And generally, when enough of them have ticked me off, i dont buy anything, and They won
. . . nothing

pretty much.

People tend to just say they're annoyed by this practice, but fail to recognize that online publishers are operating in an environment that has never been more competitive, where merely staying in the business is becoming incredibly difficult.

@bwDraco you're editorialising.

I've written about this before. I honestly hate this practice, but recognize that it's a necessary evil in the business.

more that this isn't the place to post long ditribes about a topic
blogs might work
So, here's what happens, You post 20-40 lines on a subject at once. People either 1. Read it and take a while to read it, 2. Get bored and wander off
its usually 2.

6:09 AM
End of rant.

@bwDraco nope evil but not nessisary, spammers get more hits than non-spammers, but nobody is buying from them, they just have good stats, not good money. take the top 1000 companies peel off the 40 jerkweeds and the rest of them did not make thier money by ticking people off with thier advertising.
desperate methods, only show how desperate they are for people to care.

@Psycogeek Spamming is recognized as bad by practically everyone and is automatically filtered by modern email systems. Advertising on websites is a different matter.

Only a subset of the Internet audience do wholesale ad blocking, a practice I do not engage in because it is harmful to the Internet as a whole.

flashing ads were (mostly) spam like, they started the blocking trend.

6:12 AM
I do block certain highly annoying types of content, such as Taboola and Bounce Exchange, but I do not block most ads.
I do not block even in-text ads such as IntelliTxt.
With certain, and very limited, exceptions, I respect the decisions of webmasters to run ads.

I block most ads. I tend to give sites that ask me to unblock nicely exactly 30 seconds not to annoy me.
Most fail

@bwDraco i only blocked those when they became obnoxious and incorrect, and "got agressive"

In fact, Firefox's Tracking Protection feature for private tabs goes a bit too far in blocking content for my taste. It winds up blocking lots of innocent banners.
For example, it causes Forbes to behave as if I were running an ad blocker.

Well that is because your a webmaster, you might expect one day to get money for your website, frankly 90% of the sites i visit, i wouldnt care if they closed up and drifted away. Sites like yours are less annoying for a while, the little people win, the evil people keep getting more evil, and life goes on.

:28213686 no reason to talk that up. Stars are made for various reasons.

6:18 AM
@bwDraco I think the takeaway here is at least one other person agrees

It's pretty damn clear that I'm a really annoying user. I admit it.
There's a lot of change needed.

Eh, happens to me all the time too

@bwDraco you stress over stress, You annoy over annoyance....
POD PERSON
3
Oh, its the becky formerly known as qasdfdsaq

@JourneymanGeek That's basically the definition of generalized anxiety disorder
Oh hey it changed at last

Yeah, that's heavily cached.

6:20 AM
What's a pod person?

imposter.

!!wiki pod people

> A conformist person, especially one who lacks personality or originality

@JourneymanGeek The Gods of Wikipedia did not bless us

You know what's worse? By the time it shows up I'm stuck with it for a month

6:21 AM
Pod People (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) from the 1955 novel The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney, the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the 1978 remake of the same name and the 1993 film Body Snatchers. == Unrelated media == The Pod People 1983 film Invasion of the Pod People 2007 film...

@JourneymanGeek Caching is a necessity for performance. SE literally can't function without it. Imagine if the server had to look up your username every single time you posted a message!

@kerbalspacebecky if you have a reason, you might be able to ask a mod nicely.
@bwDraco that was a statement, not a complaint.
I'll emphasise what I think needs emphasis, TYVM.

Sorry if that was annoying.
Will try to continue; not stepping out at this point.

Canadian syndrome.

!!google canadian syndrome

I made it up because he was sorry for everything.

Oh I thought it was a British thing when you apologize when someone hits you

I'm struggling to behave correctly.
I just can't get over it.

"Hey, I just made a horrible mistake, and I don't want to be KSB any more. Its better than a tatoo of becky on my tail" works

KSB = kerbal space becky?

