@aperspicaciouslycuriousmind That sounds hurtful
@RegDwigнt I guess they're protesting exactly that by saying they do matter
Whatever. AFAICT one side is being extreme and whataboutisming the other, and the other side is also being extreme and whataboutisming
Logic and reason kaput

@SmokeDetector I never understood what these sort of homework questions aim to achieve
Directly making sense of the bloody sentence should suffice in most cases to understand what to use; you don't need some bullshit prescription that "use 'should have been' when things should have been"

A: Looking for an appropriate English name to replace my Chinese name

tchristI don’t know what your Chinese name is whether using Chinese characters or in the Pinyin alphabet that works better for Western readers, but you need to know something very important about our culture: English names almost never "mean" something the way Chinese names do, like how 偉 wěi means “gre...

As any programmer or marketing person knows, choosing good names is hard. :)

@tchrist I think he should at least provide the Chinese characters themselves and not just their pronunciation if he wanted an answer.

Can I say Thanks for watching by John?

8:19 PM
Anyone?
Like Robusto
Thanks for watching by John or from John?

I don't know what you intend to say with that.

Like Greetings from / by
If I teel you HELLO, this is a greeting by me
I mean

You don't need to say it's "by" you. People will know that.

Yes, but John is not me

You could say "Greetings from [name]" if you're writing a postcard or something similar.

8:23 PM
So I want to say "John thanks you to have watched the video"

John thanks you for watching the video.
"Thanks for watching the video!" —John
Those will work.

Mmm

@RegDwigнt: What's being said in this video? I'm assuming it's Russian, but if it's not, never mind.

8:36 PM
@tchrist The flip side of that is that names don't matter much. The person or product involved makes the name mean something, not the other way around.
No name will by itself rescue a rubbish product or a stupid human.

@Robusto "Officer Dobrynin, show your papers please". The hamster then seems to be basically laughing incontrollably, but then you realize that what it's actually doing is record whatever sound it picks up and then play it back distorted. So it basically says back "officer Dobrynin, show your papers please" but in a high-pitched chipmunk voice.
It does take just that couple seconds to actually dawn on you. I was like meh at first, but then started laughing incontrollably much like the driver does in the video.

@RegDwigнt Thanks. Pretty much what I thought (what else is a cop going to say?) but good to have it confirmed.
@RegDwigнt Yeah, I figured out that part.
Without even knowing what was said.

The officer then basically repeats the same thing, officer suchandsuch, papers please. but then the funniest bit is when he leans over and looks at the hamster. His choice of words then only adds to the hilarity.
Basically he says, ah, is it the hamster talking now.

haha

And then at the end he just says, everything fine, here's your papers.

Perfect end to a perfect traffic stop.

> This appears in cross-tabulated data. We split the nation's counties into four equal-sized groups, or quartiles, from those with the most COVID-19 cases to those with the fewest. Among registered voters living in counties with the most cases, Biden leads Trump by 72-24%. In the second-highest quartile, it's 62-35%. In the third quartile, results flip, 53-41%, Trump-Biden. And in the quartile with the fewest cases, it's 60-38%, Trump-Biden.

Part of this reflects that fact that there are more Democrats in harder-hit counties and more Republicans in counties with fewer cases. As noted, howe

I don't understand how all those people who have to coverfire from nightfall to daybreak are going to be able to see the wolves in the fold stealing their lambs.
