The first D&D group in which I was a player more than a GM, had a running joke that pre-dated my joining, in which the GM was an obscure deity who smited PCs when their players got cheeky about the plot.

@BESW I enjoy how this goes from feel-good-justice-but-maybe-not-great-for-DMing into a good DM moment.

DMs being fickle and wielding in-game power is something that often causes friction, but I think in this case the lesson at the end "we're in this together, talk to me" makes it a good move on the DM's part.

@AaronParrilla FWIW, I've had quite a bit of trouble with puzzles in my games in the past, and it took me a long time to find a formula that fits my current long-running group. In my experience, groups take very different approaches to puzzles, so you kind of have to try a few things and see what they like. My first 5e group loved puzzles and we could spend a whole session on a murder mystery or exploration puzzle, while my current group would rather breeze by for the combat and NPC-interactions.

@Carcer Also, I try to stray away from the MMO-RPG idea of a puzzle where they have to pick up on obscure clues to solve them. It often boils down to trial-and-error for the "puzzle-doors" in my experience (so I make it more interesting by after the first failure half of the floor disappears, and knowing that the next one would drop you into a 60 foot pit)

@AaronParrilla I have a few pdfs full of those. Lemme find the FOSS ones and a link to the source. I found that as long as there was a skip or "i don't wanna puzzle today" option, the players were more likely to enjoy them. The do the puzzle for the gold star worked well with my groups.

@DavidCoffron my party is composed of two veterans and two newbies, I know they will go through the puzzles with no problem, the thing is that if teamwork is not required, the two veterans can probably go on ahead leaving the other two behind (probably to their deaths) since, for some reason, both of them chose to create Chaotic Evil characters and disregard the other party members.

@MikeQ I found taking the ideas and implementing them in my dungeons pretty easy. I only took the ones that immediately appealed to me. 60 free ideas was a pretty nice find when I came across it, so I wasn't going to complain about it not being perfectly wrapped up in a bow.

The best reference I have is the SAW movie, where everyone dies (as usual) but at the end jigsaw reveals that they could have gone through the entire thing as a party (group) and everyone would have been alilve (putting the group above the individual in that case)

@AaronParrilla Usually when one player dominates the puzzles, it's not out of malice. They think that by solving the puzzle, they're helping the group. But from the DM's perspective, you can see this prevents other players from participating.

What I like to do is distribute the puzzle itself, so it can't be solved immediately. Let different players discover different clues, and discuss.

@AaronParrilla i did a puzzle once that was a mini Sudoku board. Only the player of the character interacting with it could work on it. The other characters were involved in a combat with endless waves of little enemies (because that's what the combat min/maxer liked to stomp on). Combat went until they fled the puzzle area or solved it.

@GcL Although in mine there was a high-level sorcerer battle in the background which in hindsight didn't work out. I wanted to make the world feel already at a high power level for the players to strive towards, but it was difficult to convince my players to flee like the ally told them to. Once they did though it was fun to have stray spells fly through the open hallways during the other fight

I once saw a somewhat sloppy but interesting approach: The puzzle was a magical obstacle. Each player was shown a different card, each with its own clue. Then the players had to discuss their clues and collaborate to find the solution.

Usually, go somewhere by rapid transport. ~~kidnap~~ extract someone while discovering the twist of that particular mission.

As a GM, I usually don't aim for very detail-driven gameplay, and players who try to literally capture everything I say, no matter how insignificant, feel like they might always just jump at me and say something like "a-HA! In session 6 you said the curtains were blue, and now they're indigo? What can explain this magic!"

Nothing so mechanical, but I guess you could call that 'mini milestones' .
IF we didn't sort out some of the "Who the hell is stealing all of the beer making supplies from the local farmers?" we would not then figure out where to confront the mini boss who was doing it (using his thugs to do so .... We tried to talk him out of it, which was where most of session three went, but we also figured out during that failed attempt that he's not the Big Boss behind it all ... and so on.

I think the coherent reading of the rules is that levitation doesn't end if you and the target become too distantly separated - you can maintain concentration on a spell even if you are outside the initial range of casting, as per sage advice - but that you're only capable of moving the subject if they're within the 60ft range