6:28 AM
yup
I'm on my stream. While the keyboard is nice for a netbook I'm still a bit lazy when I can be,

I'm really tired; that may be impacting my stress levels.

if people have to show up at your doorstep to sell you a product, when everyone else you have to go Find it, thier product either costs too much, or it sucks.

I guess I need to take more aggressive measures to remain calm at all times.
Others have mentioned meditation, CBT, Kyokushin (credit DavidPostill)‌, or other activities designed to bolster mental stability.
I've gone through no such program, which puts me at a massive disadvantage.
I'll be in talks with the appropriate people on this to bring these issues to an end as quickly as possible. JMG mentioned professional help, and I'll do the right thing for myself and for this community.

oh jeez just get a dog, or take JMG for a walk.

@bwDraco now, you're stressing out over stressing out.

Bob
6:36 AM
@kerbalspacebecky That name change is going to confuse me for a while :P

Alright, folks. I've got to get to bed. See ya.

@Bob least he didn't change his ava too

Bob
> as quickly as possible
One does not rush a slow process.

Whoa.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Uhm, about that ...
It looks pretty different to me.

6:38 AM
@Bob The faster this can change, the better. The intent is to have all changes completed by the end of 2Q 2016.

I'm still seeing the hatted TS

I'm not expecting changes to be confirmed within mere days.

Bob
Setting unrealistic goals tend to end up with either abandoning the goal or possibly briefly achieving it and then rebounding.
Not saying that any particular goal is realistic or not, but just a general thing to consider.

To be honest, I'm really fed up with these issues myself. That's why I'm behaving like this.

Bob
Of course, some things just can't be quantified, especially in steps.
Anyway, I've said my piece.

6:40 AM
I'm just venting my frustration.
I'll just try not to do that in the future.
The fix is very simple. I just need to allocate more time to actually cooling down.

I would put you on ignore, if it wasn't somewhat entertaing, like watching the VIew or survivor :-)

Bob
Eh, I do that now and then. But I somehow don't annoy people in the process. As far as I can tell...

@JourneymanGeek Are you calling me a horrible mistake? I find that offensive.

...and we have a chicken-and-egg problem. Without patience, you can't take the time to cool down, but without taking the time to cool down, you can't build self-control, which is a prerequisite to patience.

Yeah what gives, I'm still seeing the old avatar too

6:43 AM
@Bob no bob generally your coherant, non-repetitive , know when to stop being obnoxious , and heck your austrailian, so you dont have to give a shi- about saying what you think :-)

Bob
@kerbalspacebecky It's not refreshed yet at the small sizes.
I only saw the new one cause I clicked through to your SU page, which uses a size I don't usually load.
@Psycogeek I'm pretty sure I've come across as too blunt quite a few times.
Especially when trying to correct people. People don't like to be corrected.
And the occasional wrong correction is worse :P

Good night, folks. Hopefully, the first wave of behavioral changes will come into effect tomorrow.

That is why i stay up way to late on the web, aussies always tell it like it is.

It's really just implementing a simple procedure to stay calm.

@kerbalspacebecky I find your offense offensive and I will flag your flags!

6:46 AM
See ya later.

@JourneymanGeek I got flagged for saying that once

theguardian.com/world/2009/feb/05/… – once again reiterating my goal to remain calm at all times. There are no plans to change this end goal anytime soon; what is changing is the implementation.

Bob
Oh that little caption/watermark is absolutely perfect.
> Keeping Kids Busy
:P

@Bob french battle flag?

6:50 AM
(delayed) lol
I thought we were supposed to get our crayolas out for a moment.

Off to bed.

1. Migrated to higher density SSD
2. Experienced "Windows Failed To Start"
3. Fixed it with Startup Repair Disk
4. Started Chrome and it tells me settings are corrupted
5. I deleted current profile and restored profile from previous media
6. Several seconds after startign Chrome it deleted extensions in "Extensions" folder in real-time
Tried deleting "Chrome/Application" and restoring from previous media and it didn't help

here comes Boris, yo!

1-3 common, bcd data had to have new GUID. 4-6 sounds like something didnt copy right, disk issues or ram (used as copy buffer) . prevent it from happening again, Zip up your chrome folder (when it is working) and whatever it uses to store settings, and save it on the side, returnn it back to that state and day anytime it breaks.

