wow! I never understood people with ADHD can't read long articles
I thought it's just the problem of interest of energy.
I thought it's just the problem of interest or energy. I can't easily concentrate when reading an article which is not my interest, so it's not easy for me to finish it if it's too long.
but if the article interests me greatly, I could usually finish reading it even it's long unless I am sleepy or hungry.

Q: Can this question be salvaged by editing it?

VylixCommunication while setting up an informational interview via email At a glance, this question seems to be asking about "how to phrase my email", which is off-topic here. However, I believe we can edit this to fit the scope of IPS by changing the question to "what are the guidelines to write thi...

Q: Is "how to write" off-topic on IPS?

VylixFirst, you may want to re-read this meta about phrasing request. We have agreed that phrasing request is off-topic. However, I believe that questions that asking "how to write" can be made on-topic by specifically making them asking about the guidelines of writing. These are the recent question...

Q: Make [off-topic] on-topic

VylixHere in Meta IPS, we have off-topic and scope off-topic has only 10 questions, while scope has 40 questions. Thus, it makes sense to merge off-topic to scope. What do you say?

@ExtrovertedMainMan Is paying for a birthday party an Interpersonal skill? Or should I look at it from the etiquette point of view?

kiss her. Maybe that is more clear. Obviously, if she does not want this, stop it. — Tom 6 mins ago
case and point why answers in comments is a horrible idea
@Tinkeringbell I guess it might fall under etiquette, but as it is phrased rn it is POB

@JarkoDubbeldam Yeah, I vtc-ed as well.... I'm not really seeing the Interpersonal Skills aspect there, and do I pay or not is one of those 'make my decision for me' type of questions..
I'm trying to write a good comment to both of those questions

Q: How to encourage askers to tell the end of the story?

peufeuEnglish Student makes a very good point in this answer: Less than 5% of OP's even post an update, I think. It would be nice to know how their problem turned out. @ExtrovertedMainMan I think that may be because it was deleted before picked up?
@NogShine Hi :)

I don't understand how it is an FR. Shouldn't there be a discussion to it ^^

@NogShine Nah, we don't discuss things. We just think 'nice to have, make a FR' :P
I think just the tag is wrong ;-)

@AJ You might wanna take a look at all those metas there ;)
@Tinkeringbell This brought me here.
I have a bad history on IPS. :P
I'm a reader here.

9:18 AM
@NogShine Ah :D well, feel very free to take a look and leave a vote :D
@NogShine Why?

@Tinkeringbell I only asked one question here and other one was too broad and closed. Didn't know how I could improve it.

@NogShine Do you still have a link? Or did we delete it during spring clean-up?
(I did that, and didn't leave a comment? Bad me! :P)

It's still there.
You left a comment'
I saw it.

Welp, it's been a while, but time to get back to flagging comments

@NogShine Wow... that's one of my better ones :P So, you can't really answer all the questions there, or part of em at least?
@JarkoDubbeldam Oh yeah, I might have forgotten about that too :P

9:25 AM
I find it surprising that there are some users that are diamondmods elsewhere abusing comments like this :/

@JarkoDubbeldam Well... look at the comments on Movies... very different culture than ours..

@JarkoDubbeldam umm.. are the comments deleted now?

@NogShine I've flagged a bunch
But like Tink said, IPS is pretty strict on answering in comments
whereas places like TWP generally have 5-10 answers in comments under popular questions

Yes, answering in comments is a very bad thing. They won't help the site.

@NogShine Not just answers, I think we delete any chatter not asking for clarification or suggesting improvements...

Q: Please don't write answers in comments

Arwen UndómielI've been noticing a trend lately of people writing answers in the comment section. What does this mean? When you write an attempt to solve the OPs question - whether it's a fully fleshed out idea or not - and dump it in the comment box. This is not good. Answers is comments are detrimental to ...

@AnneDaunted: as we already established, the OP added it. But it's irrelevant, hence should be removed. And moreover the question the OP eventually stated (via comments) mutates the original question into something different, like I pointed out above. If the goal is to belatedly some find some repartee for some toxic pattern of behavior that happened 9-12 mths earlier, it doesn't matter much if this is in France, Tahiti or on Mars. — smci Dec 1 at 8:46
Funnny... We have a ton of metas asking people to give their location/culture whenever possible...

@JarkoDubbeldam True :)... That's why I found it sorta funny in the first place.

got a pretty decent savings for presents so that shouldn't be an issue necessarily

Maybe I'll save it all up for fireworks next month..
That will give me an excuse to stay outside and not have to have drinks with the neighbours on new years eve
That reminds me, I still have that question to ask :D brb, writing a question :)

@JarkoDubbeldam Hahaha ;) What are you thinking of?
What misschief are you up to?

