@Bob I don't think any BT cans support it :/

@allquixotic ...then that'd be a BT problem, no?
there's one thing wired does well, though probably not all that useful :P

@Bob sure. they need to add duplex A2DP + mic as a profile

12:59 AM
Hi.

Hi!

I see we had an unhappy user earlier. I've skimmed through the transcript but looked like you chaps handled it well.

allquixotic and Burgi handled it like professionals
I was mostly just watching, since anything from me probably would have made things worse

Hmmph.

1:07 AM
@HackToHell that's what old IBM would have done

@BenN Was I too tough on him then?

Oh, I only left you out because you came in later and I wasn't watching too closely at that point. No slight against you :)
And TBG was there too

@DavidPostill perfect tbh
he was specifically trying to pick a fight with me and ben

@JourneymanGeek Thx

and it was handled calmly, and more importantly with style
@allquixotic funny thing is I don't actually need/want audio jacks for music.
that said, I still think a screw on 3.5mm inch jack to USB C device (like the screw on 3.5mm to 1/4 inch connector) would be awesome.

2:04 AM
What happened? I might be able to learn a bit of a lesson...

lol
@bwDraco read the transcript

I was expecting a link to a specific message...

I'm trying to fast-track learning key soft skills and might ask for some explanation behind the actions taken so I know what to do.

One does not rush these things
besides, you need to learn patience ;)

2:07 AM
It's okay.

I would... amusingly enough
3 hours ago, by allquixotic
@Bob read the star wall and the scrollback
Start here. Then work backwards. Then work forwards
and don't ping the people involved

I'm quite literally hungry for every opportunity to learn.
Okay, give me a moment...
(on mobile and tied up right now so not quite ready to study this)

lol
You asked ;p

I'll look at it in a moment.
So, what I'm going to do is roleplay and state what I would have done. I'd like to have any mistakes in this proposed course of action pointed out so I'm better prepared to handle similar situations in the future.
I will discuss this in the mod room so it doesn't impact main chat.

There's nothing to discuss
its handled

2:15 AM
That's not the issue. I just want to seize the chance to learn a lesson.

And the lesson is "its handled, there's no point digging it up"

imagine if the rest of life was like that.
Hey what happened here? Just hop back in time 20 minutes and watch it live.
I suspect that nobody would get anything done ever if that was possible.
much like trying to re-hash it over in a courtroom for ages

The trick to effective chat moderation is stopping trouble before it starts
not raking it back over once its done

I should have twitch streamed it

2:18 AM
It would have been part of a vob

Twitch streaming chat...

And you could have watched it prerecorded

yer monsterocity.

Hows it going my buddy ol @JourneymanGeek
;)

Bob
2:20 AM
JOptionPanes are weird

lol
There's some chat related words from above tm

300 new videos are uploaded to youtube for each Minute , so while your watching one video, 300 more popped up you missed.

But its entirely irrelevant to us ;p

Dog
@Leathe It is quite literally a tsunami, with tsunamis being a "feature" of the new expansion...
I just find it ironic how being flooded by a tsunami is being juxtaposed by "needs more water"

I'm not going to bother to pin this, cause I will personally box the ears bit the ankles of anyone who is not nice but... meta.stackexchange.com/questions/289398/…

Dog
2:22 AM
@Bob Desktop replacement
Instead of 1) Gaming desktop, 2) Gaming laptop which will be plugged in most of the time anyway and 3) A convertible/tablet, I might as well just get the gaming laptop that substitutes as a desktop

nice analytics

Dog
Wait no that was another laptop

that was that acer thing

Dog
@Bob My current 13" laptop with an overheating dual-core CPU and no GPU is at least 3cm thick and over 2.2KG

For me, I think I need to not be so aggressive. I need to be gentle.

