Q: Story where many kids were fathered by a virus

kundorI am looking for a story which I read probably two decades ago, in the 90s, but which was probably already old at that point. Hello, the Restaurant!
Really sorry for my long absence from chat. First I was away doing stuff IRL, then stuff hit the fan in Mos, and when I came back (as well as being busy catching up with things IRL) I had to try to sift through the history and work out exactly what had happened and how and why. I didn't want to come barging in here until I had some clear answers for you. Well, I dunno how clear they are, but I've now talked to a lot of different people about what happened and started to kinda make sense of it.
I think the most important lesson for the future is: please don't be so hostile to moderation when it happens. That covers both soft and hard moderation, by both community and ROs/blues. Whether it's flagging, asking for a subject change, or deleting messages, please try to accept and learn from it rather than complaining about censorship, power abuse, or flag trolls.
12
Regardless of how you or I may feel about it, them's the SE rules, and we have to abide by them or go elsewhere. We need to pull together and make an effort if we want this place to succeed where Mos failed. I can't guarantee we'll manage - I thought we were doing well before, and look what happened - but I think I can at least see what direction we should be pulling in.
And with that out of the way, on to happier things! :-) I hear the theme of the month is robots, so here's your floof of the day:

@Edlothiad I'm not aware of those needing any special policy. Any "Is the theory 'X did Y' correct?" question is equivalent to a "Is there any evidence about what X did/how Y happened?" question that's obviously fine if it's clear and specific enough to answer.

> Science Fiction and Fantasy does not have that many [comics] questions, and not that many comics experts. - area51.meta.stackexchange.com/a/26876/55836
What O.o
I disagree

wtf

@AnkitSharma Prove it.

@AnkitSharma I think it would make more sense to point out that not every comic can be considered OT on Science Fiction and Fantasy....

771 questions tagged with [comics], out of +40k total. Comics experts? A few, yes, but judging by the number of questions? Maybe not that much.

So anything with a superhero is on-topic

9:53 AM
As opposed to plethoras of Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Tolkien's Legendarium questions.

@Derpy But when did literature decided to make monthly comics off topic ?

@Gallifreyan Consider that a large proportion - perhaps even a majority - of and questions are also about comics.
Those tags used to be called and until recently.

@Gallifreyan do you know about dc, marvel and other tags?

We're hardly "lacking" comics questions. They come up all the time

Assuming a half of respective tags are actually about comics, that still makes only a tenth of total question amount.

9:54 AM
This'd be like saying "We need a dark fantasy SE because they don't come up often enough." But it's on topic here, so you'd get the same or less visits.
@Gallifreyan Which is HUGE

@Edlothiad that's my point, just to make comics proposal work, we should not spread incomplete statements
@Ixrec that was my reaction too

Furthermore having a SE that's a subset of another doesn't make much sense. From what I can see all comic books should be on topic on lit, whether they are or not I don't know.

@Mithrandir Is monthly comics decided off topic on literature??

I was under the assumption that all questions about comics were properly tagged with appropriate tags.
@AnkitSharma No.
@Edlothiad I just don't want them there.

Last time I checked comics were on topic there

9:59 AM
What does that mean?
You don't want them there?

I don't like them.

What?

Except for some.

Can't tell if you're taking the piss?

@Gallifreyan that's the problem with generic tags like they hardly work in real implementation

9:59 AM
@AnkitSharma Well. If they didn't yet, I bet they would if someone dared to post a question about the last comic issues of Adventure Time or MLP....

@Gallifreyan then you are making statement out of your own opinion, it's better to raise it in lit.meta and then announce it

They shouldn't ban tags based on the content it's from. That's ridiculous. You have to create guidelines. If comic books are considered literature, then ALL comic books should be allowed.

@Derpy I think it's better to raise in there meta first, they did made graphic novel on topic and graphic novel is a blur definition

I don't see where all this comes from - I never said comics were off-topic on Lit, and I certainly advocated making comics on-topic on Lit. I just said that there is a thin line between graphic novels and regular comics, and the latter may not be a good fit for Lit given the audience there.

10:02 AM
To make it clear I am not against new proposal but I feel comics proposal add nothing new to the mix and the counter argument answer is based on personal feeling and presented as facts

@Edlothiad probably yes, yet I think that many would deem "childish books" not literature. Anyway, not an user on that site, so I don't really mind what they decide, nor shall I try to influence any decision.

@Gallifreyan In that case you should let the people decide. Not decide for yourself. The issue with comics.se is that it's mainly a subset off SFF.SE so your userbase would be a fraction of ours.