7:02 AM
@Psycogeek You are saying that it stores RAM content in its folder?

@Boris_yo i said copying always uses ram as a buffer. when ram has tiny errors that may be virtually unseen, it can corrupt things you copy, even if the OS still flys along unhindered. because 98% of the OS (in ram) is only fluff and puff anyways.

@Psycogeek @Psycogeek Migration took place at the system boot level i.e. pre Windows Environment.

@Boris_yo thats good, still uses ram.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek you only yoyo once?

4-6 I copied again and again...

7:07 AM
@Bob yoyo yo yo yo yo?

@Boris_yo is your problem that chrome is broken now, or that it got broken? Because that would be my problem, not that one program is stuffed, but that any item got stuffed.

@Psycogeek It works but extensions are deleted.
At least it would help to have the list of extensions installed. I would manually reinstall each.

go offline, restore, screenshot, go online, reinstall :)

yup, seems that a sync issue could be at fault. its that bloody web again, no good can come of it.

I have Sync disabled.

7:18 AM
lol
GENTLEMEN, THE WEB IS A PROBLEM ON WEB BROWSERS

@Boris_yo if you dont remember what was stuffed into it, it is then a good time to install all fresh and without the ones you did not need?

ahh here is a site that has a solution "dont give up on chrome till you have tried this"
1) install firefox
@Boris_yo what was your "migration" method? and isnt the original still in existance?
If you deleted your backup, before you had a backup, then you didnt have enough redundancy

Intel Data Migration Software. Original is still in existence. That;s where I restored from.

@Boris_yo so then in that disk, you could file around and find the installed extentions? then install it all fresh, and wait till the next thing breaks, cause you dont really know WHY it failed.
if it is a windows system, you could do a SFC /scannow, and test the integrity of more file items. Course it would have helped to have done that Before, so you know what the integrity was, before the changes.

7:31 AM
@Psycogeek If extensions had folders with their names it would help.

@kerbalspacebecky that link is totally unsuitable for chat
Nuked it for you. You should prolly not link stuff like that, even with a nsfw warning.
Also I'd pair that up with a kick but I'm on my Phone.

Q: How can I modify data stored by Chrome extensions?

SparrVarious chrome extensions store data about their settings and other persistent information (whitelists for adblock and ghostery, scripts for tampermonkey, styles for stylish, etc). Where do they store it? How can I view and edit it?

that sux, if it is true, the extentions are (also) stored in a database? doesnt sound too sandboxed, or user controllable
Databases that corrupt a tiny bit can fail to load at all, so a minor problem becomes , time for the backup.

7:57 AM
@Boris_yo superuser.com/a/941682/98855 "my users profile was corrupt"
so just recopy the whole users folder over? with all the programs closed. which will also include appdata, and then fire it up an pray.

@Psycogeek Looks like yes. With Google Chrome sync does it also backup data that extentions use?

i would assume so, but (all of it) i am guessing based on reading this little bit.

9:06 AM
@bwDraco For some value of observe DST. We change on the last Sunday in March, so that's the 27th this year.

9:39 AM
what is really insane about this keyboard, and the 150 ways to configure it, every key can be re-assigned, BUT , none of the macros or effects or changes or all the other lunacy can be assigned to Ctrl-Key or Alt-Key or whatever. all this blowhard, video after video, reading through the manuel, and (insanely) i cant find the 2nd thing i would do using it.
Ctrl+Key like ALT+4 or Shift+7 , so every wonderous activity i can create has to take away a key. whats the most useless key on a full keyboard?
tilde- many games use it. Keypad-nope i use it for 3d camera view changing and resetting. Insert-use it when things start overwriting to turn off insert. Pause-games pause using it.
Like they didnt PUT all them keys on the keyboard for no reason, oh look there is an extra space here lets put a useless key there.

Bob
@Psycogeek Ah yea, that's annoying.

