12:28 PM
Moin.
My long vacation is over.
Now I must wade through my inbox.

12:40 PM
good luck. I'll keep the lights on

I've made it about a third of the way. Apparently, someone decided it would be a good idea to log all this long email exchange against a ticket, so I've got two copies of everything in semi-random order.
But I have to check each response, because if it's from our department, it won't be duplicated.

Oops. Everything should be done on the ticket, surely. Just delete all the email.
Or at least, mark it read without actually reading it.

Also, now one of the two stakeholders is stomping his feet and declaring that we need to figure this stuff out! Except we had a scoping meeting two weeks ago. We've already assigned priorities to everything except the one new thing.
@AndrewLeach Well I could do, except that it's nearly impossible to read through a ticket.
Because our system isn't designed for finding things or displaying information, just for sort of collecting it.

12:58 PM
The priority-setting task needs to have its priority set.

It would be funnier if I didn't feel quite so inflamed this morning.

You all need to record the time spent updating your time sheet in your time sheet.

It was hellacious getting the boys to school this morning.
@Mitch I do that. I thought everyone did that.

I sense a certain warmth in your words

omg. I didn't want to get out of my nice new bed myself.
Then the littlest just pulled his blanket over his head and said he didn't feel good and he needed more rest, etc.
While the eldest was just sobbing in his room.

1:01 PM
So far 2016 sucks. I'm going back to bed

It will be funny later today, but I almost lost my temper and dragged them both by the ankle down to breakfast.
Mommy doesn't fucking want to be awake either, you little punks! Get your asses dressed and eat your fucking cereal!
Now I feel like shouting at my stakeholders.

forced to eat breakfast? How dare you!

I know, right?
And someone used all the bread for toast, so the little one has chips and a granola bar for lunch.

Breakfast is the gift the gods have to us right after fire.

Drag your steak holders to the table by their ankles

1:04 PM
I feel like the worst parent evah this morning.

user116848
2016 seems just like 2015.

user116848
Uptil now.

@KitZ.Fox I'm sure every parent does :D

Right next to Prometheus getting his liver pecked out by an eagle, there is Ceres sentenced for eternity to walk through a hallway in bare feet with a single Lego piece blindfolded

And seriously. These stakeholders. They keep freaking out that "we're in violation of contract!!!" "we're NONCOMPLIANT!!!" but no one has responded to my request of three weeks ago to show me the exact thing we're not in compliance with.
WE NEED IT RIGHT NOW!!!!
deep breath
exhale slowly
Vacations are so relaxing.

1:06 PM
@Arrowfar I noticed that too.

user116848
'evening!

Hi!

2015 seemed a lot like 2014 too

Is it 2015 already?
I keep thinking it's 2003.

I woke up this morning, made a list of things to do, almost left the house, and realised my wallet is on the floor of my girlfriend's car. so I can't do half the things

1:08 PM
But how 2014 was not like 2015 is not exactly the same as how 2015 is like 2016.
So there's hope

Damn! imagines how it might have ended up there ... damn.

nothing exciting.

user116848
It is not even cold here. 25 C now.

user116848
But pleasant.

25C would be pleasant :D

1:10 PM
Your girlfriend is having a better day. She found a wallet in her car. She's already halfway through her list and she hasn't even started

It's -7 C here.

user116848
That's very cold.

My thermometer is broken so there's no temperature here at all

Eh. Typical for winter.

@Mitch lol
it looks about 12C here

1:11 PM
The water doesn't know whether to freeze or boil
Most of it just sits there
So I drank it
Poor water

> may disregard [this product] due to the higher pricetag which shows as default
Oh noes! Customers might not realize they can get this product cheaper!

@Mitch Why have you blindfolded a Lego brick?

By about 2%!
And then they won't buy it. :(
Even though it is literally the only product they can use for this purpose.

@AndrewLeach the pain is so much worse when the Lego doesn't know when it's going to be stepped on

> it is convenient to have the process fully documented
I feel like it should be something more than "convenient".

1:20 PM
What? It's decidedly not convenient. All that reading!

More like, "if we want to have anyone understand how to actually do this".
Always a fight.

It should be self documenting.

Right. That works really well when every team does it differently if at all.

Like those digital wrist watches with four buttons that do I don't know what
I was walking though an Apple Store (I was walking though a mall and had to use the bathroom and the Apple Store was ... It's a long story for another time...)

right. just press them until it does what you want it to.

