12:08 AM
@DavidZ I find it to be very marginal indeed. Anna's answer has some physics content thought so I was reluctant to make a unilateral close.

1 hour later…
1:30 AM
@dmckee Never mind, I was just eager to know what happened... :D
@BrandonEnright A few months back (when you weren't active), we had very low VTC users, but a lot of HW questions pop up.
I try to close it once it appears... So, I flag
And, we also had a blackmagic fella who posted about 20 spam posts within the whole week

@CrazyBuddy Ah okay. Yeah now that I'm > 3k it's a lot harder to get flags. I feel like I'd have to arbitrarily burden mods with flags and I don't want to badge-whore.

Hehe, alright :D

@dmckee regarding holographic stuff being applied to some superconductors, do you know if there is a "popular science" description of that somewhere? I'd be interested in seeing something like that.
My quest for the Fanatic badge has already made me do stuff I'm not proud of!

@DavidZ Oh... Thanks. I never thought they have a list question like that :D

user54412
@BrandonEnright 10k users can help handle (certain) flags too, so it's not too much of a burden I hope

user54412
1:39 AM

user54412
in fact it's now a rather loud notification we have in our top bar if there are flags in the queue

@ChrisWhite Interesting. I didn't know that.

@ChrisWhite Even we 3k users handle flags :)
And, that's how a few flags get disputed ;-)

@CrazyBuddy Those are only review queue stuff. Not comment flags or other non-standard review-queue flags.

@BrandonEnright The "very low quality" and "not an answer" are handled by 10k...
Custom messages are handled by mods

1:41 AM
@CrazyBuddy Are you sure we don't handle very-low-quality flags?

Yeah... That LQ queue is automated - based on characters and voting (I guess)
Don't worry... Manish would popup sometime and correct me :P
@ChrisWhite: Every hat suites you..!!! (unlike me) :D

@CrazyBuddy That tophat is looking great on you.

Yeah, only two look good for me... The 3-hats & this one (& candles too)
Others go out of the grav. frame :D

@dmckee I never take answers into account when deciding whether to close a question

2:01 AM
I'm starting to realize that some of our tags like are questionably useful since they get applied so broadly to just about any question that even mentions the concept.

@BrandonEnright Even spiritual & sorcery ones :D

@BrandonEnright I'm past my 1000 points, so I'm not too worried about getting credit for it. But thanks for the tip ;)

@KyleKanos I meant credit in the Copy Editor badge sense of the word.
@CrazyBuddy Alright you're going to have to explain that one to me.

@BrandonEnright OoOoO. Gold badge is next. Wonder how close I am to getting that one.

@KyleKanos If you go to a review queue like close votes and you hover your mouse over the green bar you will see a "Badge Progress" context box come up showing you how many edits you have.

2:07 AM
@BrandonEnright People come here advertising about pure energy, that they're the special fellas of black magic, etc. and stuff - they can use that tag :)

@KyleKanos In your case, since you haven't hit 3k rep yet, you'll want to pick another queue like first posts

@BrandonEnright One of my students wrote a paper on this. It wasn't a particularly good paper, but I was glad to have read it.
Ahlberg, Liz. *"Electrons are not enough: Cuprate superconductors defy convention."*
Phys.Org. Phys.org, 13 March 2013. Web. 13 Dec 2013. http://phys.org/news/2013-03-electrons-cuprate-superconductors-defy-convention.html.
Wolchover, Natalie. "QuantaMagazine." Signs of a Stranger, Deeper Side to Nature’s Building Blocks. Simons Foundation, 1 July 2013. Web. 13 Dec 2013. simonsfoundation.org/quanta/….
^^^ his primary references.

@dmckee I love it when academic paper names get creative. Sometimes they're brilliant. Like a world of nerd jokes cemented in published paper history.

I think those references are pretty pop-sci, but they should be a start.

@BrandonEnright I'm working getting 3K. I'm less than 400 away now

2:11 AM
@KyleKanos Yeah you're progressing on the site very quickly. Good answers will do that.

@BrandonEnright I has 2 of those.

@dmckee Thank you, I'm reading the Simons Foundation one now.

