@Bob What state? Did you follow the back-ref on that discussion? Psycogeek asked a general question, and the linked superuser question happened to have just gone by so I was pointing it out as an example of my answer.

Bob
@Caleb Your half-broken BIOS/UEFI.
(note: it's UEFI, not EUFI. and EFI is the old version- I think that one was first adopted by Macs and may still be used by them)
!!wiki UEFI

The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) (pronounced as an initialism U-E-F-I or like "unify" without the n) is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. UEFI is meant to replace the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) firmware interface, present in all IBM PC-compatible personal computers. The original EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) specification was developed by Intel. Some of its practices and data formats mirror ones from Windows. In 2005, UEFI deprecated EFI 1.10 (final release of EFI). The UEFI specification is ...

The pine powder moth or converged powder moth (Eufidonia convergaria) is a species of moth of the Geometridae family. It is found from Newfoundland to British Columbia and the northwestern parts of the United States. The wingspan is 22–30 mm. The moth flies from May to July depending on the location. The larvae feed on Pinus species, including white pine, lodgepole pine, and jack pine. External links *[http://www.forestpests.org/caterpillars/pinepowdermoth.cfm Larval Stage info]

@Bob How did I get it half broken? I flashed it with the built in EZ-Flash utility which rebooted the system when it was "done" and when it came back had eaten its head.

Bob
9:02 PM
@Caleb Ah. So not a power outage or similar?

@Bob No.

Bob
I've been lucky enough to have my UEFI updates succeed, but they're always scary as hell :\

The only oddity was that the first time I tried to flash it rejected the file with some error about couldn't verify its security. I repeat try actually made it go, but left it borked. I have a feeling it was borked to begin with, but it's kind of hard to put my finger on.

@Bob I've explicitly not updated my UEFI since installing my mobo for this precise reason. I just don't want to even deal with it. It works right now, and for all I know it may be solid like the roman aqueducts, or it might be like a tower from a game of drunken jenga... I don't want to find out.
I want to update it, but I just can't bring myself to it...

Bob
@JimmyHoffa My last update on my desktop was so risky - had somewhat dirty power at the time and didn't have a UPS yet.

9:07 PM
WHAT IN HELLS JUST HAPPENED
He's staring at me...*what is going on right now??*

Bob
@JimmyHoffa ...I can't help but read that as a weird pickup line.

It's not april 1st... I don't understand reality right now...
Really, can someone explain this to me? What is clippy doing on my screen?

Bob
@JimmyHoffa Oh? Don't you know about Clippy? O.O
You've been in this chat for a while...
@Caleb Might try taking out the video card (use the onboard) or at least change the PCIe slot.

@Bob of course I know about clippy, he and his dog sidekick which would search my hard drive years ago were the but of many jokes, but most of all he was just a really hyper feller that wanted to help me so badly I presume he killed himself because he eventually disappeared never to be seen again...untill now

Q: What Easter Eggs do the chat sites have?

MosheAccording to balpha, the SE chat sites may have individual Easter eggs, depending on the site. If you find them, please post. Edit: Because it's so easy to make this stuff up, a screenshot as proof would be nice. (Although Photoshop ain't that hard either...)

@Caleb Are you able to use Flashback? => event.asus.com/2012/mb/USB_BIOS_Flashback_GUIDE

9:18 PM
Hi there

@Overflowh Yo

I have a strange problem (well, actually not only one) with my Lip ( Lubuntu live with persistance): when I open the laptop after it's has been closed for a while (not shutdown, really close, physically closing) sometimes the wifi stops working. On the reopening, the blue LED on the wifi button is turned off (become orange = turned off) and I cannot turn it on. Neither pressing the button or flagging the option Enable network functionalities works.
Does anyone have an idea about how to solve this problem?

Sometimes I just shouldn't say things that pop into my head.

@JimmyHoffa Yeah I tried both olive oil and holy incense. Didn't work..

@Bob It doesn't have onboard VGA, but I did try a different video card. No change.

Bob
9:32 PM
@Caleb try a different slot

@Bob Trying now, I have to put my BIOS EEPROM chip back in first...

Bob
o.o
@Caleb Removable BIOS? Nice.
Consider buying a replacement

@Bob I have a couple Rasberry Pi's floating around, it looks like one should be able to rig one up to use as an external flasher using flashrom. Unfortunatly I don't have a breadboard or any wiring handy.
@Bob Same result.

@Caleb To be fair, an eeprom flasher is likely not of particularly different price than the bobbles used to make one

The problem in that thread is different though, that's for not getting any video at all on POST. I'm getting video just fine including 3d accell if I get the boot process rigged to get into anything.

