@JasonSalaz Oh, so now that you're a Github employee, you're allowed to stalk everyone who makes a comment about github? ;)

No, now that I'm a GitHub employee, I'm linked to and read all the articles talking about GitHub and competitors especially.

jrg
Ever better.
How is life at GH?

Pretty nice.
I have a Thunderbolt display sitting on the floor
awaiting my desk being set up.
which I should probably go do now

jrg
1:05 AM
Nice...

1:50 AM
Anyone know about this?

Q: Save multiple photos from Mail on iPhone

ruddfawcettI send a lot of emails to myself from my Mac to my iPhone containing logos that I am designing, normal pictures or otherwise. However, I have a problem with the Mail app. Whenever I send too many photos, or photos that are very big, I have to go through the message and save each photo individua...

@JasonSalaz Lucky!!!!!!!

What time zone is stack exchange based on?
2

3:24 AM
@ruddfawcett GMT.
@JasonSalaz Aww, I wants.

4:00 AM
@Mahnax Thanks!

@ruddfawcett No problem.
You can also look to see the current SE time here:

@ruddfawcett Good question!!

Oh, hello @davies and @moshe.

4:24 AM
@Mahnax Hello

4:34 AM
Hi

3 hours later…
7:12 AM
apple.stackexchange.com/?tab=featured features a bountied question with the recently created tag
apple.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/… finds no questions with an active bounty:
Is that truly a discrepancy? Or do I misunderstand something?
— sorry, ignore that question. A typo in one of my URLs.

7 hours later…
2:24 PM
So far so good. SSD gets me to my desktop in under 20 seconds.
WWDC Tickets are up.

3:02 PM
@daviesgeek I'm totally serious. If that isn't the Leopard logo, it's close enough that I didn't notice the difference, and when I saw the Leopard logo, I associated with your avatar and not with the OS.

A: Put the ⌃⌥⇧⌘⎋⏏⌫↑⇡↖⇞⇥ characters somewhere for people to copy/paste

stuffeLooking at this question and answer: Add characters to the press and hold character picker in OS X Lion I managed to amend the automated replacement options when you press and hold a key down, and made this:

3:40 PM
@Moshe Tickets are gone

I think it sold out 112 minutes or something (I was scurrying to get things arranged this morning)
Apple sends me an email asking me to fax them a document. Blink pause blink head-tilt. (repeat)
The ironic thing is that the document they (presumably) want in paper form has never existed in paper form. Forming an LLC in Minnesota is a 100% electron and bits process these days.

4:05 PM
@DanielLawson I'll add more details and answer later this evening

4:21 PM
If not for the dev program requirement, I doubt they'd have lasted 12 minutes.

A: How can I expand the number of special characters I can type using my keyboard?

stuffeIn addition to simply using the press-and-hold method included in @jtbandes answer, it is also possible to customise the list of options that you are presented with when you hold down a key. In the example below I configured the "Q" key to show a list of special character codes corresponding to ...

@DanielLawson There you go. Also, some homework in the answer too :)

5:04 PM
@stuffe Thanks. I can't bounty it yet, but believe me, I will.

5:21 PM
@DanielLawson WOW!! Well. I am totally gonna keep it!!!
The site is hoppin' today
@jrg ¡Hola!

jrg
5:39 PM
Howdy @daviesgeek!

What's up?
Did ya hear about WWDC 2012?

jrg
Remembering that we've got a release tomorrow, meaning i'm going to be hammered, wishing I could to do WWDC 2012, and then remembering that I'm cheap.

@jrg Oh, right! A release!

jrg
@daviesgeek How're you doing?

@jrg Ok. I have half of my final finished, but I'm dead tired from rehearsal last night
Mmm....Ubuntu 12.04 looks like it borrowed quite a bit from OS X.
I'm gonna have to try it out

jrg
5:45 PM
Depends on what you mean "borrowed", since the mockups have been up since June-ish 2010. ;)

@jrg WWDC musta done somethin', because our site is hoppin'
@jrg I remember that...

jrg
(although we had that discussion before hand, back when we first met)

(Goes to check the sandbox chat room)

jrg
@daviesgeek Really? I challenge you guys to get to half of what we'll hit on Sunday.

