Kit
3:00 AM
I retagged and retitled it, so it's easy to find later.
Provided we can remember that it's "phrasal verb."

Hehe.
I, for one, might not.

Kit
Damn it! Again I am up until an ungodly hour! What is wrong with you people?!
Why is there no interrobang when I need it most!?

@Kit ‽

Edited.

Kit
@aedia You are a kind and generous unicorn. I feel badly for being tempted to take advantage of you last night.

3:07 AM
K, going home. I'll be back later

Kit
@simchona Good night!

@Kit Lead me not into temptation; I can find the way myself. (Rita Mae Brown?)

Kit
@aedia But not too badly.

Hasta luego @simchona!
@Kit I bes bad? looks hopeful

Kit
@aedia Uh...you want me to put you in the laundry?

3:12 AM
If I'm dirty, I needs washed.

Kit
@aedia giggle Looking up old questions, I see.
Makes me miss @Kosmonaut.
Right. I must needs to bed. kiss TTYL.

@Kit Sleep sound and pleasant dreams!

1 hour later…
4:40 AM
@Kit You should be glad you're not playing Civ...

@Cerberus Do you work nights or is your sleep schedule just broken like mine?

@FallenAngelEyes The latter.

Haha, gotcha

Early bed times are just incompatible with my constitution.
Same applies to you?

Yeeeah. I try to maintain a normal circadian rhythm but it always ends up failing.
I just hate going to bed early.

4:53 AM
If only the earth revolved around its axis in 26 hours!

30 would be better! Then I could sleep 10 and be awake 20.

I suppose it might be!
But wouldn't we get tired?
Naaah.

I dunno, 10/20 works pretty well for me.

5:13 AM
It is better than the current rotten system in any case!
Well, I am finally going to bed.
Good night, whenever it is your time!

G'night! Same time as you, haha.

I am proud of us! Bye!

user19161
@cerberus @fallen Goodnight! I just woke up...

Haha! Our sleep circles are messed up.
Well, I wish you a good day!
poof

5:39 AM
hi
I have one sentence : Provocation is the first key of resulting in death. But I think it is so simple, can one help me to improve this sentence

5:53 AM
I think no one is online

6:03 AM
I found one : The first key to the events giving rise to death provocation. ; is it correct ?

6:54 AM
@fatai No.

@simchona how can I correct it ?

@fatai I don't know--what are you trying to say? I'm having trouble gleaning any meaning

@simchona provocation results in death. If it is summariezed

@fatai What is your essay about? context would help

death and provocation

7:00 AM
What type of provocation?
You need to provoke something

people, with using religion

So one person provokes another using religion?

yeap
sorry, yes

Ok, and the sentence you gave me -- it looks like you're trying to give a list of "keys" to the events. Correct?

I am sure after few step you can write my essay. :) Yes

7:04 AM
I'm trying not to write your essay for you, but I do want to try to help you out :p
OK, I think I understand where you're coming from.
Your original sentence, just to restate it, was: The first key to the events giving rise to death provocation

just a joke. ( you easily get all key point of my essay )

you're on a good start saying "the first...", since it indicates a list is beginning

@simchona where am I come from ? I wonder, please forgive me

@fatai It's a phrase that means I can understand what you're trying to say -- is that better?

@simchona yes

7:07 AM
you might just say, "The first key to the events causing death is provocation"
The italics are places in your sentence that I changed
I took out "giving rise to" because it doesn't really fit here -- it is simpler to say "causing"
Also, between "death" and "provocation" you were missing a verb -- is
Your original sentence had no verb

giving rise to and causing have same meaning, aren't they?

They do, but in your sentence "giving rise to" has the effect of slightly jumbling the meaning.
Also, "giving rise to" doesn't seem to fit -- this is from a native speaker's ear
"Causing" and 'giving rise to' have slightly different uses

@simchona thanks, I understand

What language are you fluent in?

@simchona not english, german. why

7:11 AM
Just wondering. I knew you weren't an English speaker, but it's interesting to hear where people come from.

@simchona you?

US
so, English

fixing a sentence is so hard because it is not my native one

I understand -- it's different making your own sentences instead of reading someone else's

example : I am also thinking on "there is also one unfortunate case that ". I have used it but I am not sure it is correct. Instead of writing an essay, I prefer to write some program :)

user19161
7:16 AM
@sim I see you are now on the second page of all time rep!

Well, how does that sentence end? It sounds OK so far, but the whole thing matters
Hi @Jasper!
Look, I'm helping!
Also -- this seems to be a list question (english.stackexchange.com/questions/36598/…). Thoughts on improving/closing? @Jasp

@simchona I wonder you are programmer or english teacher.

