@GwenKillerby someone's got to prop up the bar ;p
Still a better love story than twilight I would actually consider this over ads if it was properly disclosed, and didn't go crazy on me...

And also, cereals are a SUPER INEFFCIENT way to take in food. buy a loaf of bread, cut it yourself. so much better

... hah...
@GwenKillerby my mom's a convert to the bread maker...
(also, if you live in many commonwealth countries - bread is a bit crap..)

@JourneymanGeek also good but it has a higher CPU footprint than buying bread

The Chorleywood bread process (CBP) is a process of making dough in bread production. The process was developed in 1961 by the British Baking Industries Research Association based at Chorleywood, and in 2009 was used to make 80% of the UK's bread. Compared to the older bulk fermentation process, the CBP is able to use lower protein wheat, and produces bread in a shorter time. CBP is able to use lower-protein wheat because some protein is lost during bulk fermentation of traditional bread; this does not occur to the same degree in mechanically developed doughs. The process had an important impact...
CPU footprint?

here's my unrequiieted love story

12:03 AM
@GwenKillerby I was getting to a point ;)

CO2!!!

ah
CHoelywood process dosen't actually have much co2, or flavour...

Get to it quicker, old man ;)

they just beat air into the dough...

@GwenKillerby Yeah. Another problem with food is that there's a huge trade-off between convenience/speed of preparation and cost.
Americans these days are busier than ever, which means that the cost of food has indirectly increased because people purchase prepared food rather than make it from ingredients.

here's my unrequiieted love story

(also, oddly, I think baking bread yourself is cheaper than buying it, but that's not really a factor here)
@GwenKillerby .... why is a static image a video?

getting back to my boot problem..........
and imma a bit self centered? ;) ;) <3

See, if it was an image, someone could see it immediately

@JourneymanGeek that was the fastest way i could do it.

Now there's a trend to bring AI processing technology to individual devices. Huawei's Kirin 970 has a built-in AI accelerator, but Apple (A11 Bionic) is beating them to market.

@BenN hey, are you awake?
@JourneymanGeek im not asking you to answer it, but do you find anything unclear about the question?

@GwenKillerby I did mention the screenshot thing, right?

@JourneymanGeek I did mention that it's already there?

Q: How do I move the DUAL-ly booted Win8 partition so that it keeps booting?

GwenKillerbyThis a laptop that came pre-installed with windows 10. I then dual booted it with Win81, which is good since the Win10 partition is now freezing five minutes at time. When I boot up the original Win10, the arrangement of partitions is this, there's a picture here: 1. C-Win10 Status: (Healthy, Pr...

Wow. Weird

hmm? I fixed it up a bit

Also, why is the L3$ 4MB? I thought Zen had 8 MB L3 cache per CCX? This points to more significant architectural changes.
Correction: It is 4 MB per CCX, not 8 MB. An 8-core Ryzen processor has 8 MB of L3$.
So, no change.
...or nope. It is 8 MB per CCX. I'm getting awfully confused.
Can a mod delete the above block of messages? @JourneymanGeek
Everyone busy right now? A room owner can just move them to trash. (@allquixotic)

holy shit; scan that QR code at that time index on your phone

Sorry for the inconvenience.

@allquixotic wtf none of the new iPhones ship with a quick charger

2:07 AM
@ThatBrazilianPony, can you move that L3$ block of messages to trash?

2:27 AM
sigh. So, more flag abuse in the Mathematics room.

2:57 AM
yesterday, by allquixotic
I'm getting the iPhone 8 Plus -- there are enormous flaws with the iPhone X, from worse battery life (than the iPhone 8 Plus - wtf Apple), to the fact that 99% of apps aren't smart enough to accommodate the curved edges, apparently even Safari, and will crop your picture, basically defeating the purpose of the bezel-less display
@allquixotic: Here's the deal with Apple: Their brand image is utterly reliant on being able to deliver a technologically superior solution.
This is part of the reason they're so secretive: the more information the competition has, the harder it gets for them to maintain that superiority.
In the case of the iPhone X, the main points of superiority are the A11 Bionic SoC and Face ID.
This is why Apple throws huge amounts of money into developing cutting-edge technologies and designing their SoCs entirely in-house.
The moment Apple is no longer able to assert a significant technological advantage in their latest flagship product, they will no longer be able to demand the sorts of prices they currently can, and investors will rapidly sell off their AAPL stock.

