Dog
2:00 PM
@JourneymanGeek My last 3 jobs in a row have been exactly this same situation. Not really a huge deal IMO
Sometimes the last guy just sold out, sometimes he was utterly shit and they desperately wanted a replacement
Not necessarily an indicator of the position being bad

@Dog heh. I'm currently kinda meh about the job market so... I'd say take it anyway no matter what ;p

Dog
@JourneymanGeek McDonald's? >_>
I'm in two minds. I don't want to just go in circles repeating the same mistakes over and over and wasting years of my life doing it

@Dog within reason ;p

Dog
But then this one does genuinely seem to dovetail with my long term plans. But so did the last one. And the last one.

@Dog well, you say you wanna migrate.
so...take the job and start working towards it ;p

Dog
2:02 PM
On the other hand what's the worst that can happen if you apply? Bugger all. Just say later you changed your mind if you don't want it.

Dog
@JourneymanGeek The job's fixed term and ends two weeks before my migrating-to-australia deadline

Which is also good

Dog
Well, technically you have to be under 31 to apply for the visa, not actually under 31 when you go
But the job ends when I'm 30.95 so... coincidence?
But again, I did exactly the same thing 3 years ago and here I am sitting here unemployed, homeless and unhappy.

Dog
2:04 PM
Scratch that last bit, it's pretty much a guaranteed given nomatter what the situation when you have "double dog depression"

I'm 2 of 3. And I didn't quit my job

Dog
See!
I quit my job to be happier... outcome? Going back into the same cycle of unhappiness.
Also I'm missing a board gaming session with hot girls to fill out this application
If it were any other company this job application page would be ringing alarm bells already.
Actually it still is. "Not secure", "ASPX", "Email my password to me"... -_-
And dat css

Corruption tag is gone
lol
That IS pretty terrible

@Dog How many phish are in that pond?

Dog
Should I be doing this on insecure public wifi in the city centre?
Clearly it's a sign. I should abandon this application and go out gaming with hot girls instead.

2:09 PM
Looks like they need my wife's help, and she don't know tablet from laptop.

Dog
@Bob, I need your wisdom :-(
Bobski has a proper job right?
And lives in Oz
And is fluffy
All the things I want to be

Bob
@Dog I have no wisdom :(

Dog
THAT IS. NOT A FOX
Still fluffy
@Bob Halp
How old are you if you don't mind me asking?
I get the feeling it's "older than me" but I'm trying to figure out by how much
If it turns out to be younger than me i'll be extra jealous

Bob
@Dog wait what you do?

Dog
@Bob Wat wat I wat?

Bob
2:15 PM
@Dog almost certainly younger than you
@Dog have to be under 31?

Dog
o_0
@Bob The one year working-holiday visa scheme requires you to be under 31

Bob
ah

Dog
Government's considering increasing the age to 35, but not yet finalized

Bob
@Dog I'm young and dumb :P

Dog
@Bob But so am I

Bob
2:16 PM
At one point I think I might've been the youngest in this room.
Rahul probably takes that spot now..?

Dog
@Bob :-0
How can you be smarter than me and younger than me?
Next you'll say you're paid more than me too :-(
@Bob Younger than 28?

Bob
Eh, not smarter and pretty likely paid less, so yea...

Dog
(Not sure if you don't want to disclose publicly or just don't wanna answer me)
shudder
FML
Clearly foxes are wiser than doges

Bob
I don't think anyone here actually knows my age... that's probably the most definitive answer I've ever given :P

Dog
@Bob Don't you know JMG IRL?

Bob
2:18 PM
Nope!
I don't think I've ever met anyone here in person.

@Bob Or have you? BWUHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Dog
@Bob :-o

Dog
@Bob lol
Reminds me of the stupid signs on the motorway to glasgow

Bob
2:21 PM
@Dog Well, not unless you actually are that cat on the roof.

Dog
"Don't drive tired"
"Belt up in the back"
"Check your tyre pressure"
Wait WHAT? ON THE MOTORWAY?!

