12:22 AM
@KitZ.Fox I've tried to explain some of my thoughts here:
0
Q: Should the question about "I am [who/whom] G-d made me" be reopened?

sumelicThis question ("I am [who/whom] G-d made me") was marked as a duplicate of these questions ("What’s the rule for using “who” and “whom” correctly?", "When to use what or who"), but I don't think either of these answers the question. I saw a post from a moderator that mentioned there are some oth...

@Cerberus "Noun adjective" contains a noun adjective. :) And not being entirely unacquainted with that kind of discourse, to me the hash() function sounds smoother than the function hash(), which sounds bumpy and uneasy.

2:19 AM
(Well, my background is not so much of programming than of math and physics)

2:32 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 No written or spoken material is elegant in and of itself. The customary practice dictates (some of?) the criteria for aesthetic assessment in a particular discourse or context. So, technical prose can be elegant.

@Færd Ding!
I was wondering when he would notice...
By the way, it is less ugly already if you write "the hash function".

@Cerberus I was talking with tchrist the other day, and we were wondering why the assonance of Spanish differs greatly from French and Italian, and English. Does it have to do with how Latin was spoken? Let me find the transcript.
Jul 9 at 4:33, by tchrist
I don't know really. French also dropped assonant rhyme and went with the Italian style.

@sumelic Thanks for posting that.
So, the question of the day is, what shall we do for EL&U's birthday this year?
She will be six years old on 5 Aug.

1:17 PM
We should edit all the questions so that they have a party hat in them.

Hahaha
I was contemplating proposing a plan to take our most common questions and making a rewrite effort. Make the best canonical questions with a couple of really solid detailed answers on each, maybe one prescriptive and one descriptive, and then use those as the ones to close dupes against.
But party hats is funner.

1:38 PM
So question: if one looks at a group of people, say, Polynesians, over the last 200 years and concludes that they are all (or almost all) this or that, then one makes a movie with a Polynesian character who is not this or that, would you say the movie maker is negatively stereotyping?

Thank you @Ste. have you any materiel's to learn English quickly?. If you have means please send to my mail id(veerrun@gmail.com) — Vinothkumar 3 hours ago
Oh Kumar I'll send you some materiel's alright...

@KitZ.Fox The cake is a lie

@RegDwigнt Yo! How are things?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 it's racist if it is 1) mean-spirited and 2) from a power group about a non power group, 3) supposed to be about the whole group, whether it is the case for most of the group or not.

@Mitch Okay so more context: Disney is making a movie about Polynesians. One of the characters is "Maui", a god (or demi-god) who supposedly created Hawaii. He's depicted as very large.

1:50 PM
that's a little loose. saying good things can seem racist because they might be patronizing.

People are upset that he's large.
> Jenny Salesa from the New Zealand Parliament had this to say:

When we look at photos of Polynesian men and women from the last 100 to 200 years, most of our people were not overweight, and this negative stereotype of Maui is just not acceptable.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 'Studies have been done' on some tahitian islands that those with native polynesian background have a significantly higher incidence of obesity than Indian immigrants on those islands.

@Mitch really?

supposedly very different diets.
really

In case you didn't know, that's Maui on the right.

1:53 PM
are there other polynesians in the movie that are not so large?

well, I suppose not the one one the left.

user208178
Howdy!

hey!
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 but that study is not to say that most are obese, just that many more are than Indians. relative rather than absolute. I have no idea of the absolute percentage.

1:57 PM
Like when you step off the plane in the American South, it is shockingly noticeable how many people are 'super-sized'.

That's the only scene I could find from the movie that shows someone other than Maui and Moana

It's like an extremely literal 'big man'. Like Abraracourcix, the village chieftain in Asterix who was a big man (with short arms, haha french pun)

heh, I never noticed that one

But your real question is, is that person justified in calling racism.

well, not "racism", "stereotyping"

2:00 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I had it spelled out for me. literally.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 ...
there's a difference, but I don't think it matters what it's called.
hm.. maybe it does.