Bob
"face id" sounds a looooot like microsoft's hello

At this point, it is becoming increasingly apparent that Apple is just playing catch-up with the Android competition, so these keynotes are starting to feel like smoke and mirrors.
The A11 Bionic processor is faster than any other mobile SoC in its class, because it's designed entirely in-house and deeply tied with the software for maximum performance and efficiency.
Aside from that, it just feels like Apple is trying to keep up with the latest advances pioneered by Android device manufacturers, aiming to put them into a single, cohesive package. Apple has the advantage of vertical integration and massive amounts of money for R&D.
But for consumers not bound to a particular mobile platform, Apple's advantages are becoming increasingly difficult to justify for their cost.

anybody?

3:13 AM
Hence, Apple is insistent on being a step ahead of the competition. Their image of technical superiority is their very lifeblood.
Me? I'm 100% happy with my OnePlus 3T and see absolutely no reason to switch or upgrade.

@bwDraco whats the real advantage of iphone 8 over say, iphone 3??
if there is any to begin with

@GwenKillerby Way, way too many generational differences.

but in functionality, pretty much nothing

The iPhone 3G is almost unusable these days compared to a modern smartphone.
It has long been EOLed and most new software will not run on it.
(most apps assume at least an iPhone 5S IIRC)

@bwDraco quick question: does one physical HDD with four logical primary partitions/drive have ONE MBR? or FOUR

3:19 AM
@GwenKillerby One MBR. The MBR format permits up to four primary partitions.
The MBR itself is literally sector 0 on the drive.

so in theory, the FIXMBR command would also fix the second bootable partition that doesn't boot anymore? That's not crazy? Or very unlikely?

Extended partitions can be used to enable more than four, but that is rarely used these days now that GPT is supported. MBR formatting is still widely used for compatibility, though.
@GwenKillerby Make sure the active flag is set.
The system won't boot from a partition that isn't marked as active.

@bwDraco that's odd, because in the win10 "Disk Management" program, none of the primary partitions is marked as active or, perhaps ALL are: right clicking on all of them shows that the option "Mark partition as Active" is greyed out.
wasat?

What does GParted show? A screenshot would help.

@GwenKillerby I suspect you actually have a GPT disk

3:27 AM
don't have Gparted right now i just burned a rescue disk.

@GwenKillerby If GPT, then you may have an issue with your BCD.

yes. i have a 1TB gpt disk which rejects ALL attempts at using a rescue disk @bwDraco
...for now :| @bwDraco

UEFI booting works in a fundamentally different fashion. The firmware loads a bootloader from a special EFI System Partition to boot the system. It doesn't operate by reading machine code from sector 0.

@GwenKillerby this is why we tell people to back up first...

@bwDraco should i try repair BCD first or /FIXMBR ?

3:31 AM
@bwDraco I'm sticking with my OP3 until android P comes out...

@bwDraco I totally get that. Still, people always throw back up around so care free as if there's so much ROOM AVAILABLE for Back ups .... ;). But ur right, backups should've happened

In fact, the old way of booting was severely constrained because you only had 224 bytes IIRC available for boot code. Most bootloaders used this area to jump to a more complete bootloader elsewhere on the disk.

then probably rooting and hitting it with a third party rom and upgrading ;)

@JourneymanGeek I flashed LineageOS on my 3T day-one.

@bwDraco I rather run the official rom

3:32 AM
isn't MB 512 bytes?

also, both my phones have trivial bootloader unlocks ;)

fixmbr first? or repair BCD?

@GwenKillerby The MBR contains tables with the partition data.
@GwenKillerby Try repairing the BCD first.

