19:00
All the volunteers left
a regular public room?
And by let's, I mean you do it, @Matt.
You have an option, so use it and I'll talk you through the rest.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I never understood what was broken with dogs that required fixing.
19:00
Someone is in desperate need of a private chat.
Yeah like Jarvis. He needs some talkin’-to. Needs to be jeeved or jived.
Not Jarvis, silly.
me? NOT!!!
It's in the user context menu...
@tchrist Their reproductive ability is a defect, not a feature.
19:02
@KitFox That has been a test of the emergency invite menu. Had there been an actual emergency, MREs would have been provided.
hahaha
Two mods in a room... this is great!
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Fixed dogs are ineffable.

Q: One word for "unworthy of consideration"

laggingreflexIf you're faced with two options and one of them is more worthy of consideration, as in it takes less of your time, making the other option more "unworthy of consideration". It has a clear disadvantage that needs to be highlighted with a "strong" adjective. "unconsiderworthy" was the word I ...

@medica You. Have. No. Idea.
19:03
Hi @medica
To the mods @KitFox, @MattЭллен -
@tchrist I agree, it is a sin against caninity.
@skullpatrol Hi!
@medica ProTip: we call them "blueberries" now, on account of their name labels.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 thanks!
19:04
@medica at least, I'm trying to get that coinage to stick.
I call them other names :-)
To all blueberries in this room, I have a desire to discuss this user.
@Cerberus If the problem is with effing dogs effing, then fixing them renders them ineffable.
Ah.
Effing can be problematic.
This user has come up numerous tines in the election as syptomatic as a problem in our answers.
19:06
Hey, Rob has been given the room, do I read that right?
The question above was originally about the word considerworthy.
As the system is supposed to do, the OP realized that considerworthy was not a real word, so changed his question.
@Cerberus he's got the keys to the kingdom
Great.
@Cerberus Yep, I asked them to ask him first.
I see.
19:08
@medica OK. @Matt. Step up.
OHai!
sorry, I was distracted
I'm off the phone, so let's do this thing.
@medica This surely is not the user you had in mind during elections.
We'll get back to the room thing in a minute.
19:09
I see few revisions.
But the user in question defended the word considerworthy with this comment:
@medica I found several uses, including contemporary governmental. An example of early use: "I am compelled to offer these remarks in answer to the inquiry of your correspondent G. W. D., which, if you considerworthy a place in your Magazine, their insertion will oblige, Sir, Combustion." -Mechanics magazine. v. 2 (1824) — Third News 11 hours ago
@KitFox Slow down teacher, give your student time to absorb.
@MattЭллен Does this not mean he shall be forevermore oblique?
@tchrist This is a user referred to by many in the election.
@medica that's clearly a merge or consider and worthy, not an adjective
19:10
@MattЭллен precisely.
@tchrist until someone undoes what I have done
But now that I think of it, I don’t believe @Reg is oblique here. Or even leaning a little.
A comment I made to him imediately afterward, thinking he would realize his mistake.
Oh, you're not talking about the OP, but about Third News?
@medica I am not clear on what you feel is wrong here, nor a suggested solution?
19:11
@KitFox Yes, Kit is correct.
@KitFox Oh, that one is the one I’ve definitely honed in on.
This was his response to my correction:@medica, I always check for a difference between the OCR, and the text scan; your comment is inaccurate
And even explained to @Reg, who was unaware.
Hi @Robusto proud new room owner :-)
@tchrist Yes, and there's more to it than you realize.
19:12
Umm, OK.
@Rob Speak! We want to test your obliquity.
Yup, there it is.
I have spoken.
@KitFox There always is.
@Robusto italics
What do you see?
19:13
@Robusto Your name next to Reg
@MattЭллен @KitFox People obliquely referred to his bad answers and his lack of proficience with English. I wondered before, but didn't know what to do except to downvote and comment.
@Robusto You’ve obviously been to Pisa.
@tchrist Well, which makes this case quite peculiar. Never seen anything like it.
What, all my posts come out in italics?
@medica that's all that needs to be done.
@Robusto just your name
19:14
@Robusto No, your name.
@Robusto No, your attribution is oblique.
You're a room owner.
@MattЭллен Well, I thought so too.
It's your difference.
19:14
My attribute was oblique before. It's called a "screen name."
@KitFox I’ve given up on downvoting him for fear of a scripted reversal.