I guess i have 1 key the F1 key. because all it does it open useless help files for stupid software

Bob
@Psycogeek I used pause for a while for my PTT (mapped from a mouse button) but it kept interrupting things I was doing.
Never seen it actually pause a game but it seems to have an interrupting effect on other keypresses.
I think my PTT is currently using Insert
My keyboard replaced the right windows key with an Fn key
But I want my right windows key
but I can't remap the Fn key :\
I don't understand this keyboard. I can remap everything except the F-keys, left win-key, Fn key, print screen, scroll lock and the ins/home/pgup/del/end/pgdown cluster
That cluster apparently serves as macro keys with Fn
dumb thing.

9:54 AM
oh, they did that too, i thought they Squeezed the FNkey next to the winkey.

Bob
@Psycogeek different keyboard here :P
Was a cheap one. Full size board w/ MX Browns, cost some $95

it is only the menu key there next to it

Bob
Yea, that's what i have here
Alt, Fn, menu, Ctrl
I want my win-key -_-
I liked using that one for a quick Win+L
Now i need to stretch my hand across

Like a plebian

you can have mine, it dont work for most 3rd party windows replacements, and i dont really use windows junk, just the kernel :-)
fact is i am not really sure at this point why i am not using linux, Ohhh the games!
hmm the menu key, i dont use it, because i would far rather Right Click and have the menu arrive at the curser.

10:08 AM
@Bob I tried the approach you suggested with GIMP yesterday. The gradient thing. It worked. Thanks. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, feel free to say so.)

Bob
lol
good to hear

One of lifes mysteries. Why are some chatrooms active, and some... not?

We're almost always active

@JourneymanGeek So I've noticed. It's like a continuous 24/7/365 international party. Complete with wildly irrelevant video clips and images.
So, how are things in SG?

Yay that worked , the menu key.

10:13 AM
@FaheemMitha I'm in india at the moment

@JourneymanGeek Oh, really? How come? And where?

@JourneymanGeek Oh. How is it?
In particular, what is the noise level like?

pretty quiet, other than having to yell so my granma can hear us.

@JourneymanGeek I see. Quiet is good. :-)
Do you visit India often?

10:19 AM
Year and a half since the last time.
Figured, might as well get it done when I'm still unemployed ;)

@JourneymanGeek Oh. That's a while. But not too long. How long are you visiting for?
@JourneymanGeek Good point.

about a week

@JourneymanGeek Ah, that's quite short. But probably long enough. How are you occupying yourself? Doing touristy things? Shopping?

@Psycogeek I remember I read how it is best to leave 20% of SSD's capacity unused so it won't affect negatively performance because the more capacity is available the more NAND chips are accessible to write at the same time.

How true is this and was it unallocated capacity or capacity that is already allocated and accessible?

Personally, I don't know the South at all, but it is quite different from the North, I think.
They're like two closely related but different countries. Germany and Austria, perhaps.

10:22 AM
@FaheemMitha visiting, doing some ground work for my paternal gran's first death anniversary rites.

Though unlike the North and the South, Germany and Austria share a common language.
@JourneymanGeek Oh. Well, I hope you are having an Ok time. Not getting too hot.

lol
we got caught in a freak rain storm yesterday

@JourneymanGeek Oh? That's out of season.
@JourneymanGeek Just curious, since you live in SG... When you arrive in India, what is your initial reaction? Some possible reactions: holy crap, what's all that noise??!! Look at all those people!!!

@Boris_yo sounds good, as it is all "block" based, so they have to cache up what is In a 1/2 empty block, add your new stuff, then toss the whole block in. plus they leave 1/2 used block all over the place to keep going with speed. BUT they eventually clean that stuff up when your not directally using it.

@FaheemMitha we don't go to the crazy crowded places

10:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ok.

we barely passed through Madras this time

It must still be very different from SG.

I've never been to SG myself, though.

We come here fairly often

10:26 AM
So you're used to it?