I guess a stereotype can exist that's completely false and has no bearing on any reality.
As opposed to stereotypes that are over-generalizations of actual observed things.
So I suppose that answers my question
gives self checkmark and +15 points
Next question: is there a stereotype of Polynesians being fat?
Other question: doesn't it just look like Maui is a big strong guy drawn in a cartoony style?
He looks like a bodybuilder who hasn't been doing the pre-photo-op diet
You know how they will dramatically lower their body fat and water content just before a show, so that they look more muscly? But on normal days they look less muscly, like Maui does in that pic?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 them things is good, just saw the LEGO Disney Castle earlier today.

@RegDwigнt So is it mostly light bley and tan, with dark blue highlights?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes.

On the outside, yes.

2:08 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes.

@RegDwigнt The official pic makes the bley look more blue than normal

On the inside, lots of brown and magenta and dark flesh and lilac and teal.

@RegDwigнt I don't think it will fit within my budget.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 it will fit within my budget but not within my house.

damn, brown unikitty tails?! reconsiders budget and life choices

2:10 PM
Luckily, it's a castle, so I am literally building more room to store LEGO in...

I am considering the updated vw beetle though.

Some golden ninjago helmet horns, too.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 no questions about that one. A day-one must-have.
As is the Technic Porsche.

@RegDwigнt It depends on which shade of azure it ends up being. Again I'm having trouble telling from the photos.

Which is gigantic, BTW. Just so you know. It's like five times the size you imagine it to be.

@RegDwigнt I am not getting into technic. That rabbit hole is too deep.
If I do get into it, it will be with a motorized set.

2:12 PM
But that rabbit hole has seventeen functions! And lights!

friggin rabbits.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 shoulda got yourself that excavator, then.
That them released four years ago.

@RegDwigнt still might. again, budgetary priorities. I'm buying a ton of stuff from LugBulk this year.

Still haven't built the limited-edition Crawler, though. Can't say if it's even better still.

How is that even possible?

2:13 PM
Oh, and the Volvo front loader is motorized, too. Excellent set. But not quite as tightly packed as the excavator.

I have the Brick Bank sitting here, unopened.

I am looking forward to the Klaas tractor. I've been told it has mind-numbing functions.

I can't imagine having unbuilt Lego kits.

@RegDwigнt Oh I think that's the one I was thinking of.

I've only seen the rotating cabin so far.

2:15 PM
@KitZ.Fox I have 52 unopened sets. Most of them are little freebie polybag sets though.

faints

No idea where to put the Bucket Wheel Excavator, either.
Like, it needs a room of its own.

@KitZ.Fox And some of them are future birthday gifts for children.

Hmm, OK. That I can see.
Oh, I have a kid story to share.
I just put it on my FB wall.

So a kid, a priest, and a rabbi walk into a bar...
Er. Um.
And the barman says, sorry, we only serve miners.

2:18 PM
haha
My eldest lost a tooth last night while my husband and I weren't home.

Clearly the job of that Disney fairy.

He told Gramma he was going to do a little experiment - he asked her not to tell us, so that he could figure out if we were the tooth fairy.

So instead you hired Jessica Biehl on short notice.

She did tell us, and we let him in on the secret this morning. We told him we were proud of his research plan.

Oh.

2:21 PM
It was very clever.

But my plan involved Jessica Biehl...

Um, but why?

I dunno. I'm told she's all the rage over yonder in them US. Like them tooth fairies.
Nobody has ever heard of either outside of the States.

I don't keep up with popular culture.

user208178
nice, everyone is here.

2:23 PM
Neither do I, and even less so with unpopular culture such as culture limited to just one country.
Basically I'm just talking shit, for this is the Internet, and it's expected of me.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 So anyway. I keep buying like three dozen sets at AFOL day every three months, but I've not even started opening any of the sets from last year. I might well have more unopened than opened sets by now, but I'm too afraid to check for sure.

@RegDwigнt yeah your AFOL day is better than ours. We only get 15% off the regular sets, all the good sets are excluded. All the modulars, all the D2C, exclusives, etc. excluded.
The only thing I do on AFOL day is fill a pick-a-brick cup or two.

I know, right.
You keep complaining, and rightfully so.
The last couple AFOL days, off the top of my head, I got the Avengers Helicarrier, the Ghostbusters HQ, the Simpsons house and the Kwik-E-Mart, the Temple of Airjitzu, the Heartlake Grand Hotel, all the modular buildings, the Mercedes-Benz truck and all the other flagship technic sets -- and all of these are still sitting unopened.