@Bob "Whiles driving" ?!?!

Dog

@Mokubai

Bob
@Dog Well... better stop saying I botched it...

2:22 PM
@Rahul2001 Yeah, gave it a shot on Anniv, not fired up the Creators machine yet...

Bob
@Mokubai The bold is pretty weird too :P

@Bob I suspect that they're trying to kill the spelling and grammar nazis.

Dog
Was gonna say I have a hilariously botched off-site "private messaging" system... hxxp://is-scotland-an-independent-country-yet.uk/?my-name-is-XYZ-and-I-have-a-se‌cret-message-for-you.txt
Dump a secret message into my server logs where no-one else can see!
But err, yeah I don't wanna "botch" that
shrug, old, non-updated copy of Windows... am I missing something? What's so special about Powershell BenN's God?

Bob
@Mokubai Ah, hands-off nerd gnazi sniping :P

Dog
I always thought Bob was older than me. Shit.
Excuse me while I go kill myself

Bob
2:28 PM
@Dog :(

Dog
"I want to be like Bob when I'm older"
"You're already older"
Esc => Quit to Main Menu => New Campaign

@Dog we were checking for emoji support
4
A: How do I deal with emoji in Command Prompt?

Rahul2001I experimented quite a bit with emoji in cmd, and these are the conclusions that I came to: In most cases, you can substitute the emoji with ??. This is what the netsh wlan show profile (which lists all the network profiles) command shows me: In the above case, you can simple run the command...

the first two SSIDs have emoji which get displayed as ??

2:45 PM
@Rahul2001 Seems to be the same in Creators... thought there might have been an upgrade

@Mokubai I don't think it's crossed MSFT's mind yet
I don't think it will for a loooooong time

Aye, seems to be a good lot of "why no unicode in powershell?" questions on the interwebs

> This is not a PowerShell deficiency. It is a deficiency with the Windows console subsystem which PowerShell.exe uses. The console subsystem does not support Unicode but code pages instead which dates back to the DOS days.

I'm not sure lack of emoji is a bug ;)

Bob
@Dog :(
@Rahul2001 Console subsystem has been getting consistent updates since Win10 came out... Unicode is getting better on it. Slowly.
In the meantime: use the ISE

2:51 PM
@Bob ISE?
> Hadn't his college roommate always told him that 90% of his CompSci major came down to how well he phrased his Google searches?
lol

yesterday, by bwDraco
Ysmir's beard, Dash Charge is F-A-S-T!

Bob
3:06 PM
Some hackery required.

OK folks. Time for other duties, including a 2hr bus trip to the store. 532 minutes left on the edit free-for-all. Have fun :D

@Bob COOL!

@bwDraco I saw it the first two times you linked it
and yes it is ;p

Dog
3:20 PM
@Rahul2001 isn't this any university degree?

@Dog I wouldn't know... :P

Dog
@Bob see, bobs the smartest person here, again

@Dog hm.

Bob
Ok, narrowed it down more. What you need is (a) don't use the console subsystem (PS ISE works), and (b) set the underlying console codepage correctly ([Console]::OutputEncoding works, chcp doesn't)

Bob
3:24 PM
In PS ISE, the underlying console isn't allocated until the first external command... so that chcp in the above screenshot is unnecessary but there must be a console command of some sort first
@DavidPostill Emoji in powershell is easy. Emoji in powershell while calling external commands like netsh is not.
And apparently there's still no good way to work with wlan profiles in native PS

@Bob Add a comment to the post, I'm too lazy... I already did with your old screenshot :P
UPDATE! This screenshot shows the command necessary to enable unicode in powershell. Thanks @Bob! — Rahul2001 5 mins ago

3:37 PM
@Bob Who are you? What have you done to @Bob?!
@Rahul2001 read that as "the command necessary to enable unicorns in powershell"

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy *whistles innocently* I'm Bob, of course. Who else?
@ThatBrazilianGuy 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄
It does that too!

annnnnnnnd queues full

@ThatBrazilianGuy he's in sheep's clothing.

wait wut
edit free for all?
am i missing out of something here

lol
you do realise its a tag cleanup weekend, right?