@jrg the main thing copied would be the "dock"

jrg
5:48 PM
@daviesgeek It's called a "launcher", and Windows has had it for a long time, its practically standard for desktops. No dig. ;)

@jrg Yah, but IIRC, Ubuntu's was on top, like a menu bar, rather than on the side, looking like an OS X dock :-)

jrg
@daviesgeek It was, but you can move the Windows launcher to the side as well. Its just not the default. ;)

@jrg I guess I haven't messed with Windows enough to figure that out.

jrg

We talked about the Ubuntu login screen, not the menubar/launcher/dock
in Sandbox, Sep 8 '11 at 18:51, by jrg
And Apple borrowed Ubuntu's login screen. ;)

jrg
5:52 PM
There was that as well.
@daviesgeek dang, you search like a ninja moderator.

@jrg :-P I'm good!

I'm looking at Windows 7 and yet Mac OS X and yet Ubuntu, WHAT IS GOING ON HERE
4
Windows 7 taskbar, OS X Global Menu Bar (including blue search icon!), Ubuntu wallpaper.

jrg
Exactly.

Oooh, yeah, @jrg that OS X screenshot is out of date...

jrg
Very true, but it gets the point across.

5:54 PM
what?

jrg
That its the best of both worlds in many peoples opinions. In others... well, its the worst of both.
anyway, i'm constantly getting you guys off-topic. :(

@jrg To quote bmike:
Feb 9 at 19:59, by bmike
@daviesgeek everything is on topic in chat AFAIK

more or less. certainly less rigorous than the site.

Jason! (He lives.)

Most definitely.

jrg
5:57 PM
Very true.

@jaberg is back! (Or maybe I just haven't seen him 'cuz I haven't been around much)

No, I've been very busy and not very present. I owe @Gigili an email too. I'm a bad, bad man.
Training for a new seasonal gig (that may well go part time) at REI. Tired of paying retail for my gear ;)
Also a ton going on at Hack Factory and here at the house--spring cleaning, closet swapping, etc. I need a nap!

@jrg Do you have a high res screenshot of Ubuntu 12.04?
I couldn't find one on the web.

jrg
@daviesgeek Do you want a doctored (customized) desktop or a stock one?

And on that note, I need to relocate. Catch up with you guys from the Hack Factory.

jrg
6:01 PM
I can get you either, one will just take longer than the other.

@jrg Whatever. I just need a shot of the launcher :-)

jrg
sure.

@jrg Haha! Waiting for that edit ;-)

jaberg, Gigili was in here last night talking about it.
Don't mean to pile it on or anything, just letting you know :).

jrg
There you go @daviesgeek
i can get you whatever ones you want, I've got my laptop right in front of me. :P

6:03 PM
@jrg Awesome! Works for me
20 hours ago, by Gigili
Actually, I give up.
@jrg You still there?

jrg
Da.

You don't happen to have a running Windows version do you?

jrg
I've got Windows 7, yes.
Which launcher config do you want? Left, right or bottom? ;)

@jrg Ooh. Can I get a screenshot of the taskbar on the left? (curious how it will compare)

jrg
Sure thing.
brb, rebooting

6:10 PM
kk
@jrg Thanks so much!!

lolol.

@jtbandes Yah.

jrg
One left launcher screenshot, coming up!

Under Two hours!!

There's always the scholarship application, though :D

6:13 PM
@jrg Awesome!!
@jtbandes Hmmm....didn't know about that.

@daviesgeek Yep. This year they're allowing anyone 13 & up to attend. There's a student scholarship you can apply to.

@jrg Awesome! Thanks!! Almost done....
@jtbandes Wrong page...

whups, fixed.

@jtbandes However, that's interesting. I would be interested in going. 'Specially since I'm so near.

6:15 PM
@daviesgeek that does help, as I don't think they're paying for transportation.

@jtbandes It's an hour and a half from where I live. I don't think that would be much of a problem

jrg
See, if you managed to get a session on apple.SE scheduled, you could get SE to sponsor you!
Including transportation (or part of it)...

@jrg That'd be cool.
I'm thinking like 3 years down the road, when I have a license...

jrg
Ok, rebooting again. I can't stand this font rendering. :\

I'll probably apply for the scholarship, but I don't know how my employer this summer would feel about me taking a week to go... :P

jrg
6:18 PM
@jtbandes Heheh. Should probably delete that so they don't figure it out.

@jtbandes Yah. Don't see that happenin'
My employer watches WWDC with me. :-P

nice :)

OPENSTEP dock
OS X Lion dock
Ubuntu 12.04 dock
Windows 7 taskbar

I like how NeXT's was recycling.

I got to go to WWDC'11 for a couple days courtesy of my employer last summer, though :D

jrg
6:20 PM
My employer watches the Ubuntu equivalent with me.

