12:14 AM
Reminds me of the time we were told to pull a blade server by rack/OU position.
Once we got it out, we found the serial number was not the same as the one that was listed on the job.
Quickly shoved it back in and turned it back on, the gtfo.

Bob
@MichaelFrank That's a pretty poor choice of photo :P

Probably the first search result for "pressing power button"

Bob
Button in the photo is a momentary pushbutton of the type found in modern machines ... the type with ACPI ... the type that forces a hard power off if you hold it for a few seconds.
@MichaelFrank No indicator light? :P
I like the Dell servers with a little illuminated LCD display on the front.

No light, we did think it was odd that it was still on, but I deferred to the more experienced engineer who said "Well, they want it out!" yank
I figured out what the little (i) button on the front of my server did the other day.
It turns a light on at the back, so you can ID the server once you walk around the other side of the rack.

Bob
I'm kind of glad I don't have to deal with physical servers anymore

12:22 AM
@Bob the new ones do NFC and have an app it seems.
@MichaelFrank blades are 'fun'
also that story smells like bullshit
long press on a powerbutton should insta-off no?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek 1999

Old hardware was a toggle switch.

Hooked directly up to the power supply, in some cases

This is 1999, where old switches behaved different, men were real men, women were real women and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri.

pretty sure hard powerbuttons died before then

Bob
12:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek A server in 1999. Could've easily been manufactured ~1990

ah true

ah, cool ;p

Bob
problem now is ... getting a printer (and the possible 10 hours of setup time... :S)

(also, yay, I can bug you to model stuff if I get a 3d printer ;p )

Bob
also the features on it might be too small to print :\

@CanadianLuke "It is now safe to remove the power cable from your computer."

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol. it was actually kinda fun
been far too many years since I last did CAD
but a lot of it's just measuring the thing
hm. CR10s runs almost $400 (ow)

Bob
12:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek help picking a printer? :P

@Bob Its kinda on the pre 3 month rule thing ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, you'd know far more than me, soooo... any tips would be useful :P

this would be what I'd buy tho

Bob
> $203.09 + $60.02 Shipping & Import Fees Deposit to Australia
hmmmmmmmmmmmm
sounds pretty good
> (120 x 120 x 120 mm)
also, I just realised I don't really have an SD card reader for the desktop

ya. Its very cost competitive with the DX one I was looking at

Bob

> Basic Skills Required:

A little better than basic understanding of electronics
A little better than basic understanding of mechanical components
A little better than basic computer skills
I can do that! ...maybe

(its the gantry style so less stuff to break - I think its minimal assembly. Print bed is small but eh)

Q: Support for OpenID ends on July 1, 2018

Joe FriendStack Overflow was an early and strong supporter of OpenID. We built our sign up/log in flow around it. We were idealistic and had high hopes, but these hopes weren't realized. Over the years people have wondered if OpenID is dead. We've had to remove support as OpenID providers pulled support or...

@Bob ^

Bob
:\
@JourneymanGeek so I'm waffling between the Anet A8, the Monoprice mini, and its slightly bigger cousin :P

apparently no more SE openid (which kinda was not expected but eh) and they'll switch to username/password logins (which should be seamless)

@JourneymanGeek Wait... I can't click my Google button anymore? :(

google and facebook logins will work
just over oauth

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...that'll probably break cavil login

1:32 AM
@Bob in that case @allquixotic ^ ;p
@Bob I didn't quite realise that
tho
@JF SE OpenID accounts are really email/pw accounts handled through complicated OpenID code path. They will be migrated to a more simple email/pw only code path as a part of this change. No extra work required on your part. — Joe Friend ♦ 8 hours ago

A: Support for OpenID ends on July 1, 2018

Tim PostJust a quick addendum to Joe's post, we'll have a pretty strong support plan in place for those that become disenfranchised from their accounts due to not seeing the message. While we're being really proactive about getting the word out, there's always going to be a few stragglers. When we pulle...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek it'll be simple for humans
not so much for automated logins that make certain assumptions

ah
well, there's 3 months to fix it? ;p

Bob
e.g. cavil webdriver login currently triggers an openid-specific JS function

.... ow

Bob
@JourneymanGeek no. there's a period of brokenness followed by a maybe fix
unless they plan to release a test site with the new login flow, there's nothing I can do right now

1:36 AM
er k?
@Bob ah
dang
I'd been under the impression SE openid was staying until...
erm
this morning?

