That's so sweet :)

After the last conversation, I thought we needed a puppy.

puppies are always welcome

Mind if I share ours? (well, not really ours but my SO's aunt's, but the closest we have to our own)

Pepe the griffon, when there's dogs on the TV

10:04 AM
Izzapuggy.

...and when the dog program cuts back to other animals.

(he was, to my knowledge, named after the singer/songwriter Pepe Willberg, not the hijacked meme frog)

Good, that name should not be allowed to get ruined.

He also has a big "brother" Hiski, also a griffon but a long-haired one. It's not a separate breed per se; long-haired ones and short-haired ones are born in the same litters.

10:11 AM
@kviiri The only Pepe I know is Pepe Silvia

Hiski is much harder to photograph since he always just looks like Chewbacca

@BESW I'm all in for unruining it too

Q: Are there rules to make my own warlock pact?

Jesse CohoonI know there are 3 pacts: blade, tome, and chain, but are there any rules/ guidelines to make one that's none of the above?

11:58 AM
Pepe is incidentally also a brand of licorice around here

12:13 PM
Sometimes this site is so confusing, "1+ 39,476
* users with less than 200 reputation are not tracked in the leagues" see https://stackexchange.com/leagues/122/month/rpg/2019-05-01/44723#44723

@kviiri how is it pronounced?

@Akixkisu Huh, that is confusing. I assume they meant as far as reputation changes but then they put the * next to both instances.

12:40 PM
side note, the DM as a Warlock Patron is pretty funny.

I thought so too!

@goodguy5 I mean, now I want to make a Deadpool inspired character with that theme

I really wish they provided more details about what that actually entailed in their mind.

I kind of feel like you could just use the Great Old One and call the GM an "otherworldly entity"

I think that would be a nice way to go. But then is it really the DM being the patron? How does that end up feeling different than GOO?

12:46 PM
Awakened Mind is just communicating directly with the GM (to NPCs) or the players (for PCs)....

XD

The first D&D group in which I was a player more than a GM, had a running joke that pre-dated my joining, in which the GM was an obscure deity who smited PCs when their players got cheeky about the plot.
Dec 3 '12 at 22:14, by BESW
There... was the time that the bard had a five-page backstory he didn't tell the DM about in which he was really a spy for an as-yet-unknown organization. We found out when he used animal messenger to send a (very damaging) report to his superiors.
Dec 3 '12 at 22:15, by BESW
A needle-thin bolt of pure fire lanced down from the heavens and disintegrated the weasel in its tracks. The DM turned to the bard's player and said "Next time, talk to me first."

@BESW I enjoy how this goes from feel-good-justice-but-maybe-not-great-for-DMing into a good DM moment.
DMs being fickle and wielding in-game power is something that often causes friction, but I think in this case the lesson at the end "we're in this together, talk to me" makes it a good move on the DM's part.

There are different warlock patrons for different DM styles, so most (if not all) patrons could be the DM

GcL
1:01 PM
@BESW At my tables I avoid that entirely. The characters can have secrets. The players can't.

@GcL +1
@Rubiksmoose You flavour (meta) it up. Entropic Ward can literally be the warlock asking the GM to "please cause disadvantage for this obscure reason".

GcL
@DavidCoffron Yeah, like distracting their psyche with this chat! /S

Though Shield could go full Deadpool and just be the thoughts are so horrific (or alien because there is literally a player-brain in there) that telepathy fails and psychic damage is partially reflected.
And Create Thrall is obviously brief DM powers to control manipulate NPCs

seemingly unrelated:
I want to a create a slime/ooze rancher named Ivan.... Ivan Ooze.

@DavidCoffron The Fiend patron's Hurl Through Hell is when the NPC's mini falls off the table

1:09 PM
@MikeQ When was the last time it only took 6 seconds to find something that fell under the table?

@DavidCoffron When was the last time a full round of combat took 6 seconds?

Ben
Evening all

Q: What problems might be caused by a PC having the Ooze type?

Diamcreep ProductionsI am trying to make a homebrew slime race, and I'd like to know what complications might arise from a PC having the Ooze type, including ones caused by having Ooze AND Humanoid.

@goodguy5 r did you mean a rancher who raises oozes (rather than a rancher who is an ooze)

@DavidCoffron Why not both?

@MikeQ Then it is just Juiblex

1:17 PM
C'mon down to Juiblex Ranch!

What would you farm from oozes anyway? Eggs? Milk? Meat? Jam?

