man, I don't know what advice to give except don't let them get to you (even though I know it's hard not to). I mean, do things the right way and they will sort out, not like anyone else has any idea of what is best for YOU

I don't even know what's best idea myself . . .
Anyway . . . onto other , more happy things

Use this as a learning experience. When you get older and your son is in the same position, remember what it felt like.

yup. i'm gonna remember that quite well

@Serg did you buy the monitor?

@NathanOsman nope, I decided I'll stick with my dual screen for now. I found a different one there, Dell, which was 20'' x 16'' , but i also decided to wait it out. If I still want it, I can return tomorrow or some other time

12:12 AM
Good idea to think about it.

I got myself headphones and bicycle tire. I wanted to take out my gf on "virtual" date via interwebs : go to local park, rice bicycle, maybe take some pictures and skype . . . something like that . . . but my rear bicycle tube has gigantic hole in it, it's like not fixable. So got a new tube
Kind of neat headphones, relatively cheap, 10$ , modest quality. And look pretty . . . not that i really care about headphones being pretty . . . i cant see them anyway on my head

hm. Kinda embarassing, but can someone with close rights tell me if there's a specific EOL close reason and what it says?

"However, I'm unable to install Broadcast Using This Tool (BUTT) on Linux." BUTT lol
This question is specific to an end of life Ubuntu release. These are no longer supported and are therefore off-topic here. To upgrade, see: How to install software or upgrade from old unsupported release?

You could try removing the HKCU\Software\Nathan Osman\NitroShare key from the registry.

i don't see how "good" is not opinion-based
your good differs from my good
that's all there is to it

9:24 AM
this is not good

xD

@edwinksl It is 100% opinion based. What's worse, Karel's "answer" is nothing but a straight copy/paste of Canonical's marketing. I have no idea why he considers that fact.
Nor why he thinks that because he posted something on SO Docs, that should somehow magically make it good. And nor why he thinks that his answer was being reviewed as opinion based, only questions can be so reviewed.

yeah i agree with your post. i can't for the life of me see how "good" is not an opinion
also i didn't find the analogy particularly useful for answering the specifics of the question
oh well
:(

@edwinksl You could've been a bit nicer with your second comment ;)

11:27 AM
@RPiAwesomeness that is true

my bad

It's not that big of a deal, it's not like it's a 500 character comment berating him for his stupidity, and maybe he didn't take it badly, it just seemed a bit harsh.
It's cool. I know I'm not super active anymore because of what's going on in my life, so I can't be super complainy about these things, it's just one thing I don't like about SE/the linux community is that the people involved often come across as arrogant and dismissive, and that scares people off.

in my defense, OP is not a totally new user on SE (he has 8 questions in SO), so him posting a clearly off-topic question annoys me more than usual

Understandable

also, words online tend to come across as harsher in tone than is intended :(

11:32 AM
Unacceptable.

@edwinksl Yeah, they do. SE needs to support emojis, that would help xD

@Anwar Did you pass it a directory to parse? The __main__ will except-out if there are no arguments.

i am surprised it fails for python 2 actually
nothing in it looks specific to python 2 (or 3 for that matter)

Oh, and even better, you could say "I Dug and found a bug"! :D

2:42 PM
@ParanoidPanda what craziness? you seem uncrazy to me :P

@edwinksl Why do you python types keep insisting on reinventing the wheel? :P
All that needs is GNU date and a for loop.

@terdon because i can give this to a windoze user and it will still work

And why is that a good thing? :P

@terdon you got me... :(

good point^^
good point^

2:44 PM
Well, have a +1 from me, even if it is like using a tank to kill a fly.

why not have several wheels? ^_^

embraces the downvotes

@terdon are there any other methods? :P
I would even prefer 2 tanks :=)
2

@Zanna Only because this one liner does the same thing his 13-line python script does:
for d in *; do mv "$d" "$(date -d "$d" +%F)"; done

indeed
it could be halved at the expense of some readability

2:46 PM
And hey, if @edwinksl gets to show of his python-fu, I get to show off my GNU-tools-fu :P

applause

@terdon uses tank to kill this fly

I like many wheels. I can learn a lot and travel far :)

@terdon now the floodgates are open and someone will use perl/java/c++

Aww, shucks, steeldriver had already posted the same basic idea.

