@GcL Is that a thing in 5e? I know it was a thing in AD&D for sure, but I hadn't seen it carried through some of the other editions.

GcL
@JohnP Yeah. There's a section in the DMG I think about effects of mixing potions. Maybe it's XgtE. I don't recall mixing potions being a codified thing in AD&D.

> Variant: Mixing Potions
A character might drink one potion while still under the effects of another, or pour several potions into a single container. The strange ingredients used in creating potions can result in unpredictable interactions.
When a character mixes two potions together, you can roll on the Potion Miscibility table. If more than two are combined, roll again for each subsequent potion, combining the results. Unless the effects are immediately obvious, reveal them only when they become evident.
1% chance each time you mix two potions together.

GcL
Seems like that might an okay way to make better healing potions.... of course, you don't know until you try.
combined with an herbalist kit and proficiency in it... might even be worth the effort.

@GcL The rules don't specifically say this, but I always rule that there's no interaction if you combine two potions of the same kind; you just have a Flask of Healing that can be used twice.

8:10 PM
How it takes 12 seconds to consume 2 ounces of fluid I'm not going to interrogate.

GcL
@Xirema Is that how big potions are?
:50485682 While fighting?

@Xirema Extremely viscous potions

@SirCinnamon Hmm, if it were anything like that menthol-flavored cough syrup I drank the last time I got sick....

now when they invent potion gogurt tubes, it wont make any sense

GcL
I've tried to run a Guinness mile before... drinking is significantly reduced when sprinting is involved.
@SirCinnamon Gogurt of healing. Like... stawberry banana flavored?

8:12 PM
@GcL Goes down smooth

> Different kinds of magical liquids are grouped in the category of potions: brews made from enchanted herbs, water from magical fountains or sacred springs, and oils that are applied to a creature or object. Most potions consist of one ounce of liquid.Potions, DMG, pg. 139

@GcL Our x-country team did a beer mile as a group once. Our top runner couldn't break 10 minutes, and half the team couldn't finish. I was around 14 minutes IIRC, but it wasn't guinness. Some pale imitation made in 'murica.

....... Guess who has been doing a whooooole lot of 5e potions research in the last few weeks. ;)

GcL
@JohnP Yeah.. Same idea. drink 1 pint. run 400m. repeat 4 times.

@Xirema the rules assume this is something you're doing in combat with potion vials that are specifically designed to be very secure and sturdy
one imagines most of the effort is in retrieving and unstoppering the things

8:15 PM
@GcL I am much slower since I took up martial arts, but I bet I could still do a Guinness mile in under 15 minutes.
The main problem is the foaming after chugging.

GcL
@JohnP I think I'd just have a Guinness and walk somewhere nice these days.

@GcL Sounds wonderful. I made sure to have a pint when I went through Heathrow a few weeks ago. Just to say I had, anyway.

a colleague suggested I should try non-alcoholic beer recently

This reminds me I need to photograph and list the rest of my 2nd ed D&D stuff soon.
@Carcer Isn't that just bitter seltzer?

are you selling or just cataloguing?
@JohnP I wouldn't know. I don't drink seltzer or beer in the first place
he was suggesting as an alternative to soft drinks

8:22 PM
@Carcer Selling. I'm down to modules and a lot of the campaign sourcebooks. I'm keeping a good selection of the rulebooks (I bought a couple large plastic bins of AD&D stuff at a garage sale).
A lot of dragonlance modules that I'm tempted to keep, but I just don't have the room to store all this stuff.

@doppelgreener DOP!! :p

8:46 PM
zap!
oh hey, does hunger of hadar have a typo?
> A 20-foot-radius sphere of blackness and bitter cold appears, centered on a point with range and lasting for the duration.
I'm assuming that should be "within"?

@Rubiksmoose Probably, but no one notices things

@DavidCoffron I certainly didn't! And I've read this spell several times before.

No, that it not a typo; hunger of Hadar can only be summoned in a stove with a built-in cooktop.

@BESW hahaha!

@BESW i mean, that makes sense to me

8:50 PM
You can only target points around modern cooking amenities. After all, Hadar is hungry.

Or does the point itself have to have the capacity for rangedness

user15026
@BESW well yes where else do you cook the soup

@Rubiksmoose oh man, I completely autocorrected that in my head

@Carcer I saw that!
I mean apparently we all have been doing it every time we read it.
"point within range" is even boilerplate language so even easier to fill. (and more confusing how they messed it up)
The only reason I noticed was because it wasn't in quote format and I was checking the wording against the official one to make sure it was transcribed right.

