Yeah, i think the green one there is exactly the bike I saw.
Aug 27, 2019 17:08
I think the bike builder mostly said he did it because he could, but it also made dealing with flats easier.
Aug 27, 2019 17:06
I remember seeing a bike at NAHBS when it was local several years back that was set up almost that way, but it was the left side that was open and right side had stays.

@CristianCiupitu @gschenk Interesting video that kind of shows difference between sunscreen and sunblock by using a UV camera: youtube.com/watch?v=GRD-xvlhGMc (the terms are very much not consistently used, and there's also a whole "chemical" definition used, but basically one reflects and the other absorbs)
Jun 5, 2019 01:52
@Criggie Schwalbe G-One is a "Gravel"/"Allround" tire. Schwalbe One (no G) is pure road.
May 27, 2019 19:24
@Swifty And... answered, I think...
May 8, 2019 17:38
I think "Are cameras a good way to bring reckless drivers to justice?" is adequately on-topic and reasonably answerable by some of our users.
May 8, 2019 17:37
@DavidD If you want to ask some questions like that, you should probably just write whole new questions.
Jan 18, 2019 00:06
@Criggie That looks interesting (looks like it's now called "Elevate for Strava").
Jan 5, 2019 00:03
@Criggie So, when a synonym is created, it basically changes all future use of the synonym to the main ("lead") tag. As mods, we would probably also want to perform a tag merge (rename all existing uses of the synonym to the main tag, or remove it it both tags are already on a question).
Jan 4, 2019 23:52
It's a community-specific term that not all cycling communities are familiar with.

Q: Do we need a Clydesdale/Athena tag

RoboKarenIn cycling, we use the terms Clydesdale or Athena to identify riders who are a few sigmas above the mean in terms of weight. I’m surprised we don’t have these tags. There is a tag “heavy” but many Clydesdale and Athena riders find this term (as well as the f*t word) to be pejorative. The only ...

Jan 4, 2019 23:27
@gschenk "Clyde" is short for "Clydesdale" and means a heavy cyclist.
Dec 4, 2018 21:17
@Hosch250 It's actually done by ranking the candidates.
Dec 4, 2018 21:16
(I'm not sure exactly which vote counting method they're using, but 51% had Criggie down as first choice)
Dec 4, 2018 21:15
Congratulations, @Criggie!

Let's see... 32,380 km... Call it about $1700 for the bike... Plus... uhm... at least a dozen chains, a few cassettes, lots of tires... a couple wheels... I think I'm probably at a bit over 10 cents per km.
Nov 28, 2018 04:40
Hmmm... wonder what my cost per km is...
Nov 27, 2018 01:30
@Criggie I don't think it'll ever happen, but it's certainly something a lot of Californians contemplate.
Nov 26, 2018 21:49
And, yeah, California is also a really big state with a really big population. There's both big populated urban and suburban areas (multiple big metro areas around LA and SF), and big wild areas, with stuff where there's areas that people live right next to the wild stuff, even right in it, or smaller communities in the middle of otherwise wild areas.
Nov 26, 2018 21:46
Oh, there's also some areas that get a summer (and fall) wind pattern of hot dry winds some years. With convoluted terrain that can make that worse.
Nov 26, 2018 21:45
Then rain and sun really help get you lots of undergrowth in the forested areas and grass in grassy areas, but heat waves dry a lot of it out.
Nov 26, 2018 21:44
So, many many tons of dead trees.
Nov 26, 2018 21:43
Oh, also a bunch of stuff with pine beetles, sudden oak death, etc...
Nov 26, 2018 21:43
@DeletedUser Bit more than that, even... (1) A lot of big trees (like literally the biggest trees in the world) growing for hundreds of years here. (2) Most of California has experienced severe drought for quite a few years, (3) (your first), a very rainy 2016/2017 rain season (enough to officially end drought in many areas), (4) summer 2017 had multiple major heat waves, (5) and then again 2018 had major heat waves.
Nov 26, 2018 02:26
I literally rode my bike into rainforest earlier today.
Nov 26, 2018 02:26
@Criggie NorCal is normally actually wet, but there's been years of drought lately.
Nov 26, 2018 00:48
California's climate has always had some fires naturally, but climate change has really increased them.
Nov 26, 2018 00:47
@RoryAlsop Except for fires and amazing amounts of pollen, air quality is always good where I live.
Nov 25, 2018 04:19
It's very rare for any kind of urban or suburban home around here to be purely wood only (and I think it's straight up banned to include a fireplace in a new home now). It's mostly rural homes that are purely wood heated.
Nov 25, 2018 04:18
California got fairly serious about air quality a few decades ago. The SF Bay Area has an "air quality management district" that declares both summer and winter "spare the air days". When one of those is active in winter, it's illegal to burn wood unless it's your home's only source of heat.
Nov 25, 2018 04:11
@Criggie I live 140 miles from the recent norcal fires (and right in the middle of where the worst california fire was a year ago), so... for a couple of weeks... air filter in house (smoke-rated filter in the furnace), minimal outdoor activity, basic disposable N95 mask for brief outdoor activities, and when I got fed up with inactivity, full respirator thing (P100+organic vapor) for ride to work.
Nov 24, 2018 21:49
I had no idea fairbanks had such bad air quality...
Nov 24, 2018 21:48
I figured organic vapor filtering was a very nice addition, especially for being out in the smoke for hours of heavy breathing.
Nov 24, 2018 21:48
Yeah, the fine particulate is most important to filter out.
Nov 24, 2018 21:47
Anyways... we got a bunch of rain this week and air quality is good again. Yay! :)
Nov 24, 2018 21:47
Oh, and if I'd gone with particulate only filters, those were included (and super-cheap). Those cartridges are P100 (tiny particles) and organic vapors, because I was being super-conservative about it.
Nov 24, 2018 21:45
I can ride without prescription, but I do prefer those...
Nov 24, 2018 21:45
Full face mask versions were about $100... Goggles made to fit with the masks are only like $20 or so, I think.
Nov 24, 2018 21:44
Yeah, mask was like $20-30 and the pair of those cartridges was another $20.
Nov 24, 2018 21:44
The glasses stayed on fine (oakley prescription), but they either had to sit higher up or further forward than they really should.
Nov 24, 2018 21:43
Definitely got a bit of irritation and was kinda wishing I'd gone for full mask or goggles or something...
Nov 24, 2018 21:42
Also, there was no good way to get my glasses to sit, so airflow to the eyeballs was an issue.
Nov 24, 2018 21:41
@DeletedUser I did my morning commute (50 minutes) a couple times in that. Airflow is fine for moderate pace. Basically it requires a bit of extra effort to breath compared to without it and that's just too much effort at higher speeds.
Nov 24, 2018 02:08
Original design has circles that extend out of the header and into the side area a bit; I'm pretty sure that's going away permanently.
Nov 24, 2018 02:07
Tags change look a bit, for instance.
Nov 24, 2018 02:07
@Criggie I noticed other differences, and I think they can continue the cyan down the sides.