Dog
3:48 PM
@JourneymanGeek fox in sheep's clothing or wolf in fox in sheep's clothing?
As in if he's a wolf in sheep's clothing now then he must have been a wolf in fox clothing before

@JourneymanGeek me? yes
i'm editing, and keep fillin ye queue -:D

@GypsySpellweaver Those are automatically rebaked in the HTML to be https:// even though the Markdown remains the same
Strictly speaking, they don't have to be fixed

+78 rep today \o/

:D

@BenN Unless you try to edit one, that is, then you're forced to fix it as well, even for a tag edit. Grrr

3:59 PM
Yeah :(

@djsmiley2k I maxed out on rep, and kept going in the free-for-all.
I know there's some badge for that, but haven't looked it up yet.

Mortarboard

Woo-Hoo, finally get a graduation cap :D To bad I don't get a sheep skin to go with that. I could use one of those.
@BenN Found out there are certain words that can't be in the title too. "Help" being one of them. Had to redo the title for one of the tag edits cause of that too. Oh well, it's all for the better anyway.

Yeah, sometimes that quality check gets in the way, like when a banned word is in an actual error message
If you're sneaky, you can put a zero-width non-joiner in the middle of the word to trick the quality check but not search

@BenN Some one got sneaky with those in a regex somewhere too. Not sure where now though.
Ah ha! I remember, it's in the Chat room Easter Egg trigger. Got bunch of ½-width and some 0-width spaces in it. I guess to reduce copy/paste use. Thought I don't know why that would matter.

4:19 PM
@JourneymanGeek :p

@BenN The spreadsheet is your creation, as is the post about it in meta, so "you be d' man" for this. One post has a lock on it, so I can't touch it. Guess that falls to you :D
11
A: What do you put in your computer repair toolkit?

hyperslugMy laptop, if that counts. 80% of the time I'm troubleshooting network issues, so I'd rather use a tool that I'm positive works.

The HTML has already been rebaked to use the new protocol, and since it's locked, nobody will ever edit it and break the rebaking, so I think we're good

@BenN There is another piece that may be on the roadmap to HTTPS, or not (but should be): profiles. Some profiles have images and they aren't HTTPS either. Get the broken lock on some of them.

@Bob For read-only stuff, there's the managed Windows.Networking.Connectivity.NetworkInformation class
Somebody could probably write a fancy module to P/Invoke the native WiFi management functions to edit
@GypsySpellweaver Hmm, that is a concern. Not sure what we can do about that :/

4:44 PM
@BenN Most profiles are network-wide, so it's going to be a bigger issue, and solved at a higher level. You get to "pass the buck" on this one. :D

Bob
4:58 PM
@BenN IIRC that was WinRT, no?
I remember looking at this when Win8 came out

5:27 PM
@Bob ROFL!!!!!! OMG!!!!
You became a sheep!
that's amazing
and yes, I got the reference :D
can you put that in your chat profile, though, please? "Beep, beep. I'm a sheep."

6:00 PM
why isn't my chat profile updating? it's been half an hour since I changed my pic to a cow

@GypsySpellweaver nice +88 today so far
my excuyse is 2 kids
oh god
I just realised there's 39,000 tags questions tagged delete
can't it be mass deleted, and hilight questions where it's the only tag?
And also, it's not going to stop people adding it either?