Of course, I think my best answers are actually ones with 1 or 2 votes ;/

@KyleKanos You have a ton of > 2 answers which is great. Look at anna v for example. She's built up a huge amount of rep on a ton of decent, ~2 vote answers.

@dmckee: I didn't see you with that hat. It looks very nice. Just like a black & white Pharaoh (or say, Osiris in Age of Mythology) :P

2:16 AM
@BrandonEnright Oh, I was counting the "Good Answer" badge as good answers. I just don't think that those 2 Badged answers were my best work, just popular questions.

@KyleKanos Yeah that's the way it works on the site. I suppose that's how it works in most democratic systems though. Popular == high votes. "Good" and "Correct" are only loosely correlated with high votes.
By "best" answer was hastily thrown together and not even entirely complete and questionably correct. But I included a picture of horses so it must have been great!

@BrandonEnright It's sad...I know exactly which one you're talking about
I don't even know what the question was, it just had horsies that you could barely make out and that was somehow important/related to the question

@KyleKanos Yep. An up-vote worthy picture got me to 60.

Does anyone know if you can see how many posts you've edited? Apparently it's not the same as the number of revisions: I've made more than 80 revisions, but I didn't get the Strunk & White badge...

Alright I'm going to go eat. It's safer out there in the real world where nobody knows I'm a physics poser.
@Pulsar Does this not answer that?
18 mins ago, by Brandon Enright
@KyleKanos If you go to a review queue like close votes and you hover your mouse over the green bar you will see a "Badge Progress" context box come up showing you how many edits you have.

user54412
2:26 AM
@BrandonEnright I once included a link to a google image search for cats in cardboard boxes - cutest thing I ever did on stackexchange - and got no votes for it :(

@ChrisWhite See, that's where you went wrong. You needed to violate copyright law by shamelessly including them IN your post.

@BrandonEnright Damn straight!
Ooo: for those interested: Got a text from Redbox (DVD/Blu-ray rental stands here in the US), free DVD rental with code: WZ7DMKG9. Expires 11:59 CT (3.5 hours from now)
I'm not going to use (too much work to do)

user54412
@Pulsar there's also the data explorer: data.stackexchange.com/physics/query/151629/…

user54412
the database is only updated every week? or so, but there are pre-made queries for everything you can imagine

If anybody here is good with numerical methods and can answer this for me, I'd be much appreciative:
1
Q: Stable time step limits for Velocity-Verlet integration

tpg2114I'm implementing a mass-spring solid mechanics solver and I'd like to use the Velocity-Verlet time integration scheme. However, I cannot find anything about the maximum stable time step -- either saying there is none and it's unconditionally stable like an implicit scheme or that there is one and...

I'll even give you a nice bribe/Christmas present! I'll upvote your answer!

2:37 AM
@ChrisWhite Aha, thanks!

user54412
@Pulsar reading the query (and mind, I don't really know what the keywords are) it looks like it only counts questions and answers for which (1) you are the last editor and (2) you are not the post owner

@tpg2114 What stability analysis have you done?

@KyleKanos None because if I can't cite it my advisor won't believe it
And for a method that's been out for decades, surely somebody has done it by now

@ChrisWhite So it seems. Tag edits also don't seem to count.

user54412
@Pulsar they count for tag editor and research assistant (but I don't think editing just the excerpt counts)

user54412
2:44 AM
or you mean editing just the tags on a question?

user54412
in that case it might not count

@tpg2114 Lame. Try [this PDF](www.biomath.nyu.edu/index/papdir/fulllengths/pap_2_83.pdf)

@ChrisWhite Yes, I meant retagging questions.

I can't figure out how to link a response on the mobile client version of chat :-(
Tag-only edits DO NOT count as an edit.
At least towards the Copy Editor badge.

Also, @BrandonEnright: You gotta stop getting Hats so I can get catch up

3:02 AM
Seems futile. I'm sure John Rennie has the most.

Will there be an announcement about who got the most?

You've got 12, I've got 9, John's got 8
At least those are the numbers for Physics

No kidding?! I didn't know there was a leaderboard. Cool!

I've been working to get as many as I could in a day
Some are probably not going to happen

3:06 AM
Well get as many as you can because John is going to crush us.

Possibly.
I do not lose well

Ok, you two get the most

Apparently hats are just a proxy for how much time I've spent on the site recently.