1:23 PM
And I looked at the Apple Watch. And I couldn't figure out the point.
Except for telling time. I got that part

Does it do that?

After a while yes
It was 1:35pm last I looked

You bought one?

I don't get how that helps me now though
Stupid apple watch

13:25 now
you've gone back in time

1:26 PM
Huh. Maybe it does help out

Will Notepad++ format JSON for me?

Hm I wonder if it could help us skip the waking up part. That's the worst part of the day.

Into something more readable?

You mean auto format?

Yeah. I got it to colorize, but that's not helpful.

1:29 PM
Oh. Hmm... Eclipse? Net beans? IntelliJ?

Uh....

Let me see.
All I have on this box is VS.

VS?
Visual Source without the Safe?

Visual Studio

1:30 PM
Oh

grumble
bbl

It looks like there're lots of Jason for matters on the web.

1:43 PM
Happy New Ear

Happy 2017!
Just in case we forget by then.

Just in case we've been obliterated in a nuclear Armageddon by then.
I suppose that probably won't be Happy.
Oh. Cheerful. I'm back at work.

You won't know if you don't try it!

1:59 PM
It's -15°C here. Does anyone have any °Cs they can lend me?

Haha.
It was +15⁰C here a few days ago.
But now it's only 4, so I'm afraid I have none to spare.
Is -15 normal?

It's a bit cold for this time of year. Also, two days ago it was 3°C and tomorrow it will be -4 and Saturday it will be 5. So it's a weird year for weather.

weird indeed

Also I'm told that with the wind-chill it's -24

allegedly the north pole was above freezing a couple of days ago
noöne went there to check

2:06 PM
Has anyone worked with a web designer before?

I must have, but I can't recall exactly
I think I worked for people who worked with web designers
I know web designers

I can't remember how to work with JSON. I don't know what to expect from this web designer except that he feels like an intruder. I am not enjoying being back to work.

web designers are designery. they don't like thinking about code, usually
they like thinking about how something will look

Well. Except this guy isn't actually a designer. I think he's a developer in disguise.

2:10 PM
Because he's the one who setup the JSON object.

will he try and mess with your flow?

I don't know. I met him literally immediately before I went on vacation.
Like after I said "Nice meeting you," I walked out the door to my car and went home for two weeks.
And now I'm working remotely while they renovate the floor I work on usually.
So I won't see him for at least another week. And he's in a whole other department.
He's not even IT.

@KitZ.Fox I can help with JSON if you need it. I love it. But remember it's just a way to represent data. You need lots of other bits to make it useful. Like a way to transport the data.

And the thing he sent me is a bad query, so I'm wondering if he's testing my knowledge, or what.

2:16 PM
he's probably just wrong

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Thanks.
I don't even need to do this, I just need to check it to make sure it is what the dev needs, or if I have to request something else.
Except I'm having a hard time checking it...

@MattE.Эллен Seriously, in midwinter?
ponders

@Cerberus yes, well that was the prediction, because they have no measuring things up there

I see.
It's still remarkable.

2:22 PM
omg, this is a mess. @Mr.Shiny, do you mind helping me sort it? I'll create a room for us...

2:48 PM
this is interesting! I didn't know about this bug

so glad I don't have an iPhone.

@KitZ.Fox So I presume you then record your time doing that? Don't worry, it converges.

@Mitch No, it's the same time.
@MattE.Эллен Interesting!

@KitZ.Fox Sadly, there have been similar bugs in Android.
@MattE.Эллен I think they fixed the bug fairly quickly but I'm not aware of an explanation of what exactly it was.

So the way it works in my house is that the boys' allowance in dollars is equal to their age in years. They get paid when I get paid, so every fortnight. Half of their allowance must go into savings, the other half is spending money.
They can put money from spending in their savings account, but once it is in there, it doesn't come out again.
They both have checkbook register and we reconcile the accounts when they get their allowance.

3:00 PM
Wow, that's pretty advanced.

Next year, or in two months actually, the eldest will start putting one dollar into a 'charity' jar, for donating or buying gifts for other people.

I was going to let them spend a little and learn about buyer's remorse, and set savings goals they can't reach, before increasing the amount.

crl
(web)kit is still less mature than (fire)fox

Picking a savings goal is important.
The little one has yet to reach his goal, but the eldest has made it twice.
Now he's saving for a Nintendo 3DS.
I'm trying to convince him to go for a Vita instead, since then he'll have the advantage of our PS Plus account.
But it's still a long way off on the horizon.

yeah with an allowance that size much larger purchases are possible.