6:16 PM
Before I ask a full Q, any thoughts on what I could try if a hard drive (taken from desktop) prevents another computer from POST-ing?
Drive was otherwise/previously functional

oh wait no, 401
right, I can beat 401 :D
@bertieb is it the only drive?#
@bertieb have you just screwed up the boot order by adding a drive which became C:

@Bob Ah yes, it might be - you have to do a weird thing to make PS load the assembly, but then it works
@allquixotic It can take up to an hour for your chat profile to sync with the main site

@djsmiley2k Drive in → no POST (stuck on enumerating devices AFAICT); drive out → computer POSTs fine
There are 7 other drives in the machine

PSU can't cope?
remove one of the other 7, add this one back
or bios is crappola and can't count to 8

It's booting Linux/Xen

6:18 PM
0 - 7, fine, xD

It works fine with another drive in there
As the 8th
Just this one which seems to be problematic

So this one specific drive breaks it?
ok odd.
I can only imagine for some reason it's pulling to much power?
enumerating devices... raid card?

No card, just the mobo SATA ports

weird :/
sorry, im' outta suggestions

I may re-add it to me desktop machine and see if it completes an offline SMART test
No worries
The drive may be goosed; but I thought there might be something obvious like "oh that sounds like an invalid GPT" or similar
Basically I'm fervently hoping I don't have to buy yet another drive to replace one (another one I moved over had read errors/bad sectors; one in a location very recently written to

6:24 PM
yeah
is this part of that 2tb collection you were badblocking ?

Well remembered!
Same exercise, different drive tho
So it's a different drive that seems to have failed in a different way

I haven't badblock'd the other drive yet; I hdparm'd the unreadable sectors and they got reallocated nicely
Will do it soon, and if I see the reallocated sector count climb I'll know things aren't hunky dory

Dog
6:38 PM
So there's an "Other" and "Prefer not to say" box for Sexual Orientation on this application form but not for Gender
Why's bob a sheep?

@Dog I still can't help feeling that gender can be defined by science into maybe 3 different catagories
as it's a physical thing

Dog
@djsmiley2k Gender is a societal construct!
And they don't even have 3 different boxes

lol ok
male / female / adronagous.
/me can't spell too

Dog
@djsmiley2k Just repeating what that british ozzie commedian told me
See, this website gets it
@djsmiley2k IMO what you're referring to is sex
> gender1
[jen-der]

noun
1.
either the male or female division of a species, **especially as differentiated by social and cultural roles and behavior**:
the feminine gender.
Compare sex (def 1).

2. a similar category of human beings that is outside the male/female binary classification and is based on the individual's personal awareness or identity.
Alternatively
> sex1
[seks]

noun
1.
either the male or female division of a species, especially as differentiated with reference to the reproductive functions.

2.
the sum of the structural and functional differences by which the male and female are distinguished, or the phenomena or behavior dependent on these differences.

@Dog I'd expect a counciling website to go into more detail about this.
and that 'definition' is a very recent idea
I think my point was that my head still sees it at the same as 'sex'
maybe it's not, I dunno
re-defining words is hard

Dog
6:58 PM
@djsmiley2k Yeah that's what I'd thought most of my life

I have no problem with the idea you can move between them
or that people might feel differently, to what they physically are

Dog
Then half my friends decided to come out as transgender, androgynous, pansexual and LGBTQIAPDetcetcetc

@Dog those al sound like sexual propferences to me
other than andro.
which is litterally you have the organs of neither
I see the world as 'Q1, do you have a penis?' 'Q2, a vagina?' 'Q3, neither'.

Dog
@djsmiley2k Trans is a biological state as well

I don't care if you like boys girls or plastic bananas.
@Dog can you be born trans?
I guess you can

Dog
7:01 PM
"Had a penis, had sex reassignment surgery and now it's a vagina"

so yeah ok,
then your'e female

Dog
@djsmiley2k No, not really.

just stating how I see it
If you've had a sex change, you're now whatever sex you changed to
there's still only 3 to choose from
M / F / Null

Dog
Aside from all the "born this way" stuff, you're born genetically male or female (or sometimes both or neither, but that's not relevant to trans)

yup

Dog
7:02 PM
Trans is when you're biologically one sex but psychologically feel you belong to the other sex/gender
So while it's not a sexual preference it's not a state you're born in either

So I don't concider trans a gender
I fully agree it's a 'state' a person can be in
but I don't think of it as a gender.

