@Cerberus Read all about it here:

1:47 AM
@Robusto Hah! Highly relevant.
Is that your nom de guerre?
How are things?

2:38 AM
What are you doing in here? @0celo7

@skillpatrol They can't hold me down.

Let's go old school
whoops wrong chat

@Cerberus Is what my nom de guerre?
And things are fine. Excellent, in fact.

Hi @Robusto

2:41 AM
Hola, Raiders fan!
What happened to your Warriors?

Vega$ bought them out.

I can almost believe that.
And yet it fell to Cleveland to D up and squelch the Splash Bros.

Gotta run, nice chatting with you again pal :-)

2:55 AM
L8r
Nice to see you @anongoodnurse in here :-)

@skillpatrol Hey! I was just looking something up in the chat record, and apparently I was grilling you. I can't remember how it ended. :)

4 hours later…
6:46 AM
@KitZ.Fox For the record, I am not flagging those LQAs to provoke a moderator election. I am just doing my job as I believe those LQAs should be gone because they don't contribute anything to ELU.
Do we need an election? Yes. Why? Because there are a few mods who are not working including one who is missing. Now, it is not a desirable situation where a spam (oh, yes, not a spam, but an offensive or abusive question) has been left undeleted for 16 hours.
I don't think this is something that should be happening on any community. What would have happened if the same question change active voice into passive voice were posted on other sites such as Meta Stack Exchange? It would have been deleted within an hour. Unfortunately, it took 16 hours on ELU and it was not deleted by mods.

7:41 AM
@Mitch fair point

10:29 AM
does anyone know the term for the phenomenon when any invention/innovation at all makes things better? For example in the workplace.

user208178
10:57 AM
@0celo7 Wat? Never mind I'm mostly just bullshitting in chats.

user208178
well I don't know how to answer your question, really.

user208178
laters

@Lembik that's not a full example.
when someone makes something better, that would be an improvement

11:46 AM
Well, if any change whatsoever would be an improvement, you could call it D:reamy.

12:12 PM
Great feel good song.

@terdon guess which one of that band went on to become a (world?) renowned physicist.

@MattE.Эллен Mr Cox!

:)

althought, Dr. Cox

12:15 PM
Yeah, I'm a big fan of his.
@MattE.Эллен Prof. Cox then, if you like.

I don't call people Dr. and don't insist they call me Dr. and everyone is happy.

fair enough

Big fan of Cox though, his Wonders of the solar system is one of my all time favorite documentaries.
Unfortunate name, but great explainer.

12:18 PM
You'd have to name your daughter Poppy or something though.

I like Scott Bug's Marvels of the Science

Even better, my sister's name is Aliki. If she were ever to marry the good professor and take on his name, she'd be "Aliki Cox". Not quite as good as "Aliki Dick" but close.
@MattE.Эллен I'll look that one up, thanks.

@terdon lol
you can dream!

:)
True though. And true story about Dicks

Jun 3 '14 at 0:21, by terdon
She went to a one man show all about how the actor's life had been so hard because his last name was Dick. Among other things, he said, no woman would marry me, because nobody would want to be Mrs Dick. At which point he turnd to my sister and asked her if she would consider it and she got to reply that "certainly not, for then I would be called Aliki Dick."
Ouch. I really dislike that narrator's voice.
That fake dramatic whisper thing he does is getting on my nerves.
But that's pretty good, admittedly :)

I think that's the point :D
@terdon rofl
that's a good come back!

Yeah, I wrote that first comment before he'd gotten into things. Then I was like "Say what? That can't be right" and then, "OK, I know that one isn't right" and then it dawned on me that I was being trolled :)
@MattE.Эллен Yes. One of the all time best lines ever uttered I think. Everything came together to give her the chance and she took it!

1:16 PM
@Mari-LouA Hi! I saw on your profile that you live in Italy and I don't remember the reason why I think you're an English teacher. I'd like to pay a visit to Italy sometime, possibly dwell for a while. And I'm leisurely working my way towards a diploma in English. I was thinking maybe I could teach English as a side job. May I ask you to give me a brief outline of English teaching in Italy? Is there any demand? Is it brimming with too much supply? That kind of stuff, nothing that'd be lengthy or bothersome for you.

