Q: Chromium keeps notifying me about things I already checked in Chrome

NickI have installed on my system Firefox, Opera Neon, Chrome Canary, Chromium and my favorite, Google Chrome. It's so hard managing my multiple accounts on multiple browsers. The most annoying thing is when I check my subscriptions out on chrome and then after a while, Chromium notifies me about i...

:( I keep asking bad questions on this site
Why?

@Nick just use one browser
or at least don't use both chrome and chromium

@Avery I need multiple browsers. Multiple people at home each with multiple multitudes of multiple accounts.
Enough accounts to start a click-farm actually.

@Nick your intentions look like they are on the darker end of gray

@Burgi Appearances can be deceptive ;)

@Nick I agree with the close voters. The question is very unclear exactly what you are asking.

4:09 PM
just a heads up

@DavidPostill dangit... you don't understand my question. I just want the other browsers to stop notifying me once I check something out on another browser.

alas no @burgi

Using....Words...my kryptonite.

@Nick Perhaps you can include a screenshot of the notification you are talking about?

Over the last 2 years, I’ve heard developers all over the world talk about why they leave a job, what makes them happy, what frustrates them, and what they hope to find. We just finished a big research project ab …

4:13 PM
@DavidPostill ... the normal notification... they don't happen simultaneously, and they all look the same. I never know which browser is telling me waht. I'm unsure how helpful a screenshot would be.

what notification?

^ +1

question!
what the hell is wrong with echo

@Burgi the ones that pop on the side.

@Nick I give up. Please give us a screenshot

4:17 PM
@DavidPostill yeah, ping me again
Please
someone
anyone
...really... anyone?

@Nick no

@Nick maybe

Folks, in your opinion, would this headset work with a typical laptop headset jack. Mine is 3.5mm, and it combines mic and headphones.

@DavidPostill These notifications
Not these specifically
the Youtube reccomendations.
Each browser shows the same subscription notifications. doesn't google already know I watched all that stuff?

don't sign into google on each browser

4:23 PM
@NickAlexeev It will work but it might suck.
@Burgi have to. Google is sort of like my OpenID. Everything uses my same google.
Else, I have to assign a browser to each of my family members...
they're not going to listen to those rules :/

@Nick why have a different browser for each family member, when a single browser like Chrome can have multiple personalities/users with separate cookies and bookmarks and sign-ins?

Someone has never heard of browser profiles.

Ah yes, I can even pin little chrome icons to the task bar for each of my family members.... but they won't notice it. they'll randomly always use mine.

Chromium is blue. Canary is Yellow. Chrome is chrome. It's easier now.
@DavidPostill I have. and I wish I could lock them.

@Nick you can change the icon for each shortcut independently of other shortcuts on Windows...

sign out when you finish

4:29 PM
If your family members had their own pc user logins they wouldn't be able to use your profile.

or create separate system users

@allquixotic You mean manual icons for shortcuts.... gawd.

Why are you all sharing the same account?

@DavidPostill haha, as if they'll ever let me do that. No, that doesn't work here.

@Nick yeah, gawd, that's sooooo hard to do... it takes like 10 clicks

4:30 PM
@Nick So stop complaining then. You have a social problem not a computer problem.

@allquixotic exactly. Also, no profile lock. Atleast i can do app lock in my current scenario.

this sounds like an XYZ issue

@DavidPostill Computers are supposed to fix social problems. See how TheFacebook solved student connectivity and socialization issues at Zuck's college? Let that be a testament to that.

just create local system accounts for your family

you do not understand south indian privacy culture...

4:32 PM
i do

there is no privacy here.

make some
you don't stand there and watch your parents having a crap

set up VMs for everyone

@NickAlexeev no
don't waste 35$ for that. You can pay like 10-20 more bucks and get a much more decent headset

@allquixotic lol
@Burgi that's pretty great advice

4:40 PM
i'm a font of wisdom

hey, look. All 3s on the star board. Maybe my lucky day.

@Nick Or, just set up a VM for yourself, then you can ignore everything on the host, and they can deal with whatever. Your sanity is shielded by the VM

@GypsySpellweaver will the vm save my sessions? like I'm in the middle of coding and my dad jumps in takes the seat, shuts it down, will my session will be saved?

yeah just pause it

No need to "shut down" the VM, us VirtualBox and you can use "Save State" like hibernate

4:42 PM
@Burgi and I can safely shut down my actual system, restart it and then restart the VM

@Nick haaaaaaaaaahahahha

you were lecturing others on security last week yet don't follow your own advice

@GypsySpellweaver And that can be done automatically? Like auto save state every 10 minutes

@Nick Not for the VM state, no.