@BrandonEnright No, it only means you did lot of different things

@hwlau Exactly. Like max rep, editing 10 posts, modifying a CW, etc

3:10 AM
How can Manish get so much hats

He's got accounts across so many SE networks

But I thnk none of hats depending on cross site performance
so he has to get hats on some sites independently

@hwlau Right, he's got repeated hats from each of the sites he visits

He has 9 gold badges and 47k rep on mother meta. Amazing.

@BrandonEnright The leaderboard don't count repeat hat. He get 26 different hats already

1 hour later…
4:34 AM
The sound this chat makes is nearly identical to the thermal-expansions popping sound my monitor makes as it warms up or cools down.

5:04 AM
There are so many hats here. How can we get all of them

@hwlau It seems Manish knows how to get at least half of those.

@BrandonEnright You also know that
Count the number of hats you have

@hwlau I got the "Chuck Yager" badge but I have no idea how I got it.

@BrandonEnright Never heard of that badge

Quite a few others users have it. I think it has something to do with upvotes on answers but I'm not sure.

5:13 AM
Oops, you mean hat.

Hat. I mean hat :-)

Anyway

Q: Illustrative pictures for the tags Info page

hwlauI find that the tags Info page is somehow hard to read. Would it be useful to have a simple pictures to illustrate the tag like the Wikipedia pages, for example putting the figure on the right hand side of Special relativity to our corresponding tag? Also, it would be easier to visualize the re...

8:20 AM
@DavidZ there was a suggested edit for one of your questions. I gave it a read, it seemed correct, so I approved it. After a careful reading though I think it is not correct and you really did mean motion and not mass -- so I rolled back the edit. Can you take a look to make sure all is well?

9:01 AM
@BrandonEnright Chuck Yaeger was the first man to travel faster than sound. You can guess what the hat means from there.

@ManishEarth I'm familiar with Chuck Yeager. I don't know what the badge is though.
Perhaps the first person to get an upvote?
Btw you're quite the hat-getting-machine!

Nah. You just have to be quick at something
@BrandonEnright heh, I'll fall back after tomorrow though, going out of town for a couple of days

@ManishEarth Do you have any idea how you got IG88?

Nope
Might have something to do with a bounty
Not sure

@ManishEarth That would make sense.

9:04 AM
There already are bounty hunter hats
also,yay, the hat is evil and blocks other peoples' profiles

Alright well bedtime for me. Have a great hat-getting extravaganza of a day!

How in the world does Community vote, and even review flags?

Anonymous
Maybe voting is anonymous feedback?

Anonymous
11:37 AM
Is there really any point in making a hat secret, and naming it something as obvious as "3 hats"

Anonymous
?

11:58 AM
@DIMension10 Totally for fun..!!! There's no point to make there o_O
The Community user doesn't vote, it only owns the votes. If you flag a post for spam it is automatically downvoted, for example, but that downvote is owned by the Community user to make sure you do not loose rep for helping weed out spammers. — Martijn Pieters Jun 18 '12 at 14:02

Anonymous
@CrazyBuddy But what about *up*votes.

@DIMension10 Probably the same, deleted answers... o_O

Anonymous
@CrazyBuddy Oh, ok.

@DIMension10: BTW, my name is not a great secret. You can visit any of my accounts in the social networks (or my blog) and you could find that out easily :P

3 hours later…
2:44 PM
Now, I'm ready for hats..!!!

@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut How many do you have?

Only 5...
Haven't pursued hats yet..!!!

Some are easy to get. Like edit 10 posts. Up-vote only for a day. Post the first time

Yeah :D
How's my new name for Winterbash? :P

How did you set your name with the Winterbash hats?

2:48 PM
@KyleKanos Why not?
Of course, we can... o_O

No, not why, how did you do it.

Usual edit to your profile... That's all O_O

Oh
You can change your name by editing your profile?

Yeah... After all, it's our display name :)

I thought I was "stuck" with Kyle Kanos...
OoOoOo
I see

2:51 PM
Nah, there's a limit to the changing... But, we can jump over it :D

Don't get me wrong, I like my user name.

hehe, me either :D
I'll change it after winterbash :)

I thought I had noticed Dimension10 changing his name a couple times...

