user19161
I like home alone 1 and 2 but not 3 and 4.

Q: Anglo Saxon noun suffixes

Rita BarkerWhat is the etymology of the suffix '-ness'? I have come across it in OE texts but always assumed it was a later borrowing.

General reference
Happy first day back at w--k
user19161
@MattЭллен Good good.
Hi Jasper :)
user19161
@MattЭллен What did you eat for lunch? I had chicken, egg and long beans for dinner.
I had a cheese and pickle sandwich and a peanut butter, honey and ginger sandwich
@JasperLoy any flavourings with it?
user19161
@MattЭллен It is all mixed with rice. The rice had gravy from the chicken.
13:02
sounds good
user19161
@MattЭллен The latter sounds exotic.
user19161
@MattЭллен Cheap local fare I have almost daily.
user19161
I like to go for cheap, good stuff, be it food or books or whatever.
@JasperLoy it's like a dessert sandwich
@JasperLoy wise
user19161
Just deserts is for the evil man. Just desserts is for the good man. The former burns in the desert while the latter enjoys his dessert.
user19161
13:05
I have a feeling the above will be starred soon.
user19161
Changing the counting method, I find that my blog has at least 500 non-self views. Whoo!
user19161
I just take the total number of views minus Linux views, since I only use Linux.
but not only you!
user19161
13:08
Yes, hence at least 500 views, possibly more.
Hola.
user19161
Hey @kit!
Hey @jas!
hi @Kit! :)
hi @Matt! ;)
Man, did I take my time about getting in this morning.
user19161
13:10
I hope I dream of Maria again tonight.
@Kitḫ accidentally?
user19161
Hi @jsb!
user19161
Perhaps Maria will dream of me too.
@MattЭллен Nah. I gamboled, gambled, and won.
user19161
@MattЭллен One must get up from the right side of the bed as well.
user19161
13:13
Otherwise everything will go wrong.
I slept past the buzzer, said good morning to my boys, waited for coffee, let the new car warm up...it was a good morning.
@Kitḫ good oh! Feeling lucky, huh ;)
@JasperLoy I can only rise from the left. Although i could change which end I sleep at
Oh yeah. Even when I'm late, I'm usually still in before everyone else.
user19161
There are three sleeping positions: on your back (need moderate pillow), on your tummy (need low pillow), on your side (need high pillow). I belong to the side group.
O_o, Matt rises sinister!
13:14
@Kitḫ well then, you're not even late!
@MattЭллен Exactly, my friend.
user19161
I hunted all over the island for the right pillow a few years ago. My current pillow is a few years old.
And I made the point of asking the dean if she'd gotten her new parking tag yet, what with the new year and all.
user19161
I can only sleep on latex pillows. Only these are not flattened too much over time.
13:16
Cleverly leading her to think that that was why I was outside of the building at that particular time.
Good thinking!
user19161
I once got the very expensive NASA pillow but it's useless.
Ach. Latex. Latex chafes me so.
@JasperLoy only works in micro-gravity?
@MattЭллен I don't know where you got the notion that my project lead is a total jackass. He's perfectly competent.
See? That almost-degree in psychology has really paid off.
user19161
13:17
@MattЭллен I can't remember what it has to do with NASA, but it's the real NASA alright. It changes shape according to your head. But that is not the real issue.
@JasperLoy micro-gravity is what you experience in the ISS
@Kitḫ hehehe
user19161
@MattЭллен OK the pillow is 99 dollars local currency, and it's wasted!
@MattЭллен Or when conducting secret experiments at the bottom of the ocean.
Shhhhh! you're letting your country's secrets out!
Oh bonus! I just found a peanut-butter cup in my coat pocket.
13:19
sweet!
@MattЭллен Right, yes, my country's secrets. Shh. Don't tell.
user19161
@MattЭллен You mean the secret that the pillow costs 99 dollars?
I think I have mentos in my coat pocket...
Mentos? Even better.
user19161
Well my latex pillow is only 10 dollars I think, very good!
13:21
Latex and I don't get along.
hmmm. apparently I've eaten them
LaTeX and I get along very well, though.
user19161
Why do the American dramas always have girls saying peanut butter and jelly sandwich?
@MattЭллен Well, I lied anyway. Mentos are not even better.
user19161
13:21
I think peanut butter and jelly do not go together.
@JasperLoy [citation needed]
@MattЭллен offers Altoids
user19161
@Kitḫ Can't remember. Maybe I'm just crapping.
user19161
But anyway I like watching Gilmore Girls!
@Kitḫ ta! mmmm minty
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are a staple of the young American diet.
I feed them to my boys all the time.
13:23
@Kitḫ you'd be appalled to know that i didn't like peanut butter as a child
It's like hot dogs and apple pie.
@JSBᾶngs Nah. I remember not liking cheese as a child.
Hi @JSB!
user19161
@jsb has been snow-gazing since New Year's Eve.
I have always been partial to crunchy peanut butter; now I am foisting that on my children.
What's snow-gazing?
user19161
@Kitḫ He was looking at the snow when I wished him on New Year's Eve.
Ah. I see.
Oh right! It's 2012.
user19161
13:25
I can only do rain-gazing here.
Happy New Year.
user19161
But one day I may go skiing with Maria.
How do you solve a problem like Maria?
user19161
@Kitḫ Well, by solving the other problems first.
@Kitḫ my sister's name is maria! we sang that song to her often
also Happy New Year @ELU
user19161
13:27
@kit Do you know who Maria is by the way?
user19161
@Kitḫ Happy New Year!
user19161
@JSBᾶngs Happy New Year!
user19161
@matt Happy New Year!
@JasperLoy Julie Andrews?
user19161
@Kitḫ You really don't know?
13:29
Happy new year @JasperLoy
Julie Andrews is probably the one true Maria
@JasperLoy Should I?
or, since this is Jasper, it may be that Maria is a solecism for Mariah
@Kitḫ with Maths?
or particle physics
bah! I just tried to tab complete physics
13:30
Oh, oh! Particle physics!
so, first day back in office, and i have only 116 unread mail messages. not mad.
Well, as soon as they disprove the Higgs field, I'm sure they'll get right on top of Maria
But apparently, it is by tempting her with Captain Von Trapp.
user19161
@Kitḫ Yes. Well Maria is the original Maria I liked before the other one.
@MattЭллен chortle
@JasperLoy Which other one?
@JSBᾶngs Woohoo!
user19161
@Kitḫ Erm, don't you know that there were two?
hi @JSBngs :) sounds like a good number of mails
All I've got is a friend request from someone I don't know.
user19161
@JSBᾶngs Do you mean not bad?
13:33
@JasperLoy er, yes
user19161
I think @kit should know who Maria is by now.
user19161
Oh dear, my cryptic ways are returning.
user19161
@Kitḫ I watched that before.
