7:00 PM
@JasonSalaz Ah. Indeed, it should be soon. Or not. Apple marches to the beat of its own drum, not that of the technorati.

@jaberg She tried to use it today for email and such, but it's quite a bit of a change from the web interface of Yahoo and the Mail app

@daviesgeek Thats why she has you.

Yes, it is why she has me

oh hey, and look at this: allthingsd.com/20120209/…
Man I am spoiled by one-boxing, and am so sad when it doesn't work. I wonder if they can hook into Readability for most other things.

@JasonSalaz Awesome!!

7:03 PM
I'm eligible for iPhone update in March. Interesting dilemma: 4 > $s or iPad (1g) > iPad (whatever might be on the horizon)

you thought it would one box an allthingsd article?

I expect it to onebox everything.

So do I.

It would be so nice if it did.

I really wish there was an option to force it to one-box

7:05 PM
That doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Allt'ings is a fairly reliable source—with hooks into Apple. If Darymple confirms it you can pretty much take it to the bank.

@JasonSalaz Why not?

(As much as I detest the rumor mill)

Ideally it would intelligently one box, again, ala. readability.
@daviesgeek What does it mean to 'force it' to one box? It should if it can, it shouldn't if it can't.

@JasonSalaz WOAH! New bits would be exciting. I'm a bit surprised that they would release something so soon after Valentine's day but since their return policy is so user friendly - perhaps that covers anyone with buyer's remorse that might want a gift but for it to be the latest / greatest... The timing might be quite great, the more I think about it.

7:05 PM
@JasonSalaz Oh, right.
@JasonSalaz Yeah, sorry, stupid remark.

(I got the all things d link from DF/Gruber, just FWIW.)

I was really thinking that I would miss the announcement, since I don't regularly read any blogs, etc.

Gruber linked it because "D" is usually solid. If he had confirmation he would have added a "little birdie" comment.

But thanks @JasonSalaz, now I don't have to worry about it.

Darymple seems to confirm: loopinsight.com/2012/02/09/…

7:09 PM
@JasonSalaz In the picture in that article, is that Tim Cook?

You're going to laugh, but.
I haven't read the article yet, I'm catching up on other stuff and working.
I saw the headline, linked to it for jaberg's case, it's in my read queue.

Oh.
I didn't really read it either, I just skimmed it.

P.S. The image filename is ipad-cook.png. Your best rational is as good as mine.

@JasonSalaz I just saw that.
Like right as you said it.
And I was coming back to say that.

I was in my read queue too, but I hadn't gotten there yet. Appreciate the link though, may have just headed off a little client remorse.

7:13 PM
Ok, so I have a question for all you Lion users. Would you recommend upgrading to Lion? I have heard some bad things about Lion, so I haven't upgraded yet, and probably won't for a while.

do it

And yes, that photo is "TC" (as those who pretend to know him like to call him.)

My boss upgraded and he said that he should have waited about six months.

unless you need PPC / Rosetta compatibility

If you don't need to run Rosetta apps, do it.

7:14 PM
@JasonSalaz And I need to check that out.

I upgraded on the first day.
I have no regrets.

@JasonSalaz I figured

Also day one.
No regrets

Are there problems? Yes
Should you consider the extent of your required compatibility? yes

Have you had any problems with Wi-fi connectivity?

7:15 PM
Should you have asked us this question? probably not

@JasonSalaz :-)

Nathan has mentioned having the "No Wifi after waking from sleep" problem, I've never seen it.

Needed to make some slight workflow adjustments and still don't always love the autosave stuff--or having projects "surprise me" on restart--but overall I don't miss Snow Leopard for any reason and my experience has been good.

Ok, my boss had a major problem with Wi-fi disconnecting
He had to constantly be pinging a website to get the Wi-fi to stay on.

The latest patch supposedly fixed the wifi issues--or at least "some" of them

7:16 PM
Versions has saved my bacon, once.

(Can't group all wifi problems into a single group because all too often its crappy routers.)

