Q: User feed and Question feed

IdearUser feed and Question feed are supported by (1) the Feeder or (2) Google Reader. However, Google Reader is closed this summer. And Feeder is not free for payment(?). Do we have alternative of User feed and Question feed by emails notification or like other feeds supporter?

@ManishEarth Are people votes like crazy these few days?

@hwlau Nah, I just posted on many sites
Also I always have a trickle of rep from random sites

@ManishEarth Those trickle are only available to early users and those have many answer. I think I should involve in more sites instead of just here.

3:14 AM
@BrandonEnright I think there was a MSO post about this effect...

3:36 AM
@KyleKanos I'm sure. The effect is dramatic and obvious. It's not fair but when human beings are involved, what is?

@BrandonEnright craps is pretty fair

@KyleKanos Craps doesn't have a bunch of humans voting whether you win or not.

@BrandonEnright Right, we just roll dice

I shouldn't complain too much. I know I'm at least as guilty as anyone else about using who posted as much as what was posted.
For example, I pretty much upvote every John Rennie answer I see.

@BrandonEnright I'm too objective to do stuff like that. My dad taught me well

3:42 AM
@KyleKanos I try to be objective. I think you'll agree though, to be objective takes much more work. You have to carefully evaluate things against a (hopefully) fixed criteria every time. You can't take shortcuts.

Actually, I think my dad trained me well enough that it doesn't take any more work.
But I so rarely am subjective that I probably am not the best judge on that

@KyleKanos Yeah I was about to suggest the same.

3:56 AM
Though, as objective as I am, I still really only like the Pittsburgh Steelers and can't stand the Ravens (and their QB is part of my wife's extended family ;/)

Hm,

(1) How did John Rennie delete it?

Anonymous
(2) How is it not deleted?

Anonymous
Oh, maybe it was a VTD?

8:19 AM
So, I'm tempted to revert on this

user54412
I mean, asking a do-my-HW is bad enough, but then editing the answer into the question - next we'll be like physicsforums or <insert garbage homework help site here>.com

user54412
and... done - people can ping me to complain about censorship I suppose

10:51 AM
@ManishEarth How can you get the Eureka hat?
It is awesome

@hwlau It's secret :P Dig around on MSO, you can figure it out

Q: Did Astronomy.SE reopen?

CalmariusAs far as I know Astronomy.SE merged into Physics.SE. Recently I asked this astronomy related question: When Venus is the brightest when viewed from Earth? Then I got a moderator comment that it would better fit in astronomy.SE. So what's up? Will the site split again?

neeed...one...more...upvote...for...haaat meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/174525/…

12:54 PM
@ManishEarth Yeah, beg like that and you'll get one :D
@ManishEarth Duh, I didn't see your discovery till now -_-
Nice one ;-)

1:22 PM
Hmm... Either I didn't notice SE in https, or that's just NEW..!!! :D

1:51 PM
in Root Access, 5 mins ago, by allquixotic
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut if you become a mod, I'm quitting the SE network

2:26 PM
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut So you're starting fights with people across the interwebs?

@KyleKanos Yeah..!!! Alwaaaaays :D

@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut Strange. Never occurred to me to start fights with people (in real life or on internets)

I was just kidding... (just as I do everywhere) :P

I presumed as much, given the two or three lines you said afterwards

3:08 PM
@ChrisWhite When he first posted his question, he wrote the energy like this: (hνehνkBT−1). Just a meaningless string of characters. Talk about being lazy. I actually bothered to figure out what he really meant.

@Pulsar It took me a few seconds of staring at it to figure out that it was an exponential.

@KyleKanos Yes, the characters suggested that it had to be something like a Planck law, and it was the only way l'Hôpital could work.

Definitely one of those cases where you really don't want to help them because they put zero effort into writing the question (probably just a highlight, copy & paste from the document).

3:27 PM
@KyleKanos Yes, even more so because the answer was trivial. There really was nothing to add, even if we wanted to help. L'Hôpital is high school stuff. Take the derivative in the numerator and the denominator, and that's it.

Isn't there a limit with l'Hopital too?

Yes, but the limit becomes trivial. The only h that remains is in the exponential, so the exponential goes to 1.

3:43 PM
Good that I still remember simple Calc I stuff.
Don't want to forget that

1 hour later…
4:53 PM
@BrandonEnright: I downloaded kpaint (kde's paint), so here's my flagging history: s14.postimg.org/4ee6wkh9t/phys_so_flags.png

@KyleKanos So you don't flag comments?
@KyleKanos And do you have a rough feel for how many of those are flags for closure?