@Edlothiad I don't understand where you got the impression that I decided something for myself only.

@Gallifreyan seems like a proper time to decide it on literature meta only, if they feel all comics are on topic or not

6 mins ago, by Gallifreyan
@Edlothiad I just don't want them there.

10:05 AM
@Edlothiad A Manga is a Comic, it is Literature, can have Science Fiction & Fantasy contents.

6 mins ago, by Gallifreyan
I don't like them.

@Derpy They made graphic novel on topic so why not all comics ?

@Derpy I don't follow?

To be frank majority of comics book always have science fiction or fantasy theme
And manga is already covered in anime.se

@Edlothiad So? I don't want monthly comics there - so what? It's not like I can block people from posting comics questions in any way.
Especially given I myself asked a question about a monthly comic

10:09 AM
Comic.SE overlays with:
- Anime & Manga
- Literature
- Science & Fiction
AT LEAST. Could also overlap with more sites in specific cases (example: Monster Hunter manga... is that OT on Arqade?)
Sadly, the way Stack works there are many sites that overlays "but not completely"

I hope they don't cover adaptations, else they might overlap with movies and TV too

so, is is again the old
"something almost, but not quite entirely unlike tea"

> Proposed Q&A site for anybody interested in comics or animations, including graphic novels
animations - covered under movies & TV

@AnkitSharma What's wrong with overlap with M&TV?

@Randal'Thor If not already cleared then will say it again, my point is the whole comics proposal is a overlap to one site or other .

10:13 AM
@AnkitSharma Arguably so is SFF, now that Lit exists as well as M&TV :-P

@Randal'Thor then your point make no sense because there are TV show and film which are not SFF and same apply for literature
And SFF might have never came if movies & TV and Literature came first

@AnkitSharma You've got it the wrong way round: I'm saying all of SFF overlaps other sites, not that all of other sites overlap SFF.
@AnkitSharma Scary thought :-)

@AnkitSharma Sacrilege!

Because I have seen Area 51 proposal killed which are about mystery.se etc

10:17 AM
@Randal'Thor we should not go there, as it never end well. cc@Gallifreyan
@Randal'Thor so you missed all my points or was just joking??

@AnkitSharma Oh, you're quite right: SFF is sort of a dupe site now. But for people like me who specialise in sci-fi or fantasy, it's still a scary thought for this site never to have existed.
@AnkitSharma I haven't read the whole conversation here in detail, but I seem to be agreeing with you here.

@Randal'Thor literature and movies both added extar value to SE then SFF, so getting them was good idea. Comics.se on the other hand add nothing new
@Randal'Thor ohhh, sorry tehn :D

@AnkitSharma Yes.
And Movies is almost as old as SFF, I think?

@Randal'Thor one year younger at-least and we didn't got graduation that sooner I suppose

@AnkitSharma This is the point that I'm trying to get across. It's understandable if you were now creating something that's not covered elsewhere. Like M&TV covered more than SFF did, and Lit covers more than SFF does. However comics covers nothing that already exists. And maybe you'll collect the users into one place, but how much good does that do you with the realistic aim of breaking out of beta? Considering Lit has yet to break out of beta.

SQB
10:21 AM
SFF: message
M&TV and Lit: medium
Anime: style
I think I've used Pokémon as an example before. Depending on the specific question, it might be on topic on one or more of the following: Science Fiction & Fantasy, Anime & Manga, Movies & TV, Board & Card Games, Arqade.
For another franchise, add Literature.
I mean, there are Minecraft novels.

@SQB You think that is scary? There are Five Nights At Freddy novels.

SQB
Not scary. Just a lot of Stacks to choose from.
There's probably a "make a quick buck" Minecraft board game. There are novels, which are on topic both here and on Literature, there's Lego, there's — of course — the video game.
So yeah, there's overlap.
@AnkitSharma I strongly disagree with that, as there are loads of comics besides the on topic here superhero comics.

^ See? Even American comics writers agree that this madness has to end.

10:38 AM
@Edlothiad agreed

SQB
@Edlothiad The Peanuts, Garfield, Spirou, Gaston Lagaffe, Spike & Suzy, Maus to name just a few. Also, would Lit cover the artistic side of comics? What size did Franquin use to draw at?

@SQB Literature allow comics too

SQB
@AnkitSharma Also, what about the cartoon adaptations made of comics? Are those on topic for Lit, or do I have to as on MTV? What if I have a question covering both?
@AnkitSharma you have not read many comics if you think most of them are SF or Fantasy themed.
The only redundancy would be between Anime and Comics.se, but the other way around, since Anime is — more or less — a form of comics, a style, so Manga and Anime is a subset of all comics.