I once had a name like this: Ϛѓăʑɏ βµԂԃϔ

That's silly
Now that I think of it, I wonder if I could get a backwards y in my name....

2:58 PM
@KyleKanos What... But, there isn't any..!!! :D

If you can get funky "letters" like y-bar, I might be able to get a backwards y
It'd be funny to look at
brb

@KyleKanos How about souɐʞ ǝlʎʞ ?

That one is nice

@BrandonEnright Indeed, the edit was incorrect so you were right to roll it back.

3:31 PM
@BrandonEnright and other editors: A tip: If a post of a well-known active user (say, one who visits Phys.SE more or less every day) has a 'suggested edit' on one of his answers, it is recommended to let this user review the edit himself. Also he might take the time to improve the answer further while he is at it.
3

Yeah, I do that all the time. Because, I've seen a lot of suggested edits (from somewhat active users) to the answers of well-known users like Lubos & John. I just skip those all the time :)

3:59 PM
Welcome to chat session people!!! (starts in 5 mins) :D
It's actually Winterbash session. C'mon everyone... This session comes only twice every year :D

I'm here
Still

Me too

@ManishEarth You're in the rain of Hatz, just like last time :D

So what's the deal with the chat sessions. Never done one before

@KyleKanos Just meant for an official hangout...
Mostly, we "try" to discuss about physics topics, recent publications, meta, or some site improvements :D

4:09 PM
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut I see.
So we can go off topic and discuss the Lions losing to a 61 yard field goal last night?

But much often, it goes out of scope :D
@KyleKanos Yeah, chats are meant for that :P

Got it.
That game made me get into Championships for Fantasy Football. I'm totally going to win $360 now.

There's typically an agenda if there's actually anything important going on
And since none of the mods have given one, I assume there's nothing important :)

@tpg2114 Well, new homework policy is still in the pipeline I think
Haven't had the time to write up anything

In the magic of the holiday season, somehow a grade that was at best a 63% if I aced the final turned into a B and an 83% turned into an A
So what looked like a semester that would put me on probation and probably get me fired from my lab actually ended up raising my GPA...

4:14 PM
@tpg2114 Nice teachers.
I don't do stuff like that for my students
They get the grade they earned.
Even if it's a 60

That's what I expected too. I have no idea how it happened
The only thing I can think is that I did really well on the final and proved I am not a total idiot
I just didn't do well on the other exams

I'm glad I'm done with taking exams.

I've got one more class, my proposal, and thesis to go

I always get > 90% for my labs (though I suck at other subjects, especially numerical methods & solid mechanics with its holy megazillion crap of formulas)

I'm an amazing numericist. My degree is basically on computational astrophysics.
Makes my committee mad because I focus on the methods more than the physics.

4:18 PM
That's exactly what I'm doing too
Focusing on the numerical methods more than the physics

@tpg2114 Meh, it has a lot of formulas to memorize... I'm bored of that -_-

@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut Not really actually... Lots of things to derive, and more importantly, lots of code to write

@tpg2114 It's probably not so much a problem when you already have the PhD, but when it's still coming...

@KyleKanos That's why my proposal is so delayed. I passed quals like 3 years ago and haven't proposed yet.

@tpg2114 I was ranting about my class :P

4:20 PM
I'm more a software engineer than anything else right now

@tpg2114 That sounds a lot like me. I passed the quals in Sept 2010 and just passed the proposal defense in June 2013.

Yup, we're in the same boat then.

@tpg2114 Hah, I've got a collection of 40 hydro codes that I'm "stealing" ideas from for my one code that I'm really working on

Maybe that's just a common trend for computational thesis?
That's a lot of hydro codes
We have our own in-house monster of a code for our fluid dynamics, but I'm writing one for solid mechanics right now

@tpg2114 Possible. We can ask Chris White if he's taking it slowly too (he's computationalist as well)
@tpg2114 Yes it is. But it's absolutely necessary to have them all
What's the name of your in-house code?

4:23 PM
LESLIE
I doubt you have ours :)

You are correct, I do not have it
Does it have AMR, Radiative Cooling, and/or Magnetic fields in it?