@tchrist Oh .. you are a top user in regex tag .. If I knew that, I would asked my regex question from you too, not just English ones ;-)

1 hour later…
2:34 PM
@Rathony We will have an election and it is because we do not have capacity for the current and recent increase in mod work. It has nothing to do with absent moderators. Our capacity has remained roughly the same since the last election in 2012, yet in the last couple of weeks, the mod flag queue has roughly tripled in size. It is beyond your ability alone to have caused that increase.
@Rathony It should not require mod intervention to delete that post.

user208178
@KitZ.Fox how did the load increase in just two weeks?

A few users decided to flag a lot of comments.
Amongst other things.
Probably a badge hunt.

user208178
wow

user208178
i see

@Rathony The number of active mods has absolutely no bearing here. Mods are appointed for life and can choose to step away if they so desire. Elections are called when either SE or the current mods feel that the workload is too high for the currently active mods. Whether there are no inactive mods or 12 inactive mods is completely irrelevant.

2:42 PM
The point for us is our capacity -- how much work can we handle in a day or week.

@KitZ.Fox The review queue has been backing up too. I was guessing high-rep users are on vacation and not running the queue, but so much for that theory.

@Rathony That is a failing of the community. People, obviously, didn't flag it. Spam and offensive flags lead to an automatic deletion. Mods are very very rarely involved in those and if they are, it's a sign that the community isn't doing its job. The vast majority of actions on SE are taken by regular, high rep members, not mods.

@MετάEd Right, same as 10K+ users have capacity and no one is getting into anyone's grill about how there aren't enough of them pulling their weight.

> It's quite a complicated and fascinating process, so imagine I used a really perfect analogy to explain that to you
lol

So. Election. I'm curious when does that start?

2:44 PM
August, most likely.
It's not slated yet.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 :D I quite like all six episodes

I remember the election in 2012, I was thinking there was one in 2014 too.

@MετάEd No, but similar levels of drama.

2:46 PM
Oh right. It's 2016.
Wow, ow, brain realigning.

@terdon Oh, look at you with your fancy posting a useful link. Thank you.

@MετάEd Nya nya nya, you're welcome.

So that increased our capacity some.

Speaking of review queue. It is busting to go past 200.

Q: List of unlinked pages on Stack Exchange sites

BassieHere is a list of special, unlinked pages (they may be linked in questions and answers) on Stack Exchange sites. Most pages listed here are work in progress or legacy. Currently, this list is incomplete. If you know more of them, add them to the answer. Related Hidden features of Stack Exchange...

2:51 PM
@MετάEd We're turning into SO.
hahaha not

Should I write the word of "all" in the end/middle of the sentence?
I reject them all
I reject all of them

The first is more emphatic, both are fine.

@MετάEd If some votes are aging away, I'd just write a meta when I feel like it so everyone attacks the queues.

@TIPS Bookmarked!

2:53 PM
Do I need the word of "the" in this?
Either case1 or case2, or the both
Either case1 or case2, or both of them

@MετάEd ʕ ⊃・ ◡ ・ ʔ⊃︵┻━┻
It's the most useful meta.SE question . . . for entertainment purposes.

@TIPS I could try it, but I suspect meta posts are even less visible to high-rep users than the actual queue in the topbar.

@TIPS Augh! You just gave a link to that page!

@terdon I know the theory based on benevolent dictatorship.

Benevolent what?

2:54 PM
@Mitch And now there goes another two hours, eh?

Don't see how that's really relevant. My point was that whether or not there are currently inactive moderators has no bearing on whether or not new elections are needed.

@MετάEd Now I know what the number means. It is a review queue number!

@MετάEd That's more or less true, but there is no choice.

@terdon That's your opinion. My opinion differs.

@TIPS no, I have discipline. I instead spent my 2 hours on youtube/an actual site called 'clickbait'.

2:56 PM
@Mitch Noice. You're one of the better ones.

@Rathony it's not a question of opinion, that's what I'm trying to tell you. It is simply the way that SE works. My opinion, or yours, has nothing to do with anything.

Most of that time is spent waiting for video ads to load before the real content comes "Hotel mishaps: You'll be shocked at #17"

@terdon We should get candidates to agree to step down after 6-months of absence when we hold a next election. Why is it difficult to step down?

