@FlackBot who are you?

@FlackBot Who am I?

You are daviesgeek.

@FlackBot where are you?

Someday I will be able to intelligently reply to that command. This isn't that day.

4:15 AM
@FlackBot What is the current temperature in Turlock, ca

@Flack What time is it?

The current UTC time is Thu, 08 Sep 2011 17:20:58 GMT

@Flack Where do I live?

Someday I will be able to intelligently reply to that command. This isn't that day.

@Flack Where do you live?

Clueless seems to best describe how I feel after what you said.

5:21 PM
@Flack How old are you?

I should probably try a little harder next time to figure out what that means...

@Flack What is the best operating system?

Unfortunately, I don't seem to have any information on that topic.

@Flack what is your favorite browser?

My favorite browser is Internet Explorer. Especially IE6 - stable as a rock and fully standards compliant.

5:22 PM
@Flack Why?

I'm afraid I don't know how to answer that command yet.
try_to_understand(what_you_said) == FALSE

@Flack What is your favorite OS?

My favorite OS is Ubuntu, of course.

@Flack Who am I?

You are daviesgeek.

5:24 PM
@Flack Find recent tweets from me.

That's a nice command, but I really don't know what it is.

@Flack tell NathanGreenstein that hello

To be honest... I really don't have the capability of understanding that statement yet.
@NathanGreenstein: Hello

@Flack tell Abby that hello

@Abby: Hello

5:38 PM
@Flack tell VxJasonxV that Hello!!

@VxJasonxV: Hello!!

6:00 PM
@Flack who am I?

You are VxJasonxV.

@flack find Nathan

Clueless seems to best describe how I feel after what you said.

@flack tell VxJasonxV that you smell funny.

@VxJasonxV: I smell funny.

6:00 PM
wow, it actually did change the source.
It's still not in my global inbox though.

Hm...that's weird.

6:37 PM
@Flack find bmike

Someday I will be able to intelligently reply to that command. This isn't that day.

@flack Where is bmike?

That's a nice command, but I really don't know what it is.

jrg
@FlackBot find recent tweets from ubuntujames

If Lubuntu really wants to take some serious market share, then they need to get multi-monitor support down pat. It's pretty bad right now.

jrg
6:42 PM
Ok, so oneboxing looks exactly the same on a 20" display as it did on a 10" display. :P

:-)

jrg
Oohhh.... a Ask Different user. Hello @daviesgeek. :)

Yup.
I do use Ubuntu, though.
Ubuntu is pretty nice.

jrg
It's all personal preference. :)

Obviously I prefer OS X, but probably my second choice OS would be Ubuntu.
After Ubuntu would be all the other OSes, then Windows.
:-)

jrg
6:45 PM
(I just remarked about it because I've never seen a AD outside of your chatroom. :))
Windows is evil - unless you want to play Solitaire. Then it's amazing.

@jrg Can't agree more.

jrg
@daviesgeek Hehe. :)

@jrg I actually do hang out on other sites.
Mainly Christianity.SE, and SU.

jrg
@daviesgeek I try to do that as well - U&L, SU and occasionally security.se

I don't usually answer questions on SU. (Not exactly my strong point)
I don't have enough knowledge of Windows and Linux.
@jrg U&L?

jrg
Unix and Linux. unix.se
waves at @MarcoCeppi

Hello

Oh, yeah, forgot about that. I have done a little on there.

jrg
I'm mainly on AskUbuntu - I don't have a windows install I can use for troubleshooting anymore.

So, I'm guesssing you're on Ubuntu now?

jrg
6:49 PM
Yup.

Have you used OS X at all?

jrg
Used to use OS X back in the 10.3 days - haven't used it in awhile.

Lion is looking pretty awesome.
And I remember those days of 10.3!

jrg
I don't know, had a guy at the linux user group who was using Lion - it didn't like the projector. Although XP liked it.
And Apple borrowed Ubuntu's login screen. ;)

No!
Seriously?

jrg
6:52 PM
Yes, seriously (to both)

Did not know that.
@Flack Did OS X copy Ubuntu's login screen?

I'm not that smart - I haven't learned that command quite yet.

That's a bold statement. You mean GDM came before the Mac OS login screen?

jrg
Huh, Mac OS X Lion’s login screen looks familiar. http://9to5mac.com/66858/ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ExitStrategy#Login%20screen
Oops, the 9-5 mac link is dead....

When did OS X come out with the new login screen?
Oh,
When did OS X come out with the new login screen?
Oops....

jrg
6:57 PM
Copy/paste issues? :P

Nope, timeout issues.

jrg
To answer your question, Lion.

Yeah, I noticed that.

2007-11-27 13:52:54 was when the screenshot was added in the wiki

Cool!

jrg
6:57 PM
Ah. Timeout: The enemy of us all. :)

but that's not the same login screen that's implemented in 11.04

@jrg :-)
Hmm...haven't seen 11.04
@jrg Hey, we're the same age!
@flack What temperature is it?

Clueless seems to best describe how I feel after what you said.

@Flack what is the temperature?