Resume is helpful, though a bit of a nuisance. Probably the same workflow adjustments jaberg is talking about.

I just don't want to upgrade a laptop that is my Mom's computer and will possible have problems. I don't (1) have to to deal with the issues (2) have to put her into a situation where she has to deal with it.
I would definitely upgrade my own laptop, if I had one.
@jaberg My boss is a webmaster/web developer
He doesn't have a crappy router.

An argument can be made to never break something that's working. That being said, more and more apps are going to depend on Lion and I find the changes to be an overall win. By my own admission, I'm not a "finder junkie". I open programs--mostly using Quicksilver--and do my work. I like swipes. I'm happy with multiple desktops. I like it.

He can't, because he relies on it for work.

7:19 PM
You say that, but I've replaced a lot of crappy routers for professionals. ;) That being said, it was probably due to the Lion bug that has been patched.

@jaberg I love multi-touch such as is offered by Jitouch
@jaberg Yeah, but he's a geek.
I don't think he'd get a crappy router.
@jaberg You use QS?

Yes to QS.
There are geeks, and then there are hard core network geeks.

I would say that he would be a network geek

I haven't used Jitouch, but I like gestures and now use a Magic Trackpad a lot.

I don't know about a hard-core network geek.
@jaberg get it.

7:22 PM
Okay, I'll have to take your word for it.

It is $12, but I think it's totally worth it.
There is a trial

As I said, my best guess would be that the problems were solved by the latest patch, but it won't solve every wifi issue because they're not all the same problem.

Once I get my own laptop, the first piece of software I'm going to buy for it is Jitouch, the first device I'm going to get for it is a Magic Trackpad.
@jaberg Right.
In the case of my boss' problem, it was Lion

Regarding the software--I like my UI to be (mostly) out of the box. (QS being a major exception.) I need to run it as Apple built it to help my clients. And part of my "personal workflow" dictates that I can move over to a bare metal machine in less than 30 minutes.

@daviesgeek You're going to buy a magic trackpad for a system that has a trackpad?

7:25 PM
I have a tendency to fill up computers pretty fast with third party apps.
@JasonSalaz I use a dual monitor setup, and using the trackpad on a MBP with a secondary monitor is really pretty bad. I also edit video using FCP and it really doesn't work well.

(And just to poke a stick at you, I know of more than a few network geeks--I'm meeting them tonight for dinner in fact) that would posit that you can't get a "good" router for less than $500--which is what my first "personal" router cost. That being said, I happily run an Airport Extreme.)
I use the MT w/ my MacBook Pro because (at my desk) the Pro sits on a monitor arm--plus it doesn't have the "latest greatest" multitouch trackpad.

@jaberg Ha ha. I don't even remember what our router cost, but I don't think it was much more than $100

Not that we should really drill into this too far, but humor us, daviesgeek.
What router is in use?

You mean what router I use?
I have to go find out.

"Back in the day" I solved a bunch of wifi/disconnect issues in our house by switching from a Linksys router (beloved to all who hacked it) with an Airport Extreme. The chipset in the Linksys just didn't agree with the (then current) OS/Hardware in the Mac.
Agreed Jason--wasn't trying to have a political discussion. ;0
reBmike

7:31 PM
Ok, it is a Belkin N-150
And it cost $30.
So, not even anywhere near what you said @jaberg

Davies--whatever works man.

I don't really like it.

The meta point was that I can't promise the OS patch fixes ALL issues, but it should fix the majority. (Unless the majority of issues are caused by a bunch of individual problems)

In fact, I hate a lot of the problems it has.
@jaberg right
I really liked the router we had before, which was a standard AT&T router.
Whatever comes with DSL is what it was.

I like the standard AT&T router too. Very easy to break in to.

7:34 PM
Really?

Ah, not so easy on DSL. Unless the wifi is active.

Can you turn an AT&T DSL modem/router into a working router?

Let's just say that AT&T (generally) left a few back doors open by default.
Davie--probably not, and you'd be better served by a $50 Linksys.