Dog
2:24 AM
Granted, ten hours battery life even on a 37w CPU

@JourneymanGeek: heres my twitter scraping analysis that I did on donald trump and hillary on the last month before the election. This is retweets and favorite's combined: pbs.twimg.com/media/Cv87LurWYAEVV_6.jpg
blue = trump / red is hillary

Dog
@Bob I thought you wanted a desktop not a laptop

@WHATEVERDave I agressively block political memes from social networking ;p

The hard part about soft skills is that it can only be properly learned live. I guess I need to go out more...

Bob
@Dog Yea, this year is all about the desktop.
Laptop... maybe in a year or two.

2:25 AM
Tweet Count: (469 Donald, 778 Hillary), 8700851 retweets, 20484050 favorites in grand total in the course of one month. That's a good participation rate

@bwDraco its worth trying to see the big picture here.

Dog
@djsmiley2k What's a lyre and why am I one

I should have made bets online, I would have won BIG

Dog
@Bob Ironically this year is the year there's sod all new to buy in the desktop market (at least as far as Intel is concerned)

Dog
2:26 AM
Zen might change that... a lot

From a mod perspective, I 1) want things to be handled quickly and then dropped

2) do as little as possible personally

Bob
@Dog Yea... I chose a kinda bad time.
But I was originally planning with Skylake in mind, so... good enough? :P
Anyway, it's really more about the motherboard and peripherals than the CPU itself.

Dog
@Bob And how can I be a compulsive... whatever that is

2:28 AM
Yeah, I try to avoid politics as much as possible. Its just interesting to scrape data

Dog
@Bob I think I'm just gonna stick with Skylake

And learn from it.

Dog
Dell has something like $500 off the Skylake Alienware I wanted now it's on clearance... but US only

Dog
Funny enough my current laptop which has "died" twice in the last two years, hence pushing me into "needing" a replacement, manages to just keep chugging along...
Even the sporadic untraceable random crashes have all but disappeared

2:30 AM
kinda like the DOID?

@qasdf, I stand by my word and will no longer respond to your troll bait. — bwDraco 1 min ago
@qasdfdsaq: can you not nitpick on my answers only? The exact same complaint applies to DavidPostill's answer. — bwDraco Jan 1 at 19:17
(the latter comment has 13 upvotes)

@bwDraco what brought that on?

An earlier nitpick on my answer.

how's that constructive?

The question does not say "all optical media" anywhere, it specifically refers to CDs and DVDs. — qasdfdsaq Jan 1 at 19:14

Dog
2:31 AM
Someone was spamming bad answers in here and I posted a comment on them.

Anyone has a right to comment. And for those comments to be arbitrarily and finally be nuked

I got a "No..." comment with no further explanation.

and the best way to deal with 'negative' comments is with facts, not "don't thread on me bro!"

Bob
s/thread/tread/

I would rather have those comments deleted.
Thanks.

2:33 AM
>_>

Dog
Troll bait only works on trolls funny enough

eh. knock it off you two.

Dog
Best way to avoid people criticizing your false accusations against others is to not make false accusations against others in the first place.

@Dog Drop it please.

Dog
I made one totally factual comment, what is there to drop?

2:36 AM
I'll deal with the comments, but this is clearly not being constructive

I am not responding further.

Dog
Telling the OP his question is wrong to cover up and deny the fact your answer is wrong is not constructive. Whinging at people who point that out to you isn't being constructive either

Actually saying a question is wrong is a perfectly fine way to answer a question. Here's the thing. I felt draco calling you out this way was wrong. you two do not interact well with each other.
so, I'm going 'this could be a problem' before it is. And I strongly suggest you listen, and move on to another topic.

Dog
It's not a perfectly fine way to answer a question that was not asked by answering a different question and tell the OP he should have asked what you wanted him to ask instead of what the OP actually wanted to know

I just feel I'm getting exploited.

2:40 AM
@Dog you're argueing for the sake of argueing.

Dog
It's like Q: "What's the best AMD processor"
A: "You wrongly assume AMD processors are good for gaming. The best AMD processor for gaming is an Intel i7"
@JourneymanGeek I'm arguing because I'm a cat and you're a dog.

