ugh, even with a DllMap, Mono isn't successfully finding my ffmpeg dylibs (OS X Mach-O equivalent of DLLs)

@Burgi hehe It's alright
I hope you get someone good

we probably won't move hosts
too much faff
its not a huge increase

I regretted a single last year purchase and just had to send an email to FIVE different companies regarding a refund. Let's see how it goes.

ugh
ok so working with devout jewish freelance clients is tricky

@Burgi Hmm i can imagine
no work on a sunday?

6:45 PM
the only day i can really go see them is saturday...

no gambling or something?

One for my credit card company, one for paypal, one for the tech deals site I purchased it from, one for the parent company of that site, and finally one for the product company itself.

Of all of those, it's the one we used to hate the most who'll pay up
(credit card) if it's anything like over here

@Burgi No wonder you can't see them, they're dev-out...
That was awful. One sec while I kill myself.

@djsmiley2k jewish people don't work on the sabbath (saturday)

6:47 PM
ah sry

they want to meet on sunday evening...

yeah

I wonder what skills I could sell free lance
who wants a guy who runs pc's smoothly

tech support

6:48 PM
yeah but who's gonna hire me? XD

its surprisingly profitable to home users

If I'm good - I could be awesome
like monitoring, pre-empitive backups for people, replace hardware within hours instead of days, apply patches, etc

you need a car and a toolbox

I got the car :D

@Burgi Say what? Tech support for home users is profitable in the UK?

6:49 PM
I do have a tool box but it's at home
@ThatBrazilianGuy appently
the problem is friends and family
lol

Here people be like "I'll pay you 10 bucks to 'format my windows' ". My counsin's nephew does it for 5.

@ThatBrazilianGuy yeah £30/hr

Also will need windows iso's of every version

i charge companies £50/hr for tech support

I used to do it for 10% min wage per hour as a freelancer. But that was ages ago.
Back in 2012 the market was already completely ruined by the "nephews".
Besides, less and less people have desktop computers at home.

6:51 PM
what minimum wage in brazil? 3 bananas and a weird cocktail?

@Burgi At least we have the teeth to eat the bananas.

so do we
its america where you have to PAY for healthcare where the teeth are bad

Healthcare here is free and you only have to wait a few years or so for treatment of something that kills you in a few months

sounds about right
i just found @JourneymanGeek's tumblr
or maybe its @Dog's
last one i promise

1 hour later…
8:20 PM
urgh, florida man strikes again

hmm
Also I'm sorry to hear abot your cat @BenN :(

@JourneymanGeek

@MichaelHampton I think he's asleep for a few more hours

@BenN I wouldn't be up at 3:30 in the morning either if I were him. But he'll see it eventually.

9:31 PM
@MichaelHampton: Yeah bummer, i know many people that ordered many of those guys for 20$
And their orders were cancelled too.

I have a genuine query regarding something important things related to my life.
Anybody around?

!!tell 34604964 meta

@AnimeshAshish Yes. Fire away.

@AnimeshAshish Please don't ask to ask; if you simply ask your actual question, we will help you if we know the answer or can help you find it. This is much faster and simpler than asking if it's OK to ask. As a rule, it is always OK to ask in this channel. Please go ahead.

It's my first time and a newbie. So, yeah I am sorry for the mistakes I make.
What is SQL Injection, anybody?

9:42 PM
@AnimeshAshish do you really have to ask that here instead of trying a google search first?
that's one of the most basic topics in information security; I'd be astounded if you couldn't find several explanations of it, videos, etc.

I have been studying about it since an hour. I have had my side of research. Is it possible to get an access to website's database with SQL injection?

@AnimeshAshish that's kind of the point, yes. IF a website is vulnerable to SQL injection, and you successfully pull it off, then it enables you to either read, write, or both, some information from the database that the developer didn't intend you to be able to do
I'm impressed that you didn't glean that basic information from studying it for a whole hour

Was that sarcasm?

it was; sorry... I shouldn't do that lol

I'm an undergrad. Just someone curious who likes to explore stuff. I keep studying about programs but haven't really started programming yet. If there could be any help such as an "initiation" towards my programming life. I'd be highly obliged.
Any book/course at lynda/following someone/lectures on youtube may help.