(oddly, mine came with a dodgy version of oxygen, and I ended up flashing it with the stock one...)

hmmm

3:33 AM
The Jelly's straight from the OEM so... yeah

You might have a point, booting into the original OS, win10, i can still see Win81 partition..

Technically, with BIOS booting, the system dumbly executes the code on the very first byte of sector 0. The first few bytes are the instruction to jump to a later section of the MBR, over the area containing the actual partition table, to the actual "stage 1" bootloader code.

crap, my easybcd's both have viruses 1.7.2 and 2.1.1 virustotal.com/#/file/…
@bwDraco @JourneymanGeek do you have any idea how to repair the BCD without using faulty software?

It's possible that the detection there is a false positive, especially since only one product detected it
Also, huh, my main computer just froze up, rebooted itself, and now will no longer boot or even display anything (no signal) :|

@benn ha, i know EXACTLY what you;re going thru
@BenN okay you have it worse than I
@benn and now Virustotal reports it as okay ..... ????
@benn @bwDraco @JourneymanGeek its seems EasyBCD only works on Win7, Vista and XP. any suggestions for software that works on Win10 adn Win81?

3:56 AM
I don't remember all the details of your situation, but I think you might be able to rebuild the BCD with the bcdboot tool that comes with the recovery environment

Bob
easybcd is a pile of crap
last I checked it defaults to introducing non-standard changes that often break on upgrade

@benn the recovery environment that comes with the installation disks for Win10?

4:15 AM
I believe so

@Benn @bob wow something just ate 32 GBs of my C-drive! i'm out, right now.
bye

4:38 AM
easybcd itself is the virus
Literally the only time I used it, it hosed my installation, then the other software they sell hosed partition table.

Completed a system image backup on Bifrons. Still takes up four DVDs.
The main laptop is undergoing a backup to an external hard drive.
I've gone to great lengths to reduce energy usage on my end, but climate change is a huge problem that takes more than cutting energy use...

5:14 AM
@GwenKillerby Hmm. So the MBR stage 1 boot code is actually limited to 446 bytes:
> The last 66 bytes of the 512-byte MBR are reserved for the partition table and other information, so the MBR boot sector program must be small enough to fit within 446 bytes of memory or less.
A master boot record (MBR) is a special type of boot sector at the very beginning of partitioned computer mass storage devices like fixed disks or removable drives intended for use with IBM PC-compatible systems and beyond. The concept of MBRs was publicly introduced in 1983 with PC DOS 2.0. The MBR holds the information on how the logical partitions, containing file systems, are organized on that medium. The MBR also contains executable code to function as a loader for the installed operating system—usually by passing control over to the loader's second stage, or in conjunction with each partition...

You should Google these things. :p
(I'm being somewhat unhelpful on purpose. Chat's not really meant for this I'm)
If you knew tilde backslash is your home directory and /etc is systemwide config files a reasonable guess is A. But you really should Google these.

@JourneymanGeek psst, backslash is \; / is just a slash
you can tell because slash leans left while backslash leans other left :P
"in linux" it could be any or none of the above
I mean, you don't even necessarily have bash

@Bob oddly I have the very same problem with slash and backslash as I do with left and other left.

9:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek Thank you for the comment (regarding smart TVs). Can you elaborate on "suck"? And do you have an opinion on what qualities are desirable in a TV these days? HD, for example?

@FaheemMitha I think 1080p is "essential"

@JourneymanGeek I think that is the same thing as HD, right? And 4K is a step beyond that.

there's a lot of complaints over the firmware of smart TVs, they're often badly written, and considering your TV will at least see a decade of use, are likely to ge obsolete at some point
@FaheemMitha annoyingly some folks call "720p" HD as well
which is dumb
"4k" is really UHD
UHD is nice but there's not much content for it

@JourneymanGeek Yes. Like smartphones.
I see your point. But a smartphone is still better than a feature phone.

@FaheemMitha smartphones usually go obsolete in 2-3 years, and are designed to last... maybe 2-3 years?

9:27 AM
Though I don't know if the same is true of TVs.