So are you not using her real name? Or is there a third?
@JasperLoy So you understand my reference then.
user19161
@Kitḫ Of course Maria's real name cannot be typed in this room in this context.
user19161
13:37
@Kitḫ No there were only two. I am sure you remember.
I can neither confirm nor deny any recollection of your love interests at this time.
user19161
@Kitḫ Very cryptic!
So why did you pick the name Maria?
Is she a problem you are trying to solve?
@Kitḫ because it's my sister's name, obviously
user19161
@Kitḫ It's a code name you see. And it happens in many songs I know, like Ave Maria.
user19161
13:39
@JSBᾶngs Don't worry, I am not after your sister.
@JSBᾶngs Dude, does your sister look like Danny Craig too? Because I would totally go for that.
@JasperLoy don't worry, she's married and has a baby, so she's off the market
Damn.
user19161
@Kitḫ No, not a problem, just a wish.
Did your first wish come true?
user19161
13:40
@JSBᾶngs LOL
user19161
@Kitḫ No, and I know not when, but I will continue to work towards it, and then the second, and now this Maria will be the third.
Hey, do any of you programmers know how to decrypt and re-encrypt PS3 data files?
user19161
Mrs Hiny is not here unfortunately.
@Kitḫ PlayStation3? no, nor any other thing that PS3 might mean, sorry
user19161
So @kit I actually emailed Maria during Christmas, haha! But no reply of course, just to let you know.
13:42
you're not trying to mess with Skyrim, are you?
@MattЭллен I just need to fix it. It is very frustrating.
@Kitḫ I see. Badly tested games are frustrating
Skyrim has copy-protected save files, which is bloody annoying considering that we've played a collective almost 200 hours under some random dude's account.
user19161
Maybe it's not a dude but a babe.
13:44
So we had to create new players at his mom's house when we were down there for a week.
It took us about a day to even figure out what the problem was, since Oblivion doesn't have that problem.
And we've never seen it before.
It's really, really annoying.
what is the problem?
You have a PSN account associated with your user account. That gets stamped on the file. If you try to load it onto a PS3 that doesn't have that PSN account, it will let you play, but not save.
So apparently, for the last two years, we have been playing with an account that belongs to the person who used to own our PS3.
user19161
I wonder what Mrs Hiny is doing now.
user19161
Maybe having tea with Mr Hiny.
It was only when we decided to move our Netflix onto the PS3 that we even realized it, and shortly thereafter had the Skyrim issue.
If we hadn't tried Netflix, it probably would have taken a million years before we figured it out.
13:48
oh man, that's annoying. Why do games companies make things so screwy?
Because what sort of sick bastard would do something like that?
And the most annoying thing is that Oblivion wasn't like that.
And I can understand maybe doing that for multiplayer online games or whatnot, but seriously, what gives?
user19161
@MattЭллен I have difficulty parsing this sentence.
If people want to cheat at Skyrim, that's their business.
user19161
@Kitḫ No cursing in chat!
13:50
I just want to be able to take my 70+ hours of gameplay to my mother-in-law's house.
@Kitḫ it shouldn't matter then name of the player. Or the account. it's almost as if they're trying to stop people selling save games or something
Sure, maybe. But who cares if they sell save games?
user19161
Luckily I play no games.
They have to have bought the game in order for them to work anyway.
user19161
In Soviet Russia, games play me.
13:52
@Kitḫ I don't know, but Blizzard made it part of the WoW EULA that you can't sell your gold outside the game, and I can't fathom that either.
Anyway, I think I will write down the other person's account email, and see if I can create an account without having to enter the password.
@MattЭллен That's different.
That was creating an unregulated currency exchange.
Also, they made hacking the diablo save games incredibly difficult
@Kitḫ well, any in game item is not up for external sale
And in general, I don't support game hacking, but that's because I like playing them.
The guys who run Eve Online don't have an issue with such a currency exchange
I would just like to change the name on my save file.
user19161
13:55
In general I don't support using pirated software.
@MattЭллен Really? I was pretty sure that all of that was illegal now.
@Kitḫ yeah, it does seem a reasonable request
Maybe I can find a PS3 developer who can do it for me.
Hmm.
I could look up the names of the coders and find an email address...
user19161
But I do like to at least browse books before getting them, but many are not even available for browsing.
@Kitḫ Well, I don't play it, I'm going on what other people tell me
user19161
13:56
@MattЭллен In Soviet Russia it plays you.
user19161
I am beginning to enjoy my monologue!
indeed.
user19161
@Kitḫ So do you think you know who Maria is now?
Yeah, of course. I'm not actually stupid.
user19161
13:59
@Kitḫ Good good.
You were obsessed with Lauren and then simchona. Simchona didn't work out, so now you are back to Lauren.
But you aren't supposed to be discussing her in chat, so you came up with a code name.
But really, you just shouldn't discuss her in chat.
Why?
do you think a proof reading Stack Exchange could work?
user19161
@MattЭллен But what would the questions be like?
i just saw the most beautiful sunrise from the windows of my office building
@JasperLoy please proof read this
14:06
the plains are covered with snow, glowing blue in the dawn light, with stripes of orange and yellow above them from the sun, just getting ready to break over the horizon
user19161
@JSBᾶngs That sounds like a line from your book.
it would be like the code review Stack Exchange, but for prose
I guess you'd have to limit the amount being proof read
user19161
@MattЭллен But there would not be a definitive answer.
for proof reading? sure there would. you correct the gramar and spel;g mitakes
jarb durn
user19161
@MattЭллен There are various ways to fix a paragraph.
14:10
there are various ways to right code
there's no definitive way to write something
user19161
@MattЭллен OK then. Maybe you can propose.
user19161
@jsb How is your book sales?
@JasperLoy meh
14:31
@JasperLoy I think maybe writers already does this. I shall not be propositioning today
user19161
@MattЭллен There is a difference between a proposition and a proposal.
I know :D
I saw the question earlier today
user19161
0
Q: What is the difference in meaning between "proposal" and "proposition"?