3:09 PM
It's because I'm so rich.

Which I am now because I can tell them they can buy it themselves.

It's good though, it means when they're in a toy store with you they can say "can we buy this? can we buy this?" and you can say "go ahead, use your spending money"

Exactly that.
Except for books, which they often sucker me on.

yeah I'm going to try that for the first time tomorrow, when we go to the lego store for the monthly mini-build

3:11 PM
I say that, but the eldest blew all his savings on books twice.

yeah...books should be 'free' at that age
or should they?

@Mitch it depends though. Kids can devour books like crazy
my daughter reads multiple books in a day. And each one costs $5-$12
it adds up.

I recommended that he should borrow from the library, but he wanted to own them.

but they're expensive for them not for us. think of it like a utility that should e guaranteed by the government
yeh...library.
but so many good books are not at the library
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Oh. wow. she needs a library card

@Mitch yeah. So, about that. The kids get books from the school library. But my wife is concerned about bedbugs potentially being in the public library books. So we don't go there often.

3:14 PM
?? bedbugs in library books?
I'd expect worse before that. Like the ... psoriasis.
wait...let me take that back. I don't want to spread ideas.
Like the ... psoriasis.
Which is totally curable now!!

I thought psoriasis was a nervous disorder.

sort of (using MAB)
@AndrewLeach Like many weird things these days, it's an autoimmune thing.
related to Crohn's disease (an IBD)
I think.
spondylisthesis (sp?)?
wait that's just spinal compression.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Oh. That's ... problematic.

but sometimes there is autoimmune disorder that connects psoriasis with some types of back pain.
so if you have both, they might be treated with one drug
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 how... holy crap...it's not crazy... there is evidence it happens.

@Mitch Yeah. But some battles are not worth fighting. I take it as license to buy as many books as I want.

3:22 PM
holds library book at arm's length
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I can't seem to get over the barrier of reading books on a screen.

Oh, here's a news story of it happening right here in Toronto: thestar.com/news/gta/2012/12/19/…

Bedbugs are insidious too.
It's a totally legit concern and one that I completely ignore.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Is your daughter past the 'magic tree house' stage?

@Mitch she reads simple books and relatively longer chapter books. She could handle something like the first two Harry Potter books, maybe.

3:59 PM
toolbar and menu are quite synonyms no? How would you can an horizontal thing containing buttons?

nay
Menu can be placed anyway
Anywhere
While toolbars are generally on the top of a browser or site

crl
hmm ok

A menu can be a toolbar
But not vice versa

crl
you said 'generally'

Sometimes on the side
Never somewhere in the middle
Toolbars are also mostly used by the browser itself
Rather than a site

crl
4:01 PM
oxford dict: toolbar-> a strip of icons that can be clicked to perform certain functions.
menu -> A list of commands or facilities displayed on screen.

In Word, you can drag a toolbar to the centre of the screen if you so choose.
At least in Word 2003.

crl
or a toolbar as a sidebar, that may exist too
I'd see more a toolbar as a container of things like buttons, (dropdown)-menus, input text
a menu is more homogeneous

I usually see a toolbar as that thing below my opened tabs
All my programs and bookmarks

4:20 PM
A toolbar should be something that is or can be permanently visible on the screen.
A menu is normally only visible for a short time.

crl
good point (like the classic file menu)

The definitions are sometimes blurry but a toolbar typically has buttons that invoke actions right away, while a menu (bar) is a list of menus and it's the menu that has the actions in it. So a menu bar has menus on it, and actions inside menus, while a toolbar has the actions right on it, typically in icon or button form.
Of course nowadays you can have a menu on a toolbar.
So maybe a toolbar is a generic bar that contains tools and maybe menus, and a menu bar is a toolbar that contains only menus.

crl
yes :)
or maybe it has also to do with their 'shape', a tool-bar is thin (horizontally or vertically) while a menu can have any fat shape

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 And by "right on it" you mean permanently visible on the screen.

Not all widgets will conform to any taxonomy we invent.

4:28 PM
@crl Good point.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Very true.
As with all things in life.

@Cerberus Yeah... inasmuch as the bar itself is permanently visible, but also, some toolbars are context-sensitive, so buttons appear and disappear.