Jello

jello
jinx

very nice.

other options: mayonnaise.
marmite

1:19 PM
How would you milk an ooze? Do you need proficiency? Is the raw jelly edible or does it need pasteurization?
(HNQ material right there)

@MikeQ I think the ooze partially digests certain things and you harvest the material in that state. IDK what could be produced that way, but that is the most useful feature of the ooze

!!! I forgot I wanted to do this

@DavidCoffron Hmm... so it would be something like casu marzu.

@DavidCoffron great for bone collectors and people that hate removing dead body parts from armor?

must make a note somewhere to design gelatinous hypercube

1:22 PM
ohhhh yeah. I remember that convo.

@Carcer Are there any meaningful mechanics to that? As it moves it would change shape by cross-section, but...

Jan 15 at 16:56, by Rubiksmoose
Gelatinous hypercube

yes we came up with it at the same time

@DavidCoffron Maybe it naturally exists on / can traverse multiple planes simultaneously. Give it a permanent blink effect.

yeah, you go in one face and if you fight your way out you come out in another dimension

1:24 PM
@Carcer We've got to stop being on the same wavelength it seems. That's scary ;)
@Carcer Oh and I was just finding a convenient place to link the conversation.

nonsense good sir
great minds and all that

@Rubiksmoose tit / tat

yea. either or both.

Originally, in my mind, he was not himself an ooze. But no reason he couldn't be.

@kviiri Thanks for pointing me to the forums! I haven't had many responses but i did got a good suggestion

1:26 PM
takes an ooze to farm an ooze

@AaronParrilla We're happy to hear you're getting some good suggestions at least :)

@Carcer Probably the harvester would have to be connected to Juiblex:
> the Faceless Lord is one of the few beings that can ... imbue them with a modicum of intelligence

do we assume that the Black Pudding (monstrous ooze) is actually the same thing as the Black Pudding (foot item) in the standard D&D setting?

For reference the question is:
3
Q: Dungeon with puzzle traps that force players to act as a team

Aaron ParrillaI just started recently to DM a campaign (first campaign ever as DM), and I want to create a Dungeon with puzzle traps based on the concept of teamwork (much like that one SAW movie), and I have several ideas but don't know very well how to implement them. For example, a long narrow corridor of p...

because then there's an obvious farmability to Black Puddings.

1:27 PM
@Rubiksmoose thanks xD

"foot item"

@AaronParrilla if you had time, you might be able to see if anyobody here in chat has some suggestions.
(no guarantees we will but can't hurt right?)

@AaronParrilla No problem and welcome to the community! Glad to see you got chat access too :)

GcL
@Carcer The British love puddings. It's really the biggest market for farmed or manufactured puddings.

Black pudding is made of processed meat, bones, and other fleshthings. Perhaps the ingredients are fallen adventurers.

1:28 PM
@Rubiksmoose sure thing!

@goodguy5 Hmm, this is going to be hard to explain... do you know IPA?

not off hand, but I can look it up

GcL
@Rubiksmoose Do they have to be good suggestions?

@AaronParrilla cool :) all you have to do is ask it here then if you want.

@kviiri wiki page open. ready

1:29 PM
@goodguy5 I had to look it up too but I think it's just /pepe/ :)

@GcL Expecting good suggestions from chat? Seems hopeful at best ;) /s

@AaronParrilla FWIW, I've had quite a bit of trouble with puzzles in my games in the past, and it took me a long time to find a formula that fits my current long-running group. In my experience, groups take very different approaches to puzzles, so you kind of have to try a few things and see what they like. My first 5e group loved puzzles and we could spend a whole session on a murder mystery or exploration puzzle, while my current group would rather breeze by for the combat and NPC-interactions.

GcL
@Rubiksmoose Better off listening to the sounds of silence. At least that was on a popular album.

@GcL And a great one!

@GcL I adore that song

1:30 PM
@DavidCoffron indeed, group tolerance for puzzle complexity needs to be considered in design

GcL
@AaronParrilla You're looking for puzzles for D&D?

@GcL Rubiks linked the question about. Specifically, puzzle traps (etc.) which require teamwork.