9:48 PM
@AnimeshAshish for the topic of SQL injection, as well as basically any other information security topic, I'd recommend OWASP's wiki: owasp.org/index.php/SQL_Injection
as for a more general way to get a leg up on coding, I'll give you the same advice I give every new programmer; be interested. If you're not inherently interested in the topic enough to be self-motivated and (1) find a problem you think you can solve; (2) learn how to solve it; and (3) solve it, then you're probably not going to be a successful programmer.
You should always be observant whenever you're using a computing system of any kind
If you notice something deficient, not working properly, or missing features, take note of them
Especially if you're working with open source software
Then, consider in your head how difficult you estimate it might be to fix the problem or add that feature
If it sounds like something that you might be able to attempt, then try it; just do it
I left out an important word that an influential German programmer who works for Red Hat used when he "encouraged" me many years ago ;-) he said, "just fucking do it" (JFDI) - his acronym :)

Can you be more specific on the "courses" that I should take so as to learn programming to a higher level first?
I currently know working in JAVA. How can I connect SQL with JAVA. That's it. Is that sufficient to start? And If it is. WHere from?

@AnimeshAshish Don't worry about what you know; you'll learn everything you need to learn along the way to solving a problem
Classes are there to spew general information to you in the hopes that it will be useful; most of it won't be useful, that is a fact
But you will learn a lot, and be a more useful programmer in practice, if you attempt to solve problems, and allow the problem to dictate what you learn
For example, here is a story about my most recent project
I play Star Wars: The Old Republic, a game, with other people. Multiplayer. A friend who plays that game is deaf. But everyone talks to each other using TeamSpeak. She felt kind of "left out", unable to participate in the TeamSpeak voice chat, because she can't hear. So I decided for myself that I would attempt to write a plugin for TeamSpeak to recognize spoken words and translate it into text for her to read.
I don't have to do it; and I may never fully succeed at my goal; but I started an open source project on GitHub and started learning. I had to brush up on my C++, learn a bunch of new libraries and APIs, and enlist help from Root Access folks and Stack Overflow. But I've learned a whole lot. And in the end, I may be able to help someone who's deaf :)
Look for opportunities like that in your own life as you use the computer (or even your phone or tablet), and seize them by trying to "fill those gaps".
Your motivation to help someone or develop something useful will drive you forward, and you'll learn a lot.

Let me be more precise on my question. The way you helped her out. By writing a plugin and other "cool stuff" that followed, I want you to tell me that how did you "learn" to write a plugin in the first place? Was it a course that you took? ANy boook that you read?

@AnimeshAshish No, definitely not a course or a book. That's not how I learn to do things, and I don't think it's a very good approach to learning in general. I use logic to reason things out. For example, when I first started that project, I didn't even know whether TeamSpeak had the ability to support plugins. I had to google "teamspeak plugin API", and then found that there was a plugin API.
Then I was like, "Hmm, OK, so what language would I need to use for the plugin?" and it turns out that C++ is the best language (C# is also good, in this case) for writing TeamSpeak plugins. So I had to pick my language, and then get started on the project setup.

It's 3:30am in the morning here and I am inspired, curious enough to be gaining all that you seem to impart to me. I hope I'm not disrupting your busy, productive schedule in any manner?

10:01 PM
All you have to do is be able to identify what's the next step; what is the thing you don't currently know, that you need to know, to make progress?
Once you know what the next step is, you can go google, use Stack Overflow, etc. until you are able to resolve the question in your mind and keep going.
Learning to pick the right google terms to solve a problem is a very useful skill in itself, and one I think you should work on... I'm not sure if you can learn it any way besides experience though
where I work, my coworkers often come to me with problems, and I solve them by googling... so you could say that part of my job is to be a "professional Googler" ;-)

With all due respect, you happen to ignite my inner being. I don't really have anything but a "thanks a ton. mate" statement which I'd love to print inifinte times in for loop for you in JAVA ;)
You work in an IT company I'm sure?