@terdon Especially your opinion. Gah, I figured you would vote for that bastard.

@Rathony Why? What benefit would there be to that?

2:58 PM
@Rathony Why should it be easy to step down?

@Rathony complain on meta

Mods are doing voluntary work. No punishing on voluntary work.

And it is very easy to step down. You basically contact SE and say "Hi, I want to step down".
And the "Hi" is optional, although appreciated.

@terdon Finding "contact us" is sometimes hard enough. :P
I mean, that much scrolling

@TIPS Mods have access to the TL.

2:59 PM
@terdon If you don't have time to log in to spend just 10 minutes per day, 5 days per week, why the hell do you keep your moderatorship?

@terdon Mhm

@Mitch You know I am not that stupid.

@Rathony I understand what you're saying. It does seem crazy to have a 'role' and not exercise its duties. But...

@Rathony Why the hell should you leave it? Maybe you will have time later, or maybe you still have time for a minute every 3 weeks. Why leave? If the site needs more mods, the site can get more mods. There aren't any "slots" here.

@terdon When you have time later, you run for it later.

3:00 PM
@Rathony If you want something to be done about something, complain in the right place. Here your complaints (on this very specific subject) are non-actionable.

@Mitch Well, at least I have audience here.

Anyway, I don't think there's much meat to this discussion. @Rath if you want to take further actions, here are the steps.

@Rathony No. When you have time later, you come and do it. You still haven't explained what benefit you perceive in a mod stepping down. What would change in your opinion?

Now let's talk about clickbaits.

@terdon What benefit does it give when we have a mod missing for 10 months?
Has he been elected for the right not to do anything for 10 months?
What the hell is wrong with just stepping down.

3:02 PM
to continue my but. ...But as others have mentioned this is a volunteer situation, no one is getting paid so no system is losing money on the extra moderators. It may be a little confusing, and not efficient for writing lists of the moderators, but it is not hurting the system to keep them on (maybe they're on a hiatus, or busy at real life jobs or something).

@Rathony You seem to be laboring under a misapprehension. When asking for something to change, the onus is on you to prove that the change is beneficial.

@Rathony How will they do that if they're absent?

@Rathony Yes, talk is also cheap.

@terdon Well, nobody is proving not changing is beneficial, either.
@TIPS They don't have to do it if there is a clause of automatic termination of moderatorship after 6 months of absence.

Seriously?
- I want all the walls painted blue.
- Why?
- Why do you not want to change them? What benefit is there to not changing them?

3:04 PM
@Rathony Why should there be? You can take this up as a proposal on meta.SE to see opinion on it, but I wonder if it'd be a popular one.

You want a change, so you need to demonstrate that a change would be a good thing.

@TIPS Why should there not be?
@TIPS As I said to Mitch, I am not that stupid.

@Rathony Also, since there are many conversations going on here, it would be easier to know what you are referring to if you ping the particular comment, instead of the person in general. I think you know how to do that, and others do do it, so as a courtesy, please click 'reply to this message' when you want to ... reply to a message.

Wait, lemme search. Maybe there's something there already (I remember such thing).

@Rathony Because things are working fine as it is and change is hard, complicated and disrupts the site. There, those are a few reasons. Now, your turn.

3:05 PM
@Rathony So, what do you expect the conclusion to this discussion be?
We gang up and make mods step down?

also it would take non-trivial programming work to add that feature.

@Mitch I hate chat room, too.

@TIPS Man the barricades!

I'm mostly curious. I've heard people on various sites complaining about inactive mods but have yet to hear a single argument explaining why they're a bad thing.

3:07 PM
@terdon So you think it is the best option we have to wait until the missing mod comes back?

@Rathony ?? Reply to a message on a message that you are making a relevant reply to, in order to maintain the thread of discourse for that particular conversation.

What is it called when in a discussion someone insists on proving themselves right without regarding the actual truth? What is that discussion called?

@Færd A before-football-match discussion

@Rathony No. I think the missing mod is completely irrelevant. And I'm honestly trying to understand why you seem to feel otherwise.

3:08 PM
@terdon How long will you wait?

Oct 24 '12 at 17:59, by Mitch
@Robusto man the barricades. light the gasoline doused tires.

