A: Should spam posts be edited?

Simon SheehanThis was recently brought up at the Super User Meta also. Why shouldn't we edit spam posts?: Usually spam is easy to spot, and gets removed very fast. 6 spam flags deletes the post. Q: Please don't edit obvious spam posts just to make it suitable to the site

A JSpam posts usually occur on SE sites and main site is not an exception. Such posts should be flagged as spam and they do get flagged. However, what I have been noticing is that sometimes, they get edited and stick for long times on the site. This has happened in the early days of public beta, an...

@terdon I think the opposite question should be asked first; does this post really add any value to the site? Not it will slowly be deleted as it has accrued a whole lot of downvotes

A J
11:46 AM
@terdon It was obvious spam. If it was a genuine question, then why the OP bothered with adding a link in the first place?

@tripleee Yes, it does. Or it can. Duplicates are useful since they act as signposts helping users find the right answer.
@AJ Oh, I don't argue that it wasn't spam. However, once the link had been removed, it could have been a useful duplicate.
I am just asking if there is any benefit in deleting the post if it is no longer spam.

NVZ
12:01 PM
Some spammers intentionally write useful duplicates. O_o

@terdon I know why we keep duplicates, but if it's essentially a duplicate of an existing signpost (or a very unlikely way to phrase the problem) and it's going to be deleted in a few weeks anyway, the end result will be the same and it's somewhat unlikely as a signpost in the meantime anyway
but this is really potayto potahto

@terdon One problem (if it really would be useful and get upvotes) are some of the things highlighted here: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/307629/…

@tripleee Well, it wasn't an unlikely way at all, that's why I asked. But you still haven't answered the question: is there any benefit to deleting it? It's an honest question, there may very well be some benefit, I just can't see it.
Also, why would it have been deleted? Dupes aren't deleted as far as I know.

12:04 PM
@terdon they're usually frequently plagiarized

@WELZ ?
How is that relevant? This one wasn't.

@terdon downvoted answers questions with no upvoted answers get roomba'd, no? Or is that just on SO?

@tripleee Dupes are an exception as I recall. Let me check.
@PeterJ That's about voting.

@paper1111 Yes?

@paper1111 good find

@terdon i.e. was plagiarized

Ah

@terdon Yes but my point is the same answers apply - if that was a really useful dupe (which IMO it wasn't) and got upvotes then you'd have a spammer with positive reputation

Meh, that wasn't much of a problem. I mean, it isn't stealing someone else's work.

A J
@terdon Dupes are not deleted. However, the spammers got a backlink, didn't they? In the revision history, which is accessible to all.

12:07 PM
@terdon no but that invalidates the argument that it could have been a useful signpost

A J
@paper1111 good work

But, I don't understand why nobody is addressing the only thing I actually asked about. I don't really care about that specific question, I am asking you spam experts whether there is any benefit in deleting a question that can be useful now that the spam has been removed.
@tripleee Why?

@terdon TBH it's really not removed, still present in the history

@terdon the answer is this:

@terdon because the post it was copied from is the useful one and this one adds nothing at all now

@terdon in that case you would not have that problem, but you (mod) have to be faster than the flaggers :P

True. Which is hard these days! (and that's absolutely great)

A backlink for a given web resource is a link from some other website (the referrer) to that web resource (the referent). A web resource may be (for example) a website, web page, or web directory. A backlink is a reference comparable to a citation. The quantity, quality, and relevance of backlinks for a web page are among the factors that search engines like Google evaluate in order to estimate how important the page is. PageRank calculates the score for each web page based on how all the web pages are connected among themselves, and is one of the variables that Google Search uses to determine...

OK, fair enough. Thanks for the clarification everyone.

@JohnDvorak the actual value to the actual instigator of the spam is probably near zero (because noindex nofollow etc) but in the spam economy, they might end up paying the middleman because they can present proof that the link is live

Glad I could help :-D

@AJ are you a spammer o.O

@terdon @AJ The Roomba does delete duplicate questions, if they meet the requirements for ether the 30-day or 365-day Roomba. Closed-as-duplicate only prevents the question from being deleted by the Roomba which deletes questions > 9 days after closure.

@Makyen Are you sure? The meta posts I'm looking at don't make that clear.
I really, really hope that's not the case. And it doesn't make much sense, anyway. The whole point of dupes is to keep them around as signposts.

@quartata Always. But it's the fact that things are broken in a way that makes everything actually work that is key. It only breaks in a way that breaks other things rarely :p

"perfectly good sign post" is a rare sight, at least on SO

@terdon I'm certain. The criteria on the 365-day Roomba that the question won't be deleted if it "has view count <= the age of the question in days times 1.5" is, in part, intended to keep questions which are reasonably effective signposts.

Yeah, the view count makes that less destructive, true.
@JohnDvorak Oh, it's a perfectly common site out in the wide network.