@GcL (you can see their question above for reference) 5e

@GcL puzzle traps

@kviiri "pee pee"? As an American, who was once a teenager, this is hilarious

1:31 PM
@goodguy5 No, IPA e is more like the "a" in "pay"

oh, nevermind.
"pay pay"

@Carcer Also, I try to stray away from the MMO-RPG idea of a puzzle where they have to pick up on obscure clues to solve them. It often boils down to trial-and-error for the "puzzle-doors" in my experience (so I make it more interesting by after the first failure half of the floor disappears, and knowing that the next one would drop you into a 60 foot pit)

@kviiri yea. I figured it out. the wikipedia page was confusing (i.e. - I'm bad at it).

@goodguy5 Not quite that, the "e" is a short vowel so it's like the "ay" part was cut short

GcL
@AaronParrilla I have a few pdfs full of those. Lemme find the FOSS ones and a link to the source. I found that as long as there was a skip or "i don't wanna puzzle today" option, the players were more likely to enjoy them. The do the puzzle for the gold star worked well with my groups.

1:33 PM
It's a bit like the "a" of "pale"
...no wait.

yea. I'm jiving.

Damn, doesn't English have a short e sound anywhere.

Bet?

^
or "pet"

Yeah, that works!

1:34 PM
"peh peh" would be my intuitive pronounciation of the name "pepe" as a native english speaker
oh

yea, but I was hoping that Kviirish (Finnish?) was different.

Inb4 we start discussing how "meme" is pronounced like it was the early 2010's again

maybe "peh pay"

@DavidCoffron my party is composed of two veterans and two newbies, I know they will go through the puzzles with no problem, the thing is that if teamwork is not required, the two veterans can probably go on ahead leaving the other two behind (probably to their deaths) since, for some reason, both of them chose to create Chaotic Evil characters and disregard the other party members.

@Carcer I'd actually swap them if I had to choose. "Pay peh"

1:35 PM
@GcL Thanks that'll be great.

Finnish has really consistent pronunciation for the most part, there's a reason why some words are spelled exactly like their IPA ;)

GcL
@AaronParrilla here are 60 puzzle/trap type rooms that someone used in a long running campaign they had. I found they were easy to adapt for my purposes: docs.google.com/document/d/…

@goodguy5 no that seems extremely weird

note to self, make Kviirish a game race/language/etc

@AaronParrilla Have you ever played the Fireboy and Watergirl games?

1:36 PM
@kviiri Depends on the region. Here it's pronounced with a palatalized first m.

They offer a number of demonstrations of puzzles which require multiple characters to complete.

@AaronParrilla Conventional puzzles are hard to implement in group TTRPGs. Even if the puzzle is well-designed, what tends to happen is the puzzle-savvy players dominate the puzzle and solve it themselves

specifically I think I would have picked up the name as a child from the character of Pepé Le Pew

GcL
@AaronParrilla I particularly like the carved faces curse and the rude door. I made a polite door that had a magic butler in a mirror. The image bowed to the characters. They had to bow back to get the door to open.

@DavidCoffron first time seeing it (Fireboy and Watergirl)

1:38 PM
@goodguy5 I support this idea

@AaronParrilla I played it a lot with my brother when I was younger (helped get me into puzzles). Obviously they'd have to be translated to D&D-things, but the ideas can roughly work.

@GcL XDDD I know one of my players would go insane before entering XD

@GcL As written, a lot of these require leaps of faith. They need work before adapting into a playable game.

GcL
@AaronParrilla also, they're a minesweeper room in there. I modified it a bit, but my players got fed up with it, and just took the damage to get the prize. Later, they led some creatures back there and got them to step on places that they knew were trapped.

You could also drop riddles where portions are tied to character backstories (as the player will be most familiar with their own backstory)

GcL
1:39 PM
@AaronParrilla It was an obviously optional door.

@MikeQ that's precisely the reason why implementing a simple puzzle or trap won't do, I need a way to encourage (or entice) the party to go at it together
@DavidCoffron I'll check it out in a bit

Ben
So I had a game tonight, initiative was rolled 4 times, and 0 rounds of combat the entire session.

GcL
@MikeQ I found taking the ideas and implementing them in my dungeons pretty easy. I only took the ones that immediately appealed to me. 60 free ideas was a pretty nice find when I came across it, so I wasn't going to complain about it not being perfectly wrapped up in a bow.

The best reference I have is the SAW movie, where everyone dies (as usual) but at the end jigsaw reveals that they could have gone through the entire thing as a party (group) and everyone would have been alilve (putting the group above the individual in that case)

Ben
That's a new high score. Lol

1:41 PM
@AaronParrilla Depends on the system. If each PC has different strengths, then you could split the puzzle, such as having clues or goals only available to certain PCs

@AaronParrilla I would remiss if I didn't mention My Guy Syndrome when it comes to CE characters. Remember, y'all are there to have fun above anything else (I suspect). Don't let party-turmoil detract from that fun.