(and note, I was telling draco your comments were valid, and I'd take a look)

Dog
We're just incompatible mkay
My comments were so valid you chose to delete them
Yeah that makes sense

@Dog its not constructive. I'm also kinda the guy who has to deal with the fallout, and I'm saying, move on.

I recognize that Dog/qasdf had a vaild issue and already addressed it in an edit. I would rather not argue this.

Dog
2:41 AM
Meanwhile, I'm off to dream about Alienware laptops with AMD processors.

good idea.

Hes really typing not saying, just wanted to type that out.

Let's move on.

@bwDraco you are. Its handled. You move on too.
@Dog heh. Does dell ever?

Dog
!!s/typing/barking/

2:42 AM
@Dog Hes really barking not saying, just wanted to type that out. (source)

Dog

Thank you, @JourneymanGeek.

I love you all.

Dog

Bob

lol

Dog
What the feck was Google thinking

@Dog when the robot IOT revolution comes...

Dog
2:46 AM
Oh come on

...but I'm not going to abuse the chatbot.

Dog
You've got to be kidding me
That's three horses and some geese

That's an odd looking dog fox

Dog
Finally
Now we can see what Bob looks like
Clearly he chose the name "Bob" to sound as innocuous as possible yet being impossible to Google

Bob

2:49 AM
Maybe the horse is named bob and the other one is named fox.

@Dog that is bob, weave , and duck , you just have to understand (the stupidity of) the machine

Dog
I feel sleepy
I gave myself some date rape drugs

@Dog you do realise that means your about to f--- yourself

2:53 AM
For whatever reason, I want to use the bot to uncensor minced oaths like "feck" but I'm on the fence :P

Dog
Sadly no-one seems to want to date rape me but no matter, I'll wake up with no recollection anyway so I won't know that

lol

@bwDraco I will totally ban you from using the chat bot if you did
@Dog that's dark and unfunny.

I know not to :p

ehh
this is going to be one of those days...
@WHATEVERDave eh. That's probably not the sorta thing to link here
piracy and all that ;p

2:56 AM
@WHATEVERDave Anyone can see edit history of a non-deleted message ;)

darnit

Nov 4 '16 at 2:57, by bwDraco
Protip: Don't use the chatbot to generate rude or offensive messages.
:P

@BenN and any mod or RO can see what a deleted message is ;p

Yep

Much to learn. I still need to learn to watch what I'm writing because I might offend others unexpectedly.

3:00 AM
Personally on public chat, I prefer erring on the side of caution
talking about games is cool
linking places like that, somewhat less so

Lesson learned.
My apologies to anyone offended.

@bwDraco the train has left the station, the horse has bolted from the stable. The garage is empty....
Keep it up... and I'll start singing.
(protip. Unlike huskies, wauzers are terrible singers)

...and I am stepping out. I am not going to restart the incident.

One of my cats froze today :(
2

froze how? 0_0

3:05 AM
They're outside cats and it's 7 F here
They have warm places to be, but this one apparently didn't figure it out tonight

ow
is she ok?

Yikes.

No, she's frozen solid

... shit

lol

Bob
3:08 AM
o.O

@BenN is she.. dead?

Yes

(If so, my condolences)

ahh it is a cat trick when you cant get in the house, you freeze yourself solid, then thrust yourself at the windows , untill the human notices and lets you in.

It's difficult to be alive when frozen solid

3:08 AM
ugh
@Psycogeek un-funny.

Alas, it happens to farm animals sometimes

@BenN wasn't sure if it was metaphorical.

A chicken froze a few weeks ago, I hoped the cats would be smarter

oh damnit.
@bwDraco I was intentionally not engaging the guy in ask a superuser moderator.

...and I am going out for a walk. What I'm doing is counterproductive and actively harmful.

