How's it going everyone?
AIQ
Sep 11, 2022 23:42
is it 24 hours per week or 26 hours per week?
AIQ
Sep 11, 2022 23:41
Something's been irritating me. What's the correct answer? If I worked for 48 hours from Mar-16-2022 to Mar-31-2022, what is the average hours I worked in a week?

@zmike Oh nice congrats!!! Everything is going well! I started mine in April, so almost 6 months now ...

From what I've learnt, resumes are a very personal thing, your style and wording is personal to you, if someone asks you to follow a stock resume that they are following, then don't.
AIQ
Apr 19, 2022 05:02
I'd avoid doing that. Unless you want to be helpful, there's not point creating a perpetual war of correcting each others negligible errors
AIQ
Apr 19, 2022 05:01
lol

If he has made lots of suggestions and done so thoroughly, I'd thank him for his time.
AIQ
Apr 19, 2022 05:00
My suggestion would be to let it go this time so you don't ruin the working relationship. But for next time, just be a little more conservative when people ask for your resume like this.
AIQ
Apr 19, 2022 04:55
Personally, I've also asked very experienced people to critique my resume - my supervisors, my professors, and some senior folks here ...
AIQ
Apr 19, 2022 04:54
You say he's pretty fresh out of undergrad - Does he have industry/job experience or is his resume advice/critique based on what he learnt from his university career coach? And also, if he is fresh out of college, why is he reviewing your resume?
AIQ
Apr 19, 2022 04:51
@Max He wanted to introduce you to someone who's been working in a job similar to one that you accepted - OK, but why would he ask for your resume to introduce you to them and why'd you give it?

@motosubatsu Hey! Yes, I've started the job, in my third week.

@motosubatsu Hey!

@Old_Lamplighter How's it going Old_lamp?
AIQ
Apr 9, 2022 04:59
but it's a foot in the door
AIQ
Apr 9, 2022 04:59
A little out of my area of expertise ...
AIQ
Apr 9, 2022 04:59
@zmike It's okay.

in a position like an economist, even if I was the weakest staff on the first day, I know for a fact that I could learn the content and be very very good at my job ... because I would know what exactly I need to perform in the role of an economist ... but in my current role, things aren't that specific ...
AIQ
Mar 31, 2022 00:54
like it's a policy analyst role which is a bit broad but doesn't have much high-level data analysis work ... my background is in economics and quantitative research ...
AIQ
Mar 31, 2022 00:53
like what if I can't perform well in the job not because I don't have the skills but because it might not be a direct match for my skills ...
AIQ
Mar 31, 2022 00:53
I guess I really wanted a job in gov and so I am feeling a little shaky
AIQ
Mar 31, 2022 00:52
shit I don't even know what I'm talking about ...
AIQ
Mar 31, 2022 00:52
It was my third day ... my immediate supervisor is away as her father passed away .. so this week I am just trying to get the ball rolling (setting up my PC, accounts, servers, paperwork, etc.) ... but really in the past, it was my direct supervisor who was there the first day to have that "chat" ...
AIQ
Mar 31, 2022 00:50
@Old_Lamplighter For some reason I'm feeling a little more nervous this time than in any other job before ... this job is pivotal in my career and permanent residency ... the job is a temporary assignment of 6 months and in this time I'll have to do enough to convince the directors to hire me permanently ... it's government so there are many many steps they have to jump through to make things happen ... and if I am not particularly good enough, they probably won't make that effort ...
AIQ
Mar 26, 2022 17:49
@Old_Lamplighter What should a new hire do on a first day?
AIQ
Mar 26, 2022 04:41
@Old_Lamplighter How you been?
AIQ
Mar 22, 2022 18:06
@motosubatsu I think so too, I guess I needed someone to say it out loud ...
AIQ
Mar 22, 2022 17:54
Will be treated with half the respect? Will my opinions and work have half the value? Will I always speak after the winner of the permanent position ... I don't know ...
AIQ
Mar 22, 2022 17:53
I mean if she said I won the 6-month position I wouldn't feel this way ... because I would feel like these were two different competitions ... I am grateful, really grateful because I wanted a job in the government ... I have a foot in the door and I can later on apply for other internal jobs ... so I am happy but this feeling of second position is kinda bothering me
AIQ
Mar 22, 2022 17:50
(I actually wasn't expecting the permanent position in the first place because I am on a limited time work permit and permanent positions are for Canadians or Permanent Residents, which I am not yet). So I new even before applying that I was applying for the 6 month position ... but now, the fact that the manager said I was the 1st runners up is kind of bothering me ... like I came in second ...
AIQ
Mar 22, 2022 17:50
@Old_Lamplighter Hey! Need some advice ... I'm starting a new job ... and there were two positions for this job ... one permanent and one temporary (6 months with the possibility to become permanent). The manager called me couple weeks ago and said I did really well and I was the first runners up, and so they offered me the 6 month position ...
AIQ
Mar 21, 2022 06:47
@Max That's right. I personally avoid discussing anything that is not work related in an email, which is supposed to be brief and to the point. It is just safer that way, because there are people who find the "Hope you had a great weekend" type of thing annoying and distracting.
AIQ
Mar 21, 2022 04:14
Old_Lamp here is best
AIQ
Mar 21, 2022 04:14
just my opinion I am no expert
AIQ
Mar 21, 2022 04:14
I don't think it adds any value to your "interpersonal skills" ...
AIQ
Mar 21, 2022 04:13
@Max hmmm but why bring it up and remind her though? What if during the funeral she had a horrible time and got into a brawl with her siblings over their inheritance ... I would skip it ...
AIQ
Mar 19, 2022 04:53
@Old_Lamplighter I like that you said "if you have a friend ..." thanks for being kind and not assuming that everyone has friends ... lol ...
AIQ
Mar 18, 2022 00:45
Wowwww I keep messing up my interviews ... missing opportunities on great come-back answers and giving a half-cooked answer to follow-up questions ...