@FaheemMitha I wouldn't consider the 'smart' features a fundamental selling point
Sure, you could have it for things like netflix, but other factors are probably more important

@JourneymanGeek Very true. Would today's TVs last longer? My mother bought a TV in the early 2000s and it was working fine till recently. Then the display got damaged. But it's still working. A Sony Bravia.

That said, our TV at home is 640x480, Plasma, and about 12 years old...

@JourneymanGeek I see.
@JourneymanGeek I hear good things about Plasma, but they seem impossible to get. At least online.

@FaheemMitha eh, probably harder to fix, but I don't see why a decade would be unimaginable
@FaheemMitha plasma is dead

9:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek That's a shame.
@JourneymanGeek Ok.

OLED has most of the advantages (and oddly some of the same disadvantages) without the insane heat generation and engineering challenges

@JourneymanGeek But that's not common, either, is it? I'll take a look.

@FaheemMitha its commercially available but pricy
and I feel its too newfangled for now ;p

@JourneymanGeek I see. :-)
So LED then?

LED's the backlight.

9:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek What factors do you consider important, besides 1080p?

@FaheemMitha well, I haven't bought a TV lately but..

@JourneymanGeek No, I mean one should go with an LED TV for now?

inputs, panel type (Stuff like IPS and VA is better than plain old TN), cost...

@JourneymanGeek Yes, I was looking for IPS. But didn't find much.
Of course, Amazon India doesn't have the widest selection...

also. I'd actually prefer to see the TV first, cause yanno. Subjective things ;p

9:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek If that's possible, sure. Often that's not an option.

heh, true

Even in the US I frequently used to buy stuff sight unseen.

second last display I bought...
TN (meh!) UHD (yay!) 3x HDMI, one of which was HDMI 2.0 (actually all of them are. VERY YAY!) DP (yay!) VGA (Whut? YAY!)....
display quality was ok, but did well with caliberation

@JourneymanGeek VGA? And not sure what DP is either. Looking them up. Thanks for the overview - that's very helpful.

HDMI is essential for a modern TV

9:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek Sure. But there are also standard, I think.

Display port is essential on desktops (laptops are a tossup)
VGA is nice for old gear
unlikely to find it on a TV
@FaheemMitha yup

@JourneymanGeek I don't follow. Display port on a TV?

so, how many things will you plug in?
@FaheemMitha well, monitor. Same...

@JourneymanGeek I don't know. I won't be using it - it's for a rental.
Hence the smart TV thing.

OH. Also, how you get free to air TV and how its connected
Ah, just get something reasonable then ;p
Samsung, LG and Phillips are safe ;p

9:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek It's mostly cable here, I think. But I don't watch that either.
@JourneymanGeek I tend to go with high end electronics for myself. But for a rental, I'm not sure.

cable via a box? Cable via ... roofnet?

I mean, they could smash the glass or whatever.

@JourneymanGeek Cable TV and Cable Internet. They string cables all over the place. I think a box is necessary for the Cable TV, probably.

@FaheemMitha that's why I call it roofnet

9:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek Oh, is that what you call cables strung all over the place?

yup. Not a thing here ;p
but its a thing in india

omg @JourneymanGeek are you still not sleeping? yer more like IRONJourneyman, dude ;)

@JourneymanGeek Here as in SG? What kind of cable tv do you get there?

its mid afternoon here
why would I be napping?

Some magic wireless thing?

9:42 AM
@FaheemMitha mostly underground cable. Fibre optic internet. All neatly hidden away
free to air is all digital

@JourneymanGeek Ah, right. India does underground cable too, but it's a mess.
But, as I recall, you're Indian too, so you know all that.

@FaheemMitha we're smaller so essentially "Oh we need cable" and most of it was done...
"we need fibre" ditto..

Bnagalore has excellent fibre infra now

@JourneymanGeek Much smaller. :-)

9:44 AM
I get 75 Mbps for the same price I was paying for 2 Mbps a while ago

Well, bangalore is relatively dense, IT wise...

