Q: Term for competition where time difference of two rounds should be zero

MichaelThere is a type of competition where you walk or run (or even cycle) two rounds in a predefined course, and the purpose is to use the exact same time in both rounds. lightweaverIs there a word or phrase (preferably one that functions as verb) to describe what you're doing when you solve a problem mainly by trying this and that until you finally hit upon the solution when you're supposed to solve it methodically? Q: A single word for “one who boasts about knowing or dating famous people”

christoIf I am not wrong, I once encountered a British word used (in slang i suppose) to describe a person who boasts about going out, knowing or dating famous people. Does it exist? In this case, is it common? Thank you.

@RegDwigнt I took your advice and finally updated my Flickr page with some pictures of my recent builds.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 there's no link to your Flickr on your YouTube.
Fix that, mate.
Meanwhile, guys, forget SWRs. I found an all-new gold mine.

Q: Can a sentence start with "The highest"

karacaCan a sentence start with "The highest" in an academic paper. It sounds a bit strange. My original sentence is " When the specificity values of the devices were evaluated, the highest specificity value was obtained..." I want to reduce word count. So, I want to write this sentence "The highest s...

There we go.
I propose a new category, Sentence Start Requests.
Can a sentence start with "The car"?
Can a sentence start with "Yesterday I"?
I'm not posting more examples, so you don't steal. I want to keep them all to myself.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 my point of wording it that way was not "gimme linky", but more like "give linky to everyone".
Cross-promotion.
@RegDwigнt ha, as if anyone visits my Youtube channel
Well. It tells you if they do.
There's stats at the top.
And now that I'll be rich and famous, and you're linked from the front page of my channel, who knows.
Anyway. I forgot my Yahoo password many years ago, so I can only look at your stuff but I can't login to Flickr to upvote it.
There are many many Lego builders on Flickr, I'm a little surprised you're not active there
14:59
What are you on about. I am.
I have posted everything I ever built on Flickr.
All five photos, like.
Also, even though I forgot Flickr existed years ago, every time I log in to my gmail, there's a couple messages from Flickr users gushing over the five photos that I have there.
So yeah Mr Shiny, five photos is enough, and then you can go do something else for a decade.
Srsly tho, back in the day I didn't have a camera. So I had to borrow one every time I wanted to take a picture of anything.
Everything I'm filming and uploading now, could've existed for years. But I was never in a hurry. Still ain't.
@tchrist oh that's a good one, I'll add it to my list. "Can a sentence start with ◇?"
Well I don't just mean posting. I mean joining various Lego-related Flickr groups, taking part in discussions, etc.
I thought that was tchrist's surprised face, surprised you didn't own a camera
Discussions on the Internet lol. What are you smoking, dude. And no, I don't want to discuss that.
I'm Canadian, it's legal. soon.
15:08
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 he knows a thousand more fitting Unicodes for that, and he has every single one of them right at his fingertips.
I am like in a million flickr groups, I believe?
I am even in a few on whatsthething.
Oh yeah, DeviantArt.
That crapfest.
I'm on everything everywhere, mate.
And like, who cares. I know a handful people who care about my shit, they don't care where the fuck I'm at. They'll find me wherever. And then there's the billions of people who don't care about my shit, and again, those definitely don't care where the fuck I'm at.
There was a time I was all over BrickSet and Bricklink and Flickr and Rebrickable and MOCpages and DeviantArt and Reddit. All at once. Painstakingly learning the intricacies of each. It's not worth it.
Yeah you only really need one or two
These days I'll just throw whatever at whatever wall I'm passing that moment, and hey presto, now I can do something else.
I never even check back to see how it fared. I never read comments. I don't care.
Hit and run. That's the tactic I originally came up on Reddit like maybe ten years ago now.
well, my Lug is officially housed on Flickr, so I need a Flickr account for that, which is the only reason I have anything there. But since I'm there, I may as well take part.
Just post your thing, say your thing, make your point clear, and then piss off. There's no point in following up. Especially not on the Internet. I've said my thing. I don't care what you have to say about my thing.
That's my attitude. It started on Reddit but I subsequently applied it to everything else.
YouTube, ELU, everything.
Oh yes.
15:17
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 yeah I need to contact my LUG about my sticker for the VIP card. The year's almost over and I still haven't asked.
@tchrist oh I can imagine it must be orders of magnitude worse for you. Like, people actually know you and shit. You must be getting a trillion million comments on every byte you post.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I'm Coloradanian. It’s been legal lo these five years, and commonplace lo these five centuries. That doesn't mean I want somebody to stick me in their pipe and smoke me.
@RegDwigнt Every single thing I say spawns more people saying more things. It's a breeder reactor.
At that point I'd not even bother with the Internet.
I'd just write physical books.
Oh wait...
Meanwhile, the comment scourge on ELU is second only to the SWTF on ELU.
Well here's one person who will stop breeding more things into your face.
Got a bus to catch. Might molest you more later but not now.
Oh and there's Mitch.
How fitting in every particular.
Every single thing I say just makes people sigh
15:22
Drive safely. Or ride.
sneezes
bless you
@Mitch spits
also spits into hand
shakes hand firmly
I prefer that way better than cutting your hands. mixing blood is way less hygienic.