@fatai I study computer science, but I'm not a teacher

@simchona me not science, engineer. Interesting thing, everyone says that english looks like programming but I don't think so. you?
@simchona There is also one unfortunate reality that ability of it affecting public in a good manner is now seen as threat

@fatai I think English and programming are similar, because some of the word orders are similar. Also, many languages are written in English so that probably helps.

user19161
7:21 AM
@simchona I'm fine with it. Let the rest do what they want with it.

@fatai What do you mean by your second sentence -- "ability of it affecting public in a good manner is now seen as threat"
Are you trying to say that something used to be seen as good by the public
but now it is a threat?

@simchona yes

user19161
@fatai It depends on the syntax of the programming language. I guess we are talking about different syntaxes here. Languages have different syntaxes, just like programming languages.

OK. Then I might rephrase "There is also the unfortunate reality that its previous ability to affect the public in a positive manner is now seen as a threat.
Unless you have other "unfortunate realities", you can use a definite article.

@JasperLoy different syntaxes but half of them share same architecture, background

user19161
7:25 AM
@fatai Ya just like humans are all different, but we all have eyes, ears, nose, etc.

@Jasper -- thoughts on the rewrite? I'm not sure I'm getting it right here

@JasperLoy maybe you right
@simchona thanks so much for help

user19161
@simchona It's fine. Different people have different styles. I am nobody here you know!

@all my lesson will start in 2 minutes. So, I must go. have a nice day

user19161
But I thought the question on 404 seems off-topic, so I have voted to close.

7:30 AM
@fatai Good bye!
@JasperLoy Hmm. But it does ask "does 404 mean a stupid person". Though the title is misleading

user19161
@simchona I usually write this as one word.

@JasperLoy Write your own farewell then :p

user19161
@simchona To me 404 is just a number representing something, nothing to do with the language itself.

user19161
@simchona But seriously, I checked the dictionary and it lists only the single word form.

@JasperLoy waiwai mentions there might be some meaning, though. As if 404 took on a meaning in English
@JasperLoy Hope fatai doesn't emulate me completely, then

Q: What is the past tense of this phrasal verb (double down)?

Jim G.Blackjack players can "double down" after receiving their initial two cards. What is the past tense of 'Double Down'?

My current avatar is a painting of Vincent van Gogh. Poor soul, he had a hard life. He had schizophrenia and killed himself at 40.

user19161
He only became famous after death.

@JasperLoy I liked Bieber better

user19161
@simchona Well I didn't want people to think that was me, even though Bieber was written there. :)

@JasperLoy Sexy beast.
Well, I should sleep.
Can't believe I made it to page 2 already, though--should probably, you know. Slow down. Get a life.

user19161
Interestingly I looked up ice cream and found that it was written as two words in CALD, though I always used the hyphenated form.

user19161
7:36 AM
@simchona Yes you should be spending more time on your studies and your friends, etc. :)

@JasperLoy Try skim milk. Since ice cream used to be iced cream, and skim milk was skimmed milk

user19161
@simchona Well, just do whatever makes you happy!

will do!
I just thought of a question for EL&U...but I'm not sure it's good

user19161
@simchona Go ahead and post it. It's OK to lose rep you know, if you haven't gotten used to it already.

user19161
@simchona I hope you are referring to me and not Bieber!

user19161
7:41 AM
Go to sleep, good night!

user19161
Hello @arda!

@JasperLoy Oh hi! I'm just looking at the place all of our users seem to be going.

user19161
@ArdaXi What place?

@JasperLoy This room.

user19161
@ArdaXi I see. I like this room too. Interesting topics all the time, of all kinds.

9:09 AM
Good morning!

F'x
10:01 AM
morning !

hi F'x :)

Kit
10:33 AM
@simchona This morning, I thought of the word I was trying to think of last night—glossolalia. I think it just means speaking in tongues though, so probably not a useful word.

2 hours later…

Q: What is the definition of a "pointcut"?

stackerI faced the term "pointcut" first in a context of aspect oriented programming. I wondered why it is called "pointcut" and searched several dictionaries. So I did a google search and found it is also used for a hair cutting technique also known as v-cut (this context makes more sense to me compar...

Clearly off-topic no?

12:28 PM
@z7sg not something i want to answer, in any case
@Kit glossalalia! one of my favorite words!

Kit
@JSBangs Mine too!
@z7sg I don't see what's off-topic about it?

@Kit it's a specialized term from aspect-oriented programming. the place to ask it would be programmers.se

Kit
We answer specialized questions all the time.
Especially programming ones, since a large part of our population is from SO.

@JSBangs Actually no, he's asking what non-technical meaning the word has. The trouble is he's refusing to accept that the answer is it doesn't have one.
::reads edit:: Or rather he's asking for the reasoning of the derivation. Um. That belongs in programmers.se, sure.