Hi there.

But a menu(bar) contains labels that reveal menus of action items. A toolbar contains visible action items.

Hello @JustynaNogala. If you have a question, just interrupt.

Could you check if I formed the following sentence correctly?
In consonance with the thesis statement most of this work is meant to determine the quality of translated text using free online machine translation software. The other purposes are; to compare machine translation's text with a text translated by a human, to show a particular set of skills possessed by the human that a machine is lacking in, and last but not least, to prove that despite its minuses MT with the help of the translator might form a decent team.

4:31 PM
I'd use a colon to introduce a list and separate the list items with a semi-colon.

@AndrewLeach I know the rules in here.
;)

Is MT defined anywhere above? I find it distracting that the paragraph sometimes writes it out and sometimes doesn't.

> The other purposes are: to compare machine translation's text with a text translated by a human; to show a particular set of skills possessed by the human that a machine is lacking in; and last but not least, to prove that despite its drawbacks, MT with the help of the translator might form a decent team.

yes it is

> to prove that despite its drawbacks, machine translation with the help of a human translator might form a decent team.
or maybe
> to prove that despite its drawbacks, machine translation can be a helpful tool for human translators.
I'm not sure "machine translation" + "human translator" = "team"

4:39 PM
The point is that a translator can use MT to render the text very fast because the rendering proccess is quite a time absorbing and then edit it.
Oh I'm sorry, you've already typed it. ;) That's all for the time being, thank you.

It's okay we type quickly.

q u i c k l y

I do find it not morally devious to type quickly
#commassavelives

you typed it just then
I'm going to keep making this use/mention joke until someone laughs

Hah! Hah! Haha! Please stop! It hurts!

4:49 PM
:D
oh, alright

Death by laughter

Ha Ha Bonk.

A real threat to the longevity of humanity

And so to bed. Well, home, anyway. Dons armour for the battle with the railway.

good luck!

4:51 PM
@AndrewLeach Where are you??
Must be...East Asia?

@MattE.Эллен I've been typing slowly all this time in case people can't read too well

@Cerberus No, just a lazybones

@Mitch that's very considerate of you, but those aren't synonyms

He must be a...

When a pun is so bad it clears the entire room for hours
just doing my job

@DeltaEscher Not sure whether these remarks are a swipe at me, but I'm likely to suffer a sense of humour failure.

I just like puns
It means nothing to you as a person

Please don't make them personal.

Never will anymore
Sorry for the bad feels
I guess I just delt a whole lot of pain
le cringe

6:39 PM
That's a general thing, not just about my name.

Personal stabs aren't cool
You can't change who you are, and making fun of that just makes that more prominent

You got it :-)

Programming course requires me to use a simulator
Been loading for 15 minutes
finally shut it down
#flawlessprogramming

did it simulate your interest?

it simulatenously sparked and defused my interest
it assimulated my computer's RAM

6:43 PM
Resistance Is Futile!

6:54 PM
Peace and long life, everybody!

Live long and prosper.
I may be revealing too much here.

@AndrewLeach
Live long and prosper?
I am anti-capitalist vegan atheist
am offind
slowly drinks $10 espressicino

7:43 PM
@DeltaEscher I'm unsure which of those is meant to oppose "live long" and which "prosper"

Vegans for live long (Metal pills 4 lyfe)
Anti-capitalist for prosper (money is for teh peoplez)

Most vegans aren't opposed to living long. And prosperity isn't synonymous with capitalism.
atheists, though, what a bunch of tossers.

I got a mod hat!

Can I say that? tossers?
@KitZ.Fox nice!

does a little happy dance
This is a ridiculously nice hat.

7:51 PM
It's great that it's a bit obscure, other people won't know what it means.

I want to wash it to see if it will fade in a cool way.

Gosh, I didn't know that word.
Apparently, it comes from ehh a certain act.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 except of course for me and Andrew
tut tut tut

oh I meant the hat is obscure.

7:56 PM
it's a diamond. obv a logo. but of WHAT?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Doesn't believe in a god that has a special place for non-worshippers
Gets called out
;-;

@DeltaEscher I'm just kidding. Not all atheists are tossers. Some of my best friends are... well, no. hardly any of my friends are atheists.
Which, as an atheist, is frustrating at times.

now, I can't voucher for whether all Americans make these mistakes, but it demonstrates the nature of tosser
