@IanC Someone here was saying it worked well (up to the point where it crashes your mac)
@jtbandes Or stack mac on top of one with the lid shut. sleepy time

A: Why would I disable swap file in Mac OS X?

w00tI'll be the naysayer here: I disabled swap on my late 2008 unibody macbook pro and it improved performance noticably: Less waiting, faster switching between applications. Mind you, I keep an eye on my free memory and I have 6GB installed. The few times that I hit the memory limit, the system cra...

@bmike thanks man! I was wondering if you'd heard of anyone trying it. I'll avoid it for now. I'm contemplating a second SSD so I'm 100% SSD.

@IanC It's fun to play with a machine where you don't care it crashes.
@IanC I'm so ticked with the Apple SSD. On one of the iMacs I was seeing 5k iops for some tasks. Amazingly, blindingly, stunningly fast when you're used to spindles.
oh - yay - gravatar finally has kicked in for me.
the chilly feet are back

I could probably handle watching memory. It's got 8GB and I don't usually push that, but then again I have paging on to help with that. Mostly I want it to stop paging out and back in the wrong memory-mapped files for my DB app.

I have an SSD in there now but it's not my primary drive. I may make a second SSD my primary drive.

no
We're all over there -->

what's up?

i feel somewhat silly asking, but can I ask for an upvote on my answer?
there's a bounty attached, and I feel like I have tried to help OP the most
but since the question isnt popular my question got less than two votes

you probably can
it's generally frowned upon

7:05 AM
can I ask you?

still waiting for a link.

A: Switch internal monitor off by software (script/terminal/shortcut/…)

MiloszIf I understand it correctly, you want to only be using your external display and have the internal display to be shut off. To achieve this, you want to put your macbook in clamshell mode. To do this you must have your macbook attached to         a) an ex...

having a quick look at the comments to my answer you can tell I have spend some time trying to help the OP
since we've come to the conclusion that the question does not in fact reflect OP's problem, I moreover suggest the question be removed after the bounty's been assigned

7:21 AM
@JasonSalaz you there?

hi
I agree with you wrt. the fact that he is asking the wrong question, but we don't really have a good course of action to respond to the XY Problem.
1
Q: How to address the XY problem in this question, and a potential problem with one of its answers?

AustinPlease note that I have not submitted an answer to this question -- this is not about competition for rep, who's "more right", or hurt feelings. Here's the original title and text before I made minor edits (which you can view at the question page): Ask a password to start an App ? Is it...

Moderators also don't delve into "correctness" of an answer.
I wouldn't dream of taking any action tonight. I'd certainly want input from my fellow ♦'s.
@DanielLawson @bmike @NathanGreenstein @KyleCronin ^^

Yes, I see what you mean.
In my humble opinion, the entire thread might be confusing to other users looking for a solution to an actual problem concerned with dual monitors/clamshell mode/whatever
the question is misleading, which results in answers dispersed among different topics

7:52 AM
I generally agree.

@Milosz Nice conversation on how hard it is to shape questions here.
I find one of two things work really, really well for community spaces like wiki and here is to be very clear about what role you choose for a particular question.
Role A) - shaper, editor, commenter
Role B) - expert answerer
When I try to do both, not only is it hard for me to figure out what I'm really trying to do without domineering the entire discussion (even when it's the last thing I'm trying to do and consciously take pains to not dominate) but it is confusing to others at best.
2
When you see more questions like this one (and your criticism is very valid from my point of view so I encourage you to seek out more like this for improvement) - you can decide if you want to answer it or try to improve it as an editor.
Rather than answer the question, try to engage the OP, add clear, analytical comments to raise a discussion on it. Link to the question on chat and see what others think.
Often, having someone to shape a question is far more valuable than being one of ten people that can actually answer it.

1:50 PM
@Milosz The comment thread indicates that OP does seem to be somewhat confused about what s/he is looking for, but the question itself is well-formed and on-topic. Whether the OP's question solves the OP's problem is a separate question from whether an answer to the posted question would be helpful to future readers. The answer to the second is clearly yes, so the question should not be closed or deleted, IMO. Also, while a bounty is pending, a question cannot be closed or deleted.

Q: What are the shutter speed and ISO ranges for the iPhone 4S camera?

bmikeDespite some googling, I can't find any information on the hardware limits of the camera in the iPhone 4S. What ISO and shutter speeds are possible from the still camera? I know the exposure is programmed and you can't choose ISO or shutter speed, but I'm looking to at least know what the ranges...