@AnimeshAshish yeah I do, with a lot of Indians ;p

So, you're an Indian too?

nope ;p

Tell me the name, please :3

10:05 PM
my coworkers are Indians who've emigrated to the US

Name of your company :3

Eh, it's probably somewhere in the backlog of chat over the years I've been here, but I'm not too enthusiastic to repeat it as it's potentially personally identifying info

In short, You dont wanna and you aren't going to. I understand :)
The way you talked about being <B>driven<b>
I am sorry I dont know how to make it bold :/
I wanted to share an experience of mine.

Here's the thing, though: there are a lot of people (from every culture, especially Americans, lol) who go into programming for the wrong reason: "I want to make money". That's not a good enough reason. You can appreciate the money, while also being innately driven to learn and make useful programs.
To bold something in chat use **bold** like that

I just bought a MI Band 2. dksf
oh thanks, and how did you know that?
Wait, let me tell on of my experience.

10:09 PM
well I discovered it accidentally when I first joined chat, because I often write plain text using *asterisks* for emphasis

@allquixotic To me, it's about the craft of programming.

once I discovered it by accident, I googled it and found a meta.stackexchange.com post about chat markup

However, I'm more into the IT/sysadmin/hardware side of things.

@bwDraco Elaborate? I don't think I actually understand what you mean, but am interested to hear you articulate it
(even if it's not about coding but more about sysadmin whatevers)

@allquixotic I see programming as a fine craft. A well-written program is like a piece of functional art.

10:11 PM
oh, yeah :P true... there can be some aesthetic appreciation of well-written code, elegant algorithms, etc.
that's not really what drives it for me, but I appreciate it when I see it
for me it's always about what am I getting done?
although, I am often very appreciative of simply learning things, along the path towards getting something done
Problem as impetus --> struggle, bang head against wall, learn stuff --> figure it out, solve problem, rejoice

I recently bought an Mi Band 2. I was curious enough to explore the abilities it could reach. So I installed an app. It was named "mi Band 2 func button" which could link my mi band to Tasker (an app which could do wondrous stuff). So, I used to turn flashligh on with double taps on my MI band. But, the problem arises when the app had 100 tap limit for the day. ANd I had to buy it to get id of it. I couldnt understand what to do now.
Took me quite long to type it.

@AnimeshAshish oh, that's interesting :)
well, you know, you could probably write something similar to Tasker (on Android, right?) to do the same function for free :)

It wasn't Tasker, It was Mi band func button which linked Mi band's taps to tasker.

oh, I see, so the Mi band app is limited to 100 taps?

And I dont think tasker would be able to receive the "taps"
The "mi band func button" app.

Its made by smeone on playstore

That ^^ ?
> FULL version disables the limit on the number of taps.

Yes! Exactly!

Well, I've got stuff to do. See you in a bit.

But I dont have the full version. So I had to give up :(
What should I have done?
And one more thing

10:17 PM
@AnimeshAshish I googled "open source mi band" and found this: github.com/Freeyourgadget/Gadgetbridge
> Gadgetbridge is an Android (4.4+) application which will allow you to use your Pebble or Mi Band without the vendor's closed source application

I couldn't understand a thing in the link you've sent me.
WHat does "branch" mean?
It's written Branch: master

@AnimeshAshish oh, that's a Git branch; don't worry about the folders of source code right now... when you first visit a GitHub page like that, scroll down and read the documentation that appears beneath it :)
look for the file displaying "README.md" and it has a bunch of text and big font, etc

Should I install this "gadgetbridge" in my android phone?
I downloaded it in zip file, there is no .apk file there to install it in my smartphone.

you could definitely try it; it's free :)
@AnimeshAshish the source code won't have the compiled apk, but according to the readme, you can download the release version (APK) from F-Droid: f-droid.org/repository/browse/…
F-Droid is a third-party free software app store. It's like the Google Play Store, but everything in there is open source

You're an amazing man. I mean. If you were beside me, I'd be kissing your feet.
Is F-droid better than play store?