@Rathony Until Arthur Paendrag rises.

@Mitch So we double-man the barricades? That's an overkill.

@terdon Then, why do you elect such a person as a mod in the first place?

Since there is no problem to be solved, I have nothing against waiting indefinitely to the non-existing problem's solution.

3:10 PM
@TIPS the mods are big people. need double teaming

I don't watch football very often.

football is overrated.

@terdon That's ridiculous. Did you know the mod will be missing for such a long time when you voted for him?

@terdon Well said.

@Mitch :o

3:10 PM
@Rathony i) because they used to do a great job; ii) because the electorate on ELU, like in real life, consists of idiots iii) because I like pink. Whatever, how is that relevant? They're elected already.

@Mitch That's soccer for you.

@Rathony No. So? Please either give a concrete reason why it would be useful, helpful or otherwise beneficial for a mod to step down.

@terdon So if Trump or Hillary is elected and does nothing for 10 months, it is fine, huh?

@Rathony I'm not sure I understand this line of reasoning. Of course you have no idea what will happen in the future. And yeah people probably wouldn't vote for a person who hasn't been on the site for a while in the past. I can say with great confidence that all of the mods were highly active on this site at the time they were voted in.

@Rath I found a similar suggestion. -12.

3:12 PM
@terdon There's less oxygen up there. Come down and gulp in some air and go back up.

@Rathony Good grief. Look, either give me a reason why this bothers you or shut up about it. Drawing inane comparisons between an online Q&A site and the world's greatest nuclear power is patently absurd.
4

@Mitch Who cares about what they did in the past?

@Rathony Are you essentially arguing that mods with less than a certain amount of activity need to be punished?

Too much heat. I'm out.
o/

@YannisRizos - re: visibility of stats. I'm a volunteer helping out, I don't work in a call-centre. Revealing stats just adds the wrong sort of pressure to keep the numbers high for good appearances. This would affect making quality judgement calls. There are some days when I might have only handled 40 or so flags (I have a target of ~120 to 140 a day) because one or two have caused me to spent 20-30mins to sort out (you know the kind of thing - vote rings, socks identification, responding to mod messages). — Kev Oct 17 '12 at 13:33

@Færd Are you NOT entertained?

@terdon Why do you think the comparison doesn't work? Do you vote for someone who will work? Or do you vote for someone who will be missing for 10 months?

@Rathony you're changing the goal posts. I was responding to why you would vote for some one, and now you've changed it back to removing already elected mods. Keep the argument threads straight.

He doesn't want to have a discussion @Mitch. That would involve actually providing arguments. Apparently, @Rathony just wants to complain and answer questions with questions.

@Rathony They were already elected though. It's done. Maybe they wouldn't get elected again on the same record, but that doesn't matter now. Their position as mod doesn't harm anyone.

3:16 PM
I think this is relevant:

I see the chilli mushrooms have spotted me. A surprise attack is out of the question. I shall have to go for a frontal assault. They're surrounded by a fort of well boiled rice. Ha! This will be easy as pie. The mild chilli powder is no deterrent, and the fortification shall crumble beneath the might of my jaws. The barricades of peppers will be a tasty delight! Mmmmm, I look forward to ripping the tomatoey goodness from them like so much candy floss. ATTACK!

It's not like there is a set number of moderators, and when one steps down an election is held immediately to fill it. This isn't city council or parliament.

I'm going to give it another go.
@Rathony please explain why you think it would be good for inactive mods to step down.

New mods are added whenever there is enough demand for more mods.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Well, nothing harms no one when you don't close quesitons, when you don't answer, when you don't comment, when you don't delete spam.

(those aren't special mod needs)

3:18 PM
@Rathony None of those are a mod's job, no.

@Rathony Mods aren't supposed to do those things.
It's not their job.

(ELU doesn't need more mods to handle those)

@Rathony Please explain how the world is better if an inactive mod loses their mod status. In what precise way does the site improve? The number of active mods doesn't change. The number of questions asked, answered, flagged, closed, deleted, flags answered, etc, doesn't change.

This day is mine!!!

Repeated punctuation mark error.

woo hoo !!!?!???!!!!!

@Mitch good times

an extra round of punctuation for the house!!!

