1:30 AM
m.slashdot.org/story/214105 last line is killing me. MS chose not to use WebKit cause they didn't want to contribute to a monoculture on the web? :p

Bob
@allquixotic Urk - now I think I need a code-signing certificate too :P
In this case, though ,it should be an internal domain one... hmm...

Bob
1:41 AM
www.CACert.org is a not-for-profit organisation that offers code-signing certificates for free to trusted individuals. — cjakeman May 2 '09 at 19:06
FF message: "www.cacert.org uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown." — RoadWarrior Jun 9 '09 at 22:02
lol

@Bob Get a Comodo PositiveSSL certificate from Namecheap.
$9 a year for a certificate that works for almost everyone.
It's what my blog uses.

Bob
@DragonLord code-signing

Oh, okay.
That's a bit harder to get.
I thought you were trying to get an SSL certificate.

Bob
I'd use StartSSL if I wanted a personal one.

That's a site issue.

Bob
1:50 AM
But this is for work. And only used internally. And for signing PowerShell scripts.
I think we'll either just use a RemoteSigned execution policy, or I might see if we can get an AD CA set up
A personal code-signing cert isn't really suitable in this case

Code-signing certificates start from about $160 a year.
A Symantec/Verisign one costs $500 a year.
If it's internal use, you'll need to set up a CA for the network.
Not familiar with the process.

Bob
@DragonLord StartSSL is $60 for two years.
@DragonLord I know it well enough, it's just if it's worth the trouble...

2:29 AM
@Bob: For reference: Athena, Artemis, Juno, Nyx, Hestia (raspi), Phoebe, Cloacina. Bia is currently semi retired, tho could be used for a future fileserver. Retired names are kitten, tamandua, blackbeauty. Oh, and My dad's netbook is called Ash ;p

Bob
2:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'll probably forget by the time I get home, but ok! :P
Ah, a well-written PowerShell script is a thing of beauty
glares at batch and VBScript

XD
@Bob: You can always search! ;p
Of these... hmm..
I can ssh into Phoebe from outside, and connect to nyx and athena over CRD ;p
and of course, IPv6 everywhere, when it works.
Which it wasn't quite yesterday ;p

3:17 AM
Net neutrality got a huge win today: usatoday.com/story/money/2015/02/26/…
3-2 vote in favor.

3:30 AM
I anticipate a sell-off on CMCSA, VZ, and T tomorrow
CMCSA already took a dip today
Given how much ISPs want to stop net neutrality, I wouldn't be surprised if they collectively pour hundreds of millions of dollars into reversing the decision
It's going to cost them dearly

They're probably doing it as we speak
alongside stifling local ISPs

Net neutrality is great, but I fear we're going to see our Internet bills go up within a few months, possibly dramatically
As in a hike of 25% or more

Until one ISP realises they can actually beat their competition by being nice ;p
(UK has A&A. We ... well have really good small ISP choices)

There's too little competition.

That's the real issue

3:43 AM
Here in New York, we have two major ISP choices: Verizon and Time Warner Cable.

I have...
I donno, 4,5?
Maybe 6
3 if you wanted TV as well

The US's broadband system is really, really bad compared to other countries

Three seperate possible choices of backend
(ADSL is probably still around, fibre and cable)

It's not like the government owns the infrastructure, the companies own it

Would be nice to have more phone competition, the three telcos that do phone are too comfortable

3:44 AM
That's the key issue

@DragonLord: Our government built it out and spun it off

Bob
I have lots of ISP choices. Hint: they're all ADSL, and most use Telstra's DSLAMs anyway.
Keeps one from hiking the price too much, but doesn't leave many options for actual better service.

lol
Fibre is pretty fantastic

Bob
@JourneymanGeek So I've heard.
@JourneymanGeek See, that was the plan.

There's FiOS available where we live, but it's a bit too expensive for our taste
This fibre service has the perk of being truly symmetric: upload and download speeds are equal.