@Nick Facebook gave rise to the death of socialising IRL, it didn'tsolve crap.
It's also the place where antivaxxers and the such spread there gross misinformation. Also, that's where you'll actually find fake news.

4:45 PM
@Nick Do you have to leave the chair at the very second that dad jumps in, or can you "save" it first?

@Nick just liveboot Ubuntu with persistence
Pull the usb out when dad materialises

@GypsySpellweaver You must meet my father.

do you not have your own PC?

@Rahul2001 aahh... this is brilliant. I've never thought of that.

...
and our ideas weren't good?

4:49 PM
*subtle cough*

@Nick Is it a Windows or Linux computer?

@Burgi lol.

racist! ;)

@GypsySpellweaver both. I used to use ubuntu 16.04 but everyone here prefers windows
@Burgi lol

just use local users

4:51 PM

you can live swap between them

YOUR FOOD WAS GARBAGE @Burgi
@Burgi again..no. it's easier pulling out a stick than switching users on windows

@Nick Then if the Ubuntu on a stick don't work, try portable apps instead.

you risk the integrity of the USB drive each time you pull it out

@GypsySpellweaver Yep. I use them all the time. They're awesome

4:55 PM
@Burgi Win + L takes a whopping 1 minute 40 seconds to bring me to the user login page. My system lags like hell.
@Burgi Yeah, I just need to make sure no other process is using it, right?

@Nick @Rahul2001 The live Ubuntu stick would mean rebooting to get into Windows, right? That's longer than 100sec.

^ +1

@Avery @Nick Why do you think it would suck? I've got this nearly identical one with a different jack, and that one does a decent job.

@GypsySpellweaver yeah? no hot swap?

no...

4:58 PM
@GypsySpellweaver yep

@NickAlexeev it looks very flimsy and cheap, and you can get a better one for a bit more money.
it wouldn't exactly suck, but you can get more out of your money.

@Avery Okay, I could get a much more decent headset for about $50. Is there a particular one you could recommend?

@Nick Dude. No offense, but how exactly do you take ethical hacking workshops without knowing this stuff?

is mic a requirement? Or rather, what's the intended use?

@Avery Main use case is teleconferencing at the office (with and without video).

4:59 PM
hometime

@Rahul2001 Because I google stupid shit and I get some unbelievable answers that sometimes actually work.

@Nick that is not the type of hotplugging you're looking for.

@Rahul2001 i know XD just an example of me googling
i would have put in lmgtfy but that doesn't navigate to links.

What's the point if you aren't going to find what you need?

@Rahul2001 I often find wierder shit that come in handy later
@Rahul2001 also, that's why I'm a help vampire in chat. I seek people like you to curate things for me and give me reccomendations out of your experience.

5:06 PM
Heh

Also, about my workshop, this is as much hacking as I taught them. The rest was simply intro to Kali. How to google and be a "pro" skiddy. How to use Git, Github and use LAMP to implement a fake sign-in phishing attack. Pretty basic stuff.
It went exactly how you imagine it.

@Nick have a view at portableapps.com and see if that might help. Side benefit is that you can use the same USB on any public computer for the same "environment"

ok tnx
Hey, can anyone here see what's on fb.com/nick.official ?

@Nick same

WannaCry only affects Windows XP, right?

@jokerdino what
no
it affects:
- linux stuff with wine

- windows 10
- Server 2003 - 2017

> - linux stuff with wine
Surprising

I actually got a video!

hmm
I should know if my PC is affected, I guess.

cc @Rahul2001
it's nothing too interesting
also I suck at video editing
I suck more than I think I do

6:01 PM
Cool!
@Avery I've seen a lot worse

@Avery lol wot even

that has zero editing
here's also one with zero editing

Do you have a fork bomb?

not anymore, since I accidentally forkbombed a friend
at startup.

6:09 PM
Still a friend?

yes.

Something's not right.

lol

it was me fighting him back for sending nsfw overwatch stuff to me
so yeah, instead of me unfriending him, we stayed friends but I got scarred for life and he got forkbombed

@jokerdino I DO!
Just... made one

7:16 PM
Hm. What if I post a link to gossipmonger on r/InternetIsBeautiful ?