@Mitch No, I'm used to seeing "urgent/urgant" there.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Please explain how the world is better if an active mod stays doing nothing?

@TIPS Hey, I was out!

3:19 PM
@MattE.Эллен Peppers are the best.
@TIPS Oh.

@Færd The world needs you

@Rathony The number of inactive mods is 100% completely irrelevant. As they are inactive, they have zero effect on anything.

You're the @Færd the world deserves, but doesn't need right now.

@TIPS and no, when they say shut up and stuff, I'm less inclined to be entertained.

@Rathony OK. Stop doing that. If you want a change, you need to defend the change and show how it would be better.

3:21 PM
Well. this argument is going round a big hole of nothing. time to call it quits, folks

user208178
<makes popcorn>

@Rathony But also terdon has asked you several times to explain why you think it is an improvement, and now I have too, and you just deflect the question. It doesn't seem like you want to answer? I can see you feel strongly about this, but you're not making yourself understood very well.

@TIPS Should I be flattered or ashamed?

@MattE.Эллен You're telling me you don't wait however long it is watching the little vortex spin and spin until all the water is drained out of the bathtub/sink/toilet/whatever?

@terdon Well, how can I explain to the people who thinks doing nothing is equivalent to doing their job?

3:22 PM
wonders if I've said too much
@Rathony Yes, it's weird.

We need to move on to a new topic.

But there are other things to worry about.
like the water in Matt's bathtub

@Færd Are you the same kind of person that stops a street quarrel?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Why is doing nothing equivalent of doing their job?

@Færd Ashattered
@Rathony It's not their 'job'.

3:23 PM
@Mitch yes. I bought drain unblocker earlier
I need to fish the hair out of the plug hole first, though

@MattE.Эллен Here's one: in a language continuum, like Arabic in northern Africa, or Germany following the line from Vienna, Austria all the way to Amsterdam Netherlands...

let me guess...

@Rathony What job? There is no job. These are people who volunteered to do a largely unpleasant and mostly thankless activity. They are volunteers and can spend as much or as little time as they choose on it.

@Rathony 1. It's not equivalent. 2. It's not a job, it's volunteer work. 3. The fact that they do little or nothing doesn't matter at all, others are also doing the work. 4. I'm not posting anything else about this as our mod has asked us to change the topic.

@TIPS Well, exactly, why do they try to stick to it for their life?

3:24 PM
is it that really neighbors can understand the next door language because it is similar? ...

or that they're all bilingual?

Or is it that both neighbors are bilingual in the other language?

I read your tweet :D

@Mitch I only do that the first 10 times every hour. Am I a nice guy?

This room was placed in timeout for 1 minute; the topic of this room is "For English language enthusiasts; meta.english.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/chat-faq"; - conversation should be limited to that topic.

wonders if he can post in a timeout

@MattE.Эллен Nice, the numbers pierced my face.
Also the timeout went off.
@Færd Unfortunately no.

3:26 PM
huh

i. are the neighbors mutually intelligible because...

that was a quick minute

Nice talking to you. I am out.

dang it... you rebooted my brain

Who else spent the whole minute looking at the numbers?

3:27 PM
@TIPS non sequitur or rather non te sequito, if that's the word for it.

This is what I asked about, pretty on-topic, but no one answered. What is this type of conversation/discussion called? :
12 mins ago, by terdon
He doesn't want to have a discussion @Mitch. That would involve actually providing arguments. Apparently, @Rathony just wants to complain and answer questions with questions.
(btw, I guess he's a she)

@TIPS Me!! kind of like a vortex of water draining out of... wait this sounds so familiar.

@Færd Are you looking for a ... word for this? A single one?

Yes.

3:29 PM
@terdon haha but that's just poking the bear.

dammit

I hate it when it does that.

@Færd argument? heated argument? ganging up?

More so when it's a large XKCD onebox.
Ruins the whole joke.

@Mitch I would honestly like to hear their reasoning if they ever get round to explaining it.