3:50 AM
60 quid a month gets me gigabit down, static IP for a one off 50 dollar payment, and a US/UK VPN thrown in

Bob
> Speed Up Array Comparisons in Powershell with a Runtime Regex
There are so many things wrong with that sentence.
Well, one thing really.

Wish we were so lucky. The fastest fibre connection here is $300 $285 a month for 500 Mbps.

Bob
But it is very very wrong.

Price is only guaranteed for two years and can will go up afterwards.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ok, Singapore has been promoted to the top of my list of places to move :P
@DragonLord The fastest fibre connection here is... oh wait. Well, I guess if we registered as a business and got them to run it out here... maybe $10,000?

3:53 AM
XD
Fastest connection here that I know of is 10gbe.

Bob
Then it's $300/month for 100Mbit.

ALso, business internet costs more.

Bob
> Min Charge $12,176 | Includes Setup Fee
Well, not far off the mark.
@JourneymanGeek Here's the thing: they won't run fibre out for consumers
Even for business I think it needsto be pretty much the CBD, which I'm not in... which makes this literally impossible
Stupid governments trying to save a bit of money now... then spend ten times that amount to upgrade last-mile in a few years time.
Scratch that, since the gov change I swear they've stopped construction completely, not even the FTTN they now want to do.

@Bob: They installed a fibre out for free for us ;p
its about... I donno
300-400 dollars if you were dumb enough to opt out?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek As I said... that was the plan
Far cheaper to install fibre for a whole neighbourhood at a time (as in, still FTTP but all done at once), than it is to run it out for each house individually over a few years.

3:59 AM
yup
or in our case, a building

We're currently on a very slow DSL connection
The distance from the DSLAM isn't helping at all

kickstarter.com/projects/1426448868/… this seems supercool @JourneymanGeek
ahh, I can't ping myself
or superping. Boo

@@10208 won't work?

Nope
Stops me from abusing SE chat to send myself notes I guess ;p

Bob
4:46 AM
doh
the one time this week I'm not at home, the M-Duos get "delivered"
and it's raining
the last massdrop package was just left in the middle of the path
so when I get home it'll either be stolen, wet, or a pick-up notice
fuck

Bob
ffs
and my brother never picks up the damn phone

Oh
whoot
PAYDAY!

Bob
5:07 AM
lol

5:43 AM
(I need to do the math, but I should have ~half the amount I budgeted for fun stuff left. Having the money I had saved for my speakers helped a bit tho, especially since I used that for the stream ;p)
I can probably start hardware upgrades in march ^^

@Bob next holiday tip the driver :-) it makes mine really freaking nice , like a waitress begging for tips.
Many people tip the USPS mail persons on x-mas, which must account for a large sums, because they basically deliver once a minute (average) on routes around here. Then just like Fed-X or UPS you tip on the holidays and the driver might not be the same.
So i tip off the holidays some, with the driver who has gained familiarity (i am more sure it is my regular driver)
a box of cookies qualifies as a tip, but UPS , doesn't want a package they might be seen taking home. (the idea being they might be suspected of stealing packages) so cash goes better.

Bob
6:01 AM
@Psycogeek Tipping isn't really a thing here. And I never see the guy anyway.

which probably frustrates them all the more when nobody is at the door when signatures are required. something they are still paid to do, but like any unfinished job , still frustrating.

Bob
@Psycogeek I was at home when they dumped the bloody thing at the gate.
I was home all day that day.
Was also home a few weeks ago when they left the parcel pickup slip. Definitely no doorbell ring.

@Bob: we don't need a doorbell. Snauzers have good hearing.

