5:00 PM
instead of zanna@monster I get root@monster:~#

i think then you need to edit root's .bashrc?

so it sources root's .bashrc
but only because I made the shell interactive

yes i think so

yes it's clear

i am pretty sure someone wrote all this out in gory detail in U&L somewhere

5:03 PM
but that means it's not necessary to set the prompt to debian chroot as it will source root's .bashrc with the command I use... assuming root has a .bashrc on this mysterious unknown remote system

askubuntu.com/questions/814278/how-do-i-recover-my-ubuntu wouldn't this fail without --no-preserve-root?
what even is yooyr rofl

Is there a difference between GB and UK in Olympics medal tally?

i forget, gb has no northern ireland but uk does right

yes

I'm disinclined to test whether it will fail or not
possibly this person is just a troll... looking at the comments

5:08 PM
good thing dino (without the jokes :() is here

link please

I once saw a post saying "How do I delete python 2 and python 3" and it vanished before I could type "NOOOO!!!"... whisked into /dev/null by mod-fu I guessed

what on earth is yooyr

btw OP is definitely trolling
he just plagiarized an entire answer in a different question

5:10 PM
In order to fix the issue, he rméd some more in a script? What is this I don't even.

he seems to be angry

dino gets to exercise his superpowers

Markdown don't work in flag dialogs. :/

@edwinksl -1 for not having common sense never have the rm -rf / command in your terminal, bash scripts or what ever.

does it even work without --no-preserve-root

5:15 PM
it can still delete your home folder I think.

i actually clicked on the link provided by OP
i suggest you all not to
he is definitely trolling

is the post spam?

Lol

lol dino did you click or did you actually just resolve the short url

You put a + at the end of goo.gl to get the final url.
at least he didn't mispell it as your like I first thought.

5:21 PM
I knew that post was an ad for yooyr. (not really)
I did not knew anything.
Fun Fact: I take screenshots of spams and bad posts on AskUbuntu/StackExchange now is that weird?

yes

It's True!

@edwinksl GB @ Olympics = Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team
But otherwise, GB does not include NI.

I don't really agree with bodhi about the post being a dupe... it may be trivial to the gurus, but it seems worth a unique post to me...

@dino uhh is that not confusing

5:27 PM
it's just for Olympics that they include NI in GB.

what's wrong with just calling it Team UK

NI is always in UK not just for Olympics
we should call it team UK
but this country I live in only has embarrassing names... I'd go for a new one

@edwinksl historical reasons because GB was one of the few teams which has been part of every Olympics since 1896.
and NI was not part of GB to make it UK back in 1896

@Zanna lol what embarrassing names are there
"‘Team UK would not be a completely accurate description’ the BOA commented, ignoring that ‘Team GB’ is even more inaccurate." exactly

5:35 PM
i am reading that exact same post too :P

Nice

Moggy • 4 years ago
Wales isn't even included in the Union Jack flag!!!!
lol

I think "Great" is embarrassing because we are the most evil country in history, I think "Kingdom" is embarrassing because it's sexist and makes it sound like we are a real monarchy, and misgenders the current monarch?

Did anyone notice Bash in Windows sounds a lot like bashing Windows?

UK doesn't include Bermuda, Gibraltar, BOT, etc? Why is this so confusing..

5:42 PM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 bash means these here. so we do :)

@Zanna fair and fair

hehe :)

meanwhile we need a better demonym for US

I just call you USians
pronounced "you-ess-ee-ans"
I have written countless book reviews using the term

at least it offends fewer people than "Americans" does

5:45 PM
I'm going to keep doing it as much as possible until everyone else adopts it
yeah I can't say "Americans" it just ain't right!

I'm going with Muricans.

hahahaha

lol

but join my project, don't fork it

many americans call their country america too

5:49 PM
I noticed

No, it's the greatest country in the world.

this side of the atlantic is as weird as your side

you mean the pond?