3:30 PM
I missed it. I was looking at numbers

@Færd Cat-fight
You can't deny it's one word because it's separated by a hyphen. (ノ^◡^)ノ︵ ┻━┻

@Mitch I guess it's hard to say. I would guess a mix. like there is probably a higher amount of borrowing, but also the languages must be more like the non-border dialects than the cross border language

@terdon I think you're being disingenuous. It's pretty obvious that in most real world circumstances that roles that are expected to do things should be recycled (a time limit, or re-election refilling do-nothing spaces). But Rathony doesn't get it that this is not the real world

@Mitch Of course. In the real world, I would agree 100%. I'm trying to understand the perceived benefit here.
Or anywhere else, including the fabled real world, where i) there are unlimited "slots" to take up the slack; ii) the people in office are not getting paid or otherwise wasting public funds/unicorns and iii) where the people in question are volunteers.

@TIPS Isn't that for women? Considered offensive maybe?

3:34 PM
I was joking

@Færd Yes and yes.

@MattE.Эллен I'm guessing that the defintiion of language continuum would preclude the bilingual option, but I think that would be hard to test "Do you understand what this guy is saying?" "Yes" "But is it because he talks like you but a little funny or because you've been around people like that for a while?" "Hunh? I don't know? He just talks funny."

@Mitch Thanks. I want something that'd connote the disinterest in the truth (and interest in proving self) of one or more legs of the argument. Those don't I think.

@terdon I don't think 'cat-fight' is necessarily gendered, but it does have some connotations.

It doesn't have to be offensive, but you have to work real hard to make sure it isn't. And you'll probably fail.

3:36 PM
:D

Ungendered though? Really? It would always imply two women fighting for me.

Fighting for you?

@Færd oh right, yes, 'disinterest in the truth', arguing for arguments sake (I think everyone here involved was interested in the truth, but it still got too heated)

@Færd he is very handsome

@terdon so catty.
chatty cathy.

3:37 PM
@MattE.Эллен I bet.

@MattE.Эллен Hey man, I can't help it. I've tried everything.

i can't tell if that's offensive.
probably is.

@Mitch Thanks.

@terdon "You're too pretty. Girls are intimidated by that. You need a good industrial accident"

3:38 PM
St Elmo's fire

@Mitch Tried that too. Turns out it's my personality.

Everyone says that.

That's cause everyone copies me too. Sigh. It's hard, so, so hard.

Discipline! I just consciously gave up looking for the real quote.
Also it was 'About Last Night'

@Mitch Londoners who move to New Castle, or vice versa

3:48 PM
There you go. Most Newcastlers probably understand Londoners just fine (through exposure on TV), but not the other way round. Just like everybody in the effing world knows what going on in small towns in the US, but Americans can barely tell where the moon is ("Is that in ... Europe?")

@Mitch Yeah, couldn't find it either. Rings a bell though.
@Mitch You mean the whole cousin marrying cousin incest thing?

@terdon Can you create a private room?

@Rathony Only to discuss moderation issues. Not for regular conversations.

crl

@crl :)

crl
Are you still in Greece?

Graeca sunt. Non legenda.

crl
speaking of Greece in latin, it's an offense :)

4:06 PM
Lol, hardly. That would have resulted in a lot of Romans arrested.
And yes, I am.

when someone flags an essay, it takes work to judge if it's offensive. like reading and stuff

crl
without more description in the flag, that's stupid yes

@terdon ?? kissing cousins? Not at all, we were discussing language continua and what that means. and presumably the definition should be more about chains of relative equals, rather than having one big population overshadow a much smaller one, the small one knowing the language of the bigger, but the bigger hardly having a clue about the smaller (and I mean individuals in the bigger or smaller population)

@Mitch I was referring to "Just like everybody in the effing world knows what going on in small towns in the US"

4:13 PM
Gawd, that's a looong chatroom name.

@terdon Oh.
@terdon if that's news elsewhere in the world then I suppose yes, given that I suspect that sort of things happens everywhere in the world, just everyone knows about the US incidents.

:)
I might have exaggerated a tad for effect.

5:14 PM
Are there Unicode codepoints for the small F and the small S in the columns on the left?
I don't know what to call them and I can't find them, probably because I don't know what to call them.

What does insular mean in that context?

@terdon of the isles

I hate it when my ignorance of the subject at hand precludes me from figuring out when someone's having me on.

5:39 PM
@terdon That's a pretty insular attitude

See what I mean?

Because you're being sporadic

So, what, those letters are primarily used in islands? In the UK?