3:11 AM
Try not to freeze solid

@bwDraco quite literally, don't put anything there he can respond to

I wasn't trying to feed the troll. I was writing a bit of a note to self.

Not there.

...hmm. Shall we lock the room?

No
Just cause you can't leave well enough alone dosen't mean the room needs to be locked. Other users may wish to use it.

3:17 AM
Ah well.

cnn.com/2017/01/05/health/amazon-alexa-dollhouse-trnd/… Step away from the talking computer. "Brooke asked Alexa to "order me a dollhouse and cookies," and that's just what Alexa did. A KidKraft Sparkle Mansion dollhouse, which costs about $170, and a tin of Royal Dansk sugar cookies soon arrived."

So, a final summary of the lessons learned today:
1) I need to be careful about what I write. At times, I may fail to realize that what I write is not constructive or is rude or offensive.
2) I need to not feed trolls. Acknowledging the troll in any way, even indirectly, will make the problem worse.
3) I need to learn to let go, not dig up past incidents or discuss them longer than necessary.
4) When handling people problems, I need to make sure that what I do effectively solves the problem in the least drastic manner possible without escalating the issue. Sometimes, that means doing nothin
Let's take this in a positive light and move on.

@bwDraco 2 more observations.

I sure hope AMD has some genuinely competitive products coming out over the next few months...

1) You use I too much. The world dosen't revolve around you. You can't fix everything.
2) Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing at all
You need to actually act depending on someone's motivations

3:31 AM
Hopefully, I will be able to go out and socialize when my toe gets better so I can practice soft skills. It's about time.
This is getting a bit out of hand.

Q: Why does Windows think that my wireless keyboard is a toaster?

ydaetskcoRI've inherited an old PC from my girlfriend's dad and when setting up the printer I got a bit of a surprise: Two questions spring to mind here: Why does Windows think my wireless keyboard is a toaster? Why does Windows even have an icon for a toaster in the devices menu?

lol
Min-Liang Tan must be relieved
(CEO of razer. There's a running joke/campaign for a chroma enabled toaster after an april fools day post about it)
Their two new CES concepts seem interesting

> peak stupid

4:03 AM
ooh
reversal badge on meta.se

And so the journey continues...
AARGH, Google Maps is constantly getting my location wrong! I'm at home, not at the local train station or the park!

(posted without context)

4:32 AM
...and as the launch of AMD Ryzen approaches, the demo at CES is showing a chip running at 3.6-4.0 GHz.
Well, more like 3.6-3.9 GHz but they're hitting 4.0 with their latest stepping.
AMD's engineers are hard at work putting the finishing touches on the Zen architecture. Coupled to ongoing process improvements (it's still rather early days for GlobalFoundries 14nm), it definitely looks like has a competitive part on their hands.
The last several benchmarks and demos we looked at were with slower parts. The New Horizon demo was run at 3.4 GHz with boost disabled, while Canard PC's benchmarks had an engineering sample running at 3.15-3.5 GHz (notably managing to push a single core to 5 GHz on air).
Then again, Kaby Lake can be run at 5 GHz on air, no problem. Mind you, this is with a fully-enabled 4C/8T chip (read i7-7700K).
However, the clocks AMD are getting with an 8C/16T chip on a 95W TDP are pretty impressive.
Of course, we won't know for sure until benchmarks of production retail chips are released.

4:48 AM
yup
I do hope they're price competitive as well
(Also, I'm hoping puget does a review of them)

Puget Systems isn't normally a first-line reviewer for me because I see them as a system builder rather than as a reviewer.
I will probably add that to my list of tech sites to visit regularly, though.
...and that fancy copper sticker definitely helped.
(along with a more efficient chip, of course)

5:28 AM
@bwDraco precisely why they're a handy place for me to get information
a lot of their blog posts are very much on the practical/system builder side of things
and they do application specific reviews at times

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ^
contrast review sites that do it for the webpage views...
otoh, while their practical measurements and experience is good, I'd not necessarily trust them as much on the technical/theoretical side

@Bob always good to have different perspectives on things
hm
also, amusingly this period is when I read the least tech news

My first-line sites have always been AnandTech and Tom's Hardware.
@JourneymanGeek That might be one reason I sometimes make less than accurate claims...