1 hour later…
Bob
@JourneymanGeek O_O
Exactly. Even if the connection is really bad and the file somehow got damaged, it should work fine. PRO-TIP: Encrypt it, rename it to 'KimKardashianNude.mp4' and let thousands of people help you with the connection. Automatic, distributed backup for free! :) — Eric Duminil 19 hours ago

Bob
3:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek this is almost hilariously cheap rcgroups.com/forums/…

3:52 AM
@Bob some assembly required ;p
also no heated bed

Bob
@JourneymanGeek think I'm going tevo tarantula

@Bob I got a friend that works in 3D printing for Fuji Xerox... maybe he can cut you a deal on one of their entry level models...
They're only like $5k to start with!
Also, if you're doing this just to fix an umbrella, it must be a very special umbrella!

...and Grandmother has either died or is about to die. My mom is grieving :(
Feb 20 at 17:11, by bwDraco
So... on day 5 of Chinese New Year, my paternal grandfather died 😢
Well, with this loss... I have no grandparents left.
The impact is especially hard on us because this means we've lost two relatives in less than 15 days... *sigh*
I don't think she'll grieve for a very long time given that Grandmother is a whole world apart, but it will be another few busy weeks for us as we prepare for a trip to Hong Kong.

On max settings, FFXV is by far the most graphically intensive game I've ever played.
in The Bridge, Jul 21 '13 at 2:51, by DragonLord
I have a feeling that FF15 will end up being the performance behemoth Crysis was almost six years ago...
@JourneymanGeek Can you pin this?
(have Yahoo-based OpenID login on my account but that's no longer used; I just log in directly through Stack Exchange)

@bwDraco not entirely sure that's very useful?
I was debating vaguely mirroring it on meta, but I'm pretty certain most folks here arn't on openid

> ...but can it run Crysis Final Fantasy XV?
To finally see the PC version come to fruition, and to have the hardware to run the game at its best... is a dream come true.
I knew a PC version was inevitable, but I never thought I would have a PC anywhere near as powerful as Astaroth.

6:04 AM
is it just me or did mute tab turn into mute site?
in chrome

@JourneymanGeek Qoo10 refunded my sister already.
Pretty fast turn around!

Bob
yo, you hirin'? — Bryan Boettcher yesterday
@JourneymanGeek ok, if I get one it'll probably be the tarantula :P
same-ish clone as the not-mini monoprice, half the price
...then again the latter comes pre-assembled
gah, back to trying to choose again :P

6:21 AM
@Bob the 'nice' thing with the monoprice is - well, its preassembled. If nothing else, its less likely to be the printer
and the heated bed is a "very nice thing to have" since it prevents prints from warping

Bob
@JourneymanGeek tarantula does heated bed too

Bob
@JourneymanGeek reason for monoprice is I don't think I really want to spend 8+ hours fiddling :P

6:58 AM
@Bob looks like the ruby and python SE chatbot frameworks have the same issue ;p

Bob
7:25 AM
yea, uh... no thanks

lol. express saver takes longer and costs more :)

0_0
@Bob the trantula?
I think DX does the same strange stuff now
they have a 10 dollar heat gun... with 20 dollar shipping

7:47 AM
Good morning
Such bullshit

@rahuldottech The URL title makes no sense...
Disney India Hotstar Netflix deal over Marvel Pixar Lucasfilm.

Bob
8:14 AM
@JourneymanGeek no, that one is free dhl.
the crazy shipping is monoprice

oh
don't ever buy directly off monoprice unless you're in the US
amazon's a lot cheaper

Bob
@JourneymanGeek still $100 shipping

user226528
I once saw such a thing: I went to a shopping web site where I could choose between vendor A and vendor B (I don't remember their names). Vendor A more expensive but it was the only expense. Vendor B took you through additional delivery costs, tax, insurance, etc.