One driver (UPS) would give my doggie dog biskets, which he would grab then ignore. So UPS driver got the dogs all happy to see em. but USPS instead usually carrries pepper spray instead of biskets. 2 completly different methods, USPSes methods not working at all, as all the dogs want to Keel them.

lol
Mine loves DHL delivery men
they gave him a teddy years ago ;p

6:09 AM
so in the long run, USPS is scared to death of even my mid sized dog, running in fear of thier life, and not getting out of the truck. UPS on the other hand the dog can hop up IN the truck to greet em. (if i cant stop him)
Someday i should make a yousatube with both of them , so one of them realises that "war does not peace make".

Bob
> When deployed, we can:

Set the user (or machine) execution policy. Not really a security issue; if someone can get onto the system to run a script, restricted script execution can be bypassed trivially anyway.
Sign the script. Requires a code-signing certificate, maybe from the AD CA?
Use a batch file as a launcher - launch the script with powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File script.ps1 (I did say it's trivial to bypass the execution policy - it's more insurance against ---idiots--- unaware users downloading and running scripts than a real security measure.)

Sound quality on the stream is Goooood
I'm pretty sure it sounds better than my desktop speakers

Bob
o.O

(My desktop speakers are probably 20 years old or so ;p)
They... output sound, and will probably outlast any other gear I own ;p
But they don't sound good

7:08 AM
hm. CNY Lion dance. Its slightly too loud to think.

7:28 AM
And they are downstairs. I CAN FEEL THEM THROUGH THE FLOOOOOR

Bob
@allquixotic I... I think the SP4 is a real option for me
> The device will also be launched in 2 versions and will have a screen size between 13 - 14 inches," wrote WCCF Tech. "The Surface Pro 4 will also be priced lower than the current Surface Pro 3 in order to attract more customers."
@JourneymanGeek We had that last week :P
They were banging the drums right above the food court I have lunch in.
Almost couldn't eat.
Those things are loud

Bob
> Fixed a potential security issue where up to 32 bytes of gameserver memory could be unintentionally disclosed.
O_O

8:02 AM
Yeah, they are
And my boss has a hangover ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm confused what your first "yeah" is for now :P

Those things are loud, so loud I don't remember saying that.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Got the M-Duos. The packaging is... bleh. Why is there a dictionary excerpt? :S

a what?

Bob
I'll try them after dinner

8:09 AM
Looks like they just wanted to fill space in the packaging ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Sound... ehhh. Decent? :P
I can't do the flowery descriptions of the head-fi guys :P
Really good fit though.
Cable... feels fragile :(

lol
I can't either
A lot of it is bullshit anyway ;p

Bob
Ok, the isolation is really good
Can't really hear anything around me, even with the music off
The Pistons feel more solid for outdoor use, but the isolation is pretty poor - they're more the kind of "in-ears" that sound alright kinda loosely sitting there
OTOH that's more comfortable over long periods of time :P

8:27 AM
lol
Maybe swap the tips?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I don't think they're compatible?

You think US dollar will keep spiking?
Any economist here?

Oh, don't the pistons come with different sizes?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek You mean change the size, not swap with the M-Duos? :P
Yea, they do.
They just don't work too well for me.
@JourneymanGeek Oh, the actual proper Pistons are better
I'm talking the cheaper version :P

Oooooh
I'll probably get the proper pistions ._.

Bob
8:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek I got both to compare. Currently using the paperbacks.

Once I work out how much I have left XD

Bob
I think I prefer the longer headphones. The pistons are a bit short for my ears :\
@JourneymanGeek Yea, actual Pistons isolate better. Not as goodas M-Duos.
M-Duos medium fits well out of the box. Pistons small fits, kinda...
The medium is much wider than the small, so there's something about the shape.
M-Duos feel more secure too

@Bob: Well, my current headphones are cheap creatives ;p
(Which I may leave at work)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Just trying Pistons again. I think I like the sound better than the M-Duos o.O
It sounds more even, I guess is a good word for it
More... natural?