@Boris_yo they might say the same thing about a Hard drive, most of it is just about when you get down to the last (more like) 10% the fragmented empty spaces are sparced all over the disk. With the only empty spaces all over in differnet parts of the disk, it becomes a "random" write , defragmenting fixes that completly.
@Boris_yo another reasons for OS itself to recommend leaving extra spaces, is for those 2 reasons, and for paging file expansion, updates, temps and the load of other stuff that the os and other programs will be doing.
which brings up also SSD "overprovisioning" (completly different) leaving empty space even completly unallocated (no partition) because then wear leveling will be able to use these unused blocks. Then there will be lots of extra never used blocks to exchange heavily used ones with. I think manufactures (mostly) have that covered without your help :-) they have some extra blocks, and wear leveling can exchange high use with minimal use (storage) blocks and continue forever.

@FaheemMitha pretty much
and amusingly we're culturally closer to here than singapore in many ways. Other than that we're a little more concervative

10:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek We meaning your family, presumably.

@Boris_yo so for your usual modern SSD, leaving a bit of unused spaces in each partition , which would be common for anyones normal use anyways, would serve multiple purposes. 20% sounds excessive. Modern SSD tend to have more memory, cache up whole block writes then finish them in a whole hunk. There should not be that many partly written blocks laying around after (what is it) garbage cleanup and trim? to be like 20% .

@Boris_yo for overprovisioning , leaving unallocated spaces to have more happy blocks, many people found that to be overdoing it , even back when the SSDs were not as sofisticated, where it might have been more useful. I would not do it, knowing there will always be some empty spaces in partitions, and many files that just sit there (storage) so they wont "wear out" blocks, and can be exchanged with high use blocks.

11:24 AM

11:49 AM
Is there anyone here who uses gscan2pdf?

12:35 PM
My mom broke her laptop yesterday (broke the fan by dropping it then tore away awire that shouldn't have been torn away while trying to dismantle it). She wants me to help her shop for a new one today and I'm somewhat hesitant. I've never owned a laptop. Can someone advise me/give me a link for what's good about brands, etc.?

@Ariane oO

@Ariane Are you certain it can't be repaired?

That sounds like a trivial repair. Also the perfect laptop depends on her needs.

No I'm not, but it's beyond my ability and she doesn't think it's worth paying a repairman especially since she was getting tired of the old thing recently.

they are already shopping :-)

12:38 PM
I consider the wirecutter a good start.
Website
Recommends hardware and the reasoning

Bob
@JourneymanGeek "tore away a wire" can be impossible to repair
Those flexible flat cables
If you damage one it's at least a part replacement

And the link is thewirecutter.com
I would expect dropping a laptop to damage more than just a fan ...
Like the screen or the hard disk maybe.
A fan should survive a drop.

@Ariane does she play a lot of battelfield 4 ? render myan projects and encode bluray disks?

The laptop still turned on but said a problem was detected with the cooling system, to turn it off immediately. I imagined the fan was off axis or something, which if why i thought we could open it up and see
My mom doesn't game at all. She only wants something good for Office, browsing, movies.

Does she own a Iphone, or talk about steve jobs more than brad pitt?

12:46 PM
No haha no macs

is it hooked to the desk 5/6th the time with the power plugged in?

She's trying to use the battery more lately because she learned plugging it in a lot damages it faster. She'd like a good battery because she likes moving it from the living room to the kitchen and stuff but 75% of the time she uses it on the couch so it's not the main criteria
Her previous laptop was a luxury 1200$ Toshiba Satellite. She'd like to pay less this time.

does she know what touch screens are ? which windows OS was she previously using?

Yes she has a smartphone. She used Windows 7.
I think she's fine with any version of Windows. Gotta get with the times at some point.

And what about screen sizes? was her previous a ~13 ~15 or ~17inch type?

12:59 PM
Her old one is 16 inches. She'd like a little smaller.

does she write a lot on the keyboard? use external keyboards or mices?

She types a lot. Chatting and at home work. She almost never plugs in an external mouse, much less an external keyboard.

I was asking because for the most part she doesnt really need massive speed, and OSK typing is possible but very slow (tablet or convertable laptop) Crappy laptop keyboard might suck for a Office word user, but super speedy computer isnt the need.

Yep. I'm kind of scared of those ads with 4 gb RAM laptops though. 4 gb sounds very little.

I consider 8 a comfortable amount.