@Rhodri yes. with his edit it would be quite a good fit

12:35 PM
If you wanted to know the meaning/etymology of a programming term that is used in English, like inheritance for example, that would be on-topic (although gen ref).

Q: Technical English: to confirm or release an error (signal or state)?

anonymousImagine a machine that encounters and indicates an error and stops operation. You fix the error and push a button that tells the machine that the error should be fixed and it can continue. How would this button usually be labelled? "Cancel Error"? "Quit Error"?

this, however, seems to be off-topic. it's basically a variable naming request, obscured by some unnecessary detail

It's not as if there aren't plenty of SO sites where technical explanations aren't welcome. This place is for asking questions about Shakespearean dick jokes and other fun stuff like that.
3

@z7sg we should put that in the faq

or at least have a room owner pin it here :D

Q: Questions asking for technical terms/jargon

KitI just flagged this question as (potentially) off-topic, and I have flagged other questions like this in the past, but I am not sure if I am right to do so. It seems to me that the correct answer to the question would come from someone with knowledge of this specific field (in this case, softw...

Not sure that is exactly the same situation but I agree with the bit about "asking for knowledge from a specific field" as being OT.

Kit
12:46 PM
@z7sg blush I forgot I asked about it.

@Kit Hey I think you were right on there I wasn't trying to make you blush, that's just the question that came up top on meta.
:)

@JSBangs I disagree - it seems more like a
I think "retry" by unreason is a good choice

@MattEllen according to the faq, word requests of that sort are still off-topic (and/or too localized)
he could probably reword it to avoid this

@JSBangs it does seem too localised. I don't think anyone else will want that question answered

BTW, did someone say yesterday that @waiwai is in high school?
if that's true, then mind = blown

12:54 PM
yes
he revealed it when he was appointed moderator (I think you were away from EL&U at the time)

Kit
> Modern form of the sauce began to emerge when U.S. seamen added tomatoes.
giggle
Unreason said "seamen" and "sauce" in the same sentence.

@Kit ::sigh::

@Kit i thought the same thing!

At least I restrained myself from saying that.

@Kit I was having similar thoughts :D

Kit
12:59 PM
@Rhodri I like to point out the obvious.
Oh! Hey, @Rhodri!

Hey, @Kit

Kit
How's the process progressing?

@Kit Which process? I have a few too many here :-)

Kit
Your self-effacement. So to speak.
I can't believe I have 8 upvotes on this answer:

A: What is a "snake metaphor"?

KitThere is nothing special about the phrase "snake metaphor." The sentence that you quoted contains a metaphor about a Burmese python, which is a kind of snake. Earlier in the article, the author makes a different snake metaphor: It took me a few minutes to wriggle into it — picture a film of ...

i consider it a sign of progress that i find many fewer questions in desperate need of retagging these days
@Kit i upvoted you. it was a great answer

Kit
1:03 PM
@JSBangs Well, thanks. It's not really a rocket science kind of answer though.

@Kit easy answers can be fine

I'm surprised you didn't smuggle any thwackable content into that answer.

@Kit Oh, that. Slowly. I'm down to only 24 pages of activity, but I have several of undeleteable answers that I've flagged to no avail.
@Kit It's a good explanation. That it's obvious to us doesn't mean it's obvious to non-native speakers.

Kit
@Rhodri Well, I will be sad when those undeleteable remnants of you are all that is left on this site.

@Kit Err what? @Rhodri wha gwaan?

Kit
1:08 PM
What will elementary school teachers know, "integers" or "whole numbers"?

definitely whole numbers
possibly integers

@z7sg I've been slowly removing myself from the site over the last few weeks.

I know primary school teachers who had problems with fractions, so the less technical the better!

I noticed yesterday that Stan's gone. That's a huge loss, for all he didn't post on EL&U often.

@Rhodri That's most regrettable. I don't imagine I can say anything to dissuade you that hasn't already been said by the other ppl here. But, "Don't Do It!"

Kit
1:13 PM
@Rhodri He got peeved by something Martha said.

@Rhodri yeah, I'm not sure I like his reason for leaving, but I certainly think it is a bad loss

@Kit Really? Wow. I didn't think he was that flappable.

Kit
His reply is deleted now, but he was pretty angry.
(Oh, he renamed himself to "bye," in case you are wondering.)

basically (I think) it boiled down to not wanting to be asked for references for what he was saying
which I can kina understand, given how much he knows, but at the same time how do we know who is really smart and who is gaming the system?

But that seems like a massive overreaction to a request for references.

1:17 PM
he also said something to effect "this place is becoming just like wikipedia"
so I don't know. I guess his beef has been building up over a while and he just couldn't take it anymore

@Rhodri I'm just tuning in and I can't find anything about your reasons? Do you mind if I ask why you are backing out? Are you deleting just comments or answers too? Couldn't you leave answers and just ask for your account to be disassociated?