I'm just envious. Considering moving to Europe.

That's like 35k parts just in these larger sets.

2:32 PM
Yeah.
Like, remember I complained about not having room when Sopwith Camel came out.

Of those I have only the Ghostbusters HQ and the last three modulars, all but the bank are built.
Yeah you need a bigger place.
I am considering expanding my house so that there's more room for Lego.

And since the Sopwith Camel I still somehow managed to build the Sydney Opera House and a couple modulars and the Slave I and the Ferris wheel. You can imagine how much I should be complaining now.
And I still have the Ewok village unbuilt, too. And then that entire list above. And now they tell me they have a Big Ben and a Disney Castle and a Porsche the size of an actual Porsche and a bucket wheel excavator the size of an actual bucket wheel excavator. WTF.
This is madness.
Madness? Next up they tell me they have a 1:1 replica of Sparta.

Tell you what. Ship a couple of those over here, I'll build them for you. Help you out, you know. Anything for a friend.

Well yeah we've been there. Shipping is like 100 bucks a gram either way.
Cuz reasons.
So they can coerce us into signing all those ridiculous SEPAs and TIPPs and WHATNOTs.
It'd be actually cheaper for you to build and ship me a new house.

It'd be even cheaper for me to just buy one already built over there

2:38 PM
Hey here's an idea. You ship me the house, I put all my LEGO in it and ship it right back at you.
We will save millions!

Wow! It'll be like printing money.

YES.
OMG OMG. We so clever. Dude.
Totally a loophole. Those suckers can suck it lol.

That's what suckers do. all day.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Well they should be damn thankful we don't suck, then. More left for them.

2:41 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 but I don't know if that was an attempt to give evidence for the stereotype, or if that stereotype is being created now because of that paper.

@Mitch Haha, I didn't know America was an island now.
Oh well, I guess if you teach creationism in schools you might as well teach that.

How did Europeans get so enlightened?

We invented the light bulb, that's how.
And the airplane, and the radio, and the grammophone.

haha

Everything else was invented by the Chinese, sadly. But the point is, Americans never invented anything.
@KitZ.Fox you laugh, but it is true.

2:43 PM
@Mitch huh, interesting.

We invented dental care and manners.

@Mitch you don't need evidence for a stereotype. A stereotype by definition only comes into existence because there was evidence in the first place.

We invented 'Bless your heart' to mean 'Your baby is ugly'

There is no stereotype "all Chinese are blond".

@RegDwigнt tell that to Mr S. Or rather, Mr S just told you
@RegDwigнt But to your point, goddam those blond chinese.
with their blond ways.
they probably couldn't get butter to melt in their mouths.

2:46 PM
actually.

well, margarine

In Chinese culture, blond people have certain powers. Or something.
Mr. Shiny would know.

I can't believe it's not canned cheese.

Oh, believe it.

eats parmeggiano reggiano Nope. Nowhere near. Total crap.
moves to America
Now where's my dental care and ugly baby.

2:48 PM
You can have your ugly baby anywhere.
Bless your heart!

You see, the US may have invented dental care and manners.
But we then invented *free* dental care and *good* manners.

I see no evidence of that.

See, that's because you've not invented eye doctors.

whoa whoa whoa! what's with this 'good manners' stuff?

We have invented free eye doctors, and are using them to the best of results. Come on over.
@Mitch who the fuck asked you?

2:51 PM
I just heard that students in Europe get in a lot of student loan debt too. NOt as bad as the US but still substantial.

Anyway, as you all understand by "we" I mean them damn Europeans while I, as you all know, am, while technically from the very heart of Europe, politically the whole world's been telling me not from Europe at all, so what do I know. Fuck everyone. I'm great, that shall suffice.

@RegDwigнt I don't think you get it. I'm asking you. You obviously didn't read the manners book. You're taking your free eyes for granted
@RegDwigнt You're as great as a polynesian.

@Mitch never seen a single student that got into any loan at all. It's optional, you know. Harvard, on the other hand, won't tell you, pay us or pay us not, your choice.