@MikeQ hmmm, you gave me a nice idea XD thanks. (You made me think about that movie, The Cube i think) I can work with something like that

GcL
@AaronParrilla Sounds like a problem with the player dynamics. It is probably a good idea to voice those concerns to each of the veteran players individually.

@DavidCoffron yeah the two veterans do that all the time, I try to play around it (One would think that being two veterans they would join the spirit of the game...) but sometimes gets a little out of hand XDD
@GcL yeah, there's certainly an element of player dynamics not working properly. I've had one conversation last session with the veterans (hoping that this next session will be different)

GcL
I recommend a passive tone when stating your concern. "I feel concerned that the characters of <newer players> are being left out of encounters and parts of the game. I would like help to ensure their characters get included so that the players are included in the game."

1:49 PM
@AaronParrilla It's possible they have a different idea of what the "spirit of the game" is or should be.

@GcL yeah I stated as much but the problem is, as @DavidCoffron mentioned, the "my guy syndorme".

I hope this question can get reopened. I'd like to offer an answer for how great it is to have a grognard DM so that you can have a "Great Old One" patron ... 8^D

GcL
@AaronParrilla That should be dealt with immediately and directly. I like the explanation, "the player makes the decisions and then figures out how to role play those decisions through the lens of the character. The character is just a sheet of paper. It doesn't choose anything."
2

@Rubiksmoose As a first timer I must confess that I started this campaign in a taver, with a boy suddenly entering such tavern as his farm was catching fire and her little sister was inside (SUPER CLICHE i know but hey XD...)

GcL
If they picked CE characters, fine. If the game requires party cohesion and cooperation, that's a tougher thing to do for those characters... so it's a little more difficult role play for the player, but they still have to make it happen.

1:51 PM
The guys go there

@AaronParrilla I mean you're playing D&D which is, essentially, Fantasy Cliches: the RPG.

@AaronParrilla Usually when one player dominates the puzzles, it's not out of malice. They think that by solving the puzzle, they're helping the group. But from the DM's perspective, you can see this prevents other players from participating.
What I like to do is distribute the puzzle itself, so it can't be solved immediately. Let different players discover different clues, and discuss.

and as soon as they see the badies, He asks if they are from the <insert generic backstory guild here> I say no, HE LEFT xDDD leaving the two newbies to deal with everything

@AaronParrilla Yup. That's MGS.
And a good reminder that being a "veteran" doesn't mean you are going to have a good time playing with that person.
Well, correction, that is MGS if it is negatively affecting party fun.

GcL
@AaronParrilla i did a puzzle once that was a mini Sudoku board. Only the player of the character interacting with it could work on it. The other characters were involved in a combat with endless waves of little enemies (because that's what the combat min/maxer liked to stomp on). Combat went until they fled the puzzle area or solved it.

1:54 PM
It certainly is behavior that can and usually does lead to it though.

GcL
You could do something similar with two simultaneous puzzles.

That has happened in two or three occasions (if it's not related to his backstory somehow he doesn't care) I've made sure to include his backstory as an engine for the plot to move forward, but I can't possibly manage (As it happened last time) two different battles in two completely different settings at the same I mean... not complaining it's just that I think that takes a toll on everybody's fun

@GcL I've done almost the exact same thing (except the puzzle was riddles about what damage type to use to get through layers of the door)

GcL
@DavidCoffron yoink

@GcL wow that's also a nice idea.

1:57 PM
@KorvinStarmast Sadly, the way things are shaping up right now, I'm not sure how likely that is.

@GcL Although in mine there was a high-level sorcerer battle in the background which in hindsight didn't work out. I wanted to make the world feel already at a high power level for the players to strive towards, but it was difficult to convince my players to flee like the ally told them to. Once they did though it was fun to have stray spells fly through the open hallways during the other fight

I once saw a somewhat sloppy but interesting approach: The puzzle was a magical obstacle. Each player was shown a different card, each with its own clue. Then the players had to discuss their clues and collaborate to find the solution.

@MikeQ And if such a puzzle was set up by a sadistic psion who jarred the character's mind if they spoke any word listed on the card?

