize the default config by a lot

< using Ubuntu

so we need your squid version and what distro and version you're using

Dog
1:46 PM
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Me too, but Ramhound downvotes me anytime I mention it's possible

*downvotes Dog*

Squid Cache: Version 3.3.8
Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS

honestly I even moved the head around while the disk was spinning and it somehow didnt lose the data, it probably didnt hit the disk surface, or out of sheer luck it didnt hit the right sectors

as why do I need to allow all clients, because my IP is dynamic. I know I can use some service such as no-ip
but it's terrible

1:50 PM
@skeith so, let me try to understand your setup: you're on a typical home router/modem with a dynamic IP and you're trying to set up (through port forwarding) a public-facing squid proxy that exposes itself to the public Internet?

tried using no-ip when shoutcast was a thing, not working
yes,
that public facing squid will have auth
it will be open to all client, but it will ask auth

@skeith what's your plan for authentication? please don't say basic auth
you should at least do digest auth behind (mandatory) TLS with a certificate that your client will trust... though, without a domain name and with a changing IP, I'm not sure how your client will know how to trust the cert

hello,
I want to use "SFML" for my school computer, and my school computer doesn't support VS2013, so i will use code::blocks, but i don' t know how to check the compiler version for code::blocks, i found one post on this site but it didn't help, so any idea how to check compiler version of code::blocks 13.12 ?

^ you got me
i was trying to use apache2-utils
the user of that proxy will only be me

Man, gotta love yahoo answers...

1:53 PM
and i have no intention of disclosing it to public user

@skeith plus any random Chinese/Russian/Eastern European botnet that port scans your IP and happens to notice an open port taking a weak authentication method...

^ true

IPv4:all ports is a very small address space to scan; 32 bits (with a very large number of IPs that can be eliminated because they're either already scanned or are part of private subnets) multiplied by 16 bits

so, acl mandatory is there to make my server safe right

@allquicatic how is NLTM for auth?

1:55 PM
@varfirstName not ideal; even the latest version of NTLM is pretty easy to trick over the public Internet... but better than basic (though he'd still have to set up a daemon that could speak that protocol, which is harder than doing digest auth with TLS)

wait, can I instead of allowing all, allow my ISP ip range?
that should be safer right?

actually if you entirely eliminate passwords and just use both client and server TLS certificates, that's pretty rock-solid security-wise.
you should definitely just allow all IPs and do not use ACLs as a means of authentication (IPs can be spoofed relatively easily)
IPs are not authentication; authentication is authentication :)

@allquicatic Don't you still need to find a way to make the certs work with a changing IP?

@varfirstName dynamic DNS should work... if the access method to get into the dynamic DNS system is secure

@allquicatic Would you recommend OAuth for this fellow?

Dog
1:58 PM
Hosts file! Lol

@varfirstName OAuth? O_o I'm not even sure how you would set that up from the squid-side. Besides, I can only really recommend things I myself know how to do :)
and things I know how to do definitely includes bidirectional TLS certificate exchange and verification, but excludes stuff like NTLM and OAuth :P

< this fellow has only basic knowledge of computer and surface knowledge of linux

I'm a .NET guy, so I might not be that helpful with this
I'll leave it to you low level pros

@skeith what's your goal? to get into your home network from work, or are you just trying to bypass a restrictive proxy at work?

maybe, I'll just learn more things before i enable this squid