@jaberg Can you recommend one?

@bmike Are you a security guy--or security interested.
Davie--my expertise is elsewhere. I'd opt for "whatever is on sale at Best Buy" that meets my needs and is either a Linksys or Netgear. There are open source firmware hacks available for most LinkSys that can improve them. Or, bite the bullet and get an Airport. It's easy and, for the most part, bulletproof.

7:37 PM
@jaberg I know that I can't convince my parents to get an AE.

So live with the Belkin until it blows up.

$180...ouch.
So, Belkin isn't really the best brand?

Wouldn't call them bad per say, but probably wouldn't choose it off the shelf for routers. My USB hub is a Belkin though.

I've generally had bad luck in very specific ways with routers before my Time Capsule.
I've had a router that would essentially die when you browsed a high connection site like Google MAps

One of the biggest problems that I have with the router is that I have to restart it now and then because it loses the internet connection.

7:40 PM
I've had a router which disliked letting me play multiplayer games on Xbox Live reasonably, a LOT.

I would also note that I didn't replace my Linksys with an Airport Extreme until I had specific network problems. (And even then, the cost of the AE was covered by two "original iPhone" rebates--the store credit we got for being early adopters)

I haven't had to do it in awhile, but I can't figure out if it's the cable modem or the router.

Davies--that's generally a cable modem issue.

I don't really recall what issues I may have had with a Linksys or Belkin I used when I lived in my parent's house. But that was literally 9 years ago, and I wasn't nearly as smart then as I was today.

@jaberg That's what I was thinking.
How do I go about fixing that?

7:41 PM
(this whole learning thing sure is interesting)

I called our ISP and they weren't very helful

Reset as necessary

@JasonSalaz It is, and it's very helpful

Replace the modem.

And interesting

7:42 PM
I don't have any magic. I
've found that Motorola Bitsurfer "consumer grade" cable modems generally last about 18 months here--and long for the early days when you "rented" a commercial grade cable modem from Cablevision or Comcast.

We have Charter, and they wanted to loan us a modem, but we bought the same one for a lot cheaper.

Or better yet, long for my (Boston) FIOS connection where the network interface is telco grade.
Yeah Davies, the whole cable modem market has gone mostly consumer grade. We have a tv/internet/phone package from Comcast now, and the modem seems to a step up (and so far reliable) but it's a long way from my first cable internet connection and it's heavy, metal, industrial grade "black box".
So basically, we all live with it.

Well, since I have no knowledge of the hardware of the networking world, this has been helpful.
I do have one more question.
Can I do a firmware hack on the router?

Just be warned, I have a workingman's knowledge of this stuff myself. I still defer to genuine network experts for the hard stuff.

Anything you know is probably better than what I know.

7:49 PM
You'll have to google for firmware hacks for your router. And if you brick it (as I did my first Linksys), don't tell your parents I told you to hack it.

You more than likely have more years of experience than I do.
@jaberg If there's a chance of bricking it, I probably won't do it.

I definitely have a few more years, the question is whether or not I've used them wisely.
If you hack hardware there's always a chance of bricking.

@jaberg You don't have your age listed, so I guessed by your picture.
@jaberg I figured that.

I thought it was up there. No secret, I'm 47.

If I hack it, I will have some one help me.
@jaberg Yes, most definitely older.
I'm only 16, so....
At least I'm not 9, like Nathan is. (reference to an old AD podcast episode)

7:51 PM
If you were in MA I'd suggest a visit to the MIT Flea Market. Pick up a handful of used wifi routers for cheap and go to town.

@jaberg That would be awesome.
I may have to see what's around here.

There might be a "geek flea" or a computer re-use center near you someplace. No need to hack anything that's online or "new"

Yeah, definitely.
I will definitely check it out.

Sometimes HAM radio flea markets have a lot of old computer stuff too. (MIT's flea is still technically a "HAMfest".)
And if your town has an electronics recycling day--go pick through the pile.