And nearly as evil :)
hmm should I go to the Tate, or should I stay ~ and play with Ubuntu?

Guide to Tate?

5:52 PM
Tate

I edited my answer in case .bashrc just needs to be sourced on the remote system, and if not to scp own bashrc, and if not to make a new file
it's not clear on Tate website what the last entry to the exhibition I want to go to is... it's already 1900

i already upvoted your answer long ago :P

Q: wifi not working also bluetooth in linux ubuntu

Naveen KumarI installed ubuntu 16 and now enabled all additional drivers now the problem is after enabling the wifi "enable wifi" the wifi's are not shown to connecting but when I connect through ethernet cable to my laptop It's work perfectly.. now I want how to show all wifis after enabling wifi and connec...

thanks @edwinksl <3 I wasn't hinting! just letting you know I made use of your suggestion

Hmmmmm

5:59 PM
oh i liked your answer as a different interpretation of the question... the question wasn't super clear on what OP is actually looking for
i am a dumdum though, so i prefer to just copypaste from /etc/skel and call it a day and not muck around with ssh options :P

but I don't think they have the problem on their own system, only in ssh

^ In your firefox font answer you can also include that these error will go away if they update the Firefox to 48

well we will know when OP tries it out when he/she gets home :P

they would still have to do all that stuff I said for it to work... you could copy from /etc/skel to .bashrc on the remote system, but you'd still have to make the shell interactive like ssh remotesys -t bash -i
thanks @Anwar :)

I tested it. and the cause was somehow some fonts/directory had given modification time in future

I think I am finally calming down and becoming a big Jazz fan... :D

@Zanna why not just do ssh username@remotemachine? that would give an interactive shell right?

I have a fontconfig error from Telegram but it still seems to run

fontconfig errors are often ignored

@edwinksl yes that would work
good point hahaha

this is interesting askubuntu.com/q/814283/61218

I've tried it with file-4.21, file-4.23, file-4.24. In 4.21 and 4.24, the bug exists, but 4.23 correctly determines the file to be ASCII text. This was on Ubuntu 8.04.1. This bug was introduced in file 4.20-4 (after dapper), and fixed in Debian file 5.01-1 by escaping the spaces in the relevant magic entries. I choose Ubuntu because of it's Orange flavor. I think it was more attractive at the older time. around Hardy Heron. I still miss those loading screen

I choose Ubuntu because a friend gave me a free 10.04 CD.
at that time, they were shipping them for free all over the world.

Oh! I too got some free Ubuntu CD shipped by Canonical

I can't believe the other answer that tells how to set your PS1 in the current session only and doesn't even work properly because the quoting is wrong and ignores the fact that the question is about ssh is getting all the upvotes hahaha

@Zanna lol

you can just edit in the " in if you want :P

I've given a vote

I should edit in the quote but also I think the OP doesn't really want it to say "test@desktop" and I don't want to edit that because it would conflict with author's intent

6:45 PM
... to close

oh no 4 CVs already, what have i done

@edwinksl wasn't it a duplicate?

i thought zanna disagreed but she also removed her comments, so you can't see them anymore :P

I am puzzled by this answer to an old question: askubuntu.com/a/782/146105 The link given in the answer is no longer valable. Does this affect the validity of the answer ?

@CristianaNicolae you were editing I lot. Thanks for all those works :)

Oh! You're welcome!... I'm sure that editing is a common "hobby" for many users of AskUbuntu. @Anwar
:-)

@CristianaNicolae this is probably good enough archives.nd.edu/whitaker/words.htm

Since the main part of the answer isn't much related with that link (or is it?), I think it is still a valid answer.

I put in your link @edwinksl :)

7:03 PM

@Zanna This was exactly my question: if the old link should be swithced with the new one.