@SQB Heresy!

@SQB all adaptation who comes on TV or movies or web is on topic on movies.se
@SQB literature is not bound to being SFF only
@SQB on movies.se question covering adaptation and source material both work fine

10:47 AM
<annoying-fussy-mode>
Actually, Anime aren't comics since they are animated, unless you meant ani-manga:P
</annoying-fussy-mode>

I think we can safely assume he typo'd that one

SQB
Well, the (failed) comics proposal I started, included both comics in books and animated comics / cartoons.
And webcomics.

I have no strong opinion on this either way since I don't have a whole lot of questions to ask on any of the above

SQB
So where should I ask a question about Franquin's creative process? What size did he draw at? Did he use pen or brush?
Where do I ask how the cartoon version of The Smurfs influenced their later books?
Where do I ask a question comparing the newspaper strips of Garfield with the (coloured) books with the animated cartoons?
Had SFF not existed now, while MTV and Lit did, would SFF not add something neither of those other two can provide? The same goes for Comics.se.

@SQB Arts and Crafts
@SQB Lit
@SQB M&TV
@SQB What would it add that M&TV and Lit couldn't provide? Look at lit the top users are SFF users. There are loads of M&TV users here and loads of us there.

SQB
11:02 AM
@Edlothiad I don't know, @Catija, would it be on topic there?
@Edlothiad Why MTV? That would ignore the newspaper vs. comic books part of it.
@Edlothiad Perhaps, I'll give you that.
But still, the scattering of these questions among the different stacks, proves my point. These would all be squarely on topic on a Comics.se, should it exist.

@SQB ankit has clearly stated adaptation comparison is on-topic

SQB
@Edlothiad adaptation comparison from book to film or tv, yes. But between books?

For adaptation difference one medium should be a movie or TV or web series

@SQB newspaper strips of Garfield with the (coloured) books with the animated cartoons?

newspaper vs comics can't work

11:06 AM
I took that to mean a tv show

But they can work here if you able to prove it's SFF or on literature I suppose
If we can poof Nolan batman film are science fiction then anything can :P

SQB
@Edlothiad Yes, the animated cartoons means a TV show. But I'm interested in the differences between the three panel Garfield comics found in newspapers, and the later one-page-gag comic books as well.

I am sure Garfield must had some science fiction/ fantasy element once somewhere on it's run

SQB
Not much, except for the 3D-ish new animated series.

Pet Force is a series of books for young readers. It is a spin-off of Garfield, in which the main animal characters of the comic series are portrayed as comic book superheroes. The action takes place on planet Polyester. 20th Century Fox has released a computer-animated direct-to-video film Garfield's Pet Force. == Story == In another universe, one which exists parallel to Garfield's own, a team of five superheroes known as "Pet Force" serve Emperor Jon as protectors of his throne. Ruling the galaxy from the planet Polyester, Jon's reign is constantly opposed by the evil Vetvix. When Vetvix uses...

11:09 AM
@SQB nobody tried three way comparison yet, so can't say for sure ;)

for some bizarre reason I've actually read this

SQB
But as per our policy, that doesn't mean I can ask any and all Garfield question here.

I think SFF rule is once a science fiction always a science fiction, so by that rule Garfield is science fiction ;)
So ti should work here ;D

SQB
That is so not the SFF rule.

well, anything in the alternate continuity of Pet Force (facepalm) is on-topic at least
I'm not sure that extends to the Garfield Prime Universe (???)

A: Are works that aren't SF per se, but have occasional SFnal elements on-topic? (e.g. spy movies)

user56I suggest the following guidelines (improvements welcome): If it's marketed as SF, it's on-topic. (Alice in Wonderland, Clockwork Orange, etc.) If the ...

@SQB someone told me here that if in one franchise , if even a single film show SFF or fantasy element whole franchise become on topic. I am not sure if soemoen was trolling me or was that serious rule
> Yes, it should be. Friday the 13th VI onward are explicitly supernatural movies, and Friday the 13th I - V are ambiguous, to which we have traditionally taken a "when in doubt, it's on topic" approach. - scifi.meta.stackexchange.com/a/9907/6006
are on topic here too
I am sure I have seen Garfield doing sci-fi shit in some comics strips, so by that rule Garfield is as SFF as calvin-and-hobbes

SQB
@AnkitSharma Dilbert was deemed to be "sometimes" on topic, depending on the subject.

There has also been some buzz that "Wonderwoman is not American enough" from certain unsurprising sources. So, were there actually any stars or allusions...