Would it be cultural appropriation if I snore during....
nevermind, can't think of anything witty
but yeah, I have a legitimate question
lol

Is it really offensive to snore in church? :P

Was thinking about that lol

(People fall asleep every time. I can't fall asleep without snoring. Somehow, people keep taking offense :P )

12:14 PM
but no

@JarkoDubbeldam What's the legitimate question then?
(I just can't figure out how to write down my New Year's Eve questions :/)

@Mithrandir Heh. You have something in common to discuss
Maybe you've even seen him in that room nobody talks about :p
@Tinkeringbell That usually indicates airway problems

well, I pinged him in there to say hello ;)

You're at a campsite. Rooms have 4 beds. Your room has two free beds and someone whom you know snores asks whether one bed is still available. How to respond?
Basically to the point of, the last time you shared a room, you couldn't sleep because of the noise

But yeah, falling asleep at a church is offensive. It's a place of reverence, and religious people think of the service as one of the most important things in the world. So yeah they'll be miffed when you can't even summon the attention to stay awake

12:17 PM
@JarkoDubbeldam Hmmm... Well, I've seen one girl get away with a 'Where are you sleeping tonight, then I'll be making sure I'm in the other building' once...

@Magisch that was a joke :p

@Magisch Hmm, when I fell asleep at synagogue the other day nobody got annoyed :P

@Mithrandir You're a kid, you have special consideration in matters of boredom

@Mithrandir different religion, shorter toes? maybe...

When you're an adult, people expect that you stay awake

12:18 PM
I wasn't even bored ;P
I had just stayed up all night, and I was just really tired

@Magisch Huh? The grey ones in our parish were always sleeping during sermons/praying... And yeah, there was one that snored...
(that's what sparked the joke btw ;) )

@Tinkeringbell try to empathize with religious people in that

@Magisch I'm still a Christian, although I'm not currently actively visiting a church on Sundays... But okay, if it's not a good joke, we can trash it...:/

nah
I only now got the entire thing was a joke
awh

So maybe we should trash it so no troll finds it? :D
Because it's not a very obvious joke?

@Magisch Well, your choice ;)

> So every few months I go away for a weekend with a large group (100 people give or take). We generally sleep in a camphouse, which has dorm-like accomodation with a few bunkbeds per room.

There are a few notorious snorers in the group. Previous experiences have made it so that I would prefer not to sleep in the same room again.

Last time, we arrived early, so we (me and my gf) were the first to claim a room. There were two beds left. Then someone, who is a known snorer, came and asked whether the beds were still available.
thoughts?

12:32 PM
Good to go :D.... you might want to add a 'polite' or 'without causing offense' into the last sentence though, to prevent people saying 'shoot em and hide the body' and that being a valid answer ;)

would shooting someone and hiding their body be offensive to that person?

@JarkoDubbeldam It's definitely not a polite thing to do :P

@JarkoDubbeldam It would be an offensive action, not sure if that's the meaning of offensive you're looking for, though.

:P
I think the answer is 'no, not really, but maybe, it's not all that nice...'

thanks for the edit

I talk in my sleep so I've been on the recieving end of this a couple times
Telling me that you can't sleep in the same room as me is fine and appreciated (as your friend I'm not out to cause you discomfort) but lying to my face is pretty insulting and belittling imo.

@Magisch Very true :)

A: How to tell a sensitive friend that they apologize too much?

Jarko DubbeldamWhy do you think they apologize too much? Is it affecting them in any way? If it is, why not point out to them why apologizing that much is bad for them. Explain it to them. If you just say they shouldn't do it, you come across as dominating, forcing your will on to them. However, if you explain...

1:24 PM
Ah, my question is going perfectly: no comments <3

@Tinkeringbell I enjoy explaining things but I have no talent for it

Yeah... well, I don't enjoy explaining things that much... if you don't get it after a few times, I give up.

I think the problem here was that I asked in the comments whether they could cite a practical application as an explanation/comparison. OP said not. So, then this is my go-to. But in the comments people were very convinced that this was rude, so...

2:14 PM
@Tinkeringbell that's a problem we faced in TWP. We'd get people calling answers rude, that weren't or doing something else that twisted the intent of the answer to something negative, then the answer gets downvoted into oblivion.

Why must mornings happen so darn early in the day? D:

@TheTinyMan because daylight savings time makes us all suffer.

@TheSnarkKnight Meh... I can agree with the 'I'm not a teacher' being ouchy... like the first comment there. The second was out of line I think, but well, I got a badge :P

@TheSnarkKnight Probably has something to do with me staying up too late, too. :-)

@TheTinyMan what kills me is when I wake up at 4 AM. Then it's "Do I try to go back to sleep, or just stay up

2:18 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Oof. What time do you normally get up?

@TheTinyMan 6:00, but 4 is just in that range where you might or might not be in the middle of a cycle if you get back to sleep. Sometimes if I force myself, I end up feeling more tired for the rest of the day than if I just get up and start going

it is a NAA

@Tinkeringbell RE: the "birthday" question. I think this is one where the etiquette is a necessary part of the Q/A, but the question as phrased should be off topic. I don't know how to edit it to be OT though.