8:55 PM
to be honest, I routinely make typos of that nature when typing quickly

I almost "corrected" the quote lol

missing or adding -ly to words by accident is a frequent feature

I mean, who doesn't love their adverbs right?

@Carcer I'd say original White Wolf sparks more designer-intent-questions-per-page than D&D, but its audience base is relatively smaller to the point that D&D probably still accounts for the majority of actual designer-intent discussins.

isn't the designer intent for all WW pretentious edginess?

9:01 PM
@Carcer Life goals.

There we go.

Meanwhile: spells that you literally can't use on yourself at high enough level
who designed that

what spell is that

very coincidentally that first one you posted was Harry Dresden reanimating and riding Sue from the Field Museum
... in turn represented by a fate game totally unlike D&D where that would be totally legit

@Carcer a whole bunch of them, actually. Anima nonsense.

9:06 PM
ah, anima
I profess no familiarity with the system

@doppelgreener Yeah, I liked it better but couldn't find a resolvable link to post.

>+5 Presence per added effect
>your Presence goes up 5 per level
>spellcasting uses a raw stat to cap things
>you gain a stat point every *other* level
see the problem?

@Rubiksmoose I was darkness was just written "Instead of a point in space, you can target an object..."
I don't think I have enough context to understand the problem

@Carcer But that would be the logical way to write it.
And thus antithetical to D&D's spell design guidelines

@Carcer There's quite a few spells that have that specific rider attached to them.

9:08 PM
@Carcer you can only put so much power into the spell, and the scaling on this spell is outpaced by the growth of the character.

"I was darkness"

@gareththeelf the difference is that darkness says "If the point you choose is on an object you are holding or one that isn't being worn or carried, the darkness emanates from the object and moves with it." if HoH had that line it would do the same thing. — Rubiksmoose 3 mins ago

The precedent established is that if a spell is meant to be attachable to an object, and thus follow that object, the spell will be written to say so.

darkness is a bit weirder though. I'm not sure if many other spells are written like it

So at a high enough level, you literally can't use it on yourself.
(see also: communication spells that can't keep up with people growing in level equally)

9:10 PM
@Stackstuck I think I still don't have enough context to understand what is broken but I'm not sure chat's the easiest place to explain how anima works to me

@Rubiksmoose Daylight.

@Rubiksmoose good catch!

@Xirema well I wouldn't actually call it a solid precedent. There is redundancy in some spells where it says something that would have already happened. It is rare but it happens.

Daylight looks like a copy+paste edit from darkness, as it happens

@Xirema Yeah I figured that one would because they are basically copypasta

9:11 PM
@Carcer have you ever seen the Truenamer scaling problem? Like that but worse.

@Xirema But really that is just being pedantic.
@V2Blast thanks! Completely by accident, but I'll accept it lol

the spelling error on hunger of hadar is in my phb, the printing of which I am uncertain because now there's a cat on me and I can't reach it
I wonder if it's been stealth corrected in any later printings

@Carcer Might check when I get home, I have a version that had to have been printed semi-recently.

@Carcer Put "Strength" in place of "Presence". Basically saying "You get +X bonus per level, but RAW caps strength at Y, so a spell caster of level Z casting a strength addition spell has no effect because their strength is already capped and can't be increased"
If I am understanding it correctly, anyway.

9:21 PM
@V2Blast "freedom gas" sounds like something the Joker would unleash on unsuspecting civilians.

@Carcer yeah, I checked and it's been there since the first printing. asked an online friend who has the latest printing (as of 2018 PHB errata) but haven't heard back yet
Twitter embeds: still broken
> A challenge for tabletop folks: Name the top five tabletop RPGs you’ve spent the most time actually playing and/or running.

that's actually tough

@V2Blast 5e, PF, Masks, Honey Heist, ?

Pathfinder and 3.5 take first and second place by a large margin but I'm not sure in which order. Next three are probably some combination of Dark Heresy, Shadowrun 4e, and... I guess nWoD, if you consider the different flavours of that one RPG?

@V2Blast AD&D 1st, AD&D 2nd, 3.5/Pathfinder, ICE and Champions
Also did one of the WW:VtM variants, but don't remember which one. It was actually kind of cool.

9:33 PM
Hello.
New around here, are you open for new players at all?

> And remember, everything bad you doo Will comm back to you like a bungalow [sic]

(Looked on Roll20 but there's nothing text-based that's on in British hours, and as far as I know if I start a game myself I'd have to be the GM and I don't think I'm equal to that.)
And I would love to play something :-)

@Shalvenay that question I wrote has opened up a can of worms. By the words of KRyan, who I trust on the matter, Paizo Adventure Path enemies could be beaten by any badly optimized party of characters. Badly as in "it takes effort, like taking all social skills on a fighter".

