Regarding ん: I can't think of any example I would transliterate as ng. The g part of ng in English involves a much stronger "squeeze" of the back of the mouth than ん, as far as I can tell. There might be dialects of English where the difference is less pronounced though.
Sep 19, 2021 08:01
I see now what you were going for. It probably works better when using existing English letter pairings or words instead: cum bun. Then again, I guess that solution has its own share of downsides >_>
Sep 19, 2021 08:01
Did you mix up the two pronunciations? Because I don't see how かんばん would ever be pronounced kum-bung in Japanese.

What's the closest expression to "my heart is no longer in it"? One expression I thought of is やりがいを感じられなくなってしまった, but I'm a bit worried that sounds a little harsh? I don't want to imply that anything other than personal motivation is to blame for the change of heart.

"All the developers who are good are either happily working for more money than that or have moved to Silicon Valley, or New York, or London, or Sydney, or anywhere else they can get paid well for their skills." This statement is so absurd, that I can only interpret it as either facetious or genuinely stupid. A large percentage of adults on this planet are married and have children, dependents who may object to being dragged to a different country like luggage, just because their parent/spouse has aspirations as some hot-shot SE.

I don't care much honestly, I'm just curious why you as community delibrate make such choices?
May 29, 2020 11:17
I mean, why can't you people just have a normal topical (i.e, "anime") chat root like all the other stack exchange sites, instead of over the top cringy shit like お帰りなさいませ、ご主人様
May 29, 2020 11:14
I don't mean to be rude, but I've been to Maid Cafe's in Japan before (because I live here and people ask me to "show them around"), and it's 99% guys who are least extremely introverted and well ...otaku. That's just the reality.

@Martin-マーチン Go together with what? Allowing water to evaporate into/among some gas X will lead to different phenomena/results depending on what species of gas X is used (e.g., air VS SF6). I'm looking for whatever gas will facilitate evaporation the most/fastest. Doesn't seem like a hard to understand question to me... although I admit it might be hard to answer?

@Martin-マーチン Yeah, I am. And I don't understand ...how you don't understand.

@dmckee So apparently you are worthing asking maybe... :)

Know of any magnetic field strength equation that will bend around corners for me (see my post above)?
May 9, 2018 02:48
@Droleulb I see. Cheers.
May 9, 2018 02:47
@Droleulb Is tomorrow an auspicious day or something?
May 9, 2018 02:44
How is any of that relevant to my question though? :s
May 9, 2018 02:41
Any magnetism specialists here maybe? The equation for magnetic field strength is based on the distance r to the dipole, but what if I want if the straight line between the measured location and the dipole is obstructed by shielding (i.e., another paramagnetic solid)? Surely, I need a different, fancier equation now?

@macraf You're the one claiming that すいい is not analagous to ふうう in spite of several native Japanese speakers explaining to you that they behave exactly the same when it comes to lengthening. Hence, the burden of proof lies on you.
Aug 30, 2017 11:02
@macraf uhm... you wrote: "It's not true that this word has two consecutive vowels. "
Aug 30, 2017 11:02
@macraf You're wrong. い in Japanese is a vowel - Japanese speakers can extend いs about as long as their あs, うs, えs, and おs: until their breaths run out. Whether or not a "y" sound is considered a consonant in another language has no bearing whatsoever on Japanese.SE.

@corsiKa So why bother? Because showing a sliver of honesty is just the decent thing to do, on a human level. Showing that your company is not a big cold faceless machine, can actually benefit its reputation in the long run, believe it or not.
Oct 4, 2016 22:12
@corsiKa You missed my point entirely. I'm saying you can give the reason for rejection (provided it is actually based on something non-discrimantory: i.e., actual skills or qualifications), without giving in to the fear that the applicant might become argumentative. If that happens you don't need to argue or say anything else at all because by then you've already been more forthcoming/transparent than most companies. Just say something like "Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I must now attend to <insert task here>, but I wish you <insert platitude here>".
Oct 4, 2016 22:12
@cst1992 "robably because they could resort to negotiation/arguing" What kind of collective of big babies has society become that that is something to fear and avoid? What worse can happen than that you spend a few minutes listening to something you disagree with? Perhaps you'll hear something useful that you can use to improve the hiring process. Probably not, but so what?
