oh I still had the tab open...

AFAIK mythbuntu is of-topic askubuntu.com/q/814101/530811

Hmm, somebody got interested in my script for disabling super key in full screen. I hope I get 2 more upgoats, and then that's a "Nice Asnwer" badge \ o/

it's an official flavour @grooveplex afaik

nvm

@Serg just link it!

@Zanna True
I had to check

@Zanna recently it's been considered somewhat of a bad practice . . . I avoid posting my answes in chat too much :/

8:06 AM
and since everyone was away typing furiously, any help with this? I don't wanna tell them to just ignore it because I don't use Android Studio askubuntu.com/questions/814056/… (the problem drifted... or the OP asked an XY problem question)
@Serg If you just oneboxed all your answers without context, that might be a bit annoying... but really your answers are awesome and I wanna see them... does anyone here object????

Eh, sure . . . askubuntu.com/a/805833/295286 if you-know-who decides to nuke rep again, why not . . . i'm out of job , out of school . . .if i become out of rep, i can take it . . .

I kinda think this is inaccurate or misleading... actually blacklist has a specific meaning in Linux systems, as in blacklisting kernel modules in /etc/modprobe.d with .conf files askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/606128 advice?

@Zanna that user asked about bit version of the OS? uname command

oh I already upvoted that answer :)
indeed... there are many ways of finding that out

$ dpkg --print-architecture
amd64
That too

8:10 AM
that's easy peasy.... but if you look at the comments... now they are asking about a warning they are getting because Android Studio doesn't find Oracle JRE/JDK
which is far from the original problem
dpkg --print-architecture is nice and clear :)

I'm lonely

but @ƎpᴉʇʎXD they are all here

who's all here?

Us . . . the other users . . . aka your virtual friends

@Zanna only when it stop responding.
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD that's a good thing :)

8:13 AM
@Rinzwind 2 hours till you get half the bounty, because i don't think OP will award it on time

anyway they got more than enough help with the problem they asked about imo, but it's turning into a "please give me step by step solution to carry out long procedure that I do not understand at all and never mentioned in my original post"
where's this bounty eh?

I guess we all are somewhat lonely

I got one today! :D

@Anwar congratulations ^_^

@Zanna just politely tell them that it goes beyond what they originally asked. Our site does 1 question per post , and that's it

8:15 AM
@Serg thank you :) I wanted to do that, but I get sucked in sometimes

@Zanna this is the bounty question askubuntu.com/q/809925/295286 Basically OP wants what cannot be done

I like those answers that say 'it cannot be done'

lunch time. bbl

Some OPs can be a bit pushy and absolutely convinced that normal ubuntu behavior is a bug

8:18 AM
oh yeah I remember that one... love both answers

i think it's been asked too many times. need a better dup target askubuntu.com/questions/811636/…

Canonical has teamed up with embedded solutions giant Advantech to certify the company’s Internet of Things (IoT) gateways for Ubuntu Core.

The ‘strategic partnership’ means users of Advantech’s Intel x86-based gateways will have a certified and fully supported Ubuntu image, ready for production use.

The deal also nets users access to a number of services to fully manage their device’s security and software.

Oft-neglected in talk of smart refrigerators and network-controlled lightbulbs, Gateways are intrinsic to the ‘Internet of Things’. They act as the “middleman” in the Internet-of-Thi

9:30 AM
Here is an LOA which I can't flag due to the vote count.

user136984
That is actually a really annoying feature, I think they should at least allow higher rep users to flag things with vote counts in the positive.

user136984
Because idiots upvote the bloody stuff!

Downgoated and flagged for mod attention

user136984
Same here.

user136984
But why do people upvote these things? And if we know that some idiots do, then why do we prevent users from flagging these posts? I mean, I think at least users with a certain amount of rep should be able to do it... But so far such proposals have been rejected.

9:35 AM
@ParanoidPanda that post is old, probably upvoted by low-rep users who are not familiar with how this site works

user136984
I've even seen accepted answers which are LOA for god sake.

user136984
@Serg: Yes, but then surely we should allow higher rep users who know what they are doing to flag the darn things.

This probably would require network-wide feature request, and as we know - those don't always go through

@ParanoidPanda why can't you flag? i flagged it as NAA

@edwinksl i flagged it for mod attention, because author tries to answer, but it's link only answer and old, so commenting wont work, so we may need mod to nuke it from the orbit

9:43 AM
LOA isn't an answer though, so flag it as NAA?