@Rahul2001 would get downvoted
randomise it

@Avery no wail

like, put two people together in one room. that'd get reddit's interes- no, wait, that's omegle.

any other sites like omegle and chatroullete that are worth going into?
I like video chatting with people and getting to know them
finding good ppl is though

no.

7:47 PM
I'm trying to find Firefox's "Bug Zero" which was that IE was the most popular browser. I recall reading about it multiple times, but I really just can't find it or references to it. All of the key words in my search return tons of unrelated zero-day bug reports. Do any of you remember Firefox having this "bug" as a kind of mission statement?

wut
i have no clue what you're on about @Dane :/
there's no bug 0 :(

@Dane no, I just remember Ubuntu having a bug zero about Windows having the lead market share
anyway that "bug zero" about Firefox would've been closed long ago
closed fixed

8:18 PM
Right. I remember it was in the news when the bug was closed.
I tried searching around bugzilla, but the lowest ID bug I can find is 101, and I'm not sure if the "bug zero" really had an ID of 0.
@allquixotic - do you have a reference for Ubuntu's bug about Window's market share? That sounds like it was inspired by the Firefox one.

See Mark's closure comment here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1/comments/1834 ------ Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace. This is a bug which Ubuntu and other projects are meant to fix. As the philosophy of the Ubuntu Project states, "Our work is driven by a belief that software should be free and accessible to all." "Ubuntu software is free. Always was, always will be. Free software gives everyone the freedom to use it however they want and share with whoever they like. This freedom has huge benefits. At one end of the spectrum it enables the Ubuntu community to grow and share its collective experience and expertise to continually improve all things Ubuntu. At the other, we are able to give access to essential software for those who couldn’t otherwise afford it – an advantage that’s keenly felt by individuals and organisations all over the world."      * http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/our-philosophy Non-free software leav

So... just got a Lenovo Flex 4 at Best Buy. $230 before tax.

that'll set you back a ways on your saving up for your desktop, no?

I know, I know, but it's not much.
I was looking for a cheap, on-the-go productivity solution along the lines of @JourneymanGeek's HP Stream 11 and found this little gem. Usual caveats, 2GB RAM, slow Celeron, blah blah blah, but 64 GB of eMMC, which is better than the mere 32 GB I see on lots of these cheap machines and enough to let me install my core apps with some space to spare.
11.6" touchscreen 2-in-1, which is nice for the money.

Hmm. The Old New Thing is broken

Applications should make a system call to take your permission whether they are allowed to encrypt data on your PC or not then i would give this permission only to my browser for TLS. Ransomware would not be a issue then.

Keyboard's meh, but not an issue.

oh i posted in the wrong chatroom

1x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0, all Type-A (no fancy ports). Full-size SD card slot, HDMI, Ethernet, and headphone jacks.

@DavidPostill TRWTF is IIS

On the heels of this post yesterday:
23 hours ago, by bwDraco
I have several questions regarding reinstallation of Windows 10 on a cheap laptop with 32 GB of eMMC storage.
At least I will not be on such tight storage constraints.
64 GB is still not much, but at least I should not have to worry about low storage causing issues when updating, etc.
Your thoughts, @allq?

8:55 PM
@bwDraco played with systems of a similar caliber in the past and didn't find them tremendously useful; I'm kind of a resource snob

(Celeron N3350: 2C/2T Goldmont (Apollo Lake) @ 1.1-2.4 GHz.)

today I could get by with 8 GiB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD for dev + youtube + productivity purposes (no gaming), but for comfort I need a modern i7, 16 GiB and a terabyte SSD :P

Heh.
This is basically in the spirit of JMG's HP Stream 11.

my MBP 15" is an i7-6820HQ, 16 GiB LPDDR3, 2 TiB SSD, Radeon Pro 460 + Skylake GT2 on-board graphics

I'm building a Ryzen desktop soon, as you know, but I kinda need a better mobile productivity solution since I can't carry my gaming laptop any more.
I'm not asking for much.

9:13 PM
Unboxed the system, not much inside: just the laptop itself, AC adapter, and a small pack of documentation.
For reference, this is the Best Buy-exclusive Lenovo Flex 4 1130: bestbuy.com/site/…

@DavidPostill All of Microsoft Blogs is down :(

Most common complaint is poor performance, but that's unavoidable for a sub-$300 laptop.
@JourneymanGeek: just got a new, cheapie ($230) laptop at the local electronics store; start from chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/37418522#37418522
I'm kinda surprised at what you can get these days, even if it's slow.
A third of the RAM in my phone, for crying out loud, but $230? Can't beat that.