Well, thanks for your help @jaberg, I really appreciate it.
I have to go and get back to writing my paper.

7:54 PM
No worries man. That's what community is for.

And reading the Town Hall Digest
@jaberg Though this conversation has been completely off-topic for AD.
;-)

Come on, crowd source your paper. We'll help you. We're your friends. (Evil laugh)

Ok, 'cya 'round.
@jaberg haha

laters

Later

7:56 PM
I just know that entire conversation is going to be restructured to the point where I told him to brick the family router.
2

@jaberg ? What's up?
@daviesgeek everything is on topic in chat AFAIK

Just wanted to let you know that DC612 is meeting tonight--if you want to get your Security geek-on

the only thing is get a room if someone asks, but other than that - feel free to put whatever you want people to read later here ;-) :-) :-0

Correct me if I'm wrong but if I get a room with a… (Not going to produce more star fodder.)

@jaberg Oh sweet! bookmarked and a maybe for tonight. Thanks!

8:01 PM
No worries--ever. I just put the info out. And I will be there tonight unless this persistent cough finally kills me off.

8:43 PM
Hi guys
Who's active?
No-one. Oh well, I will fire at will regardless
First, has anyone else noticed a delay in new questions appearing in Meta? I've set a few recently, and noticed that after submitting they do not appear at the top of the list for a good minute or so. I just set one, and flipped from Meta to Main and back a dozen times, it had had 4 views before I even saw it in the list. Pretty sure it's not a caching issue locally
Second, my most recent question is not specific to AD Meta, but the whole of SE. Where should I post it? I'm happy to put it in Meta AD, and if a mod or someone wants to move it to Meta SO then good, but I don't feel comfortable going straight to MSO. Is this appropriate, to use the mods to moderate my Meta questions for applicability?

9:12 PM
I'd say you'd be fine with starting something on MAD, and flagging it to be moved to MSO if better applicable there.

9:26 PM
Not to be flip but I'd post it first in the community from which you're soliciting an answer. If you want the Backwards and Soft response, post in MAD.

Thats where I get confused. SO is for programmers. MSO should be about SO, but in reality it seems to be for the whole of SE.
must be a mess in there

It is
There is no MSE anymore. There used to be when SE sold the engine to other sites.
But when they officially EoL'ed "SE 1.0", MSE now redirects to MSO.

A: 2012 Moderator Election - Town Hall Chat Digest

Tim Stone kiamlaluno asked: Do you think that participating on Meta Stack Overflow helps with being a better moderator? What is your participation on Meta Stack Overflow? Wheat Williams answered: I have not participated in Meta Stack Overflow at all. I have not felt that it was important to being a p...

Poor programmers

heh

@stuffe MSO is the entire meta and the biggest meta all combined. SO dwarfs the rest of the site combined last time I checked... And not by a small margin, either. It is confusing to say - raise it on meta.

9:32 PM
SO dwarfs the network pretty much completely.
Flagships/staples usually do.

So everyone else has to shove their SE Meta questions onto MSO, and SO users get to have their MSO filled with meta questions from cookery, parenting, ask different....
what a mess

@stuffe the mods have tools to move things up or back down as needed if people ask the wrong question in the wrong place. Like any city, SO / MSO are messy by nature. We're like mayberry here - how quaint - you have like X questions a week. We get that most minutes of the day...

Given our site traffic, we're just not 'integrated' with the high traffic.
Which is exactly what bmike just said.
There are plenty of people who comb over SO and MSO to a ridiculous extent.
One man's full time job is another man's 25 minute task.

I figure asking in the localised Meta, and having a Mod move it may result in it not being a fart in the wind
Or perhaps just making it a slightly louder fart

@stuffe it won't matter - just ask where you think it should end.
link here if your "gas" passes too silently

9:38 PM
lol
wow

I just conceptually don't like just lumping the SE questions with the biggest SE Site Meta, it's a hack, a bodge.