@jtbandes har har har.

@jrg Haha!
@jtbandes LUCKY!!!!!

jrg
@daviesgeek ;)

I work Mondays during the summer, so we follow the liveblog, then watch the keynote later.

jrg
That's neat. Wish I could do that.

6:22 PM
@jrg Yah. I'm hoping that I'm working Mondays again this summer for that specific reason

jrg
@daviesgeek See, I just have a week where all I can do is stay glued to IRC and my computer as I listen to all the different sessions.
And then i'm done.
until the next UDS, about 6 months later.

I'm gonna have to post that screenshot on my blog

Whether or not Apple runs into the Law of Large Numbers, WWDC registration will at least run into Zeno's Paradox.

jrg
Although for the week after that, I'll be listening to some of the other sessions, since they'll always have all the cool security sessions AT THE SAME TIME.
@jtbandes Hehehe.

Yah. AFAIK, Apple doesn't stream anything else. Videos are available afterwards, but I'm by no means a developer, so I don't watch them

jrg
6:26 PM
Yeah, I wish they did that as well. Even if I don't use a Mac, and I don't do iOS development, some of their sessions are still interesting.

what is Zeno's Paradox?

Chemistry.SE is now in beta!
And I just asked the first question!

And this one too (don't shun me):

@jrg Going back to this, do mods have extra special search features?

jrg
@daviesgeek No. We just get very good at it eventually.

6:27 PM
Some mod needs to kick @jtbandes out of the chat room!
2
(kidding)

@daviesgeek :D I know... I'm just feeling blasphemous today.

jrg
@daviesgeek see, you can joke about that. If I were to make a joke like that, I'd lose my diamond faster than it'd take for Aarthi to get over here. (and that doesn't take long...)

@jrg Ah. I'm good with searching, so I'm good with searching in the chat :-)
@jrg Really? You guys are that strict?

jrg
@daviesgeek Yes and no, because if we're honest, if they were that strict, their wouldn't be any mods left. ;)

I've been kicked out of chat several times by @DanielLawson :-)
(actually, he was just messing around)
@jrg Ah.
Oooh. Another AU user! Hello @Imnotthisperson !

jrg
6:31 PM
What is @imnotthisperson doing here?

@jrg Do you know him/her?

HEY I am not that person

@Imnotthisperson Haha!
@Imnotthisperson So what's an AU user like you doin' over here?

jrg
LOL. @davissgeek sorta. :)

Whoops. Didn't mean to post that, though I was thinkin' about it. :-]
D'ling Ubuntu 12.04 now...

6:37 PM
@daviesgeek nothing :p

jrg
@daviesgeek I saw that. ;)

@jrg I figured someone did...
@Imnotthisperson Ha ha!
/me waits impatiently for Ubuntu to download...

jrg
Are you sure you're downloading the right ISO?

ubuntu-12.04-beta2-desktop-i386.iso
AFAIK, that's the right one.

jrg
Uhhh... you could do that, but I'd recommend getting the nightly ISO instead, it'll have all the updates applied already.

6:41 PM
^ LOL ^
@jrg Where do I find that?

@jrg Ok. Thanks
It's been so long since I've been in the Linux world that I've almost completely forgotten what everything means when d'ing a distro

jrg
@Imnotthisperson .... no, thats funny in the ubuntu rooms, but not in a den of mac users.

@Imnotthisperson Haha!!!

6:46 PM
@jrg Even I cant agree with this pic :P

I get it, though the analogy doesn't really work for OS X. However, I completely agree with the PC and Linux definitions.

jrg
Heh. ;)

> Few people have the ability to take care of it, so don't expect any help
LOL
> Cannot withstand rough play
That, I don't agree with....
> essentially useless

/me just got an email from someone offering to port one of his absolutely unpopular iOS apps to Android/Blackberry/WP7...

Wrong-o

@jtbandes Ugh.

jrg
@Imnotthisperson That is accurate. Mostly.

@Imnotthisperson Haha! So true!!
'cept I'd flip Linux/Windows on the top row.
I need to get back to work. Bye!

jrg
Cya @daviesgeek

:)
bye ,good night

6:59 PM
@daviesgeek I think I've kicked you out of chat twice. Once to answer your question and show you that it is utterly inconsequential to kick someone out of chat because you can be back here in all of three seconds, the other time because you kept saying you needed to leave and get other stuff done, so I thought I'd help you along (I wish someone would do that with me... I'm terrible at leaving when I need to).