OK, next question: why am I suddenly a room owner?
@Robusto Sharing the love.
@tchrist Good thing.
@Robusto You and Reg can rule this room with an iron fist :P
19:15
@Robusto I was practising with the tools, and someone said to make you an owner
@skullpatrol Not bloody likely.
I believe we have Mahnax to thank for that.
it's easily undone if you like
For which he was summarily suspended.
And then unsuspended.
I don't care one way or the other. I just won't be ruling anything with an iron fist. Not my style at all.
19:16
yeah, so Third News. Can someone summarize the problem?
@KitFox I am figuring — please neither confirm nor deny — that there’s an autoflag about this in my regard. I know that a history of downvoting the same person even spread over time can cause some fuzzy flagellation for mod attention.
it happens to wipqozn on the bridge almost hourly
@Robusto come on, try it for awhile pleeese :-)
@tchrist I can neither confirm nor deny any such confirming or denying of things.
There you go.
19:17
Except to say I feel your actions were prudent.
But the point is that nearly everything he writes is bollocky.
room topic changed to English Language & Usage: The Incomprehensible Room — now with old subtitles and new moderators. And 100% more room owners! (no tags)
Mirabile visu!
I expected better :)
19:18
I'm just getting warmed up.
Also, I'm pacing myself.
He can also deputize, so y'all better be nice.
three cheers for the new room ower
hip hip hooray
@KitFox, @MattЭллен My question: does a mod have any ability or influence to do anything about a user who is often wrong in his answers, gives proof of his lack of proficiency with language, yet who still gets enough up votes (by reason of answering so many questions) to be on the leaderboard... That was alluded to in the elections. I was hoping there was more one could do than downvote and comment.
@KitFox Is that kickbanning putas?
@medica What do you suggest?
@tchrist not addressed to you, but your suggestions are welcome.
19:20
@Robusto Since you own the room now, I demand better furniture.
I hate the ugly design stuff.
@medica No really, I do not know what you think might be appropriate here.
@Cerberus We got you a new doghouse. It's out back, and you never use it.
I want a Louis Seize table.
@tchrist No, he can make others owners.
@medica we are looking into it.
19:21
@Cerberus Louis Quatorze won't do?
Too Kitsch.
@medica He's not the first user like that.
@Cerberus Said the boy in wooden shoes.
@KitFox I'm sure not, but he is one of those I've noticed since my arrival.
But there's not more you personally can do.
19:22
@KitFox Je me suis déjà rendu compte qu’on pourrait faire cela.
Sure.
room topic changed to English Language & Usage: The Incomprehensible Room: If you can figure out what we're talking about, you're in the wrong place (no tags)
I liked the other one better.
@Robusto You will be discomfitting certain minors.
@Robusto In my opinion, your new ownership of this room is the second best thing to come out of this election
19:23
@KitFox I accept that. But my question remains: is there anything else that actually can be done?
@medica I guess I don’t see the transgressing or antisocial or even asocial actionable acts.
@skullpatrol Thank you for your support.
What's the best thing? That people are no longer trying to suck up to people in election chat?
19:25
@tchrist I've not mentioned "antisocial or even asocial actionable acts". Please don't answer is if I had.
@Cerberus Your tabula seems more castaña than rasa. Maybe even ceresia.
@medica We're talking it over.
:16280010, @MattЭллен OK, that sound good. Thank you both.
@medica I don’t understand.
room topic changed to English Language & Usage: The Incomprehensible Room (status by design) (no tags)
19:26
@Robusto Best.
What happens if I add a tag to the room?
@Cerberus That too, but I was thinking that matt got elected
@Robusto Reg yells at you.
it shows up as a tag
@tchrist what don't you understand?
19:26
But does it have unintended consequences?
@tchrist Could be or just plain mahogany.
Not really. He said it narrows the topic so don't do it or something.
I wasn't really listening.
@skullpatrol Ah, yay!
I just nodded and assumed he knew best.
19:27
I shan't touch it.
@Robusto nope, perfectly safe. I have done it many times.
@KitFox - sorry, this was supposed to be addressed to you as well: OK, that sound good. Thank you both.
OK. Too much excitement for me. I'm off.
@Robusto Are you aware of the slang use of tag as a working girl or boy?
19:29
puppy has a bad fart day, makes me look for turds when it happens
@tchrist I would totally tag that.