Hello.

9:49 PM
@A.B. Welcome! :)
@A.B. waves

@V2Blast wait a minute that's not the Onion

I am, indeed, not an onion.

The whole world is the Onion right now.

Hello! Sorry, I thought this had notifications and it hasn't - or not where I thought - so I didn't realise you'd answered.

10:07 PM
@V2Blast Lump together D&D editions, or break them out?

@nitsua60 up to you guess! I think they're different enough that breaking them up is sensible

Definitely Fate (Atomic Robo variants mostly) and D&D (3.5, 4e), then it gets murky but probably... Lady Blackbird, Cthulhu Dark, Roll For Shoes?

@nitsua60 I'd say one of both would be interesting (assuming the D&D unlumped one would be all D&D)

I'm not sure what would edge onto the list in 5th place if you combined D&D/PF for me

If I unlump Fate and D&D, then it's D&D 3.5, an Atomic Robo hack, D&D 4e, Masters of Umdaar... Lady Blackbird?

10:16 PM
come to think of it, the election could've been a lot simpler if i threw in a question of "What's your favourite game?" and judged the candidate completely on their answer
it'd be a travesty, but simpler!

So, um?

@doppelgreener While working through the questions I wrote I was thinking how much easier things would have been if I had instead suggested questions like "what animal is your username based off of? Describe your favorite thing about that animal!" and "What is your favorite color and how does that represent your moderation style!"

@Rubiksmoose that second one is enough like an actual bogus interview question that it gave me an unpleasant physical reaction

@Rubiksmoose My favourite colour is green, which I'm pretty sure is none of the other mod's favourite colour, so that's clearly a fresh perspective I can bring to the team

10:20 PM
@doppelgreener lol

@Carcer hahaha you made me snort up hot tea and I don't appreciate it!
(the nose part of me especially)

@Rubiksmoose "My favorite colour is blue, which represents my moderation style because just thinking about being a moderator depresses me."
3

@doppelgreener It felt kind of gross typing it too...

@Carcer [sniff] that's ok

@BESW So...where do I submit my vote?

10:22 PM
@doppelgreener would you believe that I didn't even remember until after I typed it that you literally have green in your name

@doppelgreener XD
green is just objectively the best color anyway

Q: ModColorFix for Chat

CalvTJust a very very simple userscript that changes the moderator usernames in chat from blue to green. Requested by and built for @doppelgreener on becoming a mod. Link to Github Repo Link to install Any problems, ideas, etc, drop me a line here or at Github, and I'll see what I can do :)

@Carcer [blinking back tears] yes and it's fine i just need to be alone for a while

@Carcer that..honestly makes it funnier. 11/10 (I love that it was just below dopel's comment so much)

@V2Blast 2e, 5e, 1e|BECMI are close, CP2020. That'd be the list if breaking out D&Ds. Otherwise we'd get to add Traveller, Star Wars, and Tales from the Floating Vagabond (don't judge me!).

10:24 PM
@trogdor i can verify this

@Rubiksmoose "Wool"s a color, right?

@doppelgreener I thought as much, green is best

if it isn't i'd be wrong and i don't like that

@doppelgreener I didn't even think about it! I was just trying to riff on Akixkisu's question in the election chat about diversity!

@Carcer (i hope it's understood, and if not i'll assure you, everything is OK and i am actually having a hard time stopping sniggering over the course of this conversation)

10:27 PM
@doppelgreener we can't be wrong, we have a majority in here
XD
especially if we only count people who agree with us

@nitsua60 Errr... of course! What does it look like? ... well sheepish of course.

@doppelgreener I don't understand! You are DISTRAUGHT.
Cast adrift in a sea of despair by my callous thoughtlessness

i will go into the West and diminish
haunted by these moments for eternity

this was meant to be the age of Gren
(okay that was strained)

10:37 PM
@trogdor Favorite color is also green. So I can tell you are good people.

lol

well now I don't feel special anymore
I've changed my mind, my favourite colour is black

traitor!

@Carcer the color of my heart

like my soul entire wardrobe

10:39 PM
well it's sad to see Carer no longer exists within our bubble continuum

@V2Blast You should definitely get that looked at by a professional

@V2Blast ...are you a drow, perchance? :o

are their hearts also black?