@BenN I wonder if they forgot to patch their servers :)

9:35 PM
Going through the initial setup...
Yikes. Windows 10 v1511. This is going to need a big update...
I was hoping it was running at least v1607 out of the box...
The factory image at least isn't too bloated. It has Lenovo utilities, McAfee LiveSafe, and an Office 365 trial on it, but not much else.
I've seen far, far worse.
I don't know if I want to put Norton Security on it. I still have a couple of license seats left on my subscription, but I'm kinda leaning towards using stock Windows Defender given the resource constraints.

I would be inclined to just lay down a Windows 10 1703 image on it
And go with Windows Defender
(or Windows Defender Antivirus, as it's called now)

Hmm. System has about 42 GB free disk space. Not bad.
Windows 10 can be pretty compact on resource-constrained systems.
It's entirely passively cooled. CPU's pegged.
Not seeing any throttling (yet).
CPU's throttling a little bit, doing 2.2 GHz. Not unexpected.
(maxes out at 2.3 GHz)
Display isn't particularly bright at 100%, but again, not a surprise for a $230 system. I'll do measurements later, but can't really work the colorimeter while the machine's busy updating...
It does get rather warm under constant load.
Unplugging the system doesn't noticeably impact performance.
...okay, the max speed is 2.4 GHz on one core and 2.3 GHz on both.
We're definitely memory-constrained and virtual memory compression is in full swing.
As for network performance, the Wi-Fi is getting the full 120 Mbps of my Internet connection.
The system's surprisingly responsive but application launch times are very slow. (Yet again, not a surprise.)
The photographer on the left is me :-)

10:15 PM
@bwDraco you don't look like a dragon

Heh.
Suffice it to say I'm a shapeshifter :P

are those guys playing touch rugby or something?

@Burgi That's just the players celebrating after winning the championship.

ah
i'm at a stag party on saturday

Battery life seems to be pretty decent even when the system's running full-bore. By my estimate, 4h seems to be worst-case battery life, with 6h advertised. Granted, this is subpar these days for this class (low-power netbook), but it's not bad.

10:22 PM
we are going karting

Have fun :)

turns out the karts are electric
is it bad that i'm researching the track layout?

@Burgi Not if you want to win! ;p

thats what i'm thinking!
the video is really useful actually
it shows the braking points
watch me now do terribly
i think might be the lightest in the group, but i have weedy arms
you can't grind muscles in 5 days

@Burgi You can each lots of spinach though ;p

10:34 PM
you think farts might increase the thrust?

...so, this system is the first to get a demonic name: Bifrons.

when i met commander hadfield, someone in the audience asked him about bodily functions. basically he said its a little disappointing because it doesn't work because the "nozzle" is the wrong shape....

I intend to name my systems after theological demons.

@bwDraco Just how many systems are you planning on buying naming?

10:38 PM
@DavidPostill Oh, I'm not concerned about the namespace. It's large enough.

This is a list of demons that appear in religion, theology, demonology, mythology, and folklore. It is not a list of names of demons, although some are listed by more than one name. The list of fictional demons includes those from literary fiction with theological aspirations, such as Dante's Inferno. Because numerous Lists of legendary creatures concern mythology, folklore, and folk fairy tales, much overlap may be expected. Names of God, list of deities, and list of deities in fiction concern God and gods. == Key == Each entry names a demon and gives a source in parentheses. Sources nam...
It's a big list :)

my current machine is called "titan", i've kinda maxxed out....

@Bob: For reference: Athena, Artemis, Juno, Nyx, Hestia (raspi), Phoebe, Cloacina. Bia is currently semi retired, tho could be used for a future fileserver. Retired names are kitten, tamandua, blackbeauty. Oh, and My dad's netbook is called Ash ;p

@bwDraco nice selection of ports. and eh, being a lenovo, in this day and age I'd do that fresh install and careful selection of what you need
My stream is mostly the same

@JourneymanGeek Seems to be one of the cleaner system images I've seen out of the box.
Downloading Windows 10 v1607 via Windows Update...
@JourneymanGeek Not sure I'm going through a clean install, but I'm not too worried.
It's a recent system. I doubt it has any undesirable software on it.
Not affected by either.
Can't tell what the display material is, but it's probably mineral glass or plastic (I can't tell). I don't expect Gorilla Glass at this price point.

11:31 PM
...and Bifrons is being restarted for the first round of updates, including a feature update to v1607.
I suspect it'll take a while before I can continue setup, given the slow processor and limited memory.