1:09 PM
Since she's looking at something not too pricy I was thinking about maybe AMD because in desktops they tend to be a better value but I'm not sure about laptops.
But yeah really I'm mostly confused about what's good about which brands

if she did good with a toshiba , then brand is not that big of a problem :-)

Why do you say that?

My dislike for toshiba from way further back in time.
they were pretty badly built, but i doubt it would be anything that would have effected her.
she is not going to be throttling the cpu , and dropping it daily, and running crasy software that has minor issues, connecting stuff all over the outside and all, so that makes things much easier.

What I'm worried about is overheating. My friend's HP overheats all the time.

happy with a mid sized screen, makes it easy to keep the purchace price down doesnt it?
(vrses say a 22" delux viao)

1:19 PM

22 inches? That's ginormous.

I have Boot Manager on drive H...
While OS is on drive C. Should I set drive C for Boot Manager?
I hope it won't be unable to boot after I shut down laptop.
I hope it will not*

Psycogeek can you guide me on brands? Most stores mostly sell Acer and I'm not sure we should trust those.

@Boris_yo the OS for me switches the "assigned" letter to C for the OS drive, depending on what your referring to as the "boot manager" it doesnt matter what the letter for it is, boot now is done via GUID, it might be handed a letter when your in the OS, but that doesnt tell much. The partition layout could matter some, but even then it can be twisted around backwards (boot manager last) and it would still work fine.
@Ariane I dont know, I do not own one yet, only hoped to, checked it out some.

Hmmmm. I'm scared to walk my mom through a mistake

1:27 PM
1/2 the people here though have laptops.

I wish they'd manifest themselves faster, my mom is hurrying me to go fast

@Boris_yo What laptop is it you use ?
@bwDraco has a primo gaming lappy, looks like a nice set of keys on it too, if he is awake yet

Is Lenovo good? I've heard they're will built?

I use Lenovo and I have not much of a problem with it.

Why must my mom be in so much of a hurry. I don't like hurried choices
Sometimes two brands seem to offer something equivalent fit wildly different prices. What's a potential trap in those cases?

1:42 PM
@Ariane i sometimes use a shop n' stop method, doesnt hurt to look, window shopping. Go out with a pre-defined determination to only look. come back check the web for user reviews on what you saw, Then make purchace. (or just use return priveleges)

Things like battery performance, overheating, battery life.

If only stuff would re-pack back in those damn oragami boxes after removal :-)

`she learned plugging it in a lot damages it faster. `
I think this could be nuanced. IIRC the charge cycles are limited. So Iif you just used a phone/laptop/whatever and it is down to 80% charge, then just leave it as it is. DO not contineously charge back to 100% at every opportunity?
Or accept a replacement battery after a few years.
Right i5 6600K ordered.

1:59 PM
My mom is fed up with trying to browse on her smart tv already and get smartphone is shit. I think she'll want to buy today.

Bob
I have no idea why people like Linux.

For the heck of disliking Windows

Bob
Trying to find packages via the command line is the singularly most frustrating experience I've had this month.

So uhm. Any other quick tips for us before we leave?
How's Asus?
I've heard someone complain about their graphics cards but no word on laptops

@Bob what distros?

Bob
2:07 PM
@JourneymanGeek Currently? Kubuntu. I've been frustrated in the past by the exact same thing on Debian, OpenSUSE and Fedora, so this isn't new nor distro-specific. Not even package manager specific.
Heck, it's a right pain in the arse to do the same thing on Cygwin.
Oh, and god forbid anyone ever feels like running Firefox on KDE, apparently.
This is fucking ridiculous.
Three hours ago I wanted to hook up a profiler to FF on Android.
Two hours ago I wanted to get the bloody advanced profiler addon working.
An hour ago I wanted to get Firefox running on Linux.
In an hour, I'll probably be attempting to recompile Linux.
This time tomorrow I'll likely be trying to write my own OS from scratch, at this rate.
I seriously don't want to invest the time and effort involved in setting up a new VM from scratch just for this bullshit.

@Ariane thinkpad T series are prolly a good bet.