@DavidCoffron This GM took away the cards before the players could discuss it. So the players had to memorize it. Which was problematic because some of the cards had very complicated clues

@V2Blast Thanks for the link. That class is FIDDLY as all get out. I am regretting that I let that UA into our group. :p But we'll get used to it, eventually.

2:00 PM
@MikeQ Hanabi the card game has the same in reverse --- each player knows all cards but those in their own hand, and they have to use the limited clue tokens and information on already played cards (and the other players' behavior) to deduce what they have.

GcL
@MikeQ Two of my players are consummate note takers. Which makes it possible, and fun for them, to have large complexly networked casts of NPCs

I am not much of a note taker, I usually feel that if my players have to take notes I'm doing something wrong.

@GcL I have players who enjoy that. Unfortunately I am not the kind of GM who is good at keeping track of NPCs (or more accurately, each of their individual motives)

@kviiri Consider that perhaps the players take notes because they're interested and engaged

@MikeQ That really depends on the table

2:03 PM
@MikeQ I haven't seen them taking notes during a TV show, or a film, or when reading a novel, though.

I've had players who take note because they feel like they'll miss something that will become vital and get screwed (which I had to eventually convince them that wasn't the kind of GM I was)

GcL
@DavidCoffron I use an old rolodex. Each NPC is just a small list of notes. If the characters get interested, then I expand on the character. E.g. "Lilly. Runs a tannery where everyone is addicted to a stimulant tea"

@kviiri But can you find an actor who doesn't take some kind of notes when helping create those forms of media? Or a writer who doesn't take notes? It's collaborative story-telling

@DavidCoffron Fair point

GcL
They went back, so that became a thing. Like... where do they get the tea from? Is it legal? How good is the leather?
Long side quest short: players were drug mules... literally the druid turned into a mule to pull a cart of the raw materials for making the tea.

2:05 PM
@kviiri As a player with an awful memory I can tell you that if I'm taking notes it's because I care enough about the story/characters to note that I need to remember these things.
Usually.

Nevertheless, I feel note-taking is a first sign that the amount of information in the game world may be excessive to keep in one's mind, which can detract from the experience.

Though the reverse isn't true.

@Rubiksmoose I want to run games so people with awful memories can participate without having to take notes

GcL
@kviiri Unless they like it.... or only play once a month.

@GcL "they like it" is a complex topic that's inevitably shaded by the particular people's past RPG history.

2:06 PM
@kviiri agreed

GcL
@kviiri That's a different kind of game. I ran a more episode style campaign. They were "people extractors" that got sent on different missions that were all neatly wrapped with a bow. Usually, go somewhere by rapid transport. kidnap extract someone while discovering the twist of that particular mission.

@kviiri I do too! But I'm not sure how you get around the fact that I can't remember names for beans.

@Rubiksmoose Index cards 'n' stuff
Usually the choice of name helps too (veering towards the unusual yet simple is helpful)

GcL
But that leads to a very linear kind of story. Branches were minimal... like sorting out that they were working for the bad guy all along.... and had to plan a way to kidnap extract him at the end of the campaign.

@kviiri isn't that notes?

GcL
2:09 PM
@kviiri Who is doing the index cards?

@Rubiksmoose I guess, technically, but it's shared and made by me, not personal

GcL
@kviiri Does that make for less work on the DM side? Like, are the players maintaining the cards or is the DM?

@kviiri ahhh I see. But does that doesn't actually change the complexity of the story right? It seems it is the simple act of writing things down you don't like right?
For what its worth I'm not disagreeing with your goals or anything. I'm just trying to understand them
Anybody know if there are any pictures of Aasimar with wings in 5e sourcebooks?

@GcL Yay, love what your players did there. :)

oh. actually it looks like the default pic may actually be winged. They are just crazy hard to see

2:23 PM
@Ben In my brother's campaign, we had three sessions in a row with no combat. RP and exploring only.

GcL
@KorvinStarmast I too was entertained. Fair play to them to make good use of traps they figured out.

@GcL Not really --- I just try to maintain a low enough count in NPCs and such that it's not really much work in the first place

GcL
@KorvinStarmast Do you have awards for that kind of play? experience or loot or other?
@kviiri Cool. Sounds like a good way to go.

@GcL Of course. The DM awards XP based on what we did, or in this case how we furthered the "plot" (as it were, it's kinda loose) or what mysteries we uncovered.