@DanielLawson can't kick yourself?
I know you can in IRC... endless fun.

Well there's this button in the upper right that says "leave"...

touché :P

but no, only mods can kick, and at the same time, mods can't be kicked, so no.
:-(
yet another way the ◆ ruins things.

jrg
Yeah, we can't kick ourselves. :(

7:02 PM
Unless we use that "leave" button.

jrg
but thats boring.

3 mins ago, by Daniel Lawson
but no, only mods can kick, and at the same time, mods can't be kicked, so no.

7:44 PM
@DanielLawson I know.

Interesting realization.... when Safari reloads all its tabs, it might not be just because it's low on memory... a WebProcess crash causes the same thing.

speaking of getting out of here
phone calls held me back from lunch, and now I'm very hungry.
yay 2PM lunches.

8:02 PM
@JasonSalaz Yup. Fun stuff :-)

8:16 PM
Those of you who are over 5K, can you please vote on suggested tag synonyms? @stuffe's has been sitting for awhile, but I just created mine

@daviesgeek upvote 81 of my answers then ;)

@jtbandes Ok. :-)
@jtbandes There's some rep for ya.
I'll upvote some more later...
Also, those of you with suggested edits privileges, can you accept my edits on 10 tag wikis?

@daviesgeek I was joking... but thanks!
I'm 60 rep closer to being able to vote on synonyms...

8:59 PM
@jtbandes I know.

@daviesgeek some of your edits aren't that great though. exFAT for example. It's not just for flash drives. Though that was the first intended use of it.

@IanC Oh. Just a sec...
@IanC Try it now

yea, that's better. marginally though. :)
sometimes i think if it's going to be a one liner, a link to the wikipedia entry following it would be a good idea.

9:31 PM
@IanC Not in the excerpt. I can't do a link in the excerpt.

9:44 PM
Hello all

@ruddfawcett ¡Hola!

Hey @daviesgeek
I have to say, you are a very active editor!

@ruddfawcett :-)
A little too active for some of the users. :-)

I finally got above 500 :-)
I find Ask Different quite addictive.

I'm making up for what I haven't done in the past few weeks
@ruddfawcett Congrats!
@ruddfawcett Yup. Me too
@ruddfawcett Ask (space) Different. (I'm picky, as well some of the mods)

9:47 PM
What are you talking about? :P
I just edited it

@ruddfawcett Thank you :-)

No problem

@ruddfawcett Whoa! For a brand new user, you are waaay ahead!!
Almost 600 rep in 11 days!!!

Thanks :)
I'm kind of on 24/7

@NathanGreenstein Hey! How you been?

9:51 PM
@daviesgeek Not bad. How about you?

@NathanGreenstein What's the Ask Different Blog URL again?

Pretty good. I'm "studying" for my "final"

Hehe... Which subject?

@ruddfawcett For me, in my first 11 days I had 50 rep. ;-)
@ruddfawcett All of them. I'm homeschooled.

9:53 PM
As I see in your profile :-)

So...this year's final consists of an 1100-1600 word paper on two periods in Western Culture and 2 artists, 1 author, 2 composers, and one historical event from each, as well as a short quiz in Spanish

Nice.
@NathanGreenstein If I wrote an article, would it be possible to see it on the blog?

@ruddfawcett If you've got an article, ping me in the Blog Chat Room and I'll set you up with an account on the blog. You can post a draft and we'll review it and schedule it to be posted.

@ruddfawcett Yah. I'm pretty sure I'm way over 1600 words, and I'm only halfway through the paper, but that's okay.
@NathanGreenstein Can you take a look at my suggested edits? There are 10 tag wiki edits of mine pending :-)

Cool

9:57 PM
@daviesgeek Just heading out, but I'll look when I get home

People seem to have forgotten there's a suggested edits queue....

I'll see what I can come up with. Any suggestions?

@NathanGreenstein Ok. Just so you are aware of them :-)
Ah. Another mod. Hello @DanielLawson

@daviesgeek I remember the suggested edits queue. It's the thing I ignore if one user puts more than one or two entries in it.

Oh, and @Mahnax

9:58 PM
:-p

@DanielLawson Well there's 10 waiting for you

10>2
thus, ignoring it

@DanielLawson Thanks!!

Lol

@daviesgeek Hello!

9:59 PM
(sarcasm)

no problem. any time.

(see what I have to put up with here?)

Hey @daviesgeek can I get that link for your high res avatar?

I'm so excited.