10:25 PM
@AnimeshAshish That depends. Firstly, if you have money to spend, and don't care about the programs you run being proprietary (closed source), it's fine to use the Play Store, but be prepared that many app developers will ask you to pay to "unlock" all the features.
But there are many high-quality Android apps that are open source, and only some of those open source apps are in the Play Store.
F-Droid is usually used by developers who are idealistically proponents of open source or free software.

Yes, I have experienced that a lot. Whenever I encounter an app/game that is paid or something I go for cracked/mod apk. But in this Mi band func button thingy, I wasnt able to find it (full version)
I must say, you have a commendable amount of patience to talk to a newbie like me who is constantly pestering you with his low IQ, haha

Ethically, I'd advise against downloading "cracked" APKs. If you yourself can mod the APK to remove the restrictions, that's fine, as far as I'm concerned; you're doing it for learning purposes. But to download someone else's crack is both dangerous and unethical.
If you're going to be in the software industry, it's important to respect other software developers and their intellectual property, by not doing things that they'd be unhappy about. Respect their licenses, and don't "crack" software.

I have zero idea as to how to crack it/mod it. Are there any softwares with which I can crack/mod it?

@AnimeshAshish Nothing that'll just do it with a push-button, no. You'd have to learn about the internal structure of the APK, probably reverse engineer some Java bytecode, etc.
It's a rather advanced thing to crack an APK; some of them can be done fairly easily but it depends on how it was developed

And how do we do that? I have heard that there is a software from google that can show me the apk's coding. I dont remember the name

10:29 PM
There's no harm in learning how to do that, but I'd just say, try to play by the rules, and respect other software developers
Do with someone else's software, what you would want someone else to do with software you worked very hard on.

There are many websites that allow users to download the cracked/modded apks. Are they al unethical?

@AnimeshAshish Yes. Developers who release closed-source software are making a deliberate choice. To crack their software goes against their wishes, and is potentially illegal, depending on where you live, where the developer lives, and what you do.
Not only that, but cracked software has a very high chance of having viruses, malware and spyware embedded in it, by the people who cracked it.
Just think: if someone is smart enough to crack an APK, they're certainly smart enough to put their own custom code in that APK that is intended to harm you

There was this game called Mini Militia. Everbody in my friend's group played it. But one fine day a boy had a modded Mini Militia. He was able to choose the battlegrounds, unlimited ammo and stuff. Every body took that app from him. God, I should be knowing this then.

Bob
@allquixotic Unfortunately, he does say somewhere that DmoEffects does not work outside Windows :\
Maybe in the future, but not right now.

@Bob right, but this is using CSCore.Ffmpeg, which implements the IWaveSource interface just like your RawDataReader, and uses libswresample from ffmpeg in the backend to do the same thing
The comments I made on that issue are not related to any Win32-specific code

Bob
10:33 PM
@allquixotic Wait. It does? o.O

it's just a bug in that incomplete code
@Bob look at the source of FfmpegDecoder.

Bob
I took a quick look through the Ffmpeg code, and I thought it was decoder-only
@allquixotic afaict, yes it's an IWaveSource, but the resample command applies a DMO function to the stream; it's not part of the source.

huh, okay. well, I would've known that if I could get past the part that tries to create an avformat context with a file called "DUMMY-FILENAME" :P

@allquixotic : Are we taling?
*talking?
@all

@AnimeshAshish of course, I'm just having another simultaneous conversation
that's common in chat here, where many different threads of conversation will go on at the same time

10:41 PM
@allquixotic : It's 4 am here. Maybe I should get some sleep. I'd look forward to get help from you in future :)

@AnimeshAshish hang out here then, and don't be afraid to ask the chat in general, aside from just me
Bob and JourneymanGeek and DavidPostill and bwDraco, etc are good to learn from also

o/ :)

also HackToHell and Rahul2001 are from your country I believe

@allquixotic : Thank you, sir :) . I am highly obliged. TO be honest, This was the most productive hour of my life to learn how to actually "ignite" that spark in me.