Bob
I'm looking for a Wanhao i3 (what monoprice rebadges) now
might go back to the tarantula

8:16 AM
ah

Bob
don't really want to get a kit but... it's a lot cheaper

ah
and you probably can find all the info you need on the internet

how weird, go daddy was redirecting me to the Armenian home page

9:48 AM
got haxked?
or your proxy screwed again ?
Man
this 'was' the same price as the Wanhao i3
I'm presuming it's terrible
because for £170, I can almost justify buying one

its a knockoff of a really good 3d printer

Ah I see

that said, this particular design is designed to be knocked off so to speak

Right.
?me is no expert in 3d printers, but I basically hear you can upgrade parts, to better parts, as you go along?

the idea is you can buy or print everything but the circuit board easily, and that's also open sourceish
in theory? yeah

9:53 AM
Yeah.... theory ;D

Bob
...whoops
I broke my model
...I need git for cad

cough
;p
in theory, there's nothing stopping you from storing your working models in git

Bob
@djsmiley2k with the reprap-based ones, yea

or ... what about hitting undo?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek the undo function is broken until 0.17
0.17's been in beta for 6000-odd commits, since mid-2016
more specifically, hitting undo is what got me into this mess :D

9:54 AM
Git for CAd is cool.
idea wise

well, version control for CAD, I guess I should say.

Bob
(it deleted a bunch of constraints and now I'm trying to figure out a sketch that has 58 degrees of freedom where it should have 0)

Doesn't need to be git specifically.
As long as it's not got 6 degrees of kevin bacon you're safe.

Bob
@djsmiley2k if you're suggessing visual source safe I'm gonna need to find a way to slap you through your monitor :D

10:05 AM
@Bob Not suggesting anything, I have no experience of such things, I just like the idea of it
Source control all the things!
well damn
the city's hospital is on fire.

10:42 AM
welp
ugh
why are american call centre staff so happy?

;D
becuase it immediately stops you being so angry

all our domains are locked for transfer

who they with tho
I heard GoDaddy mentioned, if so, hahahahaha have fun

:'(

Oh dear

10:47 AM
they don't have email support

i have better shit to do than hold the line!!!!!

lockin domains for transfer is normal tho.

hold music you have won this time!

11:10 AM
@Burgi clearly they're happy their jobs haven't been outsourced to elbonia.
...

lol

wait. why the hell would a domain host only have phone support?
@Burgi also, I usually just toss it on speaker.
sometimes I also complain their hold music is terrible

@JourneymanGeek thats what i want to know

What's the meaning of the "X-Px" field that wget sometimes produces when using the "--server-response" parameter?
example:
``HTTP request sent, awaiting response...
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Wed, 7 Mar 2018 10:15:20 GMT
Server: PWS/8.3.1.0.8
X-Px: ht [url]
Cache-Control: max-age=604800
Expires: Wed, 14 Mar 2018 09:05:40 GMT
Age: 4180
Content-Length: 2564
Content-Type: application/octet-stream
Last-Modified: Thu, 21 Jan 2010 09:46:52 GMT
Connection: keep-alive``
I replaced the URL with "[url]"

@Burgi also, eww godaddy.
that said apparently people seem to hate namecheap too :(

11:16 AM
I think its the hostname, actually.

11:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek What, why?

@MichaelFrank no one seems to want to tell me ;p

Well, I'll tell you that I don't hate Namecheap!

I'm using them for a few domains, and one email account on an old domain for dad (its cheap, and someone else's problem ;p)

i find the dashboard interface on namecheap absolutely terrible and confusing

I only really look at it when I renew ;p

11:42 AM
hmmmmm
who knows what a CCSA is

@djsmiley2k Check Point Certified Security Administrator

it's the training I'm going on

it wasn't pleasent

yeah it's nto great

i need to cool it some how :/

"We wanted to see whether social bonding between animals and humans was influenced by the type and content of the communication."

user226528
Hi, guys!

user226528
Sorry, I don't how dread pirates say hello.

Yeah but what's to say that's not just because it's what dogs in western cultures have been brought up to expect and be accustomed to? If I started talking to humans in an alien dialect and a socially inappropriate tone they wouldn't pay much attention either

user226528
Anyway... Has Windows 10 cumulative update for March shown up on anyone's machine yet?

user226528
1:42 PM
It is supposed to be released by now.

I've only just been forcefully terrorised by the fall creators update

user226528
Oh, that's bad, because Destroyers Update is right around the corner.

user226528
But I didn't mean that.

user226528
I meant "2018-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4090913)"

Bob
@FMLCat Heh, that actually fixed hibernation for me.
Funny thing about the rolling releases. You're effectively doing a reinstall every half year, so some of the weirder issues get fixed by it :)

user226528
1:48 PM
@Bob Windows 10 is not on a rolling release.

user226528
Rolling release requires there be no cumulative updates.

user226528
e.g. instead of getting a bagful of changes twice a year, the browser team updates as soon as possible without regards to the calendar team, kernel team or customer harassment/satisfaction team

user226528
Although input from espionage/telemetry department is usually vital.