@Rubiksmoose It's, uh, more complicated than that
I can't really explain it well

GcL
2:26 PM
@KorvinStarmast Kinda like milestones or quest checkpoints?

@kviiri No worries. I figured it was.
@kviiri You don't have to if you don't want to.

But somehow it comes down to feeling that if there's so many details one has to start writing them down, it starts detracting from the game

GcL
@kviiri Did a fountain pen kill your parents and now you've got a lifelong vendetta against the written word?
Did a bic rollerball keep interrupting the last campaign you had asking awful questions about details that were irrelevant? Air speed velocity of avian species and the like?

As a GM, I usually don't aim for very detail-driven gameplay, and players who try to literally capture everything I say, no matter how insignificant, feel like they might always just jump at me and say something like "a-HA! In session 6 you said the curtains were blue, and now they're indigo? What can explain this magic!"

@kviiri I think that is honestly a very interesting metric! And it's certainly got me thinking.

GcL
2:29 PM
Have you inherit a cursed mechanical pencil that only writes in iambic pentameter, but it's always off be a single syllable ?
@kviiri I would roll with that so hard.

Nothing so mechanical, but I guess you could call that 'mini milestones' .
IF we didn't sort out some of the "Who the hell is stealing all of the beer making supplies from the local farmers?" we would not then figure out where to confront the mini boss who was doing it (using his thugs to do so .... We tried to talk him out of it, which was where most of session three went, but we also figured out during that failed attempt that he's not the Big Boss behind it all ... and so on.

GcL
50 shades of blue side quest.... saphires and a falcon.

@GcL I'm more of a troche person

@kviiri " A small medicated lozenge designed to dissolve."?

@GcL I wish more people would "get" that ...

@GcL Thanks for that link to mysterious monuments, some nice material there for a future encounter. two thumbs up

@Rubiksmoose It's a poetic form

Ben
Well I do feel a little bit stupid now :(

no wait... it's spelled trochee. Weird.

GcL
@KorvinStarmast I messaged the author of it. I just noticed today that their name isn't on it.

Ben
2:40 PM
Earlier today I pulled some people up for swearing, however I was only just flagged for one comment, that was intended as a joke, but was really just not nice. No swearing, but out of context it was incredibly rude...

@kviiri oh! well that would explain why google doesn't find it. I still would not have known it either way. so TIL!
@Ben well the chat flagging system is incredibly flawed in a lot of ways. not providing context is one of them

Ben
True, but still. It was a fair bit hypocritical of me, in hindsight.
It wasn't nice, even though it wasn't aimed at anyone.

@Rubiksmoose Agreed

@Ben Swearing is about maintaining a level of civility and family-friendliness that is separate from context. We should be discouraging swearing since it is against the rules in any context.

GcL
@Rubiksmoose Bloody right it is.

Ben
2:47 PM
Yes. I agree. Like I said my comment didn't contain swearing, but it was name calling.
And while it wasn't aimed at anyone, that's not really something we endorse here either

Well live and learn eh? I think your attitude about it is great.
:)

GcL
Gotta keep it friendly for the whelps of the world.

Ben
Yeah, a mistake is only a mistake if you don't learn from it :)

GcL
Is there a definitive list of swears? Are we limited to English swears?
Does god damn it count as a swear?

Just use your common sense and you'll be fine.
I think?

Q: Is profanity allowed on RPG.SE?

Chuck DeeThere have been questions in relation to language used, and offenses given in word choice- but what about outright profanity? Though (I think) most here are adults, that's not necessarily a given, and I've always viewed profanity for it's sake to be the recourse of a limited vocabulary rather th...

@GcL I think I've said dammit before without kickback

Ben
@KorvinStarmast we were effectively in Mafia territory, sneaking about and getting caught. But somehow, even though combat encounters were triggered, and initiative was rolled, we didn't actually start combat. Lol

> I won't go into "but what words exactly," it should be obvious which words are considered offensive - the FCC-banned, anything pointlessly referring to a sexual part of the male or female anatomy, slurs, etc. If someone flags it, and it's something that a reasonable person would not want their kid to be saying, would not say to their boss or teacher, etc. then it should go.

hehehe, sounds like a fun session.

GcL
@kviiri My common sense? That's assuming I'm common or have any sense at all! Umbrage! I'm taking umbrage.. and I'm not giving it back.

Ben
2:51 PM
@GcL Depends where you're from, I guess.