Dog
It's like the gay/bi/queer stuff, but rather than being "different" in who you're attracted to it's being different in how you see yourself

as it's not, it's believing you're in the wrong body
yeah
still doesn't change your gender in my view
I think of my self as slim, infact I'm not

Dog
Yeah it's believing you should be in a different body and not the people you want to sleep with should be in a different body.
Wait that just sounds wrong

hehe
but that doesn't change who you are does it?
it just changes who you believe you should be.

Dog
7:04 PM
tl;dr: I'm a cat who thinks I want to be a dog or vice versa
Can't tell

From the imagadry and dna test, i can confirm you're a cat
Change wording on form to say 'Identifer' instead of Gender and all the problems go away
new ones arrise

7:25 PM
@djsmiley2k You are missing "both" (hermaphrodite)

ah yes
I'm supprised no ones got angry and told me i'm wrong and insensitve yet
user image

hmmmm

8:00 PM
@Bob Meow, meow. I'm a cow.

@allquixotic Do you milk yourself? ;p

8:15 PM
I don't currently have a strong opinion on such things, but it's a fun read

allquixotic is a sheep too?
What's going on with the world

@Dog Lambs to the slaughter. >:>

@Dog No. A cow. As it clearly says on his ava.

@DavidPostill what gives with this one? Has an unrecoverable recovery tag. Me thinks it's a mod-only fix this time.

Q: Recover a file deleted using rm command in Linux

ganapati Possible Duplicate: How to recover a removed file under linux I have accidentally deleted a very-very important file in my Linux (Ubuntu) machine using the command rm. Is there any way to recover it?

@GypsySpellweaver Let me take a look.
@GypsySpellweaver Worked for me. No idea why it wouldn't for you.

"merged" probably has higher edit privilege requirement.

9:10 PM
Merged questions are effectively locked, only mods can deal with them

I believe merging produces a lock

<-- still <2k

@Mokubai @BenN TIL. Thx

Also shows up in the non-mod revision history: "Post Locked by Sathya ♦"

9:13 PM
All well and good, but for me "edit" was grayed out :(

Yep, only mods can edit locked posts

Knew there was a reason for handing out all that bling :D

So why wasn't it just closed as a dupe?

Unclear. There isn't really a point to merging if there are no answers on the source
Unless you want to prevent standard users from voting to reopen

@DavidPostill `Cause they dinn'a have yor logic to guide 'em

9:16 PM
@BenN That's what I was thinking.

@DavidPostill timeline suggests it was, then it got merged later

Yep, in the same session - IIRC you can't merge until the question is dupe-closed

sometimes putting all the answers in one place is a good thing

@Mokubai Ah. So merging moves all the answers to what was the duplicate target?

Aye

9:18 PM
Ah, that explains why I don't see any deleted answers; they probably get their parent ID reassigned in the database

noto bene

can't remember if the answers literally get moved to the new question so they're not seen at all, don't use it much.

Ah, that is what happens - see this answer's history

@BenN Aye, I was just looking at one of my answers I know got merged. They vanish from the old Q.

9:23 PM
Just glad there was a valid reason I couldn't edit. Thought maybe I'd hit some daily limit or something. :/

Hovering over the grayed edit link will tell you the reason you can't edit

@BenN All kind's O' tricks in them sleeves. :)
I just got done with a few days of learning the tricks and secrets of image link markdown. Now you're revealing more trade secrets.

@Mokubai @BenN There is a review crying out for a merge. A migrated question that is also identical to a question asked on SU (both have answers). I'm going to try it out :)

@DavidPostill lol. Gotta try out them wings :)

Damn. Error "At least one of the questions for the merge must be closed". Let me try again.

9:30 PM
You have to dupe-close a question before merging it

@DavidPostill Yeah, close as dupe first

Success
Beginning merge of question.Id = 469271 into question.Id = 404244

Moved 4 answers to master
Moved 1 comments to master
Moved 0 favorite votes to master
Master now has 2 active answers
Master now has 12 active comments

Master now has 0 favorites
Successful merge

@Mokubai BTW, curiosity. How do you pick which Q to call the dupe of the other? Age, style, whim?