Bob
9:39 PM
@JimmyHoffa If the chip itself is only $15, may as well buy it and be done with it
@Caleb Yea, just something worth a shot.

@Bob I would guess a flasher is $20-30...
and that's like buying infinite chips at that point

@JimmyHoffa Probably right. But where am I going to get an EEPROM flasher? I vote you go to the Turkish computer parts pazar and ask around. I'll have dinner hot when you tire of trying to explain.

Bob
@JimmyHoffa unless you expect it to happen again...
@Caleb get one shipped? iunno
O.O
I was looking up my own mobo's details
> Compared to common motherboard which need extra BIOS chips, MSI’s M-Flash has a double advantage which doesn’t need extra components and secondly, all your BIOS data will be saved in the USB drive. The stored data does not only have backup and upgrade function, moreover it can also be seen as a portable BIOS chip which is actually able to boot up your PC.
wtf
using a flash drive as... what??

I'd be glad to pay $20-$30, although since I have a Pi in hand and know where to get my hands on stuff to connect it, I might try that first.

@Bob These need to be soldered back?

Bob
9:42 PM
@Boris_yo Depends on the mobo. Apparently his one is just a DIP socket.

@Bob And those that need to be soldered back, one must have proper equipment and heat it up on high temperature?

@Boris_yo Mine doesn't take any soldering. It's a removable chip, I just had it out with a spudger in no time and stuck it back in to test something else.

Bob
> WARNING!!!!!

DON'T FLASH WHEN YOUR SYSTEM IS RUNNING FINE!!!!

DON'T FLASH IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!!
Very reassuring, MSI.

@Bob Also don't flash when your system is NOT running fine, good way to brick it...
;)

9:55 PM
Hello guys I don't know if this is the right place but can someone confirm my thinking? "HTTP status code 2xx-3xx is success, 4xx-5xx is error?" I want to check whether a site is working or not.
So if it returns 2xx-3xx is working fine and if it returns 4xx-5xx is not working?

...lmgtfy :P $15-$30 for USB eeprom flashers from all over, ebay seems a prime place

Bob
@xoemab depends on the site.
A site could return anything it likes.
I could decide to 301 or 302 to an error page.
It could return a 200 and show an error page
depends what you consider 'working'
@JimmyHoffa apparently you can use the MB itself as an eeprom flasher O.O
boot off good BIOS, swap the BIOSes while the system is running, flash, reboot

@Bob I understood your thinking.. thank you

@Bob Srsly?
t I'm not sure I want to be the one messing around with that. Also I don't have a matching board with a working bios handy.
Although a shop that had one around might be easier to find than a flasher.

@Caleb hmm that explains the missing chips off the demo boards at the store :-)

10:01 PM
I just dug up a FDD cable that it looks I can rig up on the Pi in lieu of a breadboard...

Bob
@Caleb (some places sell them - hence my $15 comment earlier)
heh

@Psycogeek Familiar with Agenda 21?

Bob
my motherboard's bios is soldered on :(

@Bob Every bit??
That's some crazy soldering man.

Bob
what?

Bob
???

@Bob The migration must have been confusing on you, that's to be expected.

@Bob Yup. We did that once with a pair of Asus P2D-S. Never again. (it worked though)

10:27 PM
meta.stackoverflow.com/a/208492/135565 the stuff I do for swag ;p

@Hennes It actually works? Cool.
(I wish I could do that)

Q: Stack Overflow returning HTTP error code 418 (I'm a teapot)?

caesayFirst a little background: I recently wrote a reverse proxy which I have found to work wonderfully so far, and being an avid Stack Overflow user, I thought I would try it out there. I was just playing around and everything was working perfectly, until I hit one page that suddenly returned HTT...

@Bob Did you not know about error code 418?

Bob
@JimmyHoffa I new about the code. Didn't know SE used it.

(it's largely an actually implemented error code, surprisingly)
wait uses or implements ?
hah they do. That's great.

Bob
11:17 PM
@JourneymanGeek Apparently a poodle/beagle mix ^

11:40 PM
Someone wants a treat

@Bob: o0
looks very terrier ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, other people in that thread say it looks like a westie :P
(also, apparently it got detected by this guy's xbox one as him)

@Bob: yeah
@Bob: oh gee, how would that happen ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Dunno, but at least that means you can probably use one ;)

@Bob: ;p

@Boris_yo Agenda 21 yes, natural rights for all species sponcored by UN, requires re-working 99% of infrastructure, good for all species cept humans. Started long ago, like many things, not much of it done, scares humans, as it should.
@Boris_yo General use of it so far, is applied in a manner like many things, applied by rich powerfull and government to rob from the poor, tax them to death, and control thier lives. Has done nothing for any other species :-) its working exactally as planned .