I disagreed with the formatting decision to make all the menu buttons code formatted though... I made them bold... idk... seems confusing to put them as code
it's often the case for me :) which one are you reading?

the inode one

7:07 PM
@edwinksl hmm.. i too feel like that

@Zanna OK I must admit, I felt confused myself while I was editing. LOL (Embarrassing) Anyway, now, my comment is no longer valid. I'll delete it.

ooh yes I am glad you mention it... I upvoted that question earlier, I hoped I would learn something good from the answer
that's a proper answer :)

@Zanna you clearly didn't go to tate

like I said, I couldn't be certain the thing I want to see wouldn't be closed...
but yeah, I am rubbish

7:24 PM
AU benefits though, we wouldn't complan

@edwinksl I think he was not sure if he needs reStructured Text or Sphinx?
well, what happened?

@edwinksl <333

oh heart

which one closed?

@Zanna :D

7:31 PM
Good bye, people!

goodnight, @CristianaNicolae

@Anwar looks like OP has sphinx already

off topic? "I've tried everything" <-- so there's nothing we can do "why hasn't the bug been fixed?" askubuntu.com/questions/814320/…

i have a very snarky response to people who say "i have tried everything" :/
anddddd chilli already wrote an answer

why do people post pictures instead of text for error reports?

7:40 PM
auto-upvoted since it's chili haha

because this is the era of instagram and snapchat

I think it's because they haven't figured out how to copy text from the terminal too

isn't he the only wireless gold badge holder

thanks
yes. it seems so

yeah he's the only one with that badge... but hardly anyone has any gold tag badges...

I consider tag badges the nicest thing to get on AU

I agree

Q: How to connect to a ssl vpn tunnel with motp(Mobile One Time Password) using Ubuntu(16.04.1)?

blade19899The company decided that they needed more security, and they changed some things to the vpn. Which is fine, but I don't know how to connect to a ssl vpn tunnel with motp(Mobile One Time Password) using Ubuntu(16.04.1)? Any ideas how?

@Zanna :-) I'm back for five minutes. It seems that I'm "glued" to AU. Can anyone tell me if this question is off-topic? Because it kinda seems to me to eb so: askubuntu.com/q/814321/146105

@blade19899 voted for you question. but I don't have much knowledge on this field

heh I used quickbooks for years working for London School of Samba... I pity that person!

@Anwar Thanks! Hopefully this I can get this to work soon.

7:50 PM
It seems to me an off-topic question

aaaand heemayl is the one with the gold bash badge :) :)

OK, now I'm really going! Bye!

Takkat is the one with VirtualBox

but how can we close it
@CristianaNicolae AU is soooo addictive

@CristianaNicolae I think it is an Off-topic
I too get addicted again I guess

7:53 PM
Kali is a beautiful name though, almost as nice as Ubuntu

I think it's an Indian name

yes... I know it as the name of the Hindu "goddess of death"

and recreation
or something like that
I used to know this stuff
> she therefore represents Time, Change, Power, Creation, Preservation, and Destruction
yep

seems appropriate for a pentesting distro

8:03 PM
done

but I don't think it is

o_O

done... chili is the only person with the silver wireless tag badge as well as gold

"how i can shoot her" whyyyyyyyyy u shoot people

hahahahahahahahahahha

seriously
it's so weird

8:05 PM
@Zanna legend has it if you need to find chili, just tag a question with wireless

I'm really tempted to comment "wat" on the post

this is spectaculously incoherent still, but see what it looked like before I attempted to edit it askubuntu.com/posts/814151/revisions

@Zacharee1 you could ;) and remember to delete it later

@Zanna Device Manager and fstab? wat

I can't make head or tail of it... I don't think it is Ubuntu even

8:07 PM
@Zanna Device Manager is Windows, but fstab is Linux

yeah but what kinda fstab is that???

idek
or DD-WRT
it's definitely some form of Linux
> Device manager sees the disc but cannot format it, so it was formatted by telnet in ext3 format.
Formatted with Telnet? Wat

haha ikr

It's a satellite TV receiver

This is not even remotely related to Ubuntu

just leave it alone please — Zanna 30 secs ago
I must agree with that

I deleted it haha as they seems to have done something weird already

8:21 PM
Follow @Zanna's advice and let it be. Just search Python on this site and you'll find hundreds of horror stories from users who tried to uninstall, update, change the default version of, or somehow modify the behavior of Python in Ubuntu. It's an essential system component; messing around with it can end up having the same effect as deleting system32 in Windows. — Zacharee1 8 secs ago

^_^

My default python3 is 3.5.2....