It's like saying "You guys do loads, have some more, oh, by the way, it might not be relevant to you specifically, but you're the big boys, you'll cope"

it's not so bad for a few reasons:
1. SE is considered a programming-centric network.
Sucks, but it's true. Plenty of SF/SU questions about stuff maintaining an environment, (Xcode, Python, etc.) but not code itself.
Oh yeah, and deploying stuff too.
2. SO is the flagship site of SE, like I said before.
3. SO users, by extension MSO users, are pretty damn SE savvy. They know how to skim, filter, and tailor to their needs.
Speaking of, the tag subscriptions view on stackexchange.com is GREAT for multi-site monitoring.
(the 'tagged questions' link on stackexchange.com)

Because I am post SO, I don't like the idea that one SE site is more powerful than another. It's not equal. SO should follow the SE example, if we are to follow a strict and equal hierarchy in the same way as any site, but it's more like all sites are in thrall to SO and are inferior.

9:44 PM
Never going to happen.
This post is a pretty good read:
Posted by Jeff Atwood on January 31st, 2012

Way back in 2008, we had Alexis Ohanian and Steve Huffman, the founders and co-creators of Reddit, on the Stack Overflow podcast. We chatted about a bunch of stuff, but one of the things they said that always stuck with me was that Reddit always took an explicitly hands-off, no moderation approach to their content from the very beginning.

I found that a bit shocking, since I’ve… never seen that work. Certainly on Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange we are very much pro-moderation — and more so with every passing year. We have literally hundreds of community moderators. We spend  …

Seems a shame. It's democratic. It's how every site works in microcosm of the whole, but SO get's an exception

But it's all SO SPECIFIC to Stack Overflow.

Kyle linked it the other day, read it

huh, I never did realize that blog.se redirected to blog.so

Is it tho?

9:47 PM
Is what though?
so specific to Stack Overflow?

You would think that the top level above all sites would have a layer of collective responsibility to be able to query and set standards that all sites should follow regardless of their size.

When talking about a site specifically, yes. It is.

(is it specific to SO)
It's not tho, surely

The complaint that I have with that blog post is that they're laying the foundation for how sites should behave when it comes to matters of "fun".

Take my latest Meta question, simply querying the text on the favourite button when you hover.

9:48 PM
SO reached that point, critical mass and all that. They have to.

Why should I send that to SO?

I suspect we just had a large breakdown in communication.

If someone in cookery spotted it, they would;t send it to bicycles!

that's a silly comparison
ok, here:
The Stack Exchange, on a technical level, is as far as I'm aware completely identical across the entirety of the network.
So, technical issues that are not site specific like yours, belong in a location that applies generally to SE at large.
that location is currently MSO.
IMO
OMG BBQ LOL (etc.)

Sure
I get that
What I am saying is that SO is a lousy place

9:50 PM
to you :)

there should be a higher level SE only one

I agree.
But there isn't. So until there is...

Why should a programmer want to know about someones query from parenting?

I agree.
But until there is...

that's why I have a bit of a problem with putting a meta question on SO, and will start it on AD.
I like things need and tidy, everything in it's place
I don't want to hang out in a programmers area to ask questions about SE.
I dread to think what the cookery/parenting/outdoors mods think when they have to cross the threshold into SO chat ;)

10:26 PM
Stack Exchange's bottom line is expanding infinitely, but they're still clinging to the top percentile of users for dear life.
And really, for SO, they should.
Sure, the intention was to cater to other hobbies of their programmers, but in order to reach the traffic they need, they needed outside users to prop sites up too.

SO is a magnificent site for programmers, but i can't imagine that SO users and mods actually want to represent parenting/economics etc

Programmers have kids.
I'm not even talking about MSO at this point.
Just generally about the SE network at large.

@KyleCronin Tim puts the town hall digests together for us becaue he's an awesome SE user

The very real situation they have created and put themselves in, and the fact that they need to support it.