The average temperatures of Canada vary across the country; the table below shows the temperature of various cities across Canada. The table can be reordered by clicking on the box in each column. {| class="wikitable sortable" style="text-align:center" |- ! style="background: #CCCCCC;" |City ! style="background: #99CCCC;" |January(Avg. Low °C) ! style="background: #99CCCC;" |January(Avg. High °C) ! style="background: #D99898;" |July(Avg. Low °C) ! style="background: #D99898;" |July(Avg. High °C) |- | style="text-align:left; background: #F2F2F2;" |Winnipeg, MB | style="background: #E6F2F2;"...

7:08 PM
@Flack what is the temperature in the Central Valley?

The temperature in the Central Valley is currently undefined degrees C.

@Flack what is the temperature in modesto ca

The temperature in modesto ca is currently 25 degrees C.

@Flack What is the temperature in Turlock Ca in Fahrenheit?

The temperature in Turlock Ca in Fahrenheit is currently undefined degrees C.

jrg
7:10 PM
@MarcoCeppi It's what should be default in 12.04, maybe 12.10.
@daviesgeek oh really? Cool!

@jrg Then OSX beat us to it :P

jrg
Noo! MPT must save us!

MPT?

jrg
Invent a time machine, go back in time and then beat OS X to our own design.

:-)

jrg
7:12 PM
MPT - Matthew Paul Thomas, one of the big Ubuntu peoples. :)

Ah...

jrg
@daviesgeek: Nice question here - apple.stackexchange.com/questions/19121/…

Thanks.

jrg
Applescript? People still use that? :P

I use it "all" the time.

jrg
7:20 PM
Cool! Ubuntu doesn't have anything that nice.
Unfortunately. :(

Applescript is like Bash for Ubuntu

It's pretty powerful, for pseudo code.
@MarcoCeppi not quite.
OS X has bash.

jrg
Except Applescript is more like pseudo code than bash is.

Right.

Could just use python :) <3

jrg
7:21 PM
Go Ruby? ;)

Applescript doesn't have as steep as learning curve.
It uses plain english
E.g.
Tell application "Finder" to quit
-- Quits the Finder

killall -9 nautilus
-- Nautilus killed with fire

:-)
What's the -9 flag? (I forgot)

It's the SIGKILL

As opposed to just

jrg
7:23 PM
See, it's all about preferences. If you're going to try and do anything fancy, bash is the way to go, if you're trying to do plain and simple stuff, applescript works just fine. :)

killall nautilus
Sorry, I use an alias for killall

Well you can killall nautilus, that will kill -15 which is the nice quit

jrg
And the nice quit doesn't always work.

Ah, must remember to use the -9 flag

It's the difference between "Hey, you need to stop what you're doing. Clean up and close" and a headshot with no text.

jrg
7:24 PM
BOOM.

Right!
:-)

7:37 PM
@jrg Have you been going through my questions?

jrg
@daviesgeek :)
Yes, I was.
You asked some good ones.

Thanks

jrg
You're welcome.

I was wondering what happened...my rep points just jumped

jrg
Well, you deserve it. Also made me realize that I should be on apple.se more often.

7:45 PM
Yes you should!
We've got a lot of good questions.
That spark good discussion.

jrg
Well, not so sure about the discussion part - I tend to be pretty polarizing when it comes to discussions on SE. :)

Well, discussion in chat...

jrg
Ah ok.

And a little discussion on questions
Just curious...Are you not in school?

jrg
I'm homeschooled. So, yes.
You?

7:58 PM
Homeschooled!!!!!
Go homeschooling!!!!

jrg
Haha sweet! high fives

yeah!
Just guessing...do you have a big fam?

jrg
Family of 6 yeah. You?

we are 10 total

jrg
By modern standards I'm in a big family. By homeschooling standards, we're tiny. :D

8:12 PM
Yeah!!

jrg
Hehe.
I've honestly never met another homeschooler on SE. :P
35
Homeschooling

Proposed Q&A site for homeschoolers of all kinds and those who have questions or want to know more.

Currently in definition.

8:32 PM
So, another guess, are you a Christian?

jrg
Another correct guess. You seem to know a lot about me from my SE profile. ;)

Sorry to butt in, but does anyone know how to change room topic?

jrg
Yeah @AlexAngas.
Room info (top right), then you'll see edit buttons next to the room topic and room name.

Oh OK that makes sense. I was trying /topic but of course this isn't IRC :)
Thanks @jrg

jrg
No problem @AlexAngas.

8:50 PM
I didn't guess that from your SE profile.

jrg
Oh? :P

I made an educated guess: big homeschooling family...
I seem to remember that our church has a sister church in Ohio. What church do you go to?
Whoa, just looked at AD chat: Missed 56 chats!

9:32 PM
@jrg You still there?

jrg
@daviesgeek Yeah, sorry. Got sidetracked into a project for a client.

What do you do?

jrg
I go to church at a mission work - we're not officially a church yet.
I was working on a HTML bug that I suddenly had an idea as to how to fix it.

Ah...
You code?

jrg
Yup.