;p
neutral?
Some headphones boost bass.
Which isn't really desirable unless your source is shit

Bob
8:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek Eh. Samsung phone, so I guess average :P
Unless you mean encoding
Which is a 320kbps Spotify mp3, I believe

Actually, I find its more the amplification stage

Bob
The current song is quite hard on headphones, I suspect
Rather bassy, and at the same time a lot at the higher end
...I really should be testing with the fort; that's probably the best DAC&amp I have

I've had some headphones/devices that worked well with bass boost.

Bob
i.e. the only non-stock one :P
@JourneymanGeek Also, the controls on the Pistons work really well for Android users :P

(Actually I had a pair that sounded off unless you boosted the bass)
oooh

Bob
8:50 AM
Play/pause works like most other phone-targeted headsets. But it also has volume controls :D

Yes!
I find this potentially VERY useful

Bob
lol
Yea, when I was using the M9Ps (Meelec), the lack of a volume control was pretty annoying
kept having to pull my phone out of my pocket

Yeah
Most android headphones are one or no button

Bob
Could've done the press-and-hold bit, but that's really inaccurate
@JourneymanGeek This is a bit of YMMV though
Apparently it's only really supposed to work with Xiaomi phones

Bob
8:52 AM
It just happens to work with my S4 :P

lol
Guess what my mom has? ;p

Bob
actually... brb, going to try with the L520

ahh
Does a single button do anything on windows?
I've never actually thought of trying that

Bob
Not a clue!
Oh, not on Windows tablets/laptops :(

I also think its a hardware thing.
Basically the button bypasses a resistor so that there's a change so... ;p

Bob
8:56 AM
...I have no music on this phone
eh, MixRadio will have to do

Bob
"Most played pop"
...this might be a bad idea

pity I can't give you access to my google play music account ;p

Bob
HOLY SHIT THAT'S LOUD
:O
THE VOLUME CONTROLS WORK

OH THEY DO. CAN YOU HEAR ANYTHING ELSE?

Bob
8:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek WHAT?
(Apparently 10/30 on my L520 is more like ~50-60% on my S4...)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...single pixel gif?
wut
But, seriously, this is amazing

2 messages moved to Trashcan
Yeah ;p

Bob
Pretty sure I'm just going to be using the Pistons from now :D

Was the simplest lazy way I could think of
lol
I'll probably order a pair soon. I HAZ MONIES.
(actually, I just got 10 dollars in a red packet from work)

Bob
9:00 AM
Hm. Spotify works on WP8
Might repurpose my L520 into a music device :P
The sound quality out of this little thing is surprisingly good

lol
I got my music set up portable
(partially to save space on the Stream. I have everything I can installed on an SD card, and... I figured its a good way to keep the stuff on the SD card movable)
Wait
What's the L520?
/me assumed it was a laptop
ahh.. lumia

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Lumia 520...

ya. It only hit me a little later ;p

9:48 AM
superuser.com/questions/883291/… not sure if I should post an answer. Its super vaguely off topic.

i was thinking about getting that new homeworld
very tempting

Its pretty
I pre-ordered ;p

off steam?

9:56 AM
haha, we all have our bad days i suppose :P gl with homeworld

lol
I'm at work, Will do when I get home

mainly play cs go these days

(or on the train, I have steam on my netbook ;p)

JM, i thinking about just bought an enclosure 3.0
about just buying*

You'd still need to connect power somehow

9:58 AM
some of those enclosures have screws at the bottom, where the drive basically won't move

ahh
Might work

it will connect with the pins
and not move

I suppose
those things, IIRC are only rated for ~50 inserts and removes BTW
(also, sorry to bump you again, but RA's the right place for this)

I superglued that (well the replacement for that) back

is that for a printer?

(I don't use that port any more tho. Lenovo has quality issues with charging/yellow jacks)
Laptop
My X220
Lovely machine other than that

10:07 AM
yea, give them 5 years, they will be the next acer

heh
Pity

@JourneymanGeek paycheck after taxes ?