@edwinksl well , low quality answer usually means that it tries to answer OP's question , but only provides general solution, not exact steps and link. At least that's how i view it

user136984
@edwinksl: There was a discussion on this a few days ago... Mods don't accept flags unless they are of the correct type and the majority of them seem to think that LOA = VLQ, so that's what I'm sticking with...

the "answer" is absolutely useless if i don't click on the link
a NAA in my book
OP didn't even bother summarizing something

GOODNIGHT

@ParanoidPanda Um, no? LOA = NAA. Have a look at my answer to BC's meta post
> If the answer contains no valuable information and, instead, only has a link pointing to where an answer can be found, then it is not actually an answer so you should flag as NaA.
11
A: How do I flag correctly?

terdonThe following are some guidelines for flagging on Ask Ubuntu. These guidelines are derived from existing policies set out in the help center, Ask Ubuntu Meta and Meta SE, and were further refined by a discussion between the current mods. First, a few general points about flagging: As a general...

If the answer contains nothing but a link to another webpage where the answer might be found, it isn't an answer.
I love that image.

user136984
10:00 AM
@terdon: Oh, well, now you're all confusing me! Some say one way, some say the other... :D

@ParanoidPanda That's not good. Who says link only should be VLQ?
Shog's answers, both on the question above and the linked one on MSE, also suggest NAA for link only.
In any case, it really isn't important. Worst comes to worst, you'll have a flag rejected. That really is no big deal.
Although we do appreciate users flagging correctly since it helps us to the job.

user136984
@terdon: Well, I just remember one of the sides in the argument with dino and Pilot6 was advocating for VLQ. I thought I remembered some mods going with that stance, but I don't remember too well now.

user136984
But I shall go with NaA from now on. :)

user136984
What would you say should be flagged with VLQ then?

@ParanoidPanda I really, really doubt any mod was advocating for VLQ. We don't tend to be too fond of that flag since it's to subjective.

10:05 AM
morning
is it primarily opinion based? askubuntu.com/questions/814019/…
I've flagged on as VLQ today. let me see the flag status

@ParanoidPanda Unmitigated crap. Things that can't even be edited into shape.
Basically, VLQ should be for things that, if you were able to, you would have deleted on sight

@terdon so , can that post be nuked ?

@Serg Which?

@terdon askubuntu.com/a/6024/295286 Link only , old post. I even flagged it for mod attention,explanation is in message

@Anwar I closed as "unclear" since the OP could fix it if they showed us their current partitions/available space, but opinion based also makes sense.
@Serg Yeah, converted to comment. That should have dismissed your flag as helpful.

10:13 AM
thanks. I think he was asking if a separate partition is needed for Ubuntu.

I hadn't seen the flag, there are 20 pending ones at the moment, it takes some time. . .
@Anwar Yeah, and if his free space is enough. We'll see if he edits it

OK, that works

Ok then

@terdon just added another one :P time to earn your paycheck

@edwinksl if only mods were payed per post they review

10:17 AM
I retracted before being disputed

@Serg that would be nice

gosh i wish i could convert my rep into money . . . i'd need some right about now

that could be a meta question
if you are willing to tank the downvotes :P

I wouldn't like being paid for what I do here.

@dino yeah outright payment is not good. but say you get a free tour of canonical's office in london as appreciation of your work; that would be nice

Q: What are ways to detect running under windows 10 emulation?

ddbugSince a binary built for Ubuntu may now run under the Win10 "Ubuntu subsystem" - how can it detect this? (besides of poking in obscure corners of sysfs, /dev and so on)

is this ontopic? >:-D

I have a windows VM but. . .

Oli
@Rinzwind It's answerable and about Ubuntu.

@Oli not without forking 200 euros over to microsoft >:-D

Oli
There's no no-proprietary rule. We have questions about other commercial software.

1:20 PM
can't even find the answer to that online :-(
and obscure corners are obscure :=)

There was a meta post about this wasn't there? As I recall the decision was that bash on Windows is on topic because it's running an Ubuntu base.

@terdon it's also a Canonical service technically

Ah, I guess that's the main reason then.

so even if we don't like it, we can't close it

It still seems strange to me. There's bound to be differences in implementation.

1:23 PM
but we can always ignore the questions about it

I would expect Ubuntu Windows to be more different than, say Mint or any other derivative distro. I don't really know though.

I dont want mosquito's messing up my OS :=)

@terdon well it's technically just Bash, but implemented by Canonical and MS

well there is a PM from MS who appears to be willing to provide support on AU askubuntu.com/questions/811509/…

So it could be a new build of Windows, but we'd still support it because it's Canonical

1:25 PM

Q: Do we consider "Ubuntu on Windows 10" the same as an official Ubuntu flavour? Do we support it? To what extent?

kosAs many will have heard of, Microsoft will distribute a stock Ubuntu installation to be run on Windows 10. Source. Someone has made the point that being this the result of a partnership with Canonical, questions about it should be supported. Per the Help Center: Questions that you may ask: ...