OP just needs to change the symlink

so what happened? they are using? 14.04? they installed higher version by hand?

@Anwar It's about the usage of a third party program, and there's nothing special regarding developmental software in this case
@edwinksl are you sure? We might break his system

8:23 PM
@Zanna yeah i think OP had installed python 3 from source

yeah must have done...

@Zacharee1 3.5.2 suggests OP is on 16.04 (14.04's python3 is 3.4.x)

I wouldn't advise them to change the symlink though, I don't want any blood on my hands

@edwinksl yeah
@Zanna agreed. They'll just have to live with weird Python stuff, or update the same way they got two versions

8:24 PM
i suspect 3.5.0 was installed by OP outside of apt and he had changed his python3 symlink to point to 3.5.0

@edwinksl well you can tell him to change it
but we don't know anything if anyone asks

but blood will be on my hands, nooooooo

what version of Ubuntu has 3.5.0? maybe they haven't changed the symlink
I will happily advise them to change it back to system default but that's it!

Ah
they've clarified
well we can show them how to correct, but say it could cause severe damage

Q: Why does Quickbooks work with Ubuntu, but not Fedora?

aswineI have two Samba servers. One is running Ubuntu 14.04 with Samba version 4.3.9-Ubuntu; the other is running Fedora 24 with Samba version 4.4.5. I'm able to store and use a Quickbooks 2016 company file on the Ubuntu server, but not on the Fedora server. I can read and write other files on both,...

8:28 PM
they clarified... not much. still don't know how they got into this situation which is the key

so that is supposed to be /usr/local/bin/python3.5 and not /usr/local/lib/python3.5 (which doesn't make any sense)
"The reason why I try to update is so I can import tkinter in /usr/bin/python3 but not in the normal python3." <-- huh? shouldn't /usr/bin/python3 be the normal python? :S

@edwinksl read the next sentence. They're saying that they want to import tkinter, but it doesn't work, since the default python3 doesn't have it
I guess they think updating it will add it
and they're using 16.06...

hahaha

@Zacharee1 and somehow the solution is to manually install another python from source? :S

8:35 PM
OP hasn't clarified if just pointer size is enough of an answer
@edwinksl irdek
@edwinksl sometimes people (me too) run into a problem, then find a possible solution, but run into problems implementing the solution, so they ask about that, without thinking that maybe there's an easier way to solve the original problem

X-Y problem?

idk

Q: What is the XY problem?

GnomeWhat is the XY problem? When asking questions, how do I recognize when I'm falling into it? How do I avoid it? Return to FAQ index

yes

8:39 PM
@Zacharee1 sudo apt install python3-tk would have saved so much trouble...

Should I comment the XY post?

@Rinzwind i think python3-tk is not installed by default, so OP needs to install that first

@edwinksl are you sure?

i think so

"While Linux distributions pretty much all come with Tcl/Tk installed, most include Tk 8.4.x, and we want to make sure to get an 8.5.x version. The easiest way to do this is to install the "ActiveTcl" distribution from ActiveState, which includes Tcl, Tk, plus a number of other extension libraries."
from the tkdocs website

8:49 PM
or maybe python-tk is the one that is not installed by default and i am misremembering
@Rinzwind i don't see python-tk nor python3-tk in cdimage.ubuntu.com/xenial/daily-live/current/…
python3-tk is easily installed as a dependency though. i got mine for example by installing python3-matplotlib.