(in my headcanon, Drow are melanistic through-and-through due to the effects of Faerzress)
(like if you cut one, their flesh would be as black as their skin)

ah that's just so dang silly
drow are a ridiculous thing though

10:41 PM
@trogdor they are XD

except Drzzztztztztztztztzt
he's not silly at all
:P

well that's silly, drow are black because they are cursed to punish them for their evil ways, and not because of any radiation. Why are you looking at me like that

@A.B. Well, usually there aren't just impromptu games happening on the spot in this particular chat room, the rest of the time it's either people planning out when to play a thing, etc. There is a ToA campaign in progress run by @nitsua60 but I don't know if there are additional openings (or if you've played ToA before), so you'd have to talk to nitsua about that.
Besides that, sometimes people will mention wanting to play something text-based in the general chat, and that's what this channel's often used for

In my headcanon, if you cut a drow Paul's Letter to American Christians comes out.

generally you'll have better luck asking about stuff in the General chat since most people don't check the other channels unless they're pinged
in other news, there's a line of emergency vehicles down my street

10:45 PM
Oh dear. I hope people are getting help.

not sure exactly what's going on but I counted at least 4 fire trucks, a few police cars, and one or two ambulances/EMS vehicles

oh dear!

that's a lot of vehicles

@BESW curse of Haaaaaaam

@Ash I can always count on you to recognize my deep Christian cuts.

apparently my mom has heard from a neighbor who heard from their local Whatsapp group that it was a "structural fire" of some sort

Yes, I wasn't meaning do it now, I was more asking if there are any games/campaigns/whatever you call them planned soon that would like a new player. Or not planned, whatever :-)
(I dun even know what that last sentence means.)

user15026
@BESW I swam in that ocean long enough it's in my pores now

Lol

10:58 PM
@V2Blast hopefully everyone is okay!

@BESW this still sounds amazing

New Sundown preview! "This preview of Sundown includes a Crash Course in Drifting, the Trait Appendix, the Consent Table, the Questionnaire, the Drifter Dossier, and Frogbeast, a short story set in Sundown. In short, it has everything you need to get into a game of Sundown."

@Shalvenay I feel like my "this channel" references now make my messages above very confusing :P
@A.B. What RPG systems/editions are you familiar with? What RPG systems/editions are you interested in playing?

11:17 PM
Yay! Thanks @BESW!
I'm actually a first-timer. I know D&D 5e quite well because I've twice nearly done a game with friends online, studied hte rulebook and made a character, and then it fell through. I've also read the rules for various other RPGs (e.g. Fate, Lady Blackbird) just in the spirit of window-shopping...
I do pick things like that up very fast. Any system would do as fasr as I'm concerned as far as I know, more whether people are prepared to put up with someone who met the system for the first time the day before yesterday!
Oh, I don't much care for totally free-form games, though I like them better in chat than by forum if it comes down to it.

Q: Does a component pouch automatically contain components?

NautArchAre there any written rules on whether or not component pouches, when purchased, contain components or if users have to find the components and put them in? If it's automatic, does it auto-fill when you get new spells?

Genre-wise, I enjoy most things - sword and sorcery, science fiction, superheroes - although I don't much care for the ultra-dark-and-grisly stuff, you know, like some of the World of Darkness games seem to be, the ones where the PCs being bloodthirsty killers is an essential part of the game.

you've put a lot of thought into this!
If nobody here is able to help you, you might look into Discord servers. @V2Blast has a generic RPG server for D&D and the like, and there are dedicated servers for games like Fate and Gumshoe.

@A.B. @Glazius is looking to do a Fellowship game (it's a fantasy-themed PbtA, but more oriented directly at the "beat the big bad" side of fantasy than the "crawl dungeons and get phat loots" side that Dungeon World focuses on)
there's also @nitsua60's ToA that I'm involved in

Putting a lot of thought into it is generally pretty good

11:29 PM
@A.B. Here's the general RPG server @BESW mentioned: discord.gg/ZSxrrgQ
I'm also a mod in /r/dndnext (reddit.com/r/dndnext) and its Discord server, which is obviously for D&D 5e: discord.gg/uucdJtd
And here's the smaller D&D/RPG server I helped start, Wholesome Adventuring Funville: https://discord.gg/ttEge3p
(People run a variety of RPGs there, though the main one is D&D 5e. Anyone who wants to can run a game there, and we get new campaigns posted there fairly regularly.)

I run short-form games from time to time as well (usually D&D 5e, depends largely if I have stuff I want to test or not though)

Oh yeah, I should be promoting that, shouldn't I? Looking to run at least a demo of Fellowship, a game about heroes who are the hopes of their people to confront the Overlord. tinyurl.com/FellowshipPlaybooks are the playbooks. It gives responsibility for detailing your people on you when you choose to play them and has an interesting threat resolution that focuses on cinematic setup and takedown.