@Zacharee1 Yes, but for reasons that have never been clear to me, we consider bash questions off topic if the OP happens to be running Mint. It just seems very strange that bash on Windows is on topic but bash on Ubuntu-based Linux distros isn't.
It all depends on how much (if at all) they've tweaked the "stock Ubuntu"
And I don't know enough about it to have an opinion.

hmmm seems I opened a can of worms :P

@terdon could we not just strip out the info about mint and leave it as a purely bash question?

@edwinksl Yes. That's what I usually do.
I'm just dreading the question about, for example, using adduser on Ubuntu on Windows. I have absolutely no idea how that will work or if it will work at all.
Is it just bash or have they also ported coreutils and other tools?
What does their sed look like? GNU? BSD? Something else?

@terdon the intro made for this included creating a user

@terdon Here's how I see it. We have sort of an exception for Bash (or any shell), as long as it's in the Ubuntu environment. Now, Bash in Windows isn't in Ubuntu, but we need to forget about whether or not it's Ubuntu, because it's still a service provided by Canonica. Doesn't matter if it's Ubuntu-like or not, unfortunately.

1:29 PM
@Rinzwind OK, but if so, it is much, much more than "just bash".
@Zacharee1 I guess. I hate that though. I'm here to support an OS not any random service provided by a private company. And yes, I know I'm in a minority.

@terdon well I don't like it either :p

@terdon found it

UNIX!!!!!
Gorilla Glass 5 is less scratch-resistant than 4 o-O

Yeah, that's the default message. Those programs are old.
@Rinzwind OK, so that means there's a whole lot more than bash. I guess the argument is thyat it should now be considered an "official" flavor and we support it just like we support Lubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome and whatever else.
Which reminds me; we'll need to update the help pages about this.

yeah

1:33 PM
alright guys looks like we have welcomed the m$ devil into da house

The iPhone 7 might have a 256GB storage option

Great. Just what we need. A ton of clueless Windows users asking crappy questions. :'(

Which could be easily and more cheaply done with an SD card
@terdon we already have a ton of clueless Mint, Kali, Arch, SUSE, RHEL, Ubuntu and Windows users asking crappy questions
it's just that most of those can be closed

as far as i can tell, SU is bearing the brunt of the "bash on windows" questions so far

good
don't tell them about us
shhh

1:35 PM
@Zacharee1 I know. AU has the highest rate of crap questions of any site I'm active on. That's what we get for being linked to from the Ubuntu website where we're called "tech support". Sigh

@terdon heh. That doesn't explain why we get so many Mint questions though

@edwinksl Good. They're probably better off there. A lot of them will probably require both Windows and Bash knowledge so SU is a better place for them

they seem to have researched and found that it's based on Ubuntu, yet they can't research the Help Center

@Zacharee1 Because it's very reasonable to assume that Mint would be on topic. The differences between the two are very small, after all.
I was very surprised when I read that Mint is not on topic here.

@Zacharee1 the mint websites linked to AU too >:-D

1:37 PM
Off the top of my head, I'd say that ~90% of all Mint questions are equally applicable to Ubuntu.

@Rinzwind sorry, I've checked that :p

:D

@terdon But like I said above, they've done the research to see that Mint is Ubuntu, so why can't they read the Help Center?
@terdon Maybe, but we can't know :p

honestly i wouldn't mind us doing support for mint but i think the mint people are the ones who might go "mint isn't ubuntu"

@Zacharee1 Well, I can tell you that I've spent a few years using both and saw next to no differences.

1:38 PM
@terdon I think they're behind the scenes, and there are different utilities and such

@edwinksl I doubt that. Mint is Ubuntu and never claimed otherwise. Not LMDE, mind you, that's significantly different.

@edwinksl well we can talk to Caonical

@Zacharee1 yes, just a few extra tools, all of which are also installable on Ubuntu.
I think Oli once told me they change the kernel a little but I don't know.