@GypsySpellweaver Speculative quality mainly

Usually the one with the best answers.

9:32 PM
The one with higher quality (better answers, generally) is usually the target
In most cases, that's the oldest, but sometimes not

Though as the answers get moved I'd favour the question quality over answer quality, personally.

@Mokubai What you said.
The one most likely to get good Google placement.

'sactly.

@Mokubai The questions were identical in this case. It was a migrated cross-post.

Is that a bounce?

9:34 PM
@DavidPostill Yeah, if both have answers then merge. Otherwise closing one is fine

@GypsySpellweaver Dupe closure is the only kind that doesn't reject the migration

@BenN The deleted deleted answers also got moved.

@DavidPostill They gotta have a trail too.

@GypsySpellweaver The OP posted the same question on two sites. The other one got migrated to SU. So we have the same question twice.

Tried to cross-post and it bounced :D Cool.

9:38 PM
anyone have any experience with IPv6? I cannot for the life of me get it working.

What's up?

@GypsySpellweaver We don't describe it as a bounce as the migration succeeded. You could call a failed migration as a bounce I suppose.

@Seth with an ISP? within a LAN?

The cross-posting bounced, came home.

need to describe your network topology and the operating system(s) involved, as well as your confidence level that the devices in question support IPv6 to begin with (plus your ISP)

9:40 PM
@allquixotic That sounds like a full-fledged site question.

@GypsySpellweaver pretty localized, though
12
A: Are diagnostics/troubleshooting issues on-topic and not too localized?

Oliver SalzburgTroubleshooting questions are bad! We are a Question & Answer site, not a forum. You mentioned becoming a clone of Wikipedia, which is basically exactly what we should be. (Obviously, we don't want to be an exact clone, but we want to be an encyclopedia of problems and solutions to these problem...

@allquixotic alright! ISP is Comcast and they support IPv6 in my area. The modem/router combo they make me use works just fine with IPv6 and anything connected directly to it can communicate over IPv6 just fine (gets a 20/20 on test-ipv6.com). But I don't want to use their router. I'm trying to get my dd-wrt router to work with it.

if he can make the question generic and have an answer that covers many/most cases where IPv6 isn't working (honestly, that'd be really hard to do unless you're an extremely talented networking guru) it would be ok on the site

@allquixotic I've been thinking about that, yeah. I've gotten to the point where radvd on the dd-wrt router is forwarding the DHCP6 information and hosts connected to the router get an IPv6 address within my assigned /64 but they cannot connect to anything over IPv6.
I'm thinking I may be lacking a route somewhere. Either from the hosts to the gateway or the router to the modem/router combo.
I'll start writing a question. Spitting all that out helped.

are you using NAT6? in other words, does each device under your router get its own public IPv6 address, or is there one public IPv6 address that they all share?

9:50 PM
@allquixotic Pretty sure I'm not using NAT6. According to the comcast modem I have a delegated prefix of 2601:601:XXXX:XXXX::/64
and DHCP6 is assigning address from 2601:601:XXXX:XXXX::0001 to 2601:601:XXXX:XXXX::fffe

@Seth my first kneejerk reaction is that your dd-wrt firmware might be incomplete or buggy; unless you have one of the few extremely fully-functional dd-wrt firmwares, most of them have a significant list of unimplemented or broken features

@allquixotic I'll pull up its page. just a sec

from using dd-wrt in the past, it's generally only reliable for very simple scenarios like IPv4 switching over ethernet, and wifi with WPA2

@allquixotic here's the router: dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR3800
Netgear says the router supports IPv6 and its dd-wrt configuration page has an IPv6 section.

9:59 PM
@Seth heh, a winder.. I have that exact (?) model

@allquixotic Oh really? Do you happen to have IPv6 setup too?