@tchrist Nope. I am not a denizen of the demimonde.
[tag:people-who-do-not-hate-tags-but-just-never-trust-them-to-be-anywhere-near-c‌omplete]
@Robusto Read Brust.
My tag doesn't work!
See? Tags suck.
Stop it!!
prolly too long
@tchrist I've already read Proust. But I can't find Brust.
19:30
No apostrophes, @Cerb.
Is that really it?
Jesus.
19:30
@Robusto Still doesn't work.
Try [tag:people-who-donʼt-hate-tags-but-just-never-trust-them-to-be-anywhere-near-co‌‌mplete] instead.
Oh fine, it won’t accept transASCII code points. Done bass.
Yeah. WTF.
19:31
It’s too long.
Meaning, your tag.
I think it's a length thing.
Ah, jinx.
@MattЭллен And lame-o was his name-o.
tags except ';":!@#$%^&*() etc.
19:33
the whole rest of unicode
ASCII is the best of Unicode. All the greatest hits.
@MattЭллен Régarde, STP.
ASCII: For when you absolutely, positively have only seven bits to rub together.
@tchrist oh! how progressive
19:35
[tag:öooo]
They get to have cool tags.
It’s enabled on a per-site basis.
Why can't we have them?
because we're not cool
[tag:eeeñ]
19:37
Can you think of any potential ELU tag that would tag a transASCII Unicode letter? I cannot.
ones with tremas
Off to ride my bike. Latours.
Tag naïveté.
Tag façade.
@tchrist Just catching up here; why have you given up on down voting him?
@medica Because it doesn’t dissuade him and because it gets me flagged.
@tchrist It gets you flagged? By whom? (or what mechanism?)
@medica The SS.
@tchrist SS?
19:42
Secret-squirrel Scripts.
@tchrist (assuming you don't actually mean the German SS)
@tchrist sorry, not familiar.
@tchrist the guy is relentless in his poor answers.
the autodetect bad voting script
it detects where people vote the same way on one user
@medica Have you yet read Jon Ericson’s answer?
and reverses the voting if it seems egregious
@MattЭллен but, then, how does - or how can - our down voting of bad answers have an effect on bad answerers?
19:45
We need a way to flag answers as "wrong"
@tchrist No, I don't know him, is he new?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Downvoting does that. Or is intended to.
@medica The developer who’s working on this.
@tchrist oh, gosh...
We need a way to flag people on the Internet as "wrong".
19:47
@medica it only happens when you do it a lot to the same person.
Starting with...Mr Shiny. About Project Ara.
@tchrist, @MattЭллен So, if I understand correctly, this flagging for bad answerers is being worked on so that flagging won't happen?
@MattЭллен but exactly, we are supposed to downvote bad answers!
@medica yes. I don't understand the problem
@MattЭллен well, as Tom said, he's stopped down voting third news because of fear of SS.
@medica only downvoting Third News
I'm sure he otherwise downvotes as he pleases
19:52
@MattЭллен I'm confused.
@MattЭллен Third New's answers are often poor. So if we down vote his poor answers, we can be flagged for doing what we're supposed to do with poor answers, even if they come from the same user repeatedly?
if user X votes in the same direction on user Y across multiple of user Y's posts in a short space of time (I think) then the script will trigger, reversing the votes
@medica yes. but that's OK because multiple people should see that his answers are poor.
@MattЭллен What's a short time period
@MattЭллен he posts several answers a day at times.
I'm not sure.
Anyway. the mods are looking into it.
Lost all power.
Must get UPSes again.
Heavy lightning.
@MattЭллен Ok, I'm glad they are, because I think it is worth looking into. But it seems strange that the very thing we're told to do with bad answers can backfire on us.
19:56
@tchrist glad to see it's back!
Flickers.
@medica yes, it can be frustrating in these rare cases
@MattЭллен OK, understand.
@medica What you can do — without fear of script reprisal — is close-vote or delete-vote somebody.
@tchrist - how long ago did you stop down voting his answers? Do you still occassionally down-vote him?
@tchrist but we can't do that on answers...
19:58
@medica I came across the opposite problem when I was going through the unanswered list and upvoting answers, but every answer I came to worth upvoting was by MrHen. So I couldn't do it
@medica What do you mean we, White Man?
@tchrist lol
I can and do delete-vote answers.
Nobody else seems to delete-vote diddly squat around here.