@TheSnarkKnight That's what I was struggling with as well, and I don't want to start a comment war with Robert :P I think the question as it is now just doesn't invite the etiquette focused type answers (Agreed, there is 1 now, but I don't really think everybody might read the comments)
Weird, apparently it was closed and reopened? Or close-votes expired?
Weirder even: It doesn't show up in the reopen queu3e
I was very certain that question was at 4 close votes sometime today.

Q: Who pays for a birthday party?

SinjaiI've never really had friends, so I've never really celebrated my birthday. This year, though, I wanted to invite my friends out somewhere, perhaps Topgolf [1] (not an advertisement, trying to give impression of price/scale). Do I pay for everyone? Does each pay for him/herself? If it matters, ...

@Mithrandir That's strange, it wasn't on-hold when he made his comments :/
So, apparently, he really wants this one around.... then maybe I'll take a stab at editing it..
Can I rant at Robert? :/

ranting in general seems like kinda a bad idea

@Tinkeringbell not recommended
robert is the director of community management, iirc

2:33 PM
@Mithrandir I hope that doesn't happen often. Unilateral action by mods tends to irk the community.

@Magisch *development, I think
yup

@TheSnarkKnight Dunno about the community, but it irks me...

> I am the Director of Community Development for the Stack Exchange Network.

I explained why I wasn't happy with the question, because it could be interpreted both ways and I wanted confirmation of the OP before editing...

Well, if robert thinks it's on topic, it has to be
CMs are kind of the authority for that
So we'll have to make the best of it

2:35 PM
@Tinkeringbell there was a huge row over at TWP over a one.

@Magisch Well, if Robert thinks this is written down correctly, I will be editing and close-voting a lot less...

^^^^^THIS is what happens.

@Magisch no, actually. CMs can be wrong/overruled
i proved shog wrong a few days ago ;p

@Mithrandir and you're still standing?
wow
natural die roll 20, eh?

And the votes on Meta.SE have sometimes made CMs reconsider their position.

2:36 PM
@Mithrandir Well CMs make mistakes, but when you're talking about a question that fundamental (is / isn't this on topic) then I think the CMs are somewhat the authority

@Mithrandir and sometimes not

and you can always raise it on Interpersonal Skills Meta

I strongly disagree with any question that is a simple question of etiquette as being on topic. @Mithrandir I believe that I may do so later.

@Mithrandir I might.... But right now I'm pissed and in a ranty mood. So, I'll be taking a break first...

@Tinkeringbell never post drunk or angry, and if you're an angry drunk, this applies doubly
annnnnd...

@JarkoDubbeldam try to C the difference ;)

In hopes of bringing the social aspect more to the forefront then a simple yes/no decision

2:41 PM
@Magisch brilliant edit. I think that's enough to make it on topic.

Could you emphasize in the question that the location is the US
I know it has the tag, but it could be a bit more explicit

The tag does that I think

IMO, the tag is enough.

@JarkoDubbeldam FWIW, and many people not in the US may not realize this, WHERE in the US can make a difference as well.

2:44 PM
US are big
similarly how for someone in russia, either or may apply

@JarkoDubbeldam yeah, if you're in the Midwest, and etiquette question will have an entirely different answer, as will "what is polite".

in germany in general it's expected that the person who hosts pays for the party

I think it needs an etiquette tag?

So if you were hosting your own you'd pay and if someone was hosting like a surprise party for you they'd pay

2:48 PM
And I'm still gonna call Robert out on this in a meta.

here, all the guests pay for the wedding...

@Tinkeringbell no it doesn't

@JarkoDubbeldam Why not?
It's about etiquette...

because it already has the tag
^.^

@Tinkeringbell 2 minutes or so ago + epsilon

@JarkoDubbeldam Hahaha you're gonna do the whole alphabet? :P

nah, remembered epsilon is generally used for a small error, not delta

Well, at least we've got that voting culture going...
Now, let's delete that before things get out of hand ;)

2:54 PM
@Magisch it's the same for German Americans. We kept the custom, and America has a huge German influence.

@Tinkeringbell It is deleted

For me, it really differs per group of friends... I have friends that can easily pay for all of us, and I have friends that I treat when they are celebrating...

I'm finally at 4000 rep btw so now I can help delete answers and my LQP reviews are actually impactful \o/
@Tinkeringbell I do too and for those friends we usually organize a party for them
the host still pays but we're the host then and not them

Someone think this could need some backing up? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/7582/1599

Yeah, it's not like you can't discuss and decide to split the costs, but the default definitely is that the inviter pays

2:56 PM
> F1Krazy That's really something the mod should worry about, don't you think? Why don't you mind your own business, huh pal?
That is literally not how stack works. You have to defend everything you write and your whole conduct against any scrutiny by the community