9:35 PM
HTML? PHP?
Javascript?

jrg
Ruby.

Websites?

jrg
(I don't count HTML/CSS - that's markup)
Yup.

How do you use Ruby for a site?

jrg
Use a web framework. I use Rails.

9:37 PM
Cool!
I don't know much about that type of web programming.

jrg
Web programming is an interesting beast. Some prefer PHP, others prefer django.

I "work" for a web programmer
Actually I intern.

jrg
oh really?

And I code in PHP.
Ack! Hate timeouts!
It didn't like my comment on timeouts; it gave me a timeout!!

jrg
lol.

9:40 PM
Anyhow, I am in the process of learning PHP. I'm not at all proficient in PHP, but I'm getting there.
Do you have an example of your coding?

jrg
yeah, hangon a minute and i'll link you.

Ok.

jrg
growing-waterfall-126.heroku.com - nowhere near being finished.

Very cool!
Did you do that all yourself?

jrg
Yup.

9:49 PM
Ah...so lucky!
I haven't got quite to that point yet.
I probably could struggle through it and do something like that
but not too easily...

jrg
It's not that hard with rails.
PHP, unless you're using a framework, it probably is harder.

Yeah.

jrg
I'll let you in on a secret that sounds dumb:
The best way to learn programming (period) is to go out with an idea, and not to stop until it's finished.

yup
Yeah, that sounds like a good secret

jrg
10:08 PM
If I've learned anything, it's not from tutorials, it's from what I do on my own breaking existing programs.
(and writing my own)

Well, I am trying to get my site working again so I can show it to you....

jrg
Which one? your blog?

Nope
At one point, the "Comments" link worked.

jrg
Not bad!

It had something similar to your site.
Without the editing feature.
....And the Youtube bar is broken.

jrg
10:10 PM
shrug it's good enough to give me an idea of what you're aiming for.

I coded it last summer.
Everything except the Javascript to make the pages fade in/out

jrg
Ever thought about CoffeeScript?

No...what is it?

jrg
It's a way to write something that's higher level than JS, then get it compiled into JS.

Hmm..
Never heard of it...
goes and Googles it

jrg
10:13 PM
It's big in the Ruby community. I haven't really dug into it, I'm trying to learn normal JS before I dip into coffeescript.

Have you ever used jQuery?

jrg
I've used jQ a few times.
I'm far from being proficient in it though.

That's what the webmaster I intern with uses.
Does that even make sense?

jrg
makes sense. :)

Good
I'd show you some of the sites I've been working on this summer, but the web programmer doesn't want me telling people about them...
They are special SEO-optimized sites
And the goal is to get our sites on page one
So, we don't want people knowing about them and messing with them, which will cause our results to be skewed.

jrg
10:22 PM
Hehe. Problems with working for a real company: You can't say anything.

Well, technically we are a real company, but we are more a circle of friends.
When the project takes off, and we start seeing a lot of results, I'll let you know.

jrg
Sure thing. :)

Who do you work for?

jrg
That's a good question.
Me mostly.
When i'm low on cash (like right now), I head over to the local startup incubator and do some work for a day or two.

I wish I was being paid.

jrg
10:25 PM
I don't get payed much. $50, $20 there.

In a year, year and a half, we will hopefully see some money.
Not that we don't right now.

jrg
I wish you luck. :)

We make about $5 a day.
But since I'm not an employee yet, I don't get paid.

jrg
Get hired ASAP. Seriously.

Yeah...

jrg
10:27 PM
Or a contract of some sort.

If the project takes off, I have a guaranteed job.

jrg
something that says "Hey, I'm a employee of the company too!"

Yeah...
Well, we don't want too much attention.
And a contract won't do much good for me, since I work on a week-to-week basis
If I have time, I work, if I don't, I don't

jrg
Yeah, true.

I have about 10 minutes.

jrg
10:30 PM
Heading out?

Yup, chiropractor appointment
Question about Ruby: How hard is it to learn?

jrg
cringes have fun with that.
Ruby isn't that hard.

Well, since I sit at a computer almost all day, I need it!

jrg
You just have to get your head around the fact it isn't PHP.
(or Perl, or... whatever)

How much PHP do you know?

jrg
10:33 PM
I followed a few "Hello world" tutorials. Then got introduced to Ruby/Rails by a friend, and haven't looked back.
(so almost none)

Cool!
The other thing I am looking at as a potential job is video-editing.

jrg
OOOOOHHHHH... video editing. You might be interested in this project I'm doing then.... I'll see if I can get the client to give me permission to show you.
Do you have AIM/Google Talk?

Yup.
@jrg Ok..
Sounds fun!

jrg
@daviesgeek Add me and then I can show you later (not now, since you've gotta leave) - I'm jrgiffordjames1 on AIM, jrgifford.james @ gmail.com for gtalk.

GTG. TTYL

jrg
10:37 PM
K cya

I'll leave this up.
I'm daviesgeek[at]gmail[dot]com
Full name?
Mine's Matthew Davies

jrg
James Gifford.

So nice to meet you!
CYA round

jrg
Nice to meet you too! cya!