The bmike-con is back.
(bmike icon)

You'd think the ISO / shutter speed would be documented somewhere...
@JasonSalaz Yes - pixels are back :-) My gravy tar account is back in business.

Hello

6:35 PM
@ruddfawcett Hello!
Hey! Look what I found! A high res version of my avatar!!

6:46 PM
@daviesgeek That's so... original. I've never seen it before. Actually, I just came across the Leopard box in my basement and momentarily wondered what daviesgeek's avatar was doing in my basement.

@stuffe ping ^
If it doesn't collapse to the user's name, Daniel, it didn't work.
Also, pinging does work even if autocomplete doesn't show it. @stuffe just got a ping in this line too.

I have no luck with @@.
Well, I just sent him a message via his meta post, so that should work.
His invention is so amazingly awesome, I want to bounty it, but it's only in chat and meta posts at present, so I can't.

7:09 PM
What's this @@ stuff about?
@DanielLawson I want to answer your question, but also let stuffe get that bounty... perhaps I'll answer everything except that option :P

7:24 PM
@jtbandes Secret ♦ handshake.

@JasonSalaz lol. Well I notice that when I type @@ a list of usernames comes up, whereas usually with @ I have to start typing the name first.

Does it work with normal users?
There was some restriction, though I forget what.

What's it supposed to do?

Umm, hello.
The one who suggested that he can help me shipping the iPod from US to Germany is gone, should I wait?
I'm not even sure if it's a right thing to do.
Eh, he's here.
Hello @jaberg, I waited for your email but received nothing so far.
Should I wait more?

9:19 PM
@JasonSalaz It didn't when I was 10k - but you can type and start to see the interface. Even as a mod - @ @ pings don't work so well for me in practice.
@daviesgeek no way - who on earth would have made something so similar to your artful avatar?

The UX is kind of crap, I agree.

@DanielLawson Link pls!

10:00 PM
@bmike :-)
@DanielLawson Really? Or are you being sarcastic?
@Gigili Keep on pinging @jaberg. He'll respond eventually. :-)

@daviesgeek Heh, thanks for the tip.

@Gigili :-) He'll come around sometime.
@DanielLawson Doesn't the Leopard logo look like this?

@daviesgeek Of course, but I'm afraid it'll be too late.
Actually, I give up.

@Gigili Any why would that be?

@daviesgeek The whole process is quite complicated for my mind.

10:07 PM
:-)

jrg
@daviesgeek Hello!

@jrg Hey! How ya doin'?

Actually, I think the price in amazon.com plus shipping from US to Germany is the price in amazon.de __ Otherwise everyone would do what I want to do.

@Gigili :-)

jrg
10:22 PM
@daviesgeek I'm doing alright, yourself?

@jrg I'm studying for "finals".
Actually, I'm writing my 1100-1600 word paper for my final that will more than likely be over 3000 words.

jrg
Oh cool. Those are "fun".

Yah. Beats having to go to class all day, though
@jrg How's being an AU mod?

jrg
@daviesgeek uh, "fun"
means I don't have much time to spend doing development

@jrg :-(

jrg
10:27 PM
But its still fun. Well worth the time I put into it, since there is something incredibly satisfyingly about hitting the "delete" button about 20 times a day.

@jrg Sounds fun!

jrg
It is. You should give it a try sometime. :)

I'm planning on most likely running for mod when the election comes around

jrg
Planning on it? I don't think you have a choice, i'll hax the system and nominate you if you don't.

@jrg Well, I can hit the delete button more than 20 times without being a mod.

jrg
10:30 PM
@Gigili Well, yes. But is it instantaneous deletion? I think not!

@Gigili Haha!

And it's not fun at all, because nothing special happens and I get errors.

jrg
Hehe.

Haha!
I need to get back to my paper, so TTYL @jrg and @Gigili

jrg
Cya @daviesgeek. Best of luck with your paper.

10:31 PM
Bye.

@jrg Haha! (just saw that)
@jrg Thanks!

I just got my SSD. What's the fastest way to get back up on running on 10.7.3 with a Time Machine backup (external disk via usb 2.0) and a Lion 10.7.0 DVD?

Q: How do I get back up and running?

MosheI just got an SSD for my White Unibody MacBook. What's the fastest way to get back up on running on 10.7.3 with a Time Machine backup (on an external disk via usb 2.0) and a Lion 10.7.0 DVD? Can I restore directly from backup? Do I need to install 10.7.0 first? Do I need to run System Update aft...
