Or Canada and the US (but the Canadians know the difference)

crl
7:20 PM
hehe, yea I pee like 9.5kg, and sweat the other .5kg
guys, how do you call an animal type? like cats, dogs, humans, giraffe, is there a term for those things? (yea human are animals), hmm 'genre' maybe

7:35 PM
@Shafizadeh EXCUSEZ-MOI ?!

@crl notspecies?
@skillpatrol nice...thanks. Wow...the cheapest possible is >$50

user174558
8:00 PM
@Mitch Mexico?

8:12 PM
@tchrist Well, it is also somewhat productive in Latin, so I'm not surprised!
@crl Clade? Class? Genus? There are many such names in biological taxonomy.

I just realized that genre and genus are from the same root.
Etymology is so fun.

Hello! I need help!Could anyone give me some links to the newspeper articles with the examples of ALLUSION. I have found some...but it's not enough... :( Please!!!

what do you want to know?

Is this sentence correct? (specially ones in the end of sentence)
"Great answer ... But look, You have 400k rep .. So please let us to answer this kind of questions (easy) and you can answer hard ones"
I mean of "ones" is "questions"

@Daisy here
@Shafizadeh So please let us to answer this these kinds of questions (easy) and you can answer the hard ones

8:45 PM
I see, thanks :-)

kinds, I would say.
Yes.

ah ok

These modifies kinds, and these is plural, so kinds must be plural too.
These kind is like two child.

got it

crl
ok thanks guys :)

8:48 PM
np
:)

crl
@Daisy I need some newspeppers too

@crl Why did you say thanks?

crl
to earlier replies

ah ..
And was my question right? In other word, which one is correct?
"why did you say thanks?" or "why you said thanks?"

crl
last one is more 'informal' but both are fine I think

8:54 PM
ah ok

@Shafizadeh i don't like the last one

@Shafizadeh that wasn't flag worthy...

@HamZa what? I don't flag that comment.

@Shafizadeh you were flagged

I did, and not as a hostile action. :)

8:56 PM
@Færd well, you're attracting all 10K users that are currently online on stackexchange

@HamZa To be honest, I cannot understand what's your point.

@HamZa I don't think repititive proofreading questions are appropriate on this site, is all.

crl
the distance between the star and the flag is short, oh there's a confirm box

@Shafizadeh your sentence was flagged, 10K users across the network (like me) get a notification for review. I just said that your message wasn't flag worthy.

yeah I have no idea why anyone flagged that

8:58 PM
2 mins ago, by Færd
I did, and not as a hostile action. :)
well that's my point. Don't flag non-offensive messages. It will only attract (negative?) attention.

@Færd Chat flags are for very bad things that need immediate attention, not "I disagree this should be said".

Alright.

mistakes happen :)

Can you deflag something?

dunno

9:00 PM
@Færd nope.
Unless you call "10K users declining that flag" deflag*

crl
deflate

@HamZa ahh .. I thought just moderators are able to see flagged comments. And what did you do about my comment? did you approve it or not?

The flag has been cleared so everything is ok.

@Shafizadeh declined

@Seth thanks for your attention

9:01 PM
I think there's a bit of a disconnect here. On site only EL&U moderators can see flags. But this isn't on site, this is in chat. Stack Exchange chat spans all ~130 sites, so all moderators everywhere and users with 10k global reputation see spam/offensive flags.

@Seth But it says: flag this message as spam, inappropriate, or offensive.

lol

@Færd Yes, inappropriate in this case meaning inappropriate for respectful discourse, no 'considered outside of scope' :)

it means offensive

pretty much.

9:03 PM
Then it's redundant.

things can be inappropriate but not offensive
2

@Færd well I guess that depends if you consider a gory halloween "pictures" offensive or not.. but it is certainly inappropriate.

@HamZa thank you :-)

(as an example)

@JohnB Starred.

9:04 PM
:o

As a meta-chat tip.
Now double-starred.

inappropriate for children but not offensive to adults

There are all sorts of swear words here that aren't appropriate for children.
Should we flag all of them?!

no
aren't appropriate = inappropriate

I think inappropriate means makes it hard for this chat room to continue as a chat room.

9:09 PM
that is a good guideline
but always try and consider that you have the option to try and deal with the situation yourself before resorting to flagging

Imagine 100 people per second coming here for proof reading and getting answers.
What would happen?

it would be the most popular chat on the SE network by a long shot!

@JohnB That's a good point. Taken.

not suitable or proper in the circumstances.
"there are penalties for inappropriate behavior"
synonyms: unsuitable, unfitting, unseemly, unbecoming, unbefitting, improper, impolite; More?

Generally if you want to ban a specific behaviour that is not clearly offensive/abusive you need to hash it out on English Language & Usage Meta first.
but since (3?) distinct people answered the question it would seem you don't have much support in that way.
I like the theme in this room. Easy on the eyes.

9:12 PM
Reminds be a bit of Solarized (light)

@Seth check out f.lux (software)

@Seth People answer close-worthy questions on the main SE sites all the time (not to offend people who answered this particular question on this chat room), and some of those answerers aren't even rep hunters. Does this mean it's Okay to ask close-worthy questions?

Well, people will have different opinions on what is close-worthy. But people answering a question then casting a close vote, arg that's a personal gripe of mine

I didn't know my flag would attract this much attention, or I would've dealt with it in some other way perhaps. But I don't think it's wrong to be against proofreading questions.

@JasonBourne yes! I think they're really into sugary soft drinks? I don't know the reason.
But I think England is up there near the top, and as much as they might scoff at it, I think Germany and France not far behind
North Korea has no problem with it.
that's not funny

9:24 PM
@Færd no, my only point being unless such a rule already exists, trying to create one you will seemingly find yourself without much support..
@HamZa I use it :D

@Færd 'gender' too

(the Linux equivalent anyway)

@Færd also the questions he is asking are totally on scope. The regulars here have discussed it and it is appropriate.
@Færd proofreading is off topic on main ELU. It is ok on chat
@Færd yes that would be annoying. We've told people to be temperate with such questions in chat and @Shafizadeh has been very good, not swamping us with too many

9:40 PM
My new term for the day: tavşan kanı.
Is there a question about what's inappropriate in this chat?
@Færd Yes, in chat. This is covered in the chat etiquette FAQ: meta.english.stackexchange.com/questions/7438/chat-etiquette