I have those, techreport, verge, circuit breaker and I think wirecutter on my feeds

I see The Verge as less reliable. Too sensationalist for my taste.

5:41 AM
see differing perspectives
at the end of the day, the news is only what you make of it

The Wirecutter (run by The New York Times) is generally pretty good, though.

Wirecutter's a different niche tho
Its 'I want to buy a thing. What's my options'

(more mobile-focused)

At the end of the day though

Bob
@JourneymanGeek this period?

5:42 AM
I really need to read more diverse sources.

what I really need is data to (buy|do)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek one of these days I'll find a good way to consume feeds :\
used to use thunderbird but it's ... not great
still good for emails, just not feeds

I don't do RSS.

Bob
hm, maybe I can DIY a reader :D

lol
@Bob for god's sake, make a 2 pane one that runs in windows and syncs with ttrss
;p

5:43 AM
It's too lean for my taste.

Bob
@bwDraco s/sensationalist/written by randoms/
iirc verge allows 'blog posts' by... just about anyone now
@JourneymanGeek what's a ttrss

That's the thing though
I don't read it all
@Bob self hosted web client for RSS
has a mobile application

Bob
@JourneymanGeek and how does one sync with it? O_O

I run an instance

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I mean, if you can help me set up an instance... I can do the whole Windows program bit :P

Bob
apparently I know how to do Win10 toasts now too :D

@Bob I can give you an account on my instance

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that bezel though :(
@JourneymanGeek only if you promise to be totally non-judging on the random crap I read :P
nah, I should probably figure out how to set up my own
*adds to todo list*

hey

Continuing from earlier...
6) I should read a more diverse range of news sources. Reading from a limited set of sources can lead to bias and a less-than-accurate understanding of the world. There have been a few (minor) incidents (both in chat and in real life) due to this.
7) More time needs to be spent in the outside world socializing with others. Soft skills can't be learned at home on my own time.

5:47 AM
@bwDraco its not a contest tho

I have a lenovo e41-80, running on Mint 18 with a Skylake chipset. I'm having problems with bluetooth occasionally not being detected/switching on post resume from sleep. How do I go about diagnosing this

@Sathya My first instinct with issues like this is dmesg and possible less /var/log/messages.
Other than that, I wouldn't be able to help you much.

Bob
Issues with Linux + laptop hardware are... fun.
@Sathya Maybe AU chatroom would know more?

@Sathya sounds like.. linux
hides

@JourneymanGeek I know.. sigh

Bob
5:51 AM
Mint was Ubuntu reskinned, right?

I have to restart the laptop to get BT working again

but yeah, what @bwDraco said makes sense
@Bob its a fork yes

@Bob I think it's more than a skin

Bob
that's the word I was looking for

dmesg has been not much help

5:52 AM
@Sathya I think you could try disabling and re-enabling the driver and/or restarting the relevant service instead

have tried that
modprobe bluetooth / service bluetooth stop/start

Bob
derivative. bleh. words.
or unix.se I suppose

> Questions not about Ubuntu but only Mint should not be asked here and will be closed as off-topic.
yeah nix.se it is..

Bob
note to self, don't leave teabag in for 5 hours

Yeah, that's U&L or superuser territory ;p

Bob
5:55 AM
@Sathya or repro on official ubuntu, but prolly not worth the trouble :P

I went with Mint because I had trouble getting Ubuntu running on Skylake.

though this was soon as 16.04 dropped ..

fedora!
Actually I can't remember what distro I tested on my newer laptop

I am actually running plasma 5.8.5 on this XD

5:57 AM
I mostly run fedora these days

Bob
@JourneymanGeek describe the two pane thing more? :P
you thinking something like outlook+preview?