@terdon yeah, but if they ask about those, it's a problem

@terdon cool, then i see no good reasons why we can't support mint

1:39 PM
Hence the ~10% that might not be applicable to Ubuntu. I've never seen anything like that though.

i used mint before ubuntu and as far as i can tell, the only diff to most casual users is the default DE that comes with it

@edwinksl because we're following the Help Center and saying we only support official flavors

The installer was better as well last time I used it. And the hardware support. Also they include some proprietary tools by default which can be useful.

but we can change the Help Center :P

1:40 PM
@edwinksl that WSL faq is wrong

@edwinksl this requires a Meta discussion

But last time I tried either Mint or Ubuntu was 8-10 years ago so things have probably changed.

it is not /mnt/c: but /mnt/c

@Rinzwind lol... you should let ms know their faq is wrong :c

@terdon well that article pretty much says Mint just has more customization
I think that makes it too altered to really be Ubuntu

Does anyone know anything about setting up a content management system for a website?

@ParanoidPanda @onebree might

A: What are ways to detect running under windows 10 emulation?

RinzwindThe WSL faq does not show anything about identifying bash on windows. Notable though: Bash for Windows will have a mount point for the Windows devices. So when a ... /mnt/c: exists you are using bash on Windows (remark: that FAQ from Microsoft is probably wrong and it is /mnt/c and not /mnt/...

@ParanoidPanda I make those myself from scratch :=D

@ParanoidPanda use wordpress? nathan will hate me saying this so much :P

@Zacharee1 I don't know. Given that some people consider a different DE to be "customization", I don't trust such statements very far

@edwinksl no, use Weebly :D

user136984
1:44 PM
@edwinksl: No, that thing is just full of vulnerabilities...

@terdon well I got from that article that the customization options wouldn't work on Ubuntu, so I think that's a pretty big code difference. All the Ubuntus are the same, but with different Desktops
@ParanoidPanda well add some JS then

user136984
I don't know, maybe if I get the time I'll make it all myself, I just want a reasonably easy and safe way to upload my artwork to a nice looking website (my website currently looks horrible, like it was made in the 80s).

@Zacharee1 just read the article, it's saying the differences are cosmetic. Just a different default DE and a couple of extra tools. These could just as well run on Ubuntu.
@Zacharee1 Same thing. The customization would work just the same on Ubuntu Mate, if it's about Mate or on stock Ubuntu if it's changing config files.

@terdon this is what I was thinking about
> While Ubuntu is still based on Linux and is configurable under-the-hood, many pieces of Ubuntu software aren’t very configurable. For example, Ubuntu’s Unity desktop has very few options.

good rant from the EFF: eff.org/nl/deeplinks/2016/08/… :D

1:46 PM
@ParanoidPanda I'll get my GIFs

@Zacharee1 Well yes. That's why nobody but Ubuntu has touched Unity.

user136984
@Zacharee1: For a moment there I read that as "GFs"! :P

@ParanoidPanda reminds me of the days of geocities...

@terdon Unity's an example for the point there, so I was thinking there might be other stuff

But unity is just a program running on Ubuntu. It's only a skin.
Some people even seem to like it.
:P

1:48 PM
giggle
this should be possible with xdotool but it doesn't seem to work... askubuntu.com/questions/814072/…

@ParanoidPanda you could look at a static site generator if you don't want to deal with a CMS

@terdon nvm, you're not getting what I'm trying to say :p
but it does seem like Mint is quite similar to Ubuntu
I guess it's just that it sells itself as a separate OS

I think the main reason it isn't on topic is that the AU community has decided it's too hard to know whether a particular Ubuntu-based OS has made any significant changes, so it's safer to make them all off topic. This isn't unreasonable.
Basically, we have to draw the line somewhere, so we may as well draw it at Canonical's doorstep. If it ain't by Canonical, it ain't on topic.

yeah

@Serg i posted that webupd8 article on le reddit and it got a few upvotes, so hopefully your answer got a few more eyeballs on it now :D

someone in AU messaged me in quora about his AU post

can I kill dbus-daemon?

I think it does a lot of things?

I killed and then it killed my x session

why don't we have autocomment for other close reasons?
like closing for being specific to EOL releases...

we have an EOL close reason

how do we use auto comment? I have forgotten

@Zanna why not just use the .bashrc in /etc/skel?

or just scp your own .bashrc there
you could do that for sure
but OP asked specifically and I gave specific answer
shall I expand with more options?

@Zanna sure you shell (you missed a glorious opportunity to do a pun)

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding on that question!
meh idk... we'll see

i just sshed into a debian machine and i am root now after doing sudo -i
or am i misunderstanding

are you root@remotesystem or root@localsystem?

4:58 PM
former

oh well I am misunderstanding
it's confusing for me as I can only ssh to myself

;) good thing i have a debian server to ssh into

but when I do sudo -i get root's prompt, not the custom test prompt I just made