@BrandonEnright Nope. I generally don't take offense to people's comments

@KyleKanos I'm offended by that comment.

@BrandonEnright Probably most of them, I generally flag only the ones that ought to be closed (zero-effort HWs and duplicates)
I've flagged some answers for not being answers
@BrandonEnright Tough it out ;D
A couple are for migrations too

@KyleKanos Alright I figured most would be flags for closure. When you hit 3k that goes away and then the flags really trickle in.
It looks like you'll be at 3k rep in no time.

4:58 PM
I'm trying to do what I can to keep this site clean. Help out with the community and all
@BrandonEnright Probably. I just another popular question to appear....

@KyleKanos Yeah same. I guess my primary hang-up is that CrazyBuddy somehow hit 500 flags when the bulk of them were after 3k
@KyleKanos A bunch of okay quality answers on boring questions tend to really add up too.

Yeah, 500 flags is insane. He also has 500+ consecutive days on the site too, which is crazy to think about

I've been a member on the site for 0xFF days. I've probably missed ~6 days, all for very good reasons.
But yeah, 500 in a row, in india where power isn't stable is crazy

I'm at 87 consecutive, so close to 100 and a shiny gold badge. It's become easier to keep that streak going now that I (finally) have a smartphone.

@brandon not crazy, @crazy :p

5:21 PM
@ManishEarth Hah..!!! It didn't ping me :D
@BrandonEnright @KyleKanos: Duh, I shouldn't have showed you people... YOU'RE JEALOUS OF ME..!!! :D
Btw, we have power shutdowns -- but this is city, so max. 2-3 hours only
The real problem comes only when I get to my hometown, where it can reach about 8 hours -_-
But, my laptop and dialup will serve their best ^_^

@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut Very jealous indeed

@ChrisWhite seems fine to me... it's a general rule that answers should never be edited into the question, whether homework or not

Can energy and position be measured at the same time?

5:37 PM
@KaziarafatAhmed Classically or quantum mechanically?

Of course accordingly to QM.
@KyleKanos

@KaziarafatAhmed My previous comment didn't link your name

2 hours later…
7:36 PM
@AlfredCentauri regarding your post: physics.stackexchange.com/a/90666/24142 The speed isn't linear. The individual $x$ and $y$ components must not exceed a given maximum, but the combined total speed can.
I didn't downvote it, though :-)

user54412
8:23 PM
Gaia launch at around 08:56 GMT (about 12.5 hours from now)

user54412
(for those interested in astrometry)

@ChrisWhite Cool

user54412
@KyleKanos apparently my department is planning to watch this live in our main meeting area

At 4 in the morning?

user54412
yep

8:27 PM
Did you mention to them the time?

user54412
oh, they did the same for the announcement of the Planck results - had a nice predawn breakfast and all

Differences of departments, I suppose
Also: C sucks :(
Mainly the passing by reference vs passing by value deal

user54412
C is beautiful ;)

@KyleKanos I love C.

Fortran 90+ is where it's at guys...

user54412
8:33 PM
if you want more passing options, you could just compile as C++ and throw &'s around willy-nilly

I don't know enough about C/C++ to do that to Udo's code....

@ChrisWhite Fingers crossed. The Gaia data are going to be spectacular!

9:20 PM
@Pulsar Looks like we're going to learn so much more about our galaxy.
What is the mechanism that it will use for the 3D portion of the data? Parallax due to our motion through the galaxy?

1 hour later…
user54412
10:32 PM
so I've gotten 7 upvotes on an old answer in the last 7 hours... weird

user54412
as far as I can tell it wasn't bumped or anything

user54412
oh wait - @ManishEarth you bountied it

Heh

Interesting question to put a bounty on.
Maybe a little bit of hat-motivated activity there ;-p

Yep
Also because I wanted to bounty it in the past but forgot

10:39 PM
@ManishEarth I thought you pretty much had all of the hats network-wide by now.

user54412
@BrandonEnright he even has Hello World!

@ChrisWhite Which is totally absurd for him.

Hello World is easy

@ManishEarth Yeah just pick some other SE site and pop in and ask an okay question :-)

user54412
@ManishEarth it's not easy if you've already asked a question on every site

10:43 PM
I have like a billion questions that I never get the time to ask on other sites
A bunch of sites I can participate on and don't. And so on and so forth :p
@brandon I aim to, at least the non secrets

user54412
At least it wasn't my checkmark that you stole :P

@chris nah, I engineered myself that hat
Answered a previously-declined-but-was-implemented-later feature request. Free checkmark
The things I do for hats.... :p
I actually submitted a patch to firefox so that I could win a bounty
(I contribute regularly to FF so it wasn't hard, but still)