2:47 PM
@edwinksl only if it can be done in less chars :=)

@Rinzwind feels like we are codegolfing here :P

Damn straight!

@terdon damn skippy!
am I being stubborn? >:-D
I suspect that nothing will ever change your mind. I really think, though, that your approach is akin to the chap whose last words as he looked over the parapet were "they couldn't hit an elephant at this dist....". help.ubuntu.com/community/LinuxvirusiWeasel 4 hours ago

@Rinzwind Well you are assuming that people only ever install packages from the repos. That's not necessarily true.
You also seem to be overly certain that no malware will ever make it onto the repos. While hard, I don't think it would be impossible for that to happen.
Appart from that, you sound quite reasonable to me.

@terdon you make the same mistake. Malware is more than virus and this is solely about virusses.
The biggest problem would be a rootkit that gets installed from the repos from some default app.
If that ever happens I and many of us will dump Ubuntu :-X

2:58 PM
@Rinzwind I'm not saying that all malware are viruses, only that malware includes viruses. I'm referring to this part of your comment:
> For a virus to break our OS it needs to be inside the Ubuntu repositories and in a piece of software we all download to be harmful

It clearly says virus there :=)

i) that could happen and ii) I could install something from source or from a deb package not in the repos.

Not malware

@Rinzwind Yes, and viruses are malware.
One type of malware.

yes and the focus was -virus- >:-D
not rootkits ;-)
otherwise I would be a lot more paranoid :X

3:00 PM
Sure. All I'm saying is that you can't rule out 100% that malware (of any form, including viruses) could make it into the Ubuntu repos.

if it does Ubuntu is finished :=)

They could be hacked, a disgruntled employee could do it out of spite, it could be human error. Anything could happen. Is it likely? No. But it isn't impossible either.

and that is it from me

And you're still ignoring other ways of installing software.

operation dustcloud starts now :=)

3:01 PM
Don't get me wrong, I agree with what you're saying. I'm just pointing out that you could be a tiny bit less absolute about it.

again: we are talking about virusses not any other kind of malware ;-)
And in that regard I will keep at it: there are no virusses -yet-
B Y E :=)

added a ruby version :D

Um. OK. But I never said there were any viruses, or not in the wild anyway. Only that you can't say never.
I still think installing antivirus software on *nix that isn't serving Windows is a waste of time and space.
No argument there.

@Anwar nice :D

oh great I better go read the ruby version...

3:05 PM
thank you voters :)

one for you @Anwar and one for you @terdon ^_^
I'm glad that question got a little more love

@Zanna thanks :)

cheers

Though I lost all of my sublimes packages and color scheme collections :'(
did mv ./config ./config-old and then gone

@Anwar They should still be in ./config-old then

3:08 PM
where is ./config :P

oh. I did reverse them. but now the ./config is complete new!
@Zanna in your home. was trying a settings reset

He means ~/.config not ./config

I know just being... irritating

user136984
@terdon @Rinzwind: If you count it, someone did manage to get some nasty malware into the Ubuntu Phone repositories.

user136984
Possibly it would have more been described as a rootkit though.

3:13 PM

@terdon: This situation with my auto-correct is getting worse and worse! It may not be that rude or anything, but the person I just texted is very sensitive to all these sorts of shortenings of words and let's just say that even though I didn't put it there, when I pressed send, "Viet" appeared in front of my first sentence as if that was how I was addressing them! So it's going to be fun explaining that to them... I have to find a way of disabling auto-correct, it's really buggy...