Oh! He wears as much eyeliner as Avril Lavigne. The similarities might end there...or might not.
@RegDwigнt that's better than most here, where it's just 'pay'

I've studied not one but three things. All of them for free. Never been a penny in the red my whole life. Don't know what it is, don't want to find out. And everyone around me seems to be exactly the same.
Coincidentally, absolutely no one has a credit card. Just as a quick reminder.
We've been over this many times before.
@Mitch he is from the British Empire, just like Avril.
Coincidence????
Has anyone ever seen Tim Minchin and Avril Lavigne in the same room?????????

2:59 PM
@RegDwigнt well, the article I read mentioned Sweden and England as places where one might need student loans, but they also mentioned that the payment plan was more lenient than the US. So maybe in the countries you studied in had that much better a system (I thought all european countries acted like yours re not having student payment, the article was new to me)
@RegDwigнt I've never seen either in a room at all.

Meh, I don't know anything about England. They're not even in the EU. But historically that's where you got your retarded system from in the first place, so I wouldn't be surprised.
@Mitch the plot thickens.
Could they both be Shrödinger's Cat?

@RegDwigнt like left over oatmeal

OMG OMG. In that very video, Tim Minchin says "no gruel tonight".
WTF. This chatroom is an inside job. Wake up sheeple.

@KitZ.Fox I've never heard of this.

So I'll be calling it a day, then. See you again once the new house Mr Shiny ships to me is connected to the Internet.
@KitZ.Fox why, blond people have the superpower of not being Chinese. And not just in Chinese culture, but in all cultures!
Power to the blond people!
And fuck the polis for Rodney King.

3:24 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It depends.
If the maker suggests that all Polynesians are like that, it would be bad.
But you can't judge cultural expressions without context.
Intention is an important part of that.
I think some more respect for individual freedom of expression is in order.

Was watching Old Yeller clips, when I stumbled upon this:
Once I was attacked by a cat at school and received medical care afterwards. Now it's occurring to me that how serious these incidents might turn into.
TL;DW: What I got from the video (and haven't fact-checked yet) was that the rabies virus goes to your nerve center and destroys the body from there.
After you're bitten by a rabid animal, you either have been vaccinated, are getting medication right away, or going to wait for the first symptoms of the disease to start showing. If the latter, you're doomed to a definite agonizing death within the next several days (as are tens of thousands of people every year). No one has survived that stage.
... Except for a 15-year-old girl, whose doctor decided to shield her from her infected brain by shutting it off through in an induced coma, and wait for the body's immune system to wake up and fight against the virus. At least this is the doctor's account of the treatment. The girl survived. A Thai man received the same treatment and died.

@Færd yeah Rabies is 100% fatal, basically

And yet there are about 50,000 people dying from it every year.
A large number to experiment on.

3:40 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It's in the opera
The White-Haired Girl (Chinese: 白毛女; pinyin: Bái Máo Nǚ) is a Chinese opera, ballet, (later adapted to Beijing Opera and a film) by Yan Jinxuan to a Chinese libretto by He Jingzhi and Ding Yi. The first opera performance was in 1945, with Wang Kun playing the lead role. The film was made in 1950. The first Peking opera performance was in 1958. The first ballet performance was by Shanghai Dance Academy, Shanghai in 1965. It has also been performed by the noted soprano Guo Lanying. The opera is based on legends circulating in the border region of Shanxi, Chahar and Hebei, describing the misery suffered...

@Færd What do you mean? that they should be used to try to test new cures?
The problem is most of those people are in poor places and the reason they die is because they don't get the normal treatment after an animal bite.

@Mitch But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao, You aren't going to make it with anyone anyhow.

@MετάEd What about his mom? I think you're overgeneralizing.

But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao’s mom, You aren't going to make it with anyone anyhow.

4:00 PM
Thank you for your correction.

2 hours later…
5:32 PM
@KitZ.Fox Tried pinging you in Overlook. we're doing an exercise now if you want to join.

1 hour later…
6:40 PM
@Mitch Yeah, that's what I was thinking of. There's a story/myth with a white-haired goddess/immortal.

Someone really wants to pick a fight with me.
And if they can't have a fight with me, then maybe they can have someone else have a fight with me. :-)

Who? Is it me?