@AnimeshAshish good, because there are too many people in the software profession that don't have that, even with Master's degrees in Computer Science and a professional job
I think you can go a lot further with strong motivation than with a piece of paper that says "I am a Master of Computer Science"

10:46 PM
@allquixotic : Just one more thing, I am feeling a bit curious about what Bob was talking about? If you have the time to.. you know explain it :3

@AnimeshAshish oh, he belatedly replied to me about a conversation we were having earlier, about the capabilities of the CSCore library and whether it will work outside of Windows (e.g. on a Mac or Linux), and as usual he's correct and I'm wrong. I thought it could do what I want on Mac/Linux but it can't (yet?)

I didn't even knew about CSCore until now.

I started writing kynnaugh-cc in C++, a while back, and simultaneously inspired Bob to work on kynnaugh-cs in C# as a "friendly competition" to see who could make the better / more portable version of it :P
the general idea of the project is to implement that TeamSpeak plugin for speech to text, like I mentioned earlier
we're both learning a lot as we go about the development process :)

github is an amazing place, I see.

code sharing sites in general are amazing, yes, but github is the most popular

10:50 PM
CSCore isn't available for android :#

@AnimeshAshish that's a work in progress, actually -- the developers of CSCore have started to support it on Linux, and once it runs on Linux, it should be pretty easy to run it on Android too
it's not done but they're actively working on it, as far as I can tell

Do you know any developers of CSCore?
Had a talk like "this" with anybody?

@AnimeshAshish not personally, no, but I know their github names and I've read comments from them in the issues
@AnimeshAshish well, kind of... I've always been innately inspired, but I got inspired by people a very long time ago... so long ago, in fact, that you might have been a child, or not even born... I'm pretty old

DO all developers talk "this" way on chat on stackexchange only? ANy other websites?

(though DavidPostill would laugh at my age and call me young)

10:53 PM
I am just 18

@AnimeshAshish this sort of developer talk originated on the Internet on mailing lists, like usenet; it's also very popular on IRC. But the more "modern" services use chat services such as Slack and Gitter.im
usenet was a 90s thing. IRC is still used, but less popular now than it used to be. Slack and Gitter.im have only existed for a few years.

Do you watch any Series? I saw Mr. Robot .
They open command prompt (MSDOS) like looking software

I haven't seen that one but I intend to watch it eventually (I have a long list of television I don't have time to watch)

to communicate
Will I be able to retrieve all that we talked in future?
Like, ALl that we talked right now, can I refer to it if I need to in future

I need to go home; it's 6pm / 18:00 here and I have to leave work, go shopping, etc. I'll see you around :) Good luck with your career. / And yes, you'll be able to view the chat backlog forever. Stack Exchange does not delete the chat (unless it's flagged as spam/abuse and deleted)
you can always search the chat or scroll up and view older chat

10:58 PM
Thanks, have a nice productive evening.

Will try. I'll be back in a few hours.

I math.stackexchange chat, people are using mathematical operators in a ver "non understandable" way. What is it?

why is there a dollar sign at the beginning and at the end?

Ah, those should render as easy-to-read mathematical expressions
You need to install the thing that parses the $-enclosed codes into pretty math

@allquixotic ROTFLMAO

@BenN : THank you, sir.
Aren't we able to just upload images for some questions if we need to?

11:14 PM
Yes, there's a button on the toolbar of the textbox that lets you upload or paste an image
In chat, I think it has a reputation threshold before the upload button appears

@BenN : Can you help me to increase my reputation? Just a thought. ;)

11:31 PM
@AnimeshAshish it's easy. Post good answers :p

A: What's the feeling of having more than 10k points of rep?

Journeyman GeekI remember my reaction on Superuser when I hit 10K... Someone else was like "Congratulations" and I was all "Wait, WHAT?". Then I hit 20K and realised there were no more worlds to conquer no more privileges to be gained ... I'm close to 50K now. Rep is really just a number, and it has not real...

This is what I do
@MichaelHampton alas. Those 20 dollar drives did seem too good to be true.

Thank you, everybody. It's indeed a pleasure having such a strong people having my back :)
Are there any other services of stackexchange that I must know? Like 'chat' services which I found.

Errrr
SO has documentation, and there's a jobs site
There used to be per site blogs but no more
Q&A is where it's at though