More specifically @Kyle, I used to do it and he took over for me when I was unable to

10:30 PM
Just like supporting SE 1.0 sites, like ZergOverflow, which was TURRIBLY popular. (Note: Heavy Sarcasm)

@KyleCronin For the history of the Town Hall Digests, see this MSO question

Q: How can we improve the Town Hall Digests?

The Unhandled ExceptionEDIT: Feedback welcomed for the first new style digest posted and the second new digest posted. TL;DR version: If you saw my Town Hall Digests, what can be done to improve them, given Michael Mrozek's format and Yi Jiang's GM script? Should these even exist, and if so, what format should they...

Hi @Josh - you taught him well

I don't know what it is, but I simply cannot read Yi Jiang's name just once.

@stuffe thanks!

Actually I know exactly what it is.

10:49 PM
care to share?

Jin Yang has all but one of the same letters.
I always think Yi Jiang is the programming alter-ego and Jin Yang is the designing alter-ego.
2
My brain has weird associations...

Nice

11:10 PM
@Josh kudos to him for doing that, I hope SE is paying him (and paid you) for his/your efforts.

@KyleCronin No pay, we just did it out of love for the community!
At this point Tim has done way more digests than I have
I kinda created a monster for him, LOL

yeah, it's a lot of work and little glory
if I were SE, I'd be embarrassed that I didn't pay you guys
they're certainly pretty flush with $$
in any case, I appreciate the work you guys put in, thanks

@KyleCronin LOL. I proposed the Town Hall Chat Digests myself after trying to take part on the original Server Fault Town Hall Chat and seeing how it was total chaos. So I kinda... invented the digests, I guess. Meaning it would be kinda weird to get paid for doing something I came up with ;-)
@KyleCronin You're welcome! (I like taking credit for Tim's work ;-)

I don't think there's anything weird about that
@Josh well, you did the digest for our 2011 election, so belated thanks at least!

11:17 PM
@bmike I know. I just thought that it was funny how off-topic our conversation was.

@KyleCronin Oh, that's right! I totally forgot about that. I did a bunch of them, they kinda blurred together :-)

@Josh You did the digest?

@daviesgeek The 2011 one. Tim Stone did this year's

ah.
Well, both look awesome...
Do you have to type it all out by hand?
Or do you have shortcuts?

@daviesgeek that I can take credit for, I had a major hand in developing the format :-)

11:20 PM
@Josh Thanks to you then.

@daviesgeek I used a script which Yi Jiang wrote for me, which helped but I still had to do it largely by hand
Tim Stone has some super script which helps him. But it's still somewhat manual

That must be a lot of work.....

This is why we ask strongly for stars and explicit replies. Not doing that makes our scripts not work

Oh...

@daviesgeek Sometimes it took me 2+ hours to do the longest ones

11:21 PM
I didn't participate in the town hall chat, so I don't know much about it.
I didn't have time

in Ask Different Town Hall Chat, yesterday, by Rebecca Chernoff
Candidates, please use the reply feature so that questions and their answers are linked together. (Hover your mouse over the left of the message, click the down arrow, click reply)
That's largely for Tim's benefit
because his script finds replies to starred questions (or something)

@Josh Yup, that'll make it much easier for the digest

Yeah I had to do a few early town halls where people didn't do that and it was so confusing!!!

I bet
Ah, you're an SO guy
(I was trying to figure out where you where from; I haven't seen you around here)
Actually, not only an SO guy, I should have said a trilogy guy, instead.

@daviesgeek I am. I started on SO. I'm really an MSO guy, but I love AskDifferent too!

11:27 PM
I saw that you are at 11K on MSO....
I don't go to MSO that often

I'm one of a select few with >1K rep on more than a few sites (6 sites, to be exact)

Yeah, I am not really active on any site but AD

@Josh Well, I do now anyway. This was the first Town Hall I tried it on...it seems to have worked fairly reasonably. Some mistakes, but had I gotten more than three hours of sleep I probably would have caught those in the review. :P

@TimStone YEY SUPER TOWN HALL SCRIPT! \o/
