A: 70s(?) science fiction novel: teenage boy builds his own spacecraft which pulls/pushes gravity, is stranded on Mars when a vacuum tube burns out

Organic MarbleThis is probably Welcome to Mars by James Blish. It did not, in fact, take him very long to find out the trouble. It was in the one logically vulnerable spot in the system, and the one about which he could do precisely nothing: the 6BQ5 power tube. It was burned out.

12:58 AM
@Null "sleuthed" by checking something else entirely, actually. And it accidentally made me discover that viewing split votes forced an instant recalculation (due to some pattern on which ones of my posts were oddly UVed recently, I had a hunch which ones were likely to have been removed UV)
but yeah, I can unerstand how the morning was busy, ahah :D

Q: 60s(?) scifi story: astronaut comes back from space, slowly gets covered in rock, goes on a rampage

Tom ClearyI remember a story from when I was a kid so it would be most likely early 60s. An astronaut comes back from space but starts turning into a monster. He is slowly being covered in rock and is having trouble breathing... The scientist try to cut the rock but can't get him out... Covered in rock...

@Adamant in universe 100% no, his mother wasn't Jewish (or ultimately having any matrilinear or any linear for that matter descent to Abraham/Isaac nor anyone known to convert using formal Giyur)

@DVK-on-Ahch-To oh hey, long time no see
(not that we've talked that much to each other, but still)

@Jenayah Someone mentioned my name in vain in chat :) And it was an interesting question :) Congrats, saw a bunch of good answers you been posting. Good work!

Thanks! :) blushes
so what's up?

@Jenayah Disappointment mostly. Fantastic Beasts 2 was... i can't even tell how below expectations it was. Although I gotta admire how they ret-connned "why didn't Dumbledore do this spoiler free thing before he did it in HP books" :)

@DVK-on-Ahch-To ah! Still haven't seen it, though one of the roommates told me he wanted his cinema ticket reimbursed for "the ending cliffhanger".
At which point I told him they were planning five films for the series.
Funny how a human face can get distorted sometimes :D

2:14 AM
@Jenayah Honestly, I read fanfics that were better quality - plot AND writing quality wise, than anything JKR put put since the 7 books. I literally abandoned Harry Potter and the Cursed Sellout Fanfic script 2/3 of the way in. I NEVER abandon a book mid-way. Ever. No matter how bad.

@DVK-on-Ahch-To well, you can get away by saying it's a theater play, I guess. :P

@Jenayah That's lawyering! :)

Whatever works :D

@DVK-on-Ahch-To it wasn't serious

2:33 AM
Superman can't literally be Jewish; he's an alien, the Kryptonians have some weird religion around Rao, and his foster parents are Christian, I think.
No sign of him ever converting, either.
It was more a nod to his creators being Jewish, and his character possibly being informed by that.

Q: Looking for a short story about world peace achieved through a coin flip

BroklyniteAside from possibly the idea of world peace being a fantasy (har har) I don’t remember this story having any particular F/SF elements about it except that it was either written by an author associated with SF and/or came out of an SF anthology for whatever reason. Peter SmollenThis has bugged me for some time re an anthology of Dark Fantasy stories I read in the 1980's. @Stormblessed generally speaking, it's not advised to speak about how and why a user got suspended. There's a suspension reason displayed on a user's profile, and that's kind of the most "official" you're going to get, unless the user is willing to talk about it when the suspension is lifted. Doesn't mean you can't try to figure out things on your own, just don't speak at lengths about it ;) (or, be cryptic)
Mmmmh, this reads more dystopian than I'd have wanted it to

4:08 PM
@Jenayah why’s it “not advised”?

MatthewPowers Gives “orders” to paper-- stuff like following specific people, folding into specific shapes, carrying very light things (like powder) around, but limited to paper. Feel free to come up with extra stuff around the power

@Stormblessed basically a combination of privacy matters (only the user and the mods know exactly what happened), and to prevent flame wars about "what? But userXYZ may have done X, but that's not worthy of a suspension! Uh, the powers that be are stupid" etc, etc
Hell John, and welcome to the SF & Fantasy Stack. Just to be clear, are you looking for the series in general and for the third book specifically, or do you know what the series is and are you looking for just the third book? — SQB Nov 23 '16 at 12:06

Do suspended users get the rep. back later?

@Stormblessed Yes.

@Stormblessed yep, and if their posts are upvoted/downvoted while they're away, they gain it as well
Same goes for bounties, acceptances, -100 rep malus from spam/RA posts, etc, etc
Works the same for badges. Actually I think badges are even recorded into the user activity page
And since you can't lose badges (except for tag badges), well
Or maybe some powers that be can revoke badges manually but I think that like never happens
13
A: Why does reversing serial upvoting not reverse the Mortarboard badge?

OdedAs a matter of policy, awarded badges do not get reversed. The only exception to this rule is fraud. If we are made aware of badges that were awarded fraudulently (sock puppetry, maliciously-intended voting irregularity or other), they will be revoked.

^ yeah, that. Basically they probs wouldn't do it for a bronze Mortarboard badge, but may consider it for an iffy gold tag badge and the powers that come with it

5:25 PM
@Jenayah Why does it show as 0, then?
@Jenayah what does “malus” mean?

5:56 PM
@Stormblessed because by design, the displayed rep status at 1 for the suspension duration
@Stormblessed when one of your posts gets six spam/RA flags, it's deleted and you lose 100 reputation

Q: What would happen if Voldemort kept creating Horcruxes?

Vadzim SavenokI know there is a limit on how much Voldemort could tear his soul, but if he surpassed the limit his soul could handle, and he died: wouldn't he just be resurrected by one of his horcruxes yet again? Is it some kind of loophole?

It doesn't seem POB, but it strikes me as "unclear what you're asking", so I'm thinking to leave it closed.

It's one of those -speculation questions, where POB is used as shorthand for "it's not in the books, you're asking us to pull an answer out of thin air", until an expert comes along and quotes since corner of Pottermore to create a half-decent answer.

@SQB It's more than 2 years old, but OK :-) #ModAbuse
@Jenayah Honestly I don't understand what the question is asking. "What would happen" seems very broad, but it seems the OP is thinking of some specific scenario.
"if he surpassed the limit his soul could handle, and he died" - what limit?
"Is it some kind of loophole?" - loophole in what?

Is that a crab in a blond King Kong costume?
I'm curious. How is it that people remember the author being British or US? It's probably due to not being a native speaker, but a good chunk of English-language names don't sound too British or US.