@Caleb: if you read from here: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/1501591#1501591 I think the explanation is in there.

hi @GraceNote :)

Hey

@Caleb I'm deleting the works. Long story short: I won't even passively support Jeff's behaviour.

The Stan comment that was deleted is follows
yesterday, by simchona
I've had it with you folks. No, I don't have the entire library of 16th and 17th century original manuscripts I studied handy at the moment -- that was thirty years ago (and what I was studying was letterforms and abbreviation). Relying entirely on modern references (books about books) is both lazy and, frankly, stupid (see C.S. Lewis for more on the subject).
yesterday, by simchona
But I've seen too damned many arguments to authority here in both of my brief visits -- it's like a really bad Wikipedia discussion page. Knock it off.

1:35 PM
@Rhodri I'm sorry. (Still catching up on back-story.) I'd actually seen the stuff from Jeff and weighed in with a few comments, but hadn't been back to realize it had become such a big brew-ha-ha. This site isn't all about Jeff tho.

@Caleb This site isn't all about Jeff, but you wouldn't know that from his unilateral actions.
Anyway, off to lunch for 20 minutes or so.

1:52 PM
@All: Hi

hi Sankar

whassup witdue, @Mana?

(hehehehe)

@Mana We want the juicy details, dammit!

2:42 PM
@Rhodri I got hired by Stack Exchange. That's... just about the whole of it.

Traitor! Turncoat!

@GraceNote I'd say "Congratulations!" but, you know...

@z7sg Haha, oh, if only I didn't seriously worry that some people may actually seriously see me in that light now.

Well done anyway.

@GraceNote Congratulations!

2:43 PM
Oh. Did you secretly apply or were you headhunted by the evil pitchforky ones?

@Rhodri I defend my choice, and wish that you don't think ill of me for this choice just because of who happens to run the network.
@z7sg Neither

Ok... mysterious! Well good luck with whatever chaos mission you get assigned to.

@z7sg Ah, I'm not part of CHAOS

Kit
Sweet! Now we've got one our own on the inside. And they are paying her!

@GraceNote neutral-good eh?

2:45 PM
I'm in the same kind of position as Robert/Rebecca and the others. My job is to represent the community.
The employment gives me the tools to do a better job of it, but it does not color my opinion or stance or any of my perspective of the sites.

@Grace congrats! When do you start?

Cool, but secretly you will give preference and favour to us!

Two days ago

(i find it interesting that 3/4 of the community coordinators are women)

@z7sg You can never be higher than second because Gaming will always get all the special bias

2:47 PM
@GraceNote second is good enough for us

Kim
hi
there

d'aww

Hi hi

hi
@Kim

Kim
i just attended a meeting

2:48 PM
@GraceNote Congrats!

Kim
Say a lot to native speaker, but they don't respond.

@Kim maybe they had nothing to say

Hi.

Kim
May be they don't understand what i said?

maybe

Kim
2:49 PM
I' m not a native speaker
..

@JSBangs Not to be sexist or anything, but I think the average woman might just be a tiny bit better at that stuff than the average man.

@Cerberus i think you're right, which is why i thought it was interesting

If you record what you said next time, we could analyze it.

@Cerberus I think you probably have a point, but I bet it's more of a societal/environment thing than a biological predisposition

@MattEllen yes, but the fact that its social/environmental doesn't make it any less real

2:51 PM
@MattEllen May very well be true.

Kim
@Cerberus ok

@JSBangs agreed

@GraceNote I don't think ill of you, not at all. I reserve my dubiosity for SE, and everyone's entitled to their own opinion about that.

Yes. And haven't the other people at SE always been polite, and even friendly?

Indeed. You have a right to your opinion that I fully respect.

2:53 PM
I mean, it isn't as if we thought ill of people just because they were part of Putin's cabinet, I mean....
(Joke!)

I'd work for Putin this second if he hired me. Whaddaguy.

Kit
@GraceNote Oh. That's too bad.
kicks dirt disappointedly

@Kim exactly what kind of "non-response" did they give you? did they just stare at you blankly?

Kim
no

@Cerberus — You have insulted the manhood of all my brothers and me. I demand retribution. "I do mind, the Dude minds. This will not stand, ya know, this aggression will not stand, man."

2:59 PM
@Kit You wanted Grace Note to change?

@z7sg You could attent lovely candle-lit suppers chatting all night with Berlusconi. No doubt he will have lots of interesting things to say.

Kim
@JSBangs it's a telephone meeting

@Robusto That is not very manly, dude. No offence.

@Kim so explain in what way they didn't respond
@Cerberus what?! No one is more manly than the Dude