Who? Is it me?

I think I know who it is, judging by the pings

Like I could figure it out in this pile of flags.

6:54 PM
@KitZ.Fox If it's anything like the review queue, I get that ...

Well, our flag queue has exploded in the last couple of months, meaning we're going to need more hands soon.

Yes, I thought you'd be here
I haven't flagged any of your comments MetaEd

Thank you.

And I see Mr Shiny and New is all too aware of the continual, non-stop comments that metaEd has been posting
I am now asking you to decease. And take the matter up with meta

@KitZ.Fox The secret power? peroxide

6:58 PM
I am TIRED of defending my right to post a question.

@MετάEd It's me.

@Mitch You guessed it. Put 'em up.

how dare you! doggy paddle fights
Wait! a battle of wits! You sir are a festering sore on the inner ear carbuncle of life.

MετάEd has just as much right to comment on why he feels the question ought to be closed or migrated as Mari-Lou A does to post the question. If y'all want to discuss it beyond what I've left in the commentary, then take it to Meta.
Otherwise, I suggest you drop it.

@Mitch My other car is a broom.

7:00 PM
Dang it, I already used 'how dare you'. That's all I got.

@Mitch "have at you"?
@Mitch I thought it was Calgon.

@Mari-LouA Since this is the ELU room, I'm going to suggest that decease is probably not the word you wanted there :p

I don't think I've been asked to decease before. I'm going to assume that's not a death threat.
jinx

Can you read the Italian?

7:16 PM
No.
hopefully it doesn't say anything bad.

I visit this room once in every two weeks or so. Very difficult to read what's going on.

@Rathony I hope you're not disappointed that it isn't a coherent narrative.
AIEEE! A BALROG HAS COME! Now that I have your attention, SQUIRREL!

@MετάEd Well, I am not sure if I am capable of telling what is coherent from what is not.

@Rathony You fit right in.

@MετάEd Actually it's been a couple of months since I last chatted in this room. Nobody wants to talk to me.
:-)
I just read @KitZ.Fox's "our flag queue has exploded in the last couple of months, meaning we're going to need more hands soon."
Sorry, almost all the flags are mine.
@MετάEd What does "I am now asking you to decease. And take the matter up with meta" mean?
@Mitch Hello, Mitch.

7:29 PM
@Rathony I assume what was meant was "cease and desist".

@MετάEd Did you offend her as I did?

But if you want to know you'd have to ask MLA.

Nope. I don't have to ask. I think I know.

@Rathony Certainly not on purpose. But it seems plain that I did.

@MετάEd Well, who else doesn't?

7:31 PM
I have no way of comparing with whatever happened between the two of you, because I don't know about it.

Such a long history.

@Rathony Oh. I think people do offend others on purpose. And then there are people who get offended on purpose.

@MετάEd I don't know.

@Rathony This room used to be called "The Incomprehensible Room", and for good reason
now we hate fun so it has a boring name and tagline

Q: Why do I dislike Chat so much?

Mari-Lou A Because chat is the place where members can sneer behind your back. Chat is the place where members can take delight in telling others that someone (me) is looking to pick a fight. Because chat is the place where members use code such as peroxide blonde instead of using your proper username. B...

Facepalm

7:43 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Ni Hao Ma. Long time no talk.
@MετάEd I have never been offended by you. Should I say thank you?
I voted to close the question.

7:58 PM
@KitZ.Fox no no that's the secret powder. You meant that place that kids go to hide when their parents get sick and die.
@Rathony Our job is done.
@Rathony hey!

@Mitch Sorry, I don't get it.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Oh. I hadn't noticed. I think that must be pretty obvious (that I hadn't noticed)
Fun time over

@Rathony Maybe thank yourself ;-)

@MετάEd I always thank myself when I run 20 miles without drinking a drop of water. :-)

@Rathony You said 'hello', I responded 'hey!', an exchange of salutations. It's a language thing.

8:03 PM
@Mitch What about "our job is done"?

@Rathony I thank myself when I walk 5 feet to get a drink of water.
@Rathony Oh. You should make the link correspond to the line you want me to refer to.

@Mitch I hate this room.