zespriThese two words have similar meanings, however in certain contexts only one of the two can be used or is used most frequently (fits better idiomatically). Can you give examples of such contexts and if possible explain the difference?

user19161
But I commented on Martin's answer because I don't know why he said that about a proposition.
user19161
And I did not understand how Jay could have misspelled his name.
user19161
14:33
Though I understand that he used Mister to achieve a comical effect.
did jay edit the answer after your comment?
oh, I see the missing t in the second instance
user19161
@MattЭллен Neither edited their answer. They are both nuts.
Jay probably hasn't seen it, the first instance is spelt correctly
user19161
@MattЭллен But I think he should write his answer seriously rather than calling him Mister.
I think he is being serious. Saying Mr is polite.
user19161
14:39
@MattЭллен Sounds like comedy to me still.
well, tone of voice is difficult to hear in text
user19161
@MattЭллен We don't really use Mr in this kind of situation I would say.
Referring to someone deferentially?
I think we do
user19161
@MattЭллен Leaving work soon?
@JasperLoy in an hour or so. first day back's been a soft one :)
user19161
14:45
@MattЭллен Good good.
@MattЭллен Nooo!
I can give you a good answer to the -ness question!
user19161
@Cerberus Then please do.
@Cerberus better than etymonline?
@MattЭллен Yes!
Of course.
well, then I would very much like to hear it :)
user19161
14:50
@MattЭллен Of course. Without Cerberus there is no English Language.
Does the entry on Etymonline seem complete and satisfactory to you?
I don't have a use for the information, so yes
this is why I asked Rita to expand on what she wants to know
Didn't you wonder where -assu- came from?
otherwise I can't see what is missing
@Cerberus not in the slightest
:D
I wasn't thinking about the OP, but rather about how useful this question and its answers can be to the general public.
14:52
not that I'm not interested, but it's not something I have though about
@MattЭллен Go wash your mouth with soap!
@Cerberus right, but as the question is, it's not much use.
@MattЭллен I think it's fine.
It asks for etymology, and Etymonline doesn't have all the information that exists.
@Cerberus and you have a good answer for it, so I hear
it's not closed yet!
@MattЭллен My answer will not be complete either, but at least more so than E's.
14:55
sounds good to me :)