@GcL If you have to ask “is this inappropriate to say?” chances are its best not to

GcL
@LiamMorris I'd never make the mistake of asking. /S
@Ben I really enjoy British swears.

Ben
@KorvinStarmast It was definitely intense. And we fumbled so much stuff too. Jumped the gun so many times and just didn't allow for any planning. It was chaotic, but it was fun.
@GcL Codswallop
:P

GcL
I like using bollocks. I think most people know it's balls, but they don't really react the way a Brit would.

Ben
@GcL Do you mean you wouldn't think to ask first?

GcL
2:55 PM
@Ben If I thought to ask, I'd quickly think better of it.

Ben
Right, that's fair
Oh speaking of British language... I learned that "Shakespeare" might actually have been a woman?
As in the works of Shakespeare were actually written by a woman, and the only reason they were published and displayed was because a man, Shakespeare, acted as a front for her.

GcL
@Ben I thought it was concretely proposed that there was a definitive potential they were an alien.

@Ben Ah yes, William, a fine name for a woman :P

@Ben Speculation, just as with a lot of other "uh, what do we really know about the Bard?" inquiry. If all of his stuff was ghost written by a lady, the Good For Her (Whomever she may be).

GcL
@LiamMorris I know some women named Billy. Billie

Ben
2:59 PM
Yeah, I'm not sure how much evidence there is... From what I'm told it's situational at best... So speculation abounds.

GcL
probably with an ie. I never had to write it.
@Ben Speculation: the best kind of evidence.
I used to think to speculate meant to wear those half glasses and look over them.

Ben
@GcL My PC in my current game is a woman, and since her name is unpronounceable outside of her native language, she's called herself "Johnny"

GcL
@Ben That's entertaining. Does she have four siblings? and is she alive?

@Ben Theres a similar theory that Jack The Ripper was a woman, and Australian. There was a documentary about it.

Ben
@LiamMorris interesting...
@GcL if there is a reference there, I missed it haha

GcL
3:06 PM
@Ben Johnny Five Alive. Short Circuit. youtube.com/watch?v=WlgJs_G8Co8

@LiamMorris Well the theory would be more akin that William Shakespeare was just acting as a playwright, because a woman (who supposedly wrote the plays) would face social condemnation and impossible odds trying to get their works published
Not that William Shakespeare was secretly female

Ben
@GcL ah fair enough. Yeah I never saw that haha
@kviiri yes, this.

GcL
You're missing out. "Hey laserlips. Your mother was a snow blower!" Classic.... actually... probably doesn't hold up that well. Thinking back on it, it's probably on par for sexism in the 80's... so a lot.

@GcL Oh dear, that movie

Ben
Oh, sidenote: Levitation in 5e.
It says "you can raise or lower the altitude of the target to a maximum of 20 ft" (or something to that effect)
Does that mean overall, or just per round?
As it does have a range of 60ft

3:11 PM
iirc its per round
up to them being at the full range of the spell

Ben
Yeah. The way it's worded, it can be read either way I guess
Might be worth asking to clarify

"You can change the target’s altitude by up to 20 feet in either direction on your turn. If you are the target, you can move up or down as part of your move. Otherwise, you can use your action to move the target, which must remain within the spell’s range."

GcL
@Ben per round. If cast on self, the caster is never out of range.

i think the real ambiguity is if you can change altitude while it's out of range
I think it does but it almost attaches that caveat just to the horizontal movement component

Ben
When the spell ends they float back down to the ground

GcL
3:15 PM
@SirCinnamon Oh... yeah..they only have to be in range to have it cast on them... after that the caster doesn't even have to see them.

@GcL But you cant move them out of your range. so if they crawl to 61 feet away, you lose the ability to move them? or does the spell end?

GcL
@SirCinnamon The spell doesn't say it does. It also doesn't attach the being in range to anything other than the initial casting. "One creature or loose object of your choice that you can see within range rises vertically, up to 20 feet, and remains suspended there for the duration."

@GcL " Otherwise, you can use your action to move the target, which must remain within the spell’s range"

Ben
When the target leaves the spells range, it ends.

@Ben I'm not certain about that. But maybe

GcL
3:19 PM
@SirCinnamon Yup. Miseed that
@Ben Does it? the must remain in the spells range is only part of the movement description.

I think the coherent reading of the rules is that levitation doesn't end if you and the target become too distantly separated - you can maintain concentration on a spell even if you are outside the initial range of casting, as per sage advice - but that you're only capable of moving the subject if they're within the 60ft range