@Rathony 'Our job is done' makes it sound like we are intentionally trying to not make sense (what you said first). I am playing along with your assumption.
@Rathony It's the wordst

@Mitch Hmm... Let me come back after reading a grammar book for a while.

Are you implying grammar books are worse than this room, 'cause that's not the case.

8:07 PM
@Rathony That might help. Probably not here, but it might help elsewhere.
@TIPS Depends on the language.

@TIPS Well, I am implying I am not there yet to join this chat room.

user208178
@Rathony Hello Rathony. Why do you hate this room?

user208178
This is one of the nicest room with the nicest of people like Mitch and others.

@Rathony Meh, you'll get used to not understanding things @Mitch says soon enough.

@Arrowfar It was a joke.

user208178
8:09 PM
Huh

@TIPS Whoa dude, no names.

@Mitch No, metaEd makes more sense.

Anyway I know I have mishegas on the chainwax.
I mean most everything I say.
Mostly.

Nice talking to you guys. I will be back in two weeks. Take care.

maybe multiple things.

user208178
8:11 PM
See ya!

but I mean all of them
well, maybe I'm kidding
but that just means I mean them at one level but something else at another level.
@Rathony we're just screwing around.
I want to see the comments thread between MLA and MetaEd. Just prurient rubbernecker interest.

user208178
yes, we are mostly just fucking around ;)

whoa dude! a little too anglo saxon there.

*American

user208178
@Mitch sorry! :D

8:16 PM
@TIPS we blame the english

Yeah yeah

doesn't everybody?

I blame the weather.

ooh that's harsh
But not unreasonable

user208178
hot and humid weather makes me crazy.

8:18 PM
OwwK, /me goes to sleep.
Night all \o

user208178
Night!

@Arrowfar how was ramadan this year? Longest days ever! (they'll start getting shorter next year)

user208178
@Mitch yes they were very tough. I skipped some days. I just can't live without drinking water in summers.

user208178
but they say that's what it teaches, patience, abstinence etc. I'm not very religious by the way.

user208178
I'm somewhere in the middle.

user208178
8:25 PM
@Mitch so from the internet and news it seems like there is more racism in the US than in UK. do you agree? or maybe Europeans are just polite?

user208178
Just a thought that popped into my mind. thought I'd ask you.

@Arrowfar I have opinions.
@Arrowfar the US had slavery more recently, and apartheid-style laws in the south, and lots of current implicit real estate segregation and lots of implicit racism (hidden biases).

user208178
I see. yeah I see your point.

But in comparison to Europe, it is socially unacceptable to display racism in the open (that is, I've never (well, maybe never) seen racism in person in the US, but have in Europe.
But I'm not black or latino or foreign or ...) so I'm most likely not going to be the brunt of things (easy for me to not see what is happening to others).
I think the US isn't that great for many people (blacks, etc), but other places it is that much worse.

@Arrowfar It depends on your definition.
@Mitch What have you seen in Europe?
Was it racism or some other form of discrimination?

user208178
@Mitch <nods> also the media magnifies bad stuff.

Hello @Cerberus

types

user208178
@Cerberus I meant in the sense, for example, a black guy can’t sweet talk the police there but a cis white male can. That sort of thing.

user208178
sorry I don't know much about Uk either. Just writing my guesses. correct me if I'm wrong though.

@Cerberus name calling. out loud. in front of other people. both in anger and not in anger/matter of factly.

@Arrowfar From what I hear, the American police are very aggressive, completely unlike the police in northern Europe.

(obviously there are other more pernicious forms of racism, but name calling is pretty observable)

@Mitch Name calling? Like how?

epithets

user208178
@Cerberus yeah. nods

As in, people at the bus stop telling someone "fuck you nigger" to a black man, something like that?
I've never seen or heard that happen, I must say.

@Cerberus having had experience with neither, I can't really say.

Experience?
Surely you've spoken to or observed policemen?
The police are already more aggressive in France compared to northern Europe.
But they're probably much less likely to shoot people.

@Cerberus OK I've never heard that anywhere, but rather 'that person was a goddam X', or in front of a Y 'You know how Y's are'.
@Cerberus lots on TV, few in real life.

@Mitch Hmm I don't think I've ever heard the latter.