@Psycogeek I don't make enough for taxes ;p
The government does hold part of my pay for when I get old, just like the barkeep in Leon ;p
(Ironically, I'm currently using a HP stream 11, as folks here are probably tired of hearing, and I love it. Build quality is impressive, and its fairly inexpensive. One or two minor annoyances but nothing that makes you want to defenstrate it)
and HP's build quality has supposed to have been shit for years

YEARS

ya
this is nice

10:12 AM
priced like a chromebook

Yeah
Hard disk space is a bit tight, especially after you install office 365
Screen and camera are meh
keyboard is.. excellent, and I hate chicklet keyboards in general. This somehow is pretty easy to type with my big ol paws.

how is it on power consumption?

No idea. Supposed to be up to 8 hours on a battery?
Haven't really tested that

@Boris_yo as much money as the US is in the hole, and as much money as the feds keep printing (see much complaining about the "fed" (federal reserve operated by private) it must be being manipulated falsely . just like the gas prices which did not stay down even though the price of crude did. To make sence of it is to know who is making out by fudging the numbers, and it is not the economist, they get it right 50% of the time.

Does run really cool (and this thing is fanless)

10:15 AM
US doesn't owe as much money as people think
alot of countries owe us money, no one ever talks about that

@Sickest I calculated it out in how many trucks full of gold would pass by you on the freeway, you dont have enough time to wait for them to pass. then i calculated it based on how many "the weight of the washington monuments in gold" and that puts it in perspective. then i calculated it out as "all the gold in the world that is both above and still below ground" get yourself out of that hole :-)
That being unprecidented for a country that at one time had all of its paper backed up by sometihing.

Wow, I'm currently on a website where, when you search for "a", the site returns everything they have that contains "a" O__O

Another good calculation is to figure how Many "all the gold in fort knox" it is :-)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Build quality might be shit, but support is decent.
@JourneymanGeek I've said before that HP keyboards are actually quite nice to type on :P
Well, the laptop keyboards.
The desktop ones suck.
@JourneymanGeek Piston buttons don't work on either tablet (Asus and Lenovo) :(

10:37 AM
@Bob: I tend to hate island keyboards ;p
I can't complain about this one, and I've complained about the keys on both a 17 inch asus, and macintoshes
(We use MBPs at work. Meh)
Not standard issue except for some jobs

spam ---> superuser.com/questions/883318/… with about 4 seconds left of life

1 hour later…
11:51 AM
Yay. Daiso had a laptop/tablet sleeve the right size for the stream

Bob
12:20 PM
o.O
@JourneymanGeek I've been looking for two for the tablets...
Didn't think of Daiso
Then again, I was going for neoprene
...and probably would have to walk through Daiso a good half dozen times to find it

this is that low budget foam
Its temporary, I'll get a nicer case at some point
There were these MBA cases for ~50 quid that seem nice but I'd like a little more time to think about it, and they had zippers
(the daiso one does too but meh. 2 dollars)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...that costs half as much as the laptop
I guess Apple fans won't mind though

Bob
O_O
oh good lord

Oh, 50 dollar cover for a 300 dollar laptop?

This white-balance illusion hit so hard because it felt like someone had been playing through the Monty Hall scenario and opened their chosen door, only to find there was unexpectedly disagreement over whether the thing they'd revealed was a goat or a car.

Yeah, that's one reason I went with the daiso one

Bob
saw that at work
no clue what it meant

Its better than carrying it around inside a arguably reusable non woven fabric bag
lol
That blew up on another channel

Bob
went home

Looks white and gold to me.

lots of questions about some random dress
hours later
more posts about it
someone referred to xkcd
I just made the connection to xkcd... oh god
@JourneymanGeek It is, in the photo. Actual dress is blue/black.

;p
SOME people see it as blue/black

Bob
@JourneymanGeek shrug
annnnnd I'm throttled. seriously, the chat throttle is ridiculous
we have kicks/bans/suspensions to deal with actually spammy users
so, I type fast. why on earth is that a bad thing?