AMR is being added right now, I added a SMR method, and it does have MHD

C or Fortran?

Yes
:)

Both?

4:26 PM
It's mostly in Fortran 90/2003 but we use C and C++ where we need to

Interesting.
I'm an avid user/promoter of F90+

With all of our code base and the python utilities, we're at almost 1 million lines of code

That is big

Yeah, it's a monster
But it can seriously do just about anything

I'm using AstroBEAR (developed at Univ of Rochester in NY), and that's somewhere around 60K lines

4:27 PM
All of the core code is in Fortran 90/2003 and fairly modular, although not as much as we'd like
Then we have some data analysis routines that we wrote in C and wrapped in Fortran and use SWIG to wrap into Python
So we can use them on the fly, or for post processing and on our own or in Paraview
We've got Paraview in-situ processing hooked up too

Ugh, Paraview. I tried using it once.
Then I cried and opened Visit
And then smiled

4:43 PM
I don't like Visit at all
To each his/her own I suppose

I'm currently using Quantum Espresso
Awesome
Not for fluid dynamics though

@ManishEarth Quantum Espresso? Is that a new type of coffee?
@tpg2114 But it's sooooo easy (insert devious smile)

@KyleKanos Yep, it's for those who don't have the time to drink a full cup

@ManishEarth Hmm. Well, my kids got me up at 5:45, so I had plenty of time to drink my normal 1.5 cups

@ManishEarth your hat looks awfully phallic.

4:46 PM
er...hmmmm
Well, this one is worse
grr, caching
I'll put Frosty back on

Not allowed

@ManishEarth You can wear whatever hat you want but know that whenever I look at your unicorn hat, Unicorns are not what come to mind :-p

@BrandonEnright OoOoOo, that's what that is suppose to be. Unicorns.
Looked like a water fountain to me

oh hey, so I get to be at the chat session today

@DavidZ Nope, you missed it.
We're all talked out
:D

5:00 PM
oh right, they start at 11 EST

@DavidZ I wasn't being serious

I just found the "Schedule" tab for the chat. I doubt many people even know about the scheduled chat. I only knew about it from sitting in here.

About you missing it, I mean

oh... I'm confused. I only remembered that Google Calendar either is or was showing it at the wrong time

@DavidZ People are still here, so it's going on, right?

5:03 PM
@Brandon it's advertised on the main site while the event is happening
@Kyle I guess so
Confusingly, SE sent me an email at 8:20 saying the chat session was in 3 hours

I sure find myself using the Detexify site a lot. Possibly the most useful "advertisement" I've ever seen.

@BrandonEnright I used to a lot, but then I learned all the commands I needed to know to get the symbols

@KyleKanos I'll probably get there eventually. This site is the only place I use TeX though so I don't get as much exposure as you academics and researchers do.

@BrandonEnright I'm probably a rare case. I used Latex to take all of my class notes starting back in Fall 2006.

Yeah, probably

5:12 PM
It seems MathJax doesn't use the right font for $\mathbb{R}$, at least in question titles.

huh
that would be one to post about on meta

It might have to do with a lack(?) of amsfonts

@KyleKanos I'm doing the same here, except I started a year and a half ago.
Not all though
I use a mix of Mathematica, LaTeX, and notebooks for notes. Depending on the professor, class type, and speed

@ManishEarth Best way to learn it. Thought I should clarify that the notes were taken in Latex for Physics & Mathematics courses, not History or English courses that I've taken

@KyleKanos Yeah, I feel the same way. And I also use it for only Phy/Math.

5:17 PM
@ManishEarth I started doing that from yesterday :)

If the professor is doing a math problem on the board I just use a notebook, and proofs are usually available in slides (I may copy the really nice ones to TeX later) but formulae and interesting things go into LaTeX

I was a terrible student in college. I never took notes. It kinda got to the point where "I don't take notes" became a thing and in the few cases where I thought I really needed to take them, I resisted because "I don't take notes".
Alright, what is the rule for undoing upvote or downvotes? I thought they got locked in after 2 hours or so? Somebody just undid a downvote on an answer of mine that has been there for about 24 hours. The answer hasn't been edited either.