2:10 PM
@DavidPostill @Burgi remember that question about liquid metal cooling from a week ago? Apparently that's a thing.

ugh

Why is my system installing a vulkan package?

user226528
@ThatREDACTEDGuy Short answer: Video card

user226528
If you've installed video card driver, a video accelerator, a video codec with hardware acceleration enabled or a GPGPU component, they may install a Vulkan package.

Why is my system installing a package for a programming language created more than 60 years ago?

2:17 PM
legacy dependancy

@FleetCommand I just ran dnf update and it is installing vulkan as a dependendy of... something?

i'm having all sorts of issues installing foundation for emails
FINALLY!!!
maybe

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Recently, I flagged an answer in SU because it started with "To FleetCommand" and seemed like a reply. You just removed "To FleetCommand" from it. Now, it looks like an answer that starts with unnecessary criticism of ... something, but no one has a clue as to what.

it basically suggests one approach has issues and suggests an alternative
looks fine to me!

user226528
I think the solution is to remove the criticism altogether and write "Get-Content might be the straightfoward way but I suggest this..."

2:33 PM
but I think the critique is an essential part of the intent of the poster.

user226528
Yes. And what I suggesting is to make "Get-Content" the object of criticism.

user226528
No pressure of course.

Bob

user226528
God knows what would have happened by July 2019.

user226528
Where does this come from?

Bob
2:36 PM
@FleetCommand ?

user226528
The photo. Did you find it somewhere on the web, or did you take it? If the latter, do you find the batteries in your tool shed?

Bob
@FleetCommand I took it.
Had a box of 10 of those 4-packs

they could have been stored in direct sunlight or a hot australian shed

user226528
Is this the only victim?

Bob
2:38 PM
@Burgi in a drawer
@FleetCommand one other pack has one that's leaking slightly

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Yeah. That's indeed legendary.

probably got attacked by drop bears.

Bob
I only checked cause 2/4 of them leaked all over my fancy MBT-1 battery tester

they could be counterfeit

user226528
I once bought a cheap pair of Chinese headsets for someone to do some tinkering. He was so happy until he discovered the headset was called SQNY, not SONY.

2:40 PM
@FMLCat indeed.... cats figured out meowing gets human attention, why would dogs not learn to speak/hear the same?

Bob
@Burgi bought em from dick smith... was a preeeeeetty big local retailer

faulty batch stored in a hot australian's drawers

user226528
O.o

user226528
A large retailer called "**** smith"? Really?

2:41 PM
@FleetCommand at least it wasn't SPQR
@FleetCommand that really was the name of the founder

@FleetCommand dick is short for richard

user226528
@Burgi Oh, I know! Believe me. I've read Anne Shirley and played Mafia.

do you also self censor dick van dyke?

user226528
The most frightening thing in your message is "self censor" without the intervening "-".

i'm a rebel

user226528
2:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek Huh? The Roman Republic?

user226528
Not sure I get the joke. Or the point.

a battery bought then would be totally dead by now

they would be really old headphones.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Wanhao i3 Duplicator is $360 shipped from China (US retailer dropshipping?)
Which is effectively the Monoprice Maker Select v2

2:49 PM
ooh

Bob
(Monoprice rebadging it)

user226528
Er... @Burgi, I'm not sure if you got the joke. Let me put it this way: Smith Hammer is the name of a person, but smith hammer is an object.

Bob
uh, that is, 360 USD
Compare the Mini on Amazon is $270, and the Select is $400

user226528
Now, Dick Smith is certainly the name of person, as is Dick Chenney.

Bob
The larger one is 2x the bed size in all dimensions

2:50 PM
@Bob The monoprice being the one Hack-A-Day were going crazy about?

Bob
@djsmiley2k uhhhhhhh
idk :P

probably saw it there

yeah

Bob
also, they do support over facebook messenger
which is ... interesting
on one hand, I don't really like using facebook across more sites

2:52 PM
Ah, it was the mini they were loving.

Bob
on the other, it's actually a great support experience
much better than those shitty support chat sites that don't really work

Bob
hmmmmmmmmm
one of my 18650s, a Samsung 26F, has dropped to 2.1V
that's ... bad
maybe I should toss it

not seen that anywhere
this is the previous, non delta model
problem with monoprice is their shipping outside the US is insanely expensive

@djsmiley2k that's the delta, which isn't on amazon

that's the monoprice mini select's original version ;p