I switched from MTNL DSL to Cable, because the MTNL DSL had become unreliable, and the MTNL people are mad. MTNL DSL was 8 mbps in theory, but 7 in practice. The cable people said 50 mbps, and that's actually what I'm getting.
I thought I didn't need it, but actually the net does feel snappier.

@JourneymanGeek quick question: for simple tasks like resizing partitions, why is Gparted better than Win10's own Disk Manager ?

Trying to deal with Indian govt bureaucracy is like entering some strange parallel world.

@GwenKillerby its offline. so you don't need to worry if you're using the partition

9:46 AM
yeah, they have re used the existing cable infra and have fiber optic points across the city.
So there's no cost of laying fiber cables to every house

On the other hand, its third party and things can go wrong.
(did I mention backups?)

Kind of like a Kafka novel, but with less paranoia and and more crazy.

And since indians are fixated on TV, we have great cable network

@JourneymanGeek me so dumb, cos i actually knew that

on backups, does anyone use cloudblaze to backup stuff
They seem cheap

9:47 AM
@GwenKillerby gparted supports so so much more partition formats and customization features

But the cable internet isn't terribly reliable either. On the other hand, they actually seem to know when it's down. The MTNL people seem to have no idea, and don't care.

at least on linux

@JourneymanGeek sure, sure, thats why i said for simple tasks

@HackToHell You're in Bangalore? Are you Indian?

9:48 AM
@FaheemMitha Maybe Indian bureaucracy is like the Japanese language? Cos they're both Asian-like??

@GwenKillerby actually, we can blame the brits for that

@FaheemMitha yup

@GwenKillerby I don't know the Japanese language. Is it Insane? Cos Indian bureaucracy is.

Are you in bglr too?

@JourneymanGeek Always a good idea.
@HackToHell No, Bombay.
Blaming the Brits, that is.

9:50 AM
Japanese is simple.

Though at some point, one does have to take responsibility for ones own messes.

@JourneymanGeek @FaheemMitha the brits hide their bureaucracy with their wealth, but mostly their arrogance ... BREXIT=BrickIT!

Bombay has even better internet I was told, they have a netflix and google peering ISP iirc

@HackToHell Really? What's it called. I'm using something called Hathway.

Well, the indian civil service did have british underpinnings

9:51 AM
I tried searching for an ISP that Indians didn't hate. Mostly I came up blank.

just that it never quite got out of the 20s, until it got pulled kicking and streaming into the modern age...

@FaheemMitha if you had to compare Bombay and Dehli to European cities, which two would they be??

The only ones that people don't say uniformly bad things about are small regional ones...
@GwenKillerby No idea. Why?
Big Third World cities don't really resemble European cities at all.

@FaheemMitha just to have a point of reference. imma teacher i do that all the time

@GwenKillerby You could go on Youtube and check out videos of Bombay.
Hot, noisy, crowded. Did I mention noisy.

9:52 AM
Best way to describe Windows Linux and Mac to old people is compare them to gas cars, diesel and hybrids
or automated and stick

Pavements with stuff all over them. If there are pavements at all. Very congested traffic. And of course there's that famous horn thing.

@FaheemMitha not about looks, but about the nature of their beasts

It's like they are trying to play a symphony and lost the sheet music.

hom?

@GwenKillerby Their beasts?
@GwenKillerby Car horns. It's an Indian thing.

9:54 AM
their character
fuggedaboudid

@GwenKillerby The description at the beginning of "In the Beginning was the Command Line" is stellar.

dunno what that is

@GwenKillerby Ah. Well, India is pretty screwy. It's hard to describe. Where are you located?
@GwenKillerby It's an essay.

im awake like 20 mins
europe

@GwenKillerby So I gathered.

9:55 AM
not effing britain

they're backpedalling on that whole Brexit thing cos its a BRICKIT thing
@FaheemMitha

If the Brits screw up their country, that's their problem. Who gives a crap?
Certainly not me.

@FaheemMitha have you ever heard of the "Gods Prayer for scientists" ? it's a 1960s thing

Though I'm a bit more polite when talking to actual British people...
@GwenKillerby I don't know. Possibly.