@BrandonEnright Hehe, a similar thing happened during my second sem. But, when I thought that I "should" take a few, I missed a heck of lot, that I can't take any more notes in the future :D

There have been several times where I've tried to undo a vote and been unable to.

I thought it was something like an hour

5:21 PM
@BrandonEnright Grace period is only for 5 mins...
Does the post have any revisions at all?

@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut Nope!
4
A: Do you need energy to exert a force?

Brandon EnrightTo augment what tpg2114 wrote, work is usually defined as: $$W = fd$$ Where $W$ is the total work done, $f$ is the force, and $d$ is the distance (actually it's the $\Delta d$ caused by the force). As long as $d = 0$ no work is being done. For example, if you're standing on the surface of the E...

@Brandon was the answer edited within the 5 minute grace period?

Wait... Looking at my reputation, the +1 came from some other answer of mine. I can't figure out why when I clicked on the +1 it took me to that answer.
Either this is a case of stupidity on my part, or a bug in SE. I'm going with bug :-p

Hah, thought so... Your reputation doesn't indicate any undownvote changes with that answer :D

Okay I figured out what I did. The ugly almost black bar had a green +1 so I clicked on it and clicked on the top notice in the drop-down. That notice wasn't about the +1 though, it was about my most recent up-vote. For some reason the +1 showed up in the ugly bar but didn't generate any entry in the menu. The +1 actually came from a post I downvoted that was removed.

5:26 PM
I was wondering how you managed a +1...

@BrandonEnright (sigh)

@KyleKanos Well and if I weren't stupid, I would have realized that a downvote would result in a change of 2

user54412
I guess I'm late again...

@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut Part of the reason why I don't take notes is my handwriting is horrible. So bad I usually can't read it myself. If I really slow down and concentrate and write carefully I can read it but 1) I don't have the patience to write that slowly and 2) concentrating on writing distracts me from the lecture.

@ChrisWhite Better late than never?

user54412
5:29 PM
I was distracted - bug hunting

@BrandonEnright Which is why you should TeX your notes :D

Me too -- boundary conditions are a PITA
As are implicit schemes

@tpg2114 Use semi-implicit then!

I need big time steps or this is not going to be practical :)

Use Hypre?

5:31 PM
My ultimate requirement is to couple this solid mechanics solver that has dx ~ 10nm to a fluid solver for an entire rocket motor

@BrandonEnright OIC... Well, I have to agree that my handwriting is horrible too. But, that's not my reason. I was complaining about our system, the rote-learning, memorizing formulas in colleges (it gets worse, when teachers copy-paste from the books that we obtain for reference), etc. Later, I figured out that nothing happens than just me - always complaining. So, I quitted. I got into the things that I like - which is here :D
@ChrisWhite Hunting?

And if not a rocket motor, then some subsonic propellant combustion -- so I need implicit schemes and preconditioning cause the surface regression is ~ 1cm/s giving a gas velocity ~3m/s and I can't be stuck at the acoustic time step

user54412
@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut for bugs - in my code

Oh that :)

user54412
and in my adviser's code :P

5:34 PM
@ChrisWhite Did you finally settle on a topic?

@ChrisWhite Isn't it Eve's code now ;)

@tpg2114 General relativistic MHD with radiative transfer, to study actively accreting black holes

user54412
@KyleKanos Actually, I think this bug was inherited long ago from Pluto

So it's Andrea's fault?

user54412
I'll refrain from naming names ;P

Also, Pluto is older than Athena? I thought Athena came first...

Annnd I'm lost

I don't really know the history, but Athena uses routines from Pluto (and Echo if the Pluto ones fail) to estimate maximum signal speeds in the first step of its Riemann solvers

@tpg2114 Athena & Pluto are MHD codes. Eve & Andrea are people who have worked on/developed the codes
@ChrisWhite I see. I guess I hadn't looked that deeply at the numerics of either (I have both) to notice the similarities

Got it -- we use state names to differentiate our code versions

Okay, time for bed. C'yall later :)

You keep weird hours.... :D

I should be off too, see you later

IT guys just came in with new monitors so now I am upgraded

OoOoO, the defender of the realm hat is sweet!

@KyleKanos What sort of breakdown do you have for flags? I so rarely see a reason to flag but I feel like I'm in the minority in that regard.
